I have an opportunity coming up to get my hands on some (fictional) prop guns from some well-known movies. Would you guys be interested in videos on those? Or should I stick to just real guns?

Edit: Okay, that's a sufficient deluge of positive answers. I will include thm in the videos I do at this place. Thanks! :)

BTW, these will probably start appearing in December.

Comments

Anonymous

I would absolutely be interested in those videos

Anonymous

I’d enjoy that.

Anonymous

Do it!

Anonymous

Go for it. It will be interesting.

MattC10/63

Sorta depends for me...

Anonymous

Would be interesting, perhaps comparing them to the real guns they are based on, where applicable.

Anonymous

Why the hell not, if they are pop culture icons they have made their way into history for sure

Corey Allhands

That would be cool, if just to see what they're based on, if anything.

Anonymous

Sounds interesting. I would like to see them to. Thanks for asking.

Anonymous

Allays Interested in anything that you come up with.

Anonymous

I would be curious on how they would theoretically work

Anonymous

Eh. Unless there’s an interesting historical/mechanical component I’d say not really.

Anonymous

Sounds cool to me, and a good way to bring in new people who normally wouldn’t have found your channel otherwise. Do it

Anonymous

Sure. I've always been curious as to how some prop guns are made, and what guns they mix together to make one fake one.

Anonymous

I think if they're based on real guns or use parts from them it'd be interesting to see and hear about.

Andrew Bethards

I think that if you’re interested in it, we will as well.

Anonymous

I’d be interested, as already mentioned especially if there’s detail about what they’re based on.

Anonymous

Ian - I would be interested if they have some hook to actual firearms history. Maybe why they were chosen for the movie or how their appearance in the movie influenced actual firearms development/ownership patterns/subsequent history. I’d also like a 10-part series on how the Mini-14 enabled the A-Team to beat all comers.

Anonymous

yes! always up for more interesting content

Anonymous

Do it! Some prop guns are made from real guns but with a fake chassis like the Starship Trooper rifles are really Ruger AC556K

Anonymous

Sure, sounds like it could be cool.

Anonymous

Yes, especially if there are any involving Firefly!

Anonymous

#PROPGUNSMATTER

Anonymous

I think it would be cool. Especially an up close on how they were made. Movie magic is always interesting.

msuboot

Sounds great. Maybe with some remarks on how weird or realistic it seems? Or if it has some real world base model like Han Solo's blaster?

Mr. Frøbel

I would love to see those, especially if they are built from real guns.

Anonymous

Only if you present them like they are real weapons. "And here you see the phased plasma rifle with 40-watt range. This was a popular energy weapon in the machine wars"

Anonymous

Sounds cool. I'd say it's worth a try.

Anonymous

Do it!

Anonymous

Would watch.

Anonymous

I'd definitely watch!

Anonymous

I think it sounds cool. Go for it!

Anonymous

Definitely if they're built from or based on real firearms (like many star wars blasters). Even if not it could be interesting.

Anonymous

I would watch it, especially if they are based on real guns.

Philip Kahn-Pauli

Concur...bring on the Pulse Rifles and Blasters.

Lurker45

If you can find something interesting to say about them; like if the prop was built from a real gun (Han Solo's blaster from a C96, for example), or if the design is based on a real gun, or even how it appears to work (or doesn't) when looked at with a knowledgeable eye.

Anonymous

Sounds interesting

Anonymous

many prop guns have rare real guns as their actions, do it.

A premium hog

Definitely film something on them and save them for April Fools Day videos or an anniversary of when the movie came out

Anonymous

If there is some inspiration from or a modification to a real gun I think that would be interesting. If its just some fantasy gun not based on any reality, not so much.

Anonymous

Yes! Yes! A million times yes!

Chewie

I always enjoy your videos even if I'm not necessarily interested in the gun itself because they're always so well researched and informative - I say go for it!

Anonymous

may be for an alternate channel or inrange?

Anonymous

Definitely get into the guts of some oddball movie guns.

Anonymous

Definitely go for it Ian

Anonymous

Hmmm...YES :)

Kiono Hiemalis

If you manage to explain how they "work" it sure would be interesting! From something like the blaster in Bladerunner to the huge rifles from Starship Troopers, I sure would love to see that! By work I mean both the actual blank-firing gun and the fictional gun.

Anonymous

Yes please

Anonymous

Do it. Would love to see the ZF-1 from The Fifth Element!

