I can sense your excitement for the whole project in your voice! Can't say Ive ever had a particular interest in French stuff before finding your channel, but I have a new appreciation for it now. Ill have to check out your book when it comes out! And oh yeah, I STILL have yet to see a Berthier in person in my area!

It mildly shocks to see just how many of only one rifle type a collector ends up with. Ian, you must have an absolute ton of boom sticks! Jealous.

I could give a Flying f**k about these sorts of French rifles/weaponry...at least from a "it's French! LIKE IT!" standpoint. But Hot-Damn! I can't wait for this book! The time - and heart, TBH - I have put into FW (and IRTV) videos is immense, so regardless of my lacking in the Francophile department, I am 101% (as my old wrestling coach would have said; he understood that over 100% was nonsense, but tried to instill its virtue in us regardless) onboard with this project, and will happily support you in making it become reality. Sh*t; perhaps you'll make a Francophile out of me yet - who knows? Thanks for all that you do, Ian, and *especially* thanks to your wife for letting - and better yet, I hope, *helping* you do it (I've got my own of 17 years, so I know the sorts of stuff you go through to Love Thy Other Through Thick And Thin (I just made that up, but the capital letters *do* make it sound more important, eh?) as I honestly would be living a less-"informed" life without your videos...one that just wouldn't give me the same energy upon which to arise from my bed every day, and so from that (at the very least) standpoint I thank you ever so much for Forgotten Weapons. :D

Any chance you’ll be offering preorders and/or signed copies of your book? I’m really enjoying the Apocrypha perk!

ForgottenWeapons

Yep, I will have both. The preorder will come when things are a bit closer to completion (ie, after the layout and editing are done).

Looking forward to the book. I have a Berthier I can’t quite ID!!! I’m sure the book will help answer some questions.

You should offer signed books with a page shot through with some of the weapons covered in the book

Love the weird conversions and can't wait to get the book. I'm sure you don't know that there is also a Romanian modification to the Berhiers that we got in WW1, it was done in eraly WW2, around 9200 Berthier rifles were converted to carbines by cutting them to carbine length an bending the bolt 90 degrees. There is at least one of these conversion in the military museum in Bucharest. If you would be interested in some more photos of this rifle I could make some. I don't know how to send you a picture.

And what about that cool cuirassier Berthier carabine? I thought that was one of the coolest. Or are carabines coming in another video?

Anonymous

Do you have the Gendarmerie carabine 1890?

Most Patreon creators offer a handful of different perks to entice people to donate more, and these usually entail special and exclusive content. I am not doing that.... These are your words Ian... I am a great fan of your work and I am supporting you with a buck a month. Unfortunately I am not in the position to increase my support so I am missing out some great content. I think you should consider that other supporters should be able to view this content.

ForgottenWeapons

I think it is reasonable to be able to change my mind on something after a few years. This extra material is specifically not gun-detail related (with this one being a bit of an exception, were it not posted publicly) and thus it does not violate my founding principle of keeping information universally, freely available.

ForgottenWeapons

Yes, I would be interested in seeing that - my email address is admin@forgottenweapons.com . Thanks!

I own a cool carabine 1890 converted into mousqueton 1892, there's still the "0" behind the "2" ;) if you need picture, just ask. Good luck with your book :)

I would have to agree. I think Apocrypha is more the equivalent of long-form Snapchat stories or little vlogs, not "entries into the database of Forgotten Weapons."

Hey Ian, I also have a Théorie Berthier. It took me weeks to even figure out that it said "Théorie" because it is a little bit faded and maybe overstamped. It also has a large "X" on the stock. From what little info I could find, that means that it was taken out of service and maybe not in firing condition. I've only put 20 rounds through it but it seemed to function perfectly fine. It has an "N" stamped 1907-15 Continsouza receiver but the date on the barrel is MAC 1930 and it has all other interwar upgrades. I'm thinking that it was mostly rebuilt by Châtellerault in 1930 and put back in service but I don't understand why it has the Théorie stock.

John S Wren

Wow. Just Wow. Really looking forward to this. Love to know more about the "Théorie" carbine. Are these like UK "DP" rifles - unsuitable/unsafe for use?

Anonymous

They're not necessarily unsafe to shoot as long as there are no holes drilled into the chamber/barrel. I think Théorie rifles may be more similar to Japanese Type 38/99s that have been given to military schools yet still retain their rifling. Hard for me to say for certain though. The only real information I've found is on French gun boards and my French is iffy.

Anonymous

Having seen all the apocrypha content. I agree completely with this.

So, I don't know alot about these, but I speak French. For what its worth, translating from French Forum posts on "Theorie" rifles: They are marked as such to indicate that they are training rifles for an official school. Generally this means military school, but it could also be academy for the various police, gendarme, or CRS academies. It might be used for drill purposes and a "theorie" rifle might be deactivated, but the marking itself in no way indicates a deactivated firearm. Primary use would be weapons familiarization and marksmanship training.

There is also another post I found that describes their provenance as basically blem rifles. Specifically the poster says they were perfectly functional, but were outside of accepted manufacturing tolerances in some capacity. As such, there was the risk of parts interchangeability problems come time to repair/replace/service/upgrade, so they were given out as training rifles.

Anonymous

Thanks Pete, it didn't occur to me that théorie could also refer to blemished or out-of-spec. Mine definitely is not deactivated.

Anonymous

Anytime. Yeah, the gist of the post I read over on tircollection was that they were marked like that so as not to enter into "operational" use where parts incompatibility might be a problem - no indication of them being unsafe to shoot.

Very interesting type for sure
