One interesting specialized version of the Steyr MPi-81 is this model, built for the Steyr/Saurer 4K 7FA armored personnel carrier. The vehicle could carry 8 infantrymen and their compartment had four firing ports fitted with MPi-81 SMGs. The changes required from the standard MPi-81 pattern were:

 - A longer barrel to fit into the gun port

- An optical sight very much like that of the Steyr AUG

- Removal the front sling swivel

- Addition of a mounting bracket for a brass catching bag

These are very rare guns to find these days, and I’d like to thank Joschi Schuy for giving me access to his to film! Additional thanks to the Heeresgeschichtliches (Military History) Museum in Vienna for the photo of the IFV.

The longer barrel with the gun port attachment makes sense. With the original barrel and no attachment there's too much opportunity to spray down the inside of the vehicle.

would take the vehicle and the 81. unmounted the high scope could be more harm than an upgrade with a chinweld on the wire but... looks 80s cool for sure. they could have made that a civilian semi model with longer barrel.

Interesting. But how large was the gun port in order to accommodate the barrel and that high mounted scope? It seems that it would have to be at least six inches high. If so, wouldn't that leave a large opening for incoming fire? I would like to see, at least pictures of the inside and outside of the gun port. Maybe you can did those up.

That looks like a gun I'd actually like to take if I had to abandon a vehicle. I'm sure their are other good ones but that one seems really high up there especially considering the age.
