Modernizing the G3

http://www.patreon.com/ForgottenWeapons https://www.floatplane.com/channel/ForgottenWeapons/home Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! http://shop.bbtv.com/collections/forgotten-weapons Of all the classic 7.62mm battle rifles of the Colt War, only the G3 remains in modern military service updated to serve alongside the more recent 5.56mm rifles (no, the M14 DMR rifles don't count). Why the G3, and how? Today we will take a look at a clone of a Norwegian AG3F2 and a sort-of clone of a Swedish AK4D with its Spuhr stock and handguard. Contact: Forgotten Weapons 6281 N. Love the video Ian. I have talked to several current portuguese service members who have deployed to central Africa republic on under nato mission. They were given the new fn scar 16 in country, trained up and performed initial missions with them. They said they came back to base and first thing dumbed the scars for their g3s. They found that they still use to the g3 from training, prefer the punch of 7.62nato and due to mechanization don't have to carry to much on their person and can keep extra ammo on vehicles. They said when they engaging enemy its at often at 70meters through brush and mud huts. 556 wasn't punching through and they flat out said they hitting men several times and they continue to fire back. When they pull out 7.62nato they notice it often just takes 1 hit to stop the enemy. I have noticed the Portuguese army is issuing more and more scar 17. The 17 was supposed to be a supplement and dmr with standard issue 16, but with units constantly requesting g3s back they starting to focus on getting more of the 17s out.

Another area seeing modernization of g3s is with portuguese police/gendamerie. The GNR half a bunch of hand me down g3s and more than not pull them out for certain use. They see the value in modernization of weapons and are looking at options to at least mounting optics. I have a friend in the GNR Porto who couple months ago was called to help with a bull that got loose. He ended up using a g3, said they had questionable ammo but luckily he had some from his unit and then dropped bull with single round.

On a personal note. Their are even more ways to modernize a g3. As a weirdo who has a g3 as a go to uh oh rifle. I have added reduced angle locking piece for use of suppressors they greatly improve the handling of the gun in addition to the spuhr up grades. Another area that is improving is better triggers. I ended up using a browe combat optic which has made the gun stupid easy to use out to 600meters. Can run the rifle I field conditions at 200-600m with stupid accuracy and target identification. I am looking into getting ptr 16inch g3 to help bring down the added length of a suppressor. But its really funny running a modernized g3 with top of the line ARs. Everyone sees my g3 and think its no way a fighting gun, but then they run it and find that it can actually do a lot. Will never compare to a handy light AR but the modernized g3 has a unique role it can step into past the common overly heavy DMR role.

I totally agree with all your points, the Bundeswehr did use the G3 in a couple of different configurations in Afganistan mainly in the DMA-Roll. Wich started as an ad-hoc thing. By some Paartroppers who saw the need brought a bunch of their old "Sniper"( actually DMR) G3 with the simple Fero ZF over when they Deployed. Wich finally led up to the official G3 DMR with proper Optic (S&B 3–12 × 50PMII) Optic and Harris bipod. I am pretty sure both the G3 and MG3 will be around for a long time to come!!!

I am on my 15th year in the Swedish homeguard. I carried the ak4B until last summer, when I switched it for a C. I also shoot the Ak4 competitively, and I am an instructor on it. I have shot it quite a bit. We do also have a shortened (by 25mm) original stock, which most people prefer. It makes it a lot easier to handle, especially if you have a 40mm grenade launcher. Recoil is an issue though, due to the "hump" hitting your face. We have the collapsible stock issued to some drivers, but it's pretty bad to shoot. You can't really wrap any tape around it so the metal is against your face when shooting, which is a huge issue in the winter. The new Spuhr stock is a fantastic upgrade. Both because the ergonomics are better but also because it's adjustable. Many women and shorter men have issues with the original stock being too long, especially when wearing body armour.

Is that your Brethren Arms G3 from previous content?

Does anyone have any other stock recommendations, this Spuhr stock is nearly $400, ouch!

Get spare stock [they're remarkably cheap; lots of the green German issue stocks floating around. I think I got one for $14+shipping a few years back? It's in my blue sky projects pile for now...] Remove stock & keep the end cap. Weld properly-sized [1.25" x 14?] nut to take AR stocks to back. Mount AR stock, put a big ass cheek pad on the tube. What optics are you going to use? You'll never get your eye down to use the irons now... Cetme 308s come w/ a nice piece o' pic-rail mounted to the top of the receiver, but I guess if you're a purist wanting to use the antiquated G3 claw mount that could work now too...

After seeing the G3 get smoked in the IRtv battle rifle shoot out a couple of years ago due to the time lost during the extra handling involved w/ changing mags, the one thing the G3/CETME needs to modernize it is a last round bolt hold-open [LRBHO.] I'm a LES customer, so the long LOP is a feature, not a bug for me...

Very interesting remarks since back in 2015 you rated the G3 as you least favorite rifle.
