Ian's Customs: Remington Auto-8

http://www.patreon.com/ForgottenWeapons https://www.floatplane.com/channel/ForgottenWeapons/home Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! http://shop.forgottenweapons.com I have a number of interesting custom guns, and I figured it would be fun to do videos on a couple of them...let me know if you enjoys this and would like to see more like this! Today's example is what I call my Remington Auto-8. It's a recreation of the FN Police Model Auto-5. Those guns were standard Auto-5 actions made with longer 8-round magazine tubes and full-length hand guards. The most well-known purchase of them was by the Rhodesian military (probably through Portugal), but they were bought in small numbers by a variety of police and security organizations. A shotgun of this pattern was also a personal favorite of Charlie Askins. Mine was done by the shotgun wizards at Vang Comp, with their barrel (12ga), a sling, shortened stock, and modernized Auto-5 lifter that allows one-handed loading. It still has the original safety in the trigger guard, but is otherwise a pretty capable tactical shotgun...and a heck of a head-turner at the range! Contact: Forgotten Weapons 6281 N. Pretty slick, Enjoyed the story/info. Been a 12ga fan for a long time. Very handy ,flexible platform. You of course know you are not the first guy to put $500 in upgrades into a $200 gun. Been there too. Later from Texas.

Very cool, excited to see more

Charlie wrote that he tied a bandanna around the muzzle as a crude night sight, and that he loaded his with "blue whistlers." A famous user of the Remington 11 was Frank Hamer. So was Bonnie Parker, with a 20 gauge shortened at both ends. A 12 gauge with shortened barrel was recovered from Bonnie and Clyde's Ford post mortem.

Always wanted an Auto 5. Now I have a reason to shop for one, or a Remington. More customs please and I hope you find that shotgun match this year.

Pat Patterson

I like the custom gun idea, because yours really are custom; not just attaching cheap plastic items.

Very cool. No wonder that it has that extra thick recoil pad as it kicks like a mule. I would definitely like to see more custom conversions and see you shoot it in a match. Thanks for showing a few rounds on target (more please) and the slow motion recoiling barrel which I'm sure that a few people never saw how that looks. As always, great presentation.

Shouldn't this be called the Auto 9? Since it's an 8 shot tube +1 in the chamber? Auto 5s are 4 shot tubes, not 5.

Ran some rounds through one yesterday, and they do kick a bit. While switching the rings to the heavy load configuration, noticed a crack in the fore end along the cap retainer hole. Deadlined until repair, and the A5 two piece carrier and related parts have been ordered. Replacement recoil pad is on the short list. If the gun doesn't beat you up, it'll beat itself.

I inherited a late-40's production Model 11 in 20ga from my grandpa. As recently as a couple weeks ago it's still running like a clock (and my dad and I both shot better with it at trap than a fancy O/U trap-specific 12ga, go figure).

wow that barrel recoils way further back than I thought, neat old gun thanks for sharing

I always enjoy very much the historical context of the guns in your videos. Thanks!

sounds like someone FINALLY got the joy of shotgunnin'. ok that is a cool piece. does it switch from bird, buck to slugs ok?

Paul Ingraham

Very cool gun Ian. I've always wanted an Auto 5 but now also a Remington equivalent. Thanks for sharing.

The US Army Air Corp trained gunners by first having them shoot at moving targets, then they would put them on a trailer and drag them along as they shot at moving targets to give them experience shooting at something moving while moving. A WWII base near my hometown had areas that were nearly pure black from all the shot that had been fired.

I too, have an A-5 inherited from my Grandfather, early fifties, if I remember right, have to say, I've never seen such a clean, clear picture of the full barrel recoil. It is very clear, impressive. I've never heard of this version before, a very nice custom gun you have there.

By the way, I've seen many variants of the A-5 whose owners didn't know they had a compensator ring for heavy and light loads, and were shooting everything on the light setting, cracking the fore end. I've also made a couple, because someone lost it in the field, replaced it with a piece of slit pipe or the like. Having the correct ring with matching taper fitting the barrel lug, is a necessity to keep the magazine tube alive, with heavy loads.

Off topic, but I sure would be interested to hear something from you on the 6.8 round/rifle/SAW combination the Army is testing and seems hellbent on adopting. From my thoroughly uninformed point of view, the idea appears to be completely insane, and some input from you would be most welcome.

That much barrel recoil relative to the rest of the gun makes it look like an artillery piece.

Awesome video. When I was a young teenager, an Auto 5 was absolute top of my wishlist (in the 70's). I've yet to scratch that itch, but if I ever come across one, I'm probably in for it.

Cool, I would like to see more guns like this
