I have a chance to do some filming with an expert on suppressors, both modern and historical. What questions should I ask him? Note: I am note sure if this Q&A will air this month or later, so you may not see these on film for a while.

I would like to hear about the law regarding suppressors, if possible. how it came about, why it is the way it is, etc.

Anonymous

What will be the next breakthrough/advancement in silencer technology?

Anonymous

How much would a suppressor cost if the NFA went away? What's the actual value of one, including R&D etc.?

Sean Smith

Why do you think suppressors became so highly regulated in the United States, but not everywhere else in the world?

Anonymous

If you buy an antique rifle with an antique silencer, what does the NFA classify it as?

Anonymous

Do you think asymmetrical suppressors or similar things become the norm, or are baffles here to stay?

Dan

How available/popular were silencers before 1934 when they became restricted by the NFA?

Anonymous

+1 I really don’t understand what makes a suppressor worth $1000

Pete

Measuring sound can be complicated, with a lot of variables. Is there a standardised way of testing a suppressor that people should be aware of, so that comparisons can be made effectively? Thinking of casual reviewers, more than trained experts conducting formal tests.

JSluka

I'm looking for a new oil filter for my motorcycle, what would you recommend? It seems to me that suppressors are actually quite simple from a manufacturing standpoint, and that the only thing driving their cost is the NFA; do you believe this to be the case? (This is in reference to the deluge of "motorcycle oil filters" popping up on sites like Wish and AliExpress)

Anonymous

Are there any advantages to having a built-in suppressor on a hand gun over the screw in type. I suspect a separate one is easier to change the baffles when required.

Manuel Schurig

What was the single greateat jump forward in suppressor technology, and what do you think will be the next big jump/evolution of technology?

Josh Neil

Does the pillow trick that James Bond uses work?

What is the lifespan throughout the years of these suppressors? Assuming they’re all military made and the same quality.

Anonymous

I often hear anecdotal accounts of silencers being included in the NFA in 1934 at the behest of conservation groups, but I have not seen any primary sources that support this. Can he shed any light onto why silencers were included into the NFA?

Anonymous

-What factors do they consider when choosing materials? -how do they strike a balance between strength and weight? -User serviceable Vs. non -Monocore Vs. baffle stack

How much has Suppressor technology, design and manufacturing progressed since Maxim's original? Has the emergence of additive manufacturing opened up possibilities for a step change in cost and performance?

Anonymous

How do you feel about the USMC's supposed adoption of suppressors in the infantry and other combat roles? As a former grunt and suppressor aficionado I feel like there is going to be reliability issues. (I have never seen a Marine proof suppressor)

How much is sound reduction affected by using a 30 caliber suppressor on smaller diameter host weapons? Is it worth having both a 30 cal and a 22 cal can?

Anonymous

To your mind, what is the strangest suppressor, manufactured or improvised, that you have come across?

Cleansweep

Is the prevalent conical design for baffles the most ideal shape for slowing the expanding gases, or is there another reason why most suppressors have been using this design for decades?

Do you forsee future designs where the gas and heat contained within the supressor is harnessed to power or recharge electronic components on the gun?

Anonymous

@sean Smith: Just a comment for you: I live in Denmark and in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, suppressors ARE regulated, but the permit is free (or very inexpensive) and usually follow the permit for the weapon. I have, for instance, 1 hunting rifle in 6.5 swedish, a .22 and a S&W M&P 10 in .308 with suppressors for all. Permits were all free once I had the licence for each rifle. Once the licence is in place, you can buy the suppressor over the counter, No waiting, whilst showing the licence for the rifle. In general: Nordic countries advocate use of suppressors, due to noise, but it is actually only within the last 15-20 years they have become legal. Sweden was first btw:) Suppressors for handguns are, however, illegal so far. Handguns are only for sport shooting on ranges. No public land here to go and shoot and also illegal on private property.

Matthew Jackson

If it weren't for the NFA making it hard to maintain/replace wipes, would most suppressors likely use wipes to get more noise reduction?

Anonymous

An old book mentioned running suppressors "wet", which apparently involved filling them with water for some unspecified benefit. Was this ever an actual practice, or just something invented by the writer?

Anonymous

How do Maxim's original "silencers" compare to modern offerings? Has the use of suppressors changed in the military/civilian world from then to now?

Anonymous

I don't plan on owning machine guns or the likes, but I would like a suppressor or three. What are your thoughts on Gun Trusts for purchasing a few caliber specific suppressors? What about services provided by silencercentral.com and others?

Is there any movement to remove suppressors as NFA items?

Anonymous

Have either of you had the chance to shoot or know of anyone that has shot an original maxim suppressor and if so how well did it perform.

