A while back we announced a contest for cover art for my upcoming book on French military rifles - and we received a remarkable number of really impressive entries! I reserved the right to choose the one I thought best to use on the book, but two other designers will also receive copies of the book.

Those two are up to you! We have a survey running until the end of November for you to pick your favorites. Each person gets one entry, and you can choose the three designs you think are best. The two designs with the most votes at the end of the month will earn their designers signed copies of my book when it prints (if one of them is also my choice to use, then the third-place design will get a book).

A huge thanks to everyone who submitted a design - I was really blown away by how awesome so many of them are. It will be truly difficult to have to choose just one!

I have followed your channel for the past five years, very informative and just plan fun.

I did the survey!

Wow - so many absolutely awesome designs!

None of the designs are bad so you really can't go wrong with any of them. It really comes down to the style you prefer. I suspect that no one will be buying this book just based on the cover but of course a good cover never hurts.

in the comments i said "less is more" ... the covers which feature simple silhouettes of the various rifles are the best ones. while some grabbed my eye (some of the renderings of soldiers are neat) overall i don't feel that they add as much to the cover as the simple silhouettes and tasteful absence of other frills. especially arresting was the brownish cover with various portions of the rifles, at an upward angle, cut off at the edges. that reminded me of the mass-market "small arms encyclopedia" books you see all over amazon. a classier design is warranted for a classier author. :-)

Just put a big picture that covers the entire front cover of the book of Ian wearing a black mime's beret and a T shirt that says "viva la france" on it while holding his chauchat in one hand a famas in the other with a big goofy grin on his face!

I liked the cameo appearance in one of the covers.

It's an impressive set of options, but I'm pretty sure some of them are based on copyrighted material

Some of the designs go a little crazy with the 19th-century flavor; a bit odd especially as most of the book will be 20th-century firearms.

I can’t wait to get my signed copy!

Some really terrific entries, here.

I think it would have been cool to have an 1866 attired soldier facing off against a 2018 attired soldier, but I lack the skillz to make a submission of my own.

Anonymous

Lots of really good ones.

I submitted an entry well ahead of the deadline and received an email confirmation, but it is not among those being presented for voting. Was it never received, disqualified for some reason, or just selected out? I realize there are many entrants and you likely have no time to respond to every one, but I would appreciate knowing in case there was a technical glitch of some sort (and so I can improve my artwork in the future).

Very difficult being allowed to choose only one!

Wow, lots of great choices! Hard to narrow it down to 3

CavScout

Sorry, wanted to vote but was unwilling to give 'surveyhero' my contact info for them to sell.

Anonymous

Same here. :-( It would have been nice if the voting was done in Patreon.

Wow, I figured everyone knew enough to have a "throw-away" email account for this sort of thing by now? I've always used my yahoo email for such things....

CavScout

I had several, but they became either lost or more important than intended... As for 'knew enough,' I'm running less conventional browsers with three computers, two using VPN's, etc... So I value my privacy. Just ran out of burner email accounts. Don't care to do a temp one either.

CavScout

In fact... this Patreon account is on one of those (originally) burner email accounts. Haha

"I voted" (sticker)

My favorite part was just going through them all to find the various depictions of Ian. Almost died laughing.. Voted on the one with him in the old french military uniform, clean, classy, and Ians on it.. perfect

Anonymous

Yeah, I think it would be a little crazy to actually choose that one, but god I hope he does. Those are funny as shit.

MattC10/63

Voted for the simple covers with the French flag and a timeline of rifles.

Regarding the 'runners up': why not put the two main runners up inside one of the dust cover flaps? Then all the others could be printed as thumbbnails etc on the reverse face of the dust cover? A nice little extra for the purchasers and artists, but should add much (if any) cost?