Anonymous

Real guns

Anonymous

i'd find that subject very interesting, especially in cases where the prop guns were made out of parts of real guns or if they rely on practical effects instead of CGI to look like they're firing.

Matthew Jackson

Interested - especially if the ergonomics, mechanics, etc offer real life lessons. Either what to do or what not to do.

Anonymous

I think it would be pretty cool, especially for when there are parts taken from existing guns (both physically and aesthetically) also would be interesting to see your thoughts on the goofy factor (ala the craft made Chinese pistols youve done)

Anonymous

M41A PULSE RIFLE PLEASE

Anonymous

Definitely interested

Anonymous

The influence of movies and other forms of media have absolutely had an impact on the firearms community. A strong part of certain narratives and characters in movies and shows is often the firearms they have. Dirty Harry would not be the same if he was walking around with a model 19 or a colt detective. I believe it would be a wonderful opportunity for you. Not only to examine the firearm but engage on the impact the character and their firearm had on our real world, especially the firearms community.

Verdha

Honestly I’d love to see a video on the Star Wars guns in the original trilogy

Anonymous

Yes do the videos

Anonymous

Seems I'm late to the party, but still yes.

Anonymous

It would be interesting to see what makes a prop gun a prop gun - how much simulates reality and how much is fake. Also, if you can show how they fit 1000 rounds into a 20 round magazine, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Anonymous

Your reviews of historical guns are superb, but it would be fun for you to review the occasional fictional gun! Go for it!

Anonymous

Sound interesting and I would definitely watch it

Anonymous

Absolutely! Prop guns have helped influence the industry and what the public wants.

james k

It be interesting to see how they got some of the props to work and what they were made of. I say sure make it a cool mini series like the guns of South Africa or berthier carbine.

Anonymous

I vote yes! I'd be happy to see videos on them, maybe a bit of the contextual creation of it by the propmasters and what they put into them.

Anonymous

Definitely include them!

Anonymous

Personally I would find this very interesting.

Anonymous

I think it would be cool to cover if they used parts of real weapons for the prop (e.g Han Solo's blaster being based off a C96).

Chad Falatic

If this content is going to be a part of the channel, it should be heavily seperated and noted that it's not historical.

Chad Falatic

My suggestion would be an alternate channel.

Anonymous

As long as they're from Forgotten Movies :) but in all seriousness, yes, I think this could be interesting. Especially a movie where they made it impossible to work from an engineering standpoint, or took creative license (like a hammer and/or safety on a Glock).

Frizzen

I agree, if the videos include the origins/inspirations for the guns, I think they would be very interesting. Something along the lines of some of the old Star Wars prop guns, or prop guns where they couldn’t get the ‘real deal’ rare gun so they modified an existing platform to look like a rarer gun.

Anonymous

I'm cool with it, especially if they're built off real guns. Go get that M41 Pulse Rifle again.

Anonymous

My vote is only do the prop guns if they are based/made from a real gun. Otherwise stick with real guns.

Anonymous

Yes, especially ones made from real guns, but any deep look is interesting. One assumes you wouldn't have asked if YOU hadn't found them interesting, and you have good taste.

Anonymous

Meh, I'd watch and probably find it interesting, but more because I trust you to put out good content than from an actual interest in them on my part.

Anonymous

I would watch. Seems like you could comment on the fictional operating system, whether it takes inspiration from real forgotten weapons, etc.

Anonymous

Always cover prop guns!

Anonymous

Adam Savage plus Forgotten Weapons would be a dream combo.

Anonymous

Go for it! Maybe put something common in the video titles or thumbnails so people only interested in your usual content can skip them.

Anonymous

I'll watch nearly anything, but stick to real guns. PLEASE! Geoff Who gets more than enough science fiction on the 6 PM News.

Anonymous

Heck yeah. I'd watch it for sure.

Anonymous

I know you'll be selective and only do the coolest ones.. so giver!!

Anonymous

Yeah, the crowd have spoken. Try to get your hands on that gun from The Mexican movie. The gun with a hart shaped cylinder.

Anonymous

Yes, the crossover into and extrapolation by prop guns is always interesting.

Anonymous

Movie guns are still interesting! Let's go for it!

Anonymous

Only if biased on real weapons

Anonymous

As long as they're functional prop guns, why not? It would be cool to see something like the pulse rifle from Aliens and how it actually works.

Anonymous

I guess it’s to late to say no but please, this could only be interesting once.

Anonymous

I look forward to seeing these, Ian!

Anonymous

Ya that would be cool!

