I recommend the complete 14-volume set in electronic format:

https://www.lulu.com/en/us/shop/rob-stott/the-ak47-catalog-volume-1-14/ebook/product-2g8epy.html?page=1&pageSize=4

Rob Stott is an AK subject matter expert who has been producing The AK47 Catalog since 2013. He travels to various museums, factories, and private collections finding and photographing different AK variants and then prints those as a photo catalog. Each volume is approximately 80 pages, and the most recent release was Volume 14. There is (intentionally) almost no text; just photographs and a few minimal supporting notes.  As photographic reference material, the Catalog is a nice valuable piece of material. For differentiating between specific sub-variants, is it quite useful, and it is a great resource for clone rifle builders.

What I do not like is the lack of unified organization and the price. Each volume is $28 printed softcover, because they are made as print-on-demand items through Lulu (possibly the most expensive and least efficient way to print one book, much less 14 of them). Total cost to purchase a complete set is something like $400 (disclosure: Stott sent me a print set to use for this video). However, they are also available electronically, and a complete digital package is $55.60. That is a much more reasonable price, and (in my opinion) well worth it.

Brilliant - thanks Ian. As usual, greatly informative vid. Just bought the PDF version which will help me immensely in researching Yugo/Zastava guns as I'm currently converting two modern PAPs to older versions, one in .308, the other in more traditional 7.62x39. On another note I was hoping to get to Summer Brutality but managed to aggravate an old war wound shooting ELR in Sicily last week which has rendered me hors de combat so good luck to you, Bloke and all the crew at Polenar next weekend coming! Best from sunny Gozo.

Thanks, AK47 ? Some new rifle? lol. Been using them since the 80s. Think I will look at the PDF file.

Ian raises his nose. “Not Headstamp quality”. Ian lowers his nose.

I'm not a fan of e-books. I only buy the real thing.

Guido Schriewer

like the idea. not the chaotic or pricepoint.

Considering the way you feel about these books, will you be taking them to the range and use an AK on them? Or, you could mail them to the AK Guy, Brandon Herrera?

ForgottenWeapons

I plan to keep them as part of my reference library. Definitely wouldn't just thoughtlessly destroy them, and Mr. Herrera is quite capable of getting a set himself if he needs them.

Thanks for the tip on the electronic format - How large is the file downloaded from LuLu in .pdf? Thinking of dedicating a jump drive to it in case my PC crashes.
