Apocrypha - 3D Video

Yes, please do a run of a couple of videos with this. Just as a test bed though, I would avoid having it on everything

I'd watch 3D videos.

If anybody wants a decent Google Cardboard headset I would recommend the View-Master VR for ~$15. Much sturdier than an actual cardboard headset, but still pretty cheap. If you want something better I would avoid Cardboard and go with Google Daydream or GearVR if your phone is supported, otherwise Oculus Go.

Only way to be sure about this stuff is to experiment, and it's cool that you want to try it out Ian. Such amusing irony that a man whose work is so focused in the past of forgotten and outdated weapons is so willing to embrace the future in technology

I have that but there is no strap to keep it on your head and no way to adjust focus. Its nice for the price though.

I am a 3D artist who works with the Air Force. We are currently doing Augmented Reality for training.

Benelli vídeo coming up?!

wow cutting edge, except your computer not cutting edge. What camera do you film everything on now?

Sweet, there really needs to be more 3d stuff. I have an awesome passive 3D television that I don't get to use that feature of enough. The picture quality isn't as high as the active shutter glasses 3d televisions, but it uses the same glasses they use for 3d movies, which makes getting glasses for it both quite cheep and very easy.

In my opinion it is a software issue that your laptop can't handle the stereoscopic video well. Normally a program delegates graphical work to the graphics card of your pc in stead of doing it normally with the rest of the code. This is what drivers are for. #1 step to see if you can remedy your problem without buying something is to install all drivers and google for all your video editing programs whether you need an extra plugin or whatever to properly do stereoscopic video. I hope this leads to finding a solution quicker.

Cool look forward to the videos. I have seen 3 D around for about 10 years ,But there was not much content to watch ,At least good stuff like firearm videos.

A reason to plug my Oculus Rift back in (seriously, it's been sat unplugged for months).

Video encoding is generally heavily CPU bound. GPU offload usually only works for specific codecs and often results in poorer quality encoding than a regular software based encoder. You're better off getting a CPU with a high clock rate.

Neat, and I look forward to it. I don't know if it's worth the $$$$ to try and get that processing power out of a laptop. Sounds like you'll a more powerful desktop PC. Good luck!

Andy Maidment

You probably need a new processor and a lot more/faster memory. I'm sure Karl can get you set up, the question is if you've got the cash.

I don't know how close you will be able to get with that thing. Would be awesome if you could give a dissecting microscope type view to show off the best examples of finish work and the shape/ structure of powder , etc

moosemaimer

well, back when this stuff was invented, most of it WAS cutting-edge. Imagine how amazed people must have been when something like the percussion cap came out, instead of having to file down a chunk of flint-bearing rock.

Looks like I might have to get myself an oculus rift or something like it soon. I would love to see some regular 4k video though, I think there are a lot more 4k screens than VR headsets around at the moment

The BIGGEST issue with the 3D video right now is those !@#$!@#$ fisheye lenses, which distort everything. Try to find out if Lucid offers some "telephoto adapters" for those fool things, so you can narrow the angle of view down from 180deg to something approaching normal, non-peripheral focused human vision [~ 70deg, the "mild telephoto" beloved of portrait shooters everywhere.] Then limit your content to supplementary videos of the detail views & dis/assembly of firearms until the rest of us catch up to the "coming thing..." JMNSHO

Bruce Brodnax

S/B only offered via "supplementary content" linked in video descriptions until the tech is fully- & broadly-implementd [basically, everyone except the devoted followers of Ludd like me have it.]

Hi Ian -- Microsoft's augmented reality device is called a HoloLens.

Have you ever looked into getting a cheap endoscope for the "it's hard to see from back there" moments? Not for a whole video, just a few seconds off close ups.

Anonymous

you get a endoscope CHEAP on amazon very nice for use on guns, barrells ect….
