I took it that Holden somehow felt a sense of shame or disgust with himself because in his mind he is associating deviancy with sexual attraction to his gf wearing those shoes.(Because they were the same kind that he bought for the prisoner. She saw him looking at them at the store and assumed he liked them for her.) I think he is starting to find difficulty in differentating between “normal” sexual interests/roleplaying etc.. and not wanting to feel like he is anything like the prisoners he is interviewing.
