I wanted to let you guys know before it hits, Patreon is now being required to charge sales tax on pledges. The amount will vary depending on what pledge level and what jurisdiction you are in, but the laws actually requires that it be added on separately, and not taken out of the listed price for a product (or pledge, in this case). I would rather see it taken out of the pledge invisible to you, but that is not an option legally.

There have been a couple major court cases centered on states trying to collect sales tax from out of state sales, and they have mostly come down on the side of taxation.

Different jurisdictions have different definitions of what is and is not taxed, and one of the things I had to do as a creator here was to define what the different perks are, and what their different dollar values are. I figured that most of you are pledging primarily to support the work and not to buy the various perks, and so I put the value of the perks quite low. Happily, the "general support" sort of donation is most likely to be seen as tax exempt in most places. I hope this will minimize the impact on you, and that you will still find it worth supporting Forgotten Weapons!

Edit to add: This should not have any impact on Patrons outside the US. Folks in the EU already have the VAT applied, and that will not change or increase.

Will this affect international Patreons?

Patrons in the UK already pay sales tax (VAT).

K. D. Campbell

Thanks for the heads up - yours is the only channel of the ones that I support that has conveyed this info.

Anonymous

It is a donation, a gift, for crying out loud.

Anonymous

Is there anything we need to do to select our pledge as only for "general support" and not to get any of the perks? I'd be fine opting out of the perks. I just donate to make sure FW is funded :)

Han

For my part, I would consider it a donation, rather than purchasing something as all the videos I watch are already free on the forgotten weapons website.

Anonymous

Is tax based on your location or that of the person donating?

Anonymous

As an added complication, I’m in the UK. Are taxes applied to foreign donations?

Ryan D Thorne

I support your channel because I appreciate what you do.

Alden Skinner

Fortunately for me, Oregon has no sales tax.

Anonymous

I live in Sweden and I don't think that this will effect us. I have only you and one more that I donate to and I don't ask for anything in return except for good content(and you deliver that on a daily basis)

Anonymous

FFS, it's a donation. Perks are GIFTS. Like PBS tote bags. START A CHURCH, IAN. You've already got a popularized moniker that's reasonably apt, if a tad sacrilegious. Or, start a non-profit: Small Arms Humane Society. Oh wait, that might already be taken :P

I'm from Hungary and sales tax has always been added to my monthly invoices.

ForgottenWeapons

If there are more than just a few people who would like it, I can add new pledge levels that are specifically perk-less.

ForgottenWeapons

A lot of Patreon creators do specifically use the platform to sell access to things; Forgotten Weapons should be fairly minimally impacted by this.

Josh Ross

It is what it is. Not going to change my donation. Keep up the great work.

Time to throw some proverbial tea into the proverbial harbor.

Steve Doucet

No sales tax for me in NH. Live Free or Die!

Brian Ingram

Thank you Ian for your integrity & proactiveness in communicating this to your supporters. Won't change what I donate one damn bit :) but it's good to see you afforded everyone the time & opportunity to evaluate that for themselves. Kudos!!

Matthew Doye

They've been taking the tax for EU residents for years.

Anonymous

All your patreon supporters in Europe already pay VAT.

Jevidar Ba'cho

I'm still going to be in as both a Forgotten Weapons and InRangeTV patron. No tax will change my enjoyment of the content.

Anonymous

I agree what Brian Ingram (and many others) have said. While I mind what the gov'ment is doing that is not enough for me to change my Patronage. Keep doing what you're doing.

Anonymous

Your modesty is showing, Ian. I find your content worthy even if the government chooses to extract its pound of flesh to support its omni-various addiction of excessive intrusion into our lives generally and specifically into our informal entertainment agreement. TL;DR version: Your channel rocks and we want to keep paying you because we think you are awesome.

Anonymous

:( Won't change my donation.

Anonymous

Thank you for keeping us posted. I’m not going to change anything. Keep the great content coming!

Lostngone

They can’t tax religious donations to Gun Jesus!!!1!

Hozi

Simple question : I'm UK 🇬🇧 so I already pay 20% at the moment, does this mean an addinal US 🇺🇸 tax will be added on because of the states decision?

Anonymous

Been paying tax on my donations since the start like others have mentioned already Ian. Although it’s unfortunate as I’m not in it for the perks more so to just support Forgotten weapons (and IRTV) it’s still more than worth it to support such a great project. I hope this change doesn’t have too drastic an impact on your US Support!

Bpendragon

No worries from me mate. WA state is so voracious in trying to get its sales tax that I'm often more surprised when I don't have to add 10%.

Martin Morehouse

Thanks for the clear explanation; I'm still getting a great deal here.

Anonymous

This is ok with me. Considering the amount of entertainment and education I get from your content, my pledge should already be much higher than it is. We appreciate everything you do

Scott

Ian, I’m embarrassed that my declining income doesn’t let me give more. Just keep doing what you do so well, and let us know if you need to raise more money. We can all go sell some plasma... ;-)

Flinxie

Willing, able, and happy to support this great community and project.

I’ve always had to pay VAT in addition to my 20€ monthly donation. Well, whatever. Kind of annoying that I have to pay more so lazy people in the southern EU can fuck around all day and not work.

Anonymous

Not sure if this is an EU thing, but from the UK I've always paid VAT (Value Added Tax) on patreon donations.

Nate

Should we expect some kind of notification from Patreon about how that will be handled?

Anonymous

I'm in Oregon which has no sales tax, so hopefully the full amount still goes directly to you!

Anonymous

Thanks for the heads-up!

Anonymous

been paying UK value added tax from the outset
