In about 2 weeks I'll be shooting Desert Brutality with (among other people) Jari Laine, who is CEO of Varusteleka. So, what questions do you have that would be interesting from the perspective of a Finnish reservist, sport shooter, and person dedicated to developing military and outdoor gear?

From both perspectives, do Americans or Fins have stereotypically better gun handling skills?

Mosquitos are bad in Finland. What do you use to repel Mosquitos? Something that does not damage the plastic or wood of a gun?

When will you make the Särmä Short Shorts? I'm talking 3 inch inseam here.

I'm interested in his Top 2 things he likes more about the Finnish firearms community, and the top 2 things he likes more about the American firearms community; and how he thinks American's might "import" the good things from the Finnish community.

What piece of issued gear (of any armed force or timeframe) that you think is cool, but was utterly useless?

About what percentage of your sales are domestic vs international? What are the top 3 countries in sales?

How do you prioritize bringing products to market that your customers really NEED vs products that have a better profit margin to help the company. T.Rex Arms is always trying to balance these priorities.

Its 1932 and the Prime Minister of Canada has approved the plan to preemptively attack the U.S before Canada becomes Americas first Maple Syrup Republic. You are charged with equipping the Army and have access to all the small arms available to the Commonwealth and non U.S allies at the time. What would your indvidual choices be for a Pistol, Rifle, SMG, Light & Heavy Machine gun for the Canadian Forces? ( weirdly this is based off something that almost happened)

What's a peice of military gear/equipment which doesn't exist, but you think should exist?

Is there still a place on the modern battlefield for traditional (generally pistol caliber) sub-machine guns? Would Finnish reservists baulk at being issued such?

Anonymous

For my two cents, Canada would just go with what it pretty much already had, the Lee-Enfield SMLE for a rifle. As far as the rest goes, the Canadians would not be at all imaginative and just go with whatever the British Army was using at the time.

When will you guys start shipping Porky jerky to the US again? I'm dying for some! My actual serious question is: What gun do the Finn collectors lust for most? More specifically, what gun is seemingly widely available in other countries that Finns wish they had more of.

Anonymous

Many historic Finnish firearms have ended up in the US; is there a sentiment amoung Finnish collectors wishing that they would have stayed in country. The US collectors market is often the dumping group for surplus and obsolete arms, and I’m curious how people from the origin countries feel about their arms coming to the US.

I remember a while ago you ran a match using your Chauchat and remarked that the long spindly bipod legs didn’t make sense until you used them against a representation of a trench wall. What other design features or pieces of gear have you found didn’t make sense until they were used in their proper context?

Do any Russians take part in your competition?

2nd time asking: Which gun company, failed or successful, would you most want a book about their history? Personally, I'd want a book on MSAR, just to find out how they managed to get a license to clone AUGs from a company as stodgy as Steyr.

How did Varusteleka get started? Was it a passion or necessity, as in you could not find the gear you wanted/needed?

How do you source the gear you sell?

Are there any American firearms (either milsurp or new production) that you REALLY want to own, but can't get in Finland?

I mean I did logistics fo a good while and never had such a warehouse. the walkthrough looked very fine workstations and all. sidegig and some funds from other business? must have cost A LOT.---this IS a language barrier otherwise I'd say... if you looking for staff... Can one tell the hierarchy at Varusteleka by beard size? And is a beard required for employment? Seriously, as a smaller nation that had many of it military surplus guns exported to the US, how do they feel about it? Are there "enough" still in Finland? Do they wish they had not been sold out of country?

Anonymous

Where they founded pink panties to sell in Varusteleka? What kind of military had this in stock?

Question for Jari and Ian - what do you enjoy the most about your experiences in each other's countries? And if I may, Ian, I once commented on a full30 video that "You have the best job since Clarkson got fired." Your reply was along the lines of "Thanks. His salary would be nice." So my reply now - That's why we're here.

From what I know, Finland has a strong pride in its marksmanship. As a member of your countries reserve forces, do you feel conflicted if you get a bad score/ result, or is it more, meh, everyone has an off day? I was a reserve forces instructor in England and got mocked a lot if I shot a bad score.

Doug G

With a world wide surplus store, do you buy blind lots, do you have "contacts"(Vlad the Ukrainian, Pierre the French/North Africian, Moshe the Israeli, etc) getting you more of what you want, not just "junk" or you have employees/agents of the store, going through various auctions/lots getting your some of your stock?

Anonymous

Jari, why are you so awesome?

Anonymous

How are modern-day relations between Finns and Russians, considering the history of conflict and animus over the last 100 years?