Suppressor development is built around a Global market with significant market limitations, and a US market with significant NFA restrictions. If the NFA were repealed, and those wait time and tax money constraints lifted off of customers, what might developers do differently?

What were the real reasons that Suppressors got put onto the NFA, was it really the movies of the time?

Anonymous

What major advancement(s), if any, have there been in suppressor design over the past 10 - 15 years?. Has there been a designer and/or a company that has improved suppressor design over any other?

Anonymous

Should I suppress an AR in 5.56 and use Subsonic ammo? Or get a .300 BLK?

Anonymous

What is the actual purpose of a suppressor? Is it just for the disruption of a known sound signature and a slight decibel reduction? I've heard suppressed weapons a few times and they barely render the weapon hearing safe. That being said, I've been told that suppressors are "front facing" and have a completely different signature while on the receiving end.. so I may be mistaken.

Leon Peters-Malone

I'd like to know more about the WW2 integrally suppressed weapons, M3 Grease Gun and Sten. How easy was it to machine them? Is there a difference between the integrally suppressed and a screw on suppressor? I'd also like to get my head around the MP5-SD, AS Val, the like. While the suppressor is quite important to reducing their volume, just how much of it is the suppressor? Is it the suppressor and being subsonic, or is it a more holistic, sum total of that and the chamber ports, that leads to such quiet weapons. If you've got the time, I'd be interested to see in terms of numbers, just how quiet is quiet. What the sound of the action is. Related-ish, but perhaps not entirely on topic.

Anonymous

Have there been any good studies of how much harder it is for bystanders to detect suppressed gunfire in urban or suburban settings, and/or whether it would actually have an effect on gunfire being reported to the authorities? While many of us would like to see suppressors become less regulated--I confess I was a bit unsettled the first time I heard how quiet even an AR firing standard ammo could be. Do we have data on whether the average person could hear a suppressed weapon firing in the house next door? The apartment above them?

Anonymous

What is the next advancement in suppressor technology, and do they take any queues from other fields like automotive and such? Also Ian you and Carl subscribe that suppressors aren’t really all that necessary yet they are being employed more and more throughout the us military, have you changed your stance at all

Ed Mac

i was going to ask about this. I have tried shooting a .22 pistol through a suppressor both dry and wet and the wet one was noticeably quieter. Also minimised first round pop. https://youtu.be/Prxu9uQdecs

Anonymous

Is there a caliber/cartridge specially optimized/developped for the use with silencers? Such as the ballistic coefficient, the stopping power and the level of noise are all optimized.

Anonymous

I’ve missed a few shots on deer because I was fiddling to get my ears in (gotta protect what’s left). I understand that suppressors are commonly used on hunting rifles in Nordic countries, which I think is a great idea. How much harder is it to suppress a full sized or even magnum round than a pistol or intermediate rifle cartridge that we typically see suppressed in the United States? Also, is there any interesting technology coming out of that hunting rifle market?

Deviant Ollam

Ian and others have often helpfully classified categories of firearm — like machine guns or subguns — into different "generations" based on evolutions in technology. Have suppressors undergone similar generational "leaps"? What are they?

Mark Townsend

What is more critical for moderator effectiveness? Volume or the extent to which the flow of gas is disrupted? Is a large-volume moderator with few baffles better or worse than a small-volume version with lots of baffles, ducts, wire wool elements etc? Thank you!

Anonymous

Given the direction the Russians took fairly early in the Cold War towards captive piston type suppressed weapons, and the inherent drawbacks to effectively suppressing a firearm (meaning both escaping high pressure gases and the loud crack produced by any supersonic projectile), is it likely that if we didn’t have the legal issues surrounding integrally suppressed ammunition that their development and use in modern times would be significantly more prolific?

Ryan D Thorne

What were the concerns about suppressors that the lawmakers who wrote and passed the NFA had?

Anonymous

Here (Norway) a suppressor is pretty normal because you don't need anything to get one you can just buy them over the counter. A gun to mount the suppressor to is another story. Do you ever see this as becoming the rules in the US (the suppressor part not the gun part) to since suppressors can actually be looked at as a safety equipment + it helps with not annoying others as much.

What correlation exist between suppressor diameter vs. suppressor length? For instance, how much can you shorten the suppressor by increasing its diameter by 'X' amount? Secondly, most suppressor are cylindrical but are there any special shapes that could improve the effectiveness of the suppressor like conical or spherical (disregarding sight picture obviously) etc?

The Nagant M1895 has much lore surrounding it due to the advantage of its gas seal mechanism when using a suppressor. Are there documented examples of suppressed Nagant revolvers beyond the apocryphal mentions of KGB and Viet Cong use, and does the gas seal cartridge provide a noticeable advantage over a revolver with a traditional cylinder gap?

