I am aware of that situation and it really does come down to exactly how you said it. I had a situation at my work, not firearms but very similar in terms of the arguments and facts. Not only did I have to collect as much data, information and facts that I could but I then had to explain how it is miss leading data depending how it is looked at. Came down to the fact the shit works, you do something outside its design requirements it will give you issues. Peoples egos and biases really get in the way of functioning. G36 not the best gun for sure, but I definitely want a semiauto one some day, just not Tommybuilt because yeah not going there

I know both the corporate politics of this, and the logistical challenges (some of which are legal) are almost impossible to overcome but let's say... A dozen or so sample rifles brought by HK to, oh, say, Arizona, a nice hot place for a test, that would be interesting. As for the converted semi-autos, I just hope not all the SL-8s disappear because of that before I can get one. Grey space rifle!

People making statements about a rifle they have never even handled and or shot, Say it ain't so. LOL, Enjoyed the video all the same.

God, Ian, you are absolutely right about how much politics gets into this sort of thing. I've been working government contracts for well over twenty years now, and it still appalls me just how adversarial my counterparts are and how quickly things ratchet up to accusation.

The G36 is one of the few rifles I've tried that I instantly decided I'd get one if I ever had the chance. It's tied with the MP5K as my favorite full auto rifles.

The German Defence Minister who nominally presided over this sorry saga is now President of the European Commission. Definitely a good fit for the person spec for the job.

I read on the internet the Bundeswehr is quietly transitioning from polymer to wood for their G36 bayonet handles.

Mrgunsngear

I have a factory select fire G36E if you'd like to conduct the test yourself for the channel (I've done it myself but you have WAY more viewers) 👍🏾

You did a great job.

Ian, Thank you for such a cogently presented discussion. I hope your discussion of anecdotal evidence vs scientific evidence goes viral into other conspiracy theory worlds: vaccination, impeachment, etc

The Bunsdeswehr doesn't issue bayonets in the first place never did. Not for the G3 nor the G36. In the case of the G36 there has been a bayonet developed (by EICKHORN) along with the Rifle. But it wasn't purchased because after the unification the Bundeswehr had huge stockpiles of AK74 bayonets (Yes they fit the German G36) but they also were never issued to the Troops for political reasons. Could you share the source for that?!? Thanks Alex

The phenomenon of uneven solar heating shifting a gun's group is at least very real. We experienced it in the 105mm gun on the M60 series tank, and mostly resolved the issue by adding a thermal shroud over the barrel. And if it can affect a tank cannon, I'd be surprised if it didn't effect the much smaller barrel of a rifle.

Because my original comment got lost in the Patreon Universe here a second time. First Ian thank you so much for geting in to this "turmoil". I totally agree with everything you said but still would like to bring up two additional points. First you briefly mentioned Ammunition. Which I am convinced played a big roll at the start of it all. How can I know right I can't but, I live in the vicinity of not only one of the main Ammunition suppliers but also to the procurement department of the Bundeswehr. This Ammo Company has long standing quality control issues. Second the whole thing pivots around the worst and rightly most disliked Minister of Defence Germany ever had which didn't had the slides knowledge but did anything to make things worse. If for better or worse the Bundeswehr is finally getting a new service rifle (after less than 30 years) which will come surprise surprise from H&K!!!

This video is a good assessment, and I think accurately describes the engineering compromises that led to the weapon. Coincidentally, I actually wound up shooting a select-fire rental G36 post-sample gun last weekend, and honestly, I was impressed. I think the AR pattern is a better rifle with better ergonomics, but the G36 is a better shooting gun than I was expecting it to be.

In fact, there is a H&K Assessment on the impact of prolonged burst fires (according to the 'new' standards of the Bundeswehr) on a 3-shot group accuracy - they tested 10 production guns, and compared it (as they wrote- not scientifically) with a single AK-47. The grouping of the G36 was increased due to heat (apr. 2 times the Diameter), but still, even at 300 meters (320 yards), over 90% of the shots cover a man-sized (E-type) silhouette; The single AK-47 performed worse than that. Still, I never saw an report by the German Ministry of Defense that support their own position; Continuous fire is not something expected by any Assault-Rifle type weapon - there are Machine Guns for this; The M-16 manuals point out a continuous (surpressive) rate of fire - 15 rounds / minute, which are single shots with large time-gaps in between;

A similar thing happenned in Spain with the CETME L problems: many could be traced to Santa Barbara / INI ammo (very hard primers for the weakened hammer springs and soft firing pin tips, just for starters).

Much worse were the Spanish Army trials in 1996 won by the G36. It was clear from the beginning what rifle was going to "win" (by political reasons, Germany had to be awarded the contract, or the Leopard would not be licensed for production here). Compared to the other rifles, I very much doubt it was the "best" in any category, not even price, or license agreements. Also, the thing that got the Steyr AUG disqualified (non-STANAG magazines) didin't affect the G36, for example.
