How the Gun Auction Process Works: Ian Buys a Kar98a!

http://www.patreon.com/ForgottenWeapons https://www.floatplane.com/channel/ForgottenWeapons/home Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! http://shop.bbtv.com/collections/forgotten-weapons Until this, I had never actually attended one of Rock Island's auctions in person. They invited me out, and gave me some auction credit to use to make a video about how the auction process actually works. I've been wanting a WW1 German Kar98a carbine for a long time, and this seemed like a perfect time to find one. So I will take you through the whole process here, from auction registration to scouring through the guns on Preview Day to bidding and finally to unpacking the spoils after they arrived! 9% sales tax jesus christ.

Bought my first items from RIA at that same auction. Definitely have to factor in the buyers premium, possible taxes, shipping, FFL fees for how high you are willing to bid. Ian, I'm curious in this case of where you had to buy 4 guns as a lot, do you know if it's possible to only have the KAR98 delivered, and to leave the other three at RIA to put up as a lot for sale at their next auction? Or would you have to take delivery of all four and then send the other 3 back to RIA later?

Couple of quick questions. Are the gun lots bundled by the "current" owner, or does RIA bundle it? I assume they don't bundle lots from more than one owner? If so, how would they break down the price per gun? Say I had nine guns, would they make a five and a four lot, or three, three lots? Just curious.

ForgottenWeapons

As far as I know, RIA makes the lotting decisions. I don't know the exact process, but in general they try to keep similar types of guns together (modern vs milsurp, handguns vs rifles vs shotguns, etc) and keep the expected sale price above $1000 or so but not so high that they lose potential bidders. They've got a ton of experience doing this, and I expect that have a pretty thorough system in place.

Enjoyed this very much, Thanks

I know I'm a sad man but I do like seeing such good packaging...

Thanks for doing this Ian. I enjoyed seeing what a major auction house does with gun auctions. If I couldn't see and handle potential purchases I'm not sure I'd go through this though. I like going to my local shop, Ron Peterson Guns in Albuquerque where Ron has likely picked up guns being sold by collectors and they're all out on the floor to see and handle.

Yeah, if you can't inspect the guns in person it is quite difficult to bid realistically. That's why descriptions and auction company reputation are so important - bur for these Regional type auctions at RIA, they don't have the manpower to give everything a proper description. This sale was originally intended more for people who were able to attend Preview Day in person.

You guys are so lucky to have auctions dedicated to guns in the US. In France, the descriptions are more on the line of "French Enfield-carcano, 8mm maybe?" (with the exception of Drouot, who at least tries to make a decent description most of the time). And don't even hope to see them or ask about the guns. what you see online is what you get.

Wow, so weird as a Brit seeing warehouses full of guns with people just walking around, and then buying them and getting them delivered straight to their house. Really interesting video though, the actual auction got my heart rate up a bit hoping Ian would win the one he wanted!

Hey, Ian. I was curious, which of these rifles you were planning to keep, and which you were planning on selling!