Kyle Pocock

Seeing the USMC experimenting with using suppressors on all their weapons, do you see this becoming a reality in the future, why or why not? What sort of suppressors would fit this requirement best?

Anonymous

Do suppressors affect things like muzzle velocity or accuracy? If so, can thus be mitigated?

When was the first known military use of a suppressor? I know of the Welrod from WWII, but were they used in military/covert circles before then?

Anonymous

Suppressors for almost 100 years appear to have largely (if not entirely exclusively) been of a baffle design, either with or without rubber wipes. Only recently to my knowledge has anyone created a new technology for sound minimization. Is there any reason that everyone stuck with baffles for 100 years aside from the "tried and true" explaination?

Alfred Gawron

Many silencers have a "first shot pop", what is the cause (except oxygen in the expansion chamber) and how to eliminate it?

Anonymous

Given that K baffles are generally used for lower pressure pistol rounds, and 60 degree cones for higher pressures, why is it that K, outside they tend to deform from the pressures, are not good for higher pressure rounds despite the fact they cause more turbulence for the gasses then cones.

Anonymous

Can such all-in-one equipment like the 'Smuzzle' (as recently tested by the U.S. Army) truely be technically effective or is it just another trade-off on all sides? Are there any historic attempts for an all-in-one solution?

Anonymous

What are your views on the Russian/Soviet suppressed ammunition? I have handled an S4M and MSP in the dungeon levels at Leeds, but never fired one! I would really like to have a go with a Vol, but unless I really upset the FSB this seems unlikely...!

Anonymous

Largest suppressor ever made?

Anonymous

If suppressors are simply a way to trap gas coming out of the muzzle, why aren't more suppressors made of aluminum?

Draygone

It is my understanding that suppressors have a minimal effect on muzzle velocity and accuracy. This being the case why are integrated muzzle suppressors not more common? Especially on lighter guns where the additional weight is not too much of an issue.

Brian Ingram

Related question: Military use of a suppressor (other than hearing preservation during an indoor raid) would seem to favor medium- or long-range engagements where noise from a cycling action is irrelevant. But what is the impact on the effective range of the weapon when suppressed? Or when using subsonic ammo to eliminate the sonic boom? Does the rifle's range shrink lower than the 3-400 meters an average engagement might span?

Anonymous

thoughts on current research in asymmetrical swirl charge suppressor design, as well as mechanical (tubing) noise canceling vent design.

Adam Schindler

In general, suppressors reduce recoil some and greatly reduce noise; muzzle brakes greatly reduce recoil and greatly increase noise. Can a suppressor design be tailored to reduce recoil versus sound signature and vice versa?

Anonymous

Hi, you said in one of your videos that Maxims son invented the suppressor for guns and cars as well. A gun is mostly very small in comparison to a car. Is the concept scalable in every size?

Anonymous

silencer..suppressor what is the difference?

Anonymous

To piggyback Timo’s question: aside from the ridiculous look/weight/interference with sights/etc. is converting a car muffle into a silencer feasible?

Frizzen

Many are, especially rimfire suppressors and some pistol caliber suppressors. Without going too deep down the rabbit holes of metallurgy and internal/external ballistics: The thickness of Aluminum stock required to safely and repetitively contain the muzzle pressures generated by larger calibers (5.56, 7.62, etc) would make them overly bulky and result in an assuredly heavier suppressor with inferior properties as opposed to manufacturing out of titanium, inconel, steel, etc. Additionally, the treatments/finishes usable on aluminum are generally not as durable as those you typically use on the aforementioned alloys.

Anonymous

What recommendation do they have for a suppressed weapon with which to sabotage the Elbonian Army Special Forces “Chrome Berets”?

PHAZE

Is the development of wipe-based suppressors really less fruitful than baffle based designs, or is it just held back by the ATF rulings on suppressor parts and NFA regulations?

Jeff Price

Is there a solid reference book on sound suppression? What pressure differential corresponds to some amount of sound pressure/noise level? OR is there a simple relationship between db and pressure that gives a "good enough" approximation for estimating noise level and reduction? I have been thinking about silencer design and am looking for information. So this will be very helpful. Thanks very much in advance.

Anonymous

Who, in your opinion, makes the best mount for a suppressor? Is it threads, or one of the various QD mounts?

Andrew Cook

I have heard the muzzle break on the AN-94 being described as a sound reducing how does that work? Bonus points for XM-177 moderator comparison.

Anonymous

Any information regarding the Russian "Bramit" Device that was used to suppress mosins and nagants?