Anonymous

It's not something I'm particularly interested in because with props there's no tie-in with anything historically significant or evolutionary

Anonymous

I would be interested in seeing videos on these. Especially if they are a modification of a "real" gun.

Anonymous

I think it would be great!

Anonymous

As long as it isn't just a simple washer under the flash suppressor. I would be interested in the mechanics of the blank firing prop guns.

Anonymous

I'm for it. I know prop guns won't become the main focus of the channel, so if you can get your hands on some cool ones then do it.

Anonymous

I honestly think you could do reviews on cook books and make it interesting and worth watching. Have at it.

Anonymous

yezzzz

Anonymous

YES. Movie guns inspire.

Anonymous

It would be nice to see those!

Anonymous

Please include them in your videos.

Anonymous

Personally I think that can still be pretty fascinating seeing how the props are made and prepared, I think it’s a cool idea.

Anonymous

I would say yes, yes and yes.

Anonymous

Yes. Especially if they are converted from real guns. It would be fascinating to see that.

Anonymous

Sure. Not a steady diet, of course, but as an occasional sidelight.

Anonymous

yes, I'd like to see them

Andrew Cook

Yes especially if they are fireing props

Rick Notkin

I would prefer prop guns that were made from modified real firearms and, if possible, how those modifications were done.

Mark D Booth

Yes interesting to see them.

Anonymous

Sounds like a fun concept to me.

Anonymous

I’d watch them

Anonymous

Given that the military is looking at a "third arm" to support weapons, it would be very neat if you could look at the MG42+steadicam rig from Aliens. A neat instance of life imitating fiction

Anonymous

Personally I'm interested in them but largely because I'm also interested in prop making. If they're made from real firearms (functional or not in the prop guise) I think it would be interesting to a wider audience.

Anonymous

Yes, absolutely, but I would love for you to do some in the same format you do now, like a far future forgotten weapons, where you discuss the aliens pulse rifle for example and talk about how obsolete it is now with the combi rifles from the aliens predator books that have pulse, plasma, and nano shot all in the same gun that gives the colonial Marines enough firepower to take on hordes of weaponized xenomorphs.

Anonymous

Absolutely! Esp how they converted real guns for the movie...

Anonymous

Would be great for diversity and just some fun. Especially if they're based on real guns :)

Anonymous

Yay!!!

Anonymous

Yes please, prop guns are part of the story. I'm sure you'll keep it proportionate.

Patio Yeller

I'm very much into this idea.

Anonymous

That would be great of those inspired from real guns :)

Hamokk

It would be interesting to see Ian's take on Han Solos blaster.

Anonymous

Any chance you'll be doing a video on the BlasTech DL-44?

Malik Lucas

I'd be interesded in prop gun built from real guns

Anonymous

That sounds like a good idea.

Anonymous

Absolutely! One of my other hobbies is re-creating prop weapons from movies, so that would be great.

Anonymous

Absolutely, Sensei! I have no preferences at all, I'll take what you got!

Anonymous

Most certainly. The original Star Wars blasters were mockups from real guns. They do have a historical aspect to me. You do great work Ian and I enjoy the technical insight on your subjects

Anonymous

I think you should, it will be interesting to see what an actual gun expert thinks of Hollywood's take on firearms.

Anonymous

Aliens has a good set of prop guns that would be interesting. You could also have some fun with Firefly. Might be interesting to do a general video on how guns are handled on a set with regards to real vs. blank firing vs. rubber/prop (and how they shall not be mixed up...).

Anonymous

Heck yeah, sounds good. I'd watch videos of you discussing toilets, for that matter. Gun Jesus ftw

Anonymous

Only if they are based on or modified versions of real guns.

Anonymous

It would be neat to see where some prop guns got their real world start before becoming moviefied.

Anonymous

I vote yes. I would be interested in videos on prop guns, especially those that are made form pieces and parts of real guns. Do it!

Anonymous

I'd love this especially if they are based on real weapons

Tobasco da Gama

This is true of quite a few (though hardly all) prop guns, and I think it'll be really interesting to see which parts are "real" and which aren't!

Anonymous

It doesn't really fit your channel but it would certainly be interesting.

Anonymous

Let's keep it 'real'...

Christian Hanes

Movie guns are cool, I say do it.

Anonymous

I would like to see prop guns if they have some relation to real guns. Like how Star-Wars guns are mostly modified guns from WWII it would be nice to see the real gun they started with and what they changed. But if it is purely fictional and nonsensical I don't think it really has a reason to be on your channel.