Andreas Nohl

With all ecological and so: Is there a single piece of clothing you sell that has no plastics in it. No buttons, seams, elastic, zipper…

Bruce Brodnax

I'm going to go out on a limb here & say "Absolutely!" esp. if they're chambered in a higher-powered pistol cartridge like 10mm or 7.63 Tok and fire hardened steel bobos* in a 3d-printed sabot... [uh, not that I'm suggesting any preparedness strategies or anything for the pending zombie apocalypse or anything, no no, not at all!] 😉 [*] - technical jargon for "projectiles." Adopt & sprinkle into your conversation w/ other gun nuts so you can be one of the cool kids too! 😄

Bruce Brodnax

"Get a license?" Why would they need to? The AUG came out in the '70s man: all MSAR needed to do was to reverse engineer it & injection mold some of their own!

Bruce Brodnax

Muslin for the cuffs, Cordura on the elbows. "Patches?!? WE NEED SOME STEENKIN' PATCHES!"

Bruce Brodnax

Have you *seen* the Finnish woodlands? There is no need for a flat-shooting cartridge that can't penetrate the underbrush there... There's a reason the Finns did so much of their most effective work w/ the Suomi smg during the Winter War!

Bruce Brodnax

Well, this one time at band camp [aka "SHOT show"] they ran into these crazy murricans named Karl & Ian... [and the rest, as they say, was history!]

Bruce Brodnax

They'd kind of have to, wouldn't they? Isn't the population of the entire country about the same as St. Petersburg's?

Bruce Brodnax

Does the natural range of the Norwegian Blue parrot overlap Finland at all, or do the reindeer form a natural protective barrier against overpopulation by eating the invaders?

Sean S.

Out of the various firearms that were modified or upgraded by the Finnish during WW2 which do you think were the biggest improvements over the original models? exp: Russian standard 91/90 Mosin vs M39. Keep up the great work

PHAZE

Do the "tacticool" spec-ops emulators in Finland cosplay as Finnish special forces in their gear and looks, or do they draw from major power (US, Russian) special forces as depicted in imported media?

Anonymous

What piece of equipment did not exist 10 years ago that does now. And what piece of equipment would you like to see in 10 years sold by your company

Anonymous

If not for budgeting and logistics reasons, does it make sense for Finland to stick to 7.62x39?

Jacob speaks

How has the surplus market been under the covid lockdown?

Anonymous

This is less of a question for the CEO and more for Ian. To what extent did the Mexican army actually equip itself with the Mondragon self loading rifle? And was there any significant instance where the rifle was used in anger?

Drew Sizemore

One of my biggest takeaways from all of Forgotten Weapons' historical content (and the entirety of the WWSD project) is that the availability of materials can be an important factor in the performance of a firearm. Can you speak a bit about how the new polymers, fabrics, and other materials affect the performance of your products versus what was available to soldiers at various periods?

Anonymous

(1) Can you describe Finland's modern gun culture both in terms of tradition and politics as well as how history shaped current views on firearm ownership, its role in society and how that has changed over time. I'd also be interested in how it compares to other European countries like Switzerland, France and Germany. (2) Can you give us a brief overview of how easily civilians can obtain firearms in Finland and what the requirements are? (3) How do you think Finland's military service affects the public's views of firearms and gun ownership. Do you think it has a positive affect in normalizing and demystifying it in contrast to other European countries where few people have ever held or even shot a gun and are thus scared of them?

Anonymous

To Ian and Jari. What is your favourite ww2 era bolt action. Also do you have many if any running them in Finnish brutality?

Anonymous

Regarding the FNC video- Gun South bought out a lot of Steyrs remaining stock in the mid-1980s and did not convert guns to full-auto. Double stamp (Steyr/GSI) FNs are fairly common and most are semis.

Toby Williamson

Ian has said in the past that the PKM is one of the best GPMGs that in service Is there any other military gear that you think is arguably the best to have, such as webbing, uniforms or backpacks? What gear has the best middle ground of comfortable, usability, durability, able to be repaired and maintained and other factors that you would want to have it over all others? And are there any items that you think would be best to look outside of military issue/surplus gear to get the best result?

Anonymous

Another question, but will you ever do a history of Beretta video. The company is the oldest firearms company in existence and I find that very fascinating. It would be interesting to see a compilation of weapons theyve produced from the 1500s to today

Anonymous

What is the common perception of American gun laws and more specifically gun culture as viewed by a foreigner that’s also into guns?

EyeBall

If I moved from the USA to Finland, how will the government treat me as a firearms owner? Will they let me bring my guns? Will they let me buy guns once I reside in Finland?

Drew Sizemore

While watching some of the Finnish Brutality footage, I saw someone stop their run due to snow in their muzzle. I'm not very experienced with fighting in snowy conditions. What is the danger of snow in my flash hider? Why can't I just shoot it out? What should I do to deal with it in realistic conditions?