Delta87

Do you believe any other companies will develope their own flow through suppressors like OSS?

d from birmingham

The Bramit device was only used on nagant revolvers. It was actually a modifcation of the revolver that used an attachment holding .22 sabots that were fired into with a very custom small round from the revolver cylinder which had been modified to hold it.. the .22 sabot would fly out with reportedly no noise due to the small amount of gas pressure that was from the very small caliber bullet from the modified cylinder. sort of like those silent rounds that fired for all intents a blank that moved up a piston that pushed out a bullet at just a few hundred feet per second while sealing all the gases inside the casing.

Anonymous

What kind of innovative designs can be now made with new manufacturing technics such as 3D printing? For example, something inspired by the tesla valve?

Matthew F

In general, I'd be interested in strange noise reducing devices, like the AN-94 "dog whistle" and others

Anonymous

What was the first or one of the first suppressors to see combat on a automatic rifle?

Andrey Gardner

Has, in if so how, legislation hampered the development of civilian suppressor technology beyond reducing the market size?

Anonymous

If you could adjust the inter-baffle volume of a suppressor at will, and if you ran a frequency analysis of the sound signature of a specific caliber and load, could you optimize the suppressor design to act as a series of Helmholtz resonators tuned to the harmonics of the aforementioned caliber and load?

Anonymous

Putting aside for the moment NFA requirements. If you were to design and/or build your own silencer/suppressor, what features would be at the top of your list, what features would you avoid? In other words, a What Would Maxim Do silencer/suppressor.

Anonymous

What is the best strategy for a "universal" suppressor that can be used on any gun with an appropriately threaded barrel? This is to avoid purchasing multiple suppressors for various pistols/rifles/calibers. I guess another way to put is is how well does a .30 cal can suppress a .22 rimfire and .223. What is the best barrel threading or threading/adapter setup?

Anonymous

Can you get a "fuel filter" or "solvent trap" and then register it with the ATF as a suppressor?

Anonymous

Do you think that the development of additive manufacturing processes such as 3D printing will allow for more efficient/lighter/generally better designs in the future?

Nate

Is there any notable technology crossover between the development of suppressors and similar things in other applications like automotive mufflers?

d from birmingham

two things 1. the fuel filter silencers that are registered it is the part that attaches to the gun that is registered. a few companies make these attachments when you buy them they are sent to a nfa dealer to do the paper work and you send the 200 check to the atf. 2. these things often do not function as well as a properly made legal from the start silencer. the solvent trap metal will in fact often break apart when firing rifle caliber rounds.

GooDoughnut

is it possible to acheive the same level of sound dampening as wipes without actually using wipes in the suppressor design, or would this simply result in the supressor being too large?

Anonymous

How exactly did suppressors end up in the NFA? Were suppressors is such common use by criminals that it was seen as necessary to ban them, or was it simply the government throwing scary things into the "ban all scary things" bill?

d from birmingham

they were heavily used by poachers. in fact when silencers were often allowed by states (states have to decide to obey federal nfa law) they had to amend hunting regulations since the hunting laws forbade the use of silencers. there were some murders using them.

Anonymous

Many silencers have been able to mitigate the sound produced by a gun by quite a significant amount. Some to the point where the sound of the gun operating is almost more noticeable than the gun actually firing. What are some significant methods used to mitigate this?

Anonymous

Baffles are used in an exhaust, as are brass or other metal mesh mufling materials, so yes.

Anonymous

What suppressor does Elbonia equip its troops with? I'm thinking it'd be either a Maxim or something like the HK Mk23 phase 2 box suppressor.

Anonymous

If you are able to, should you carry suppressed, if not why not?

LV

I'd like to know more about the improvements being made in suppressor design and function with the advent of 3D metal printing, such as designs from DD and Delta P Designs. Additionally, I am very interested in the current state of suppressor use by militaries worldwide, including both the countries/forces using them and the designs they have chosen to use. Much info is available on US military suppressor use but I can never find much on forces overseas and would love to know more about the players in those markets.

Anonymous

Are there any first-principles design books/papers on suppressor design, or is it all done by guesstimate?

Anonymous

From what I understand, modern suppressors tend to use baffles, followed by wipes, with old designs with media such as steel wool falling out of favor very quickly due to the round count and drop off being even lower than wipe based suppressors. Would there be any benefit to using modern materials with similar complex, irregular shapes such as sintered metal matrixes, or are baffles more effective anyway? Is the sound reduction more from reflected waves canceling each other our or is it from the shape of the suppressor interrupting the sound?

Anonymous

What instruments do they use to determine pressures inside the suppressor during development. Besides math.

Anonymous

What are the key elements to an effective and long lasting suppressor? Or what makes a particular design effective or ineffective? Huge fan of the show, thanks for all you do Ian!

Anonymous

Will a larger caliber suppressor still suffecntly suppress a smaller caliber like a 7.62 for a 5.56?
