Full Metal Jacket WATCHALONG

I remember Matthew Modine mainly from Full Metal Jacket, Memphis Belle, Gross Anatomy (great film where he's in med school). Lee was a Marine Drill instructor and was hired by Kubrick as an advisor and he had recorded a few videos of him doing drill sgt dialogues for the hired actor and Kubrick loved what Lee was doing and hired him to be the actor. He was only nominated for a golden globe, no Academy and he did not win the Golden Globe Section he lost to Sean Connerys performance in The Untouchables.. 8 Mentally unfit to put it politely. Yes filmed in England. Matthew Modine did say it was a very difficult process, he got in a big fight with Kubrick, he asked for some time off to go be with his wife who was giving birth at the local hospital, Kubrick would not grant it to the point of Matthew threatening to cut himself in order to go to the hospital He also said between takes he and some of the guys were taunting "Pyle" and Vincent did not like it at all and he and Matthew got in a fight over it. Also, Lee did NOT rehearse w/ any of the actors so everything was more authentic. No one knew what he was going to say or do. As for the gunner on the helicopter. Vietnam was crazy. Cause a lot of local civilians would kill soldiers. They didn't want us there. So, some guys just got to the point that you couldn't trust any of them and they were all enemy. North and South.. It was a crazy war. Lime is Calcium Hydroxide. Used on dead remains it not only helps keep the smell down but also helps speed up the decay process. As for the derogatory name calling, its all about psychology and dehumazing the enemy. These are people that in war you're going to have to face and make a split second decision to kill or be killed and dehumanzing the enemy psychologically has been found to be more effective with making that split second decision. So whatever it takes to help have a little more edge than so be it. It's when you bring that with you to the world out of war that is obviously a problem and I have known a lot of good men that really had a hard time shaking that hatred due to seeing what the opposition had done in person. Me, I've always been good about "checking it at the gate" (Leaving it behind, where it belongs). But it is still used to this day. As for the difference between the drill Sgt and Colonel. Drill Sgt's have to be the hardest, the real "fleet" isn't nearly as intense as basic for reason. The set for the actual battle was an old gas works that had been used in different films and music videos. They took a wrecking ball to a bunch of the buildings to make it look like a battled city. As for the magazine on the helmet, its to make sure the rounds are seated properly and tight so they'll chamber correctly and smoothly.
