1911 vs M1 Carbine in a Practical Match

http://www.patreon.com/ForgottenWeapons https://www.floatplane.com/channel/ForgottenWeapons/home Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! http://shop.bbtv.com/collections/forgotten-weapons The M1 Carbine was developed to be a personal defense weapon to replace the 1911 pistol for groups of soldiers like drivers, artillery crews, and others who did not need a full-size M1 Garand but did need a firearm of some sort. The idea was that a light carbine would be much easier to use effectively with limited training, and effective to a much longer range. Basically, the 1911 was recognized to be an expert's weapon, and the Army needed something easier to use. Now, many folks will take it for granted that the M1 Carbine will meet this requirement easily, but I think it will be interesting to try it out. So, today I am shooting the four stages of a Backup Gun Match with a 1911 and an M1 Carbine. This match has stages at close range and low round count - really much closer range than the M1 Carbine was expected to be capable of. So, I think this setup gives the 1911 the best possible odds. And yet, we see that the Carbine still beat it handily; with he closest stage being a draw between the two. The Carbine is easier to hit with a long range, faster to fire followup shots with, and more forgiving of errors. In short, it is exactly what the Army wanted! Contact: Forgotten Weapons 6281 N. Are you guys back to doing matches (are things opening back up) or is this old footage?

Real test would be to have novice shooter run the drills. Ian's skill mitigates 1911 disadvantages substantially.

I would take a carbine over a Pistle any day. They are just easier to shoot well. I have had lots of training with Hand guns but still don’t like them all that much.

Maybe, but John Browning > Carbine Williams...

Looks like a fun way to spend the day. I was raised to be and always will be a big 1911 aficionado and have carried one as an infantryman in combat. With that said, when it comes to use it you'd be better off with any long gun than a pistol unless the ranges are super short. I would add that in combat, you don't take a shot and see if you hit and re-engage or move on like people do in these contests. You shoot until the man drops and continue to the next target. While you are doing this, hopefully your buddies are doing the same. Don't worry, the Army/Marine Corps will get you plenty more ammo.

I have always liked the M1 carbine. It was the first real rifle I ever fired and I managed to score expert in basic training (Air Force 1964) with minimal training. The carbines we used in training were, I am sure, WWII vintage and not in the best of condition. They were well cared for but had sent thousands if not millions of rounds down range. Nearly all my shooting today is pistols at an indoor range but I would like very much to own a shooting condition M1 carbine. As always thanks for the great video.

A long gun is always better than a pistol, even at pistol ranges. So Sayeth the Clint. Well, I've been playing with that lately- with PCC, pistol length AR, standard ARs, and brought out one of my M1 carbines. The m1 carbine has two issues. 1: magazines. and 2: magazines. (okay, actually, the reliability is very good mechanically on the rifle, but the design is OOOOLLLLDDDDD and a modern redesign with more modularity and better subcomponent systems would be a lot more attractive. mini14 versus ar15 type stuff) It's no surprise the carbine fares better. It's a better weapon in every way (except magazines) - despite the slow sighting system it has. I would, including caliber choice, prefer a modern (pmag reliability) m1 carbine over an AR15 as a civilian shooter. It's a ridiculously easy gun to shoot. (and back to urban rifle and brush war concepts- yeah, it got used as a battle rifle and did pretty well. Ian likes to make a consistent note that it was never intended to fill the role of assault rifle- but it *did*)

Love the split screen / side by side!!

The only problem with your demonstration is that you are a very good pistol-man. The average guy would double/triple your pistol times but do almost as well with the carbine.

I like the idea of giving the pistol every advantage here, as it shows that the Carbine is still the better solution.
