Interview with Utreon CEO Edward Brawer (Patreon)

Othais from C&Rsenal and I spent some time chasing with Edward Brawer,  founder and CEO of Utreon. This is a new video platform that aims to compete with Youtube. What makes Utreon different from all the other platforms that have come and go? A lot, and that's what this conversation is about - but in short, it's founded on having a fundamentally better structure than YouTube, and not simply trying to grab the content that YouTube disallows. Utreon also includes Patreon-like channel subscription and support in its system, and may actually have the potential to really compete with YouTube. Othais and I both think it's a really exciting prospect.

Utreon is right now moving into its beta stage, and is looking for viewers to try out the system, without opening it up to the whole public quite yet. So we thought we would invite you, our Patrons, to check it out! See what you think:

I just signed up. Do you know when/if the subscription benefits will be filled out? Right now they're all generic.

I don't know - I would assume that will depend on how much tweaking and fixing the basic subscription system requires to work out the bugs.

I would suggest a name change. If you have to ask how to spell it, it isn't going to catch on organically and it will be difficult to search for. The name also seems like a mashup of Youtube and Patreon. It's generally a bad idea to base your business name on your competitor's brand.

Just tried to subscribe myself, but saw that billing information was only for the US and Canada. Should I still subscribe even outside of those two countries, and how?

I signed up, and so far it looks good. One thing to note is that I already support you on Patreon. There is no way I'm sending money on utreon, Patereon, Library, Bitchchute etc. Every time I get asked by a creator to sign up for a new service or platform, especially if there is a pay wall, it lessens my commitment to that creator. Yep, totally understand. This is a unique situation because Utreon is in beta; if it were fully public I would expect people to move form Patreon to Utreon, not support on both.

I really dislike (in: License to Utreon) that part that the can: use name, identity, use the name, identity, likeness and voice (or other biographical information) that you submit in connection with such User Content.

Generally FW sound and video is good quality video/sound (I know it's hard to get the assholes out of the background at the shooting range . . . ) This doesn't work at all.

Could you make a shorter version with better audio? Or maybe a post here giving the summary highlights of the talk? I like the idea of an alternate to YouTube, and combining it with subscriptions ala Patreon sound good.

Sorry, but I really don't have a way to do that. The short version is that Utreon is a new video hosting platform that hopes to take on YouTube by having a fundamentally better foundation. It includes a mechanism for viewers to financially support channels, but is not a paywall and will also use advertising. It retains basic rules of content, but has a much better appeal system than YouTube. It is dedicated to transparency and clarity on these issues.

I don't know where to ask this question, it seems improper both on Youtube and here. Discard it if it is off-topic. The question is: are you prohibited by Youtube rules from saying aloud the full name of Rock Island Auction Company? Through all the latest videos you keep saying "RIA", which you have not done before. Is YT policy the reason?

YouTube does not allow "promotion of gun sellers", but doesn't specify what that actually means. So I am avoiding saying "auction" as a proactive move against the possibility that their algorithm will use video transcripts to flag videos.

@Forgotten_Weapons What kind of percentages are you looking at on your end for if I move support to you from Patreon to Utreon? The $5 first month badge idea and supporting this YouTube competitor is tempting but I don't want to hurt you either.
