What's wrong with drinking it straight and getting trashed?

moosemaimer

I live in New Hampshire, where ALL the liquor is sold by the government. Cheap as hell. Highest per-capita in the country!

Anonymous

Well distilled liquor is actually very smooth compared to what people expect despite what people expect. The burn is coming mostly from the less desirable alcohols that are in the start and end of the distillation process which cheap distilleries keep in because more product pretty batch means it is cheaper to make

Ian, if you're a fan of ginger beer try on of Joe Scialom's Bastard cocktails. Personal favourite is the dead bastard.

Anonymous

..This is too good to be 170 proof rocket fuel, is that a back handed complement, or just a really good compliment? I think the second option.

Anonymous

Yep, if the distiller is being selective about where the foreshots end and the tails begin, it can be super smooth. Though personally, I want high percentage spirits for mixing with shellac for furniture finish

Follow up comments 1. Hillbilly Mule actually make a lot more sense than Moscow Mule. 2 If I had a Stg44 breaking it a DB2 would be the coolest story I could ever tell about it, PS I would love to see the Anvil were Mark fixed it !

david weilbaecher jr

you need to do an after action report of the effects on the hillbilly mule, as you felt the next day.

Wish we could legally distill spirits for personal consumption in the good old USA but the tax man wants his money.

First the Shot Show Plague, and now the Blackberry Botulism!

Hogeland's Whiskey Rebellion is a good read. Washington was kind of a dick.

Not an imbiber of sprits (don't have a problem with those who do) but for some reason, I've had multiple people just nearly force their particular favorite 'moonshine' upon me over the years. I've even had various types of traditional spirts provided to me from locales all around the world, including a sample of homemade-vodka made by a gentleman in Northern Sweden that was contained in a medical-grade container that he said was to prevent the degradation. After trying, I'm not sure if he was concerned about the sample or the container. However, as I live in supposedly tI liv e in the area that was proclaimed the "moonshine capital of US', my opinion is the still buried in the backwoods of the Southern Appalachians made from site grown corn is certainly not a guarantee of a smooth product. However, it does act as a pretty good varnish stripping agent. Beware of moonshine that cannot be contained in a milk jug - Mason jars only.

Awesome Ian, glad to hear you did well. I have some amazing Poire Williams and Mirabelle made by/from my French family. Traditionally a digestive or after dinner drink, served over a sugar cube in a small glass... Would love to share it. The french are amazing people.

If you really want something pure and with a kick, you should try Polish "Spirytus Rektyfikowany", it's 95% alcohol (192prf ). https://www.empirewine.com/liquor/polmos-spirytus-192prf-750ml-rektyfikowany-i20855/ It's a great base for coctails, eggnog or liqueurs. Please DON'T drink it straight, people have died trying!

chris

Always ask a Pole before buying furniture polish/drain cleaner because some of it is really smooth :)

Chris Crowther

I got horrendously drunk on Moscow Mules once when I was in my teens and couldn't face them again.

Ryan Butler

Karl: You know it’s remarkable we’ve never been visited by the ATF. Ian: Hold my chartreuse. L

honestly being from WV. and having some experience with "moonshine" 170 proof is very potent and frankly just by taste you couldn't discern the difference between proofs. Its actually the quality of ingredients and the process and equipment that give it a back taste. If yours is smooth as you say I may have been filtered and yeah be careful with it.That stuff will punch you in the back of your head when you least expect it!

Anonymous

Nah, roughly 20% ABV (40 proof) is sufficient to denature botulism toxin.

Wait...what? Where was I when they tried to set each other on fire??!!!

I've had some experience with high quality "tax-free spirits" produced in the western NC area. Yes, it can put you on your rear in a heartbeat. A little goes a long way....

Many years ago I was given some corn-based moonshine; there were a couple bottles, each a different proof, IIRC ranging from something like 110 proof on the low end to 160ish on the other. As with Ian's description, they too were dangerously "soft on the palate"; thankfully the hangover was likewise not as bad as I feared it would be the morning after the first evening I spent making mixed drinks with it...

Anonymous

One quick method to estimate the proof is demonstrated here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i6Wmn-oFn0

Now 190 proof... That’ll get you trashed quick, for everclear I usually mix it with Mtn. Dew everything else I just drink it straight.

Grayson Taylor

On the note of DB, who guy took classic semi auto? 4th overall, so whichever M1 he was using high five to that dude.

Sphynx

“It’s very burny” Great, now Bernie Sanders is going to try and use that as his new slogan...

Sweet, sweet alcohol... yet another Forgotten Weapon....

I expect we'll be hearing soon about the BATFE goons who busted down Ian's door at 3am & shot his dog to take him into custody as a material witness against the moonshiner who supplied him... ::p

Anders Weidik Bendsen

That fever tree ginger beer with a dash of bootstrap and a splash of brown rum plus a drop of lime is absolutely stunning. Prolly has a name, but I'm kinda a pleb.

I had 180 proof Irish poteen once. That batch was considered an accident and literally used for wounds and visiting North American relatives :p needs to say I was quite ill later on :p

Tiger in man's clothing

When I was stationed in Germany I was invited to a party where we drank "Flaming Dragons" made with Stroh and Green Chartreuse that was set alight and downs while flaming. I have also had some 150ish Arizona brewed tax-free spirits that was very smooth and nearly flavorless.