Anonymous

It does sound interesting. Wonder if you’ll be able to offer insight from the designer or builder as to why they chose the design and “capabilities” and if they hacked up...er, modified any real forgotten weapons for the props.

Anonymous

I vote yes, especially since I'd love to see ones adapted from real guns and what went into making them.

Anonymous

Isn’t the cartridge firing LeMat from Westworld effectively a prop gun? You did an episode on that so there is precedent for this already. My request ... the gas jet firing Sandman gun from LOGANS RUN (if you can find it)

Anonymous

WHAT FOR?? There's enough real guns you haven't covered yet without dipping into Hollywood fantasy.

Anonymous

Yes for ians sake YES

Anonymous

Yes Please!

Anonymous

From most people I would have little interest in such content, but given your breadth of experience and depth of understanding I think it could actually be really cool coming from you. After all, many props are engineered, too! The catch would be, not if it noticeably impacts the production of Forgotten Real Weapons content.

Anonymous

Sounds cool for a few videos, 7 or so of the best

Anonymous

I think it would be great to check out the prop guns.

Anonymous

It would be cool.

Landric Hakon

I would enjoy videos on prop guns, go for it.

Anonymous

Prop guns would be awesome. I'd love to see the history about the base guns that were made to be the props and also the "lore" what the movie universe says about the history of the gun

Anonymous

Yes, I would watch.

Anonymous

Id enjoy it and could bring some new fans to the channel

Anonymous

Do it!

Anonymous

Why not? Get on with it.

Anonymous

I am not sure if it is relevant. Tested does a lot of this and sometimes it is quite interesting but not really from a weapons perspective. I must confess that one of the reasons I use a Margolin .22 as copetition gun is that it was the basis for the one used by Leia in episode IV.....

Anonymous

I first thought was no, but after thinking about it more these movie guns have a cultural impact to the gun community and in a way have their own historical significance.

Anonymous

Go for it!

Gavin Rea-Davies

yes, would be nice to see where some of them descend from, or maybe where some of the crazier ideas have actually occurred in real life.

Anonymous

Yes, absolutely.

Anonymous

I'd definitely be interested if you do your usual review style, giving us a bit of history and context, then going into the construction and modifications. Please do.

Anonymous

Prop guns are EXTREMELY interesting, especially when they start with real world guns (even if they're fakes) and cobble them into something completely different.(Mal's gun from firefly, Han's Blaster, Blade Runner) Another favorite aspect of hollywood prop guns; is guns that look like other guns and get used because hollywood can get a good supply of them. (MASH TV show for example, primarily used Star Model B pistols instead of real 1911)

Benjamin Helton

Do it now! What are you waiting for?

Anonymous

Do it, fits the channel.

ViciousWarGoose

Yes, fictional weapons often based on real weapons.

Anonymous

I think it would be great. But they'll also probably be better as short 3-5 minute videos. I doubt I'd care to watch a 20 minutes long video about a fictional gun.

Anonymous

Do it, say you have Decker's gun from blade runner... That said I have a friend who is into props, and it is fascinating how prop maker slap bits and pieces together. Some do it for looks, while other speculates what would happen in the future.

Anonymous

Yes, do it.

Vlad Marinkovic

I'm interested in non-functional movie prop guns only to the extent to which they are relevant to real functional guns. For example, how some prop guns were influenced by and derived from real guns and vice-versa. I would be much more interested in pointing out realistic use of firearms in movies, i.e. listing of movies that an average person can learn something about firearms from. I don't care about fictional guns that have no basis in reality and are depicted in such a manner as to defy rules of logic and physics (such as "laser" guns that recoil when "fired").

Anonymous

Yes, some of those props have interesting stories.

Anonymous

I signed on to say, not really, but they sold me. Sure. (Great channel, thanks)

Anonymous

Yes, I think it would be interesting to hear your analysis of their orgins as it relates to real guns they resemble. (ie Han Solo’s blaster and the Mauser C96 it was based on)

Anonymous

It sounds great

Anonymous

I'm up for it!

Anonymous

You could always run them as a special (multi-part?) segment

Fish

Sure, I love all your content and the great lengths you go to to gather as much info as you can! Would be very interesting and I hope to see it :>

Anonymous

I'm not at all interested, but I'm not going to withhold my Patreon donations over this. There was so much great content recently that surely a few items of personal interest (and of interest to others!) will be welcome.

Anonymous

That would be great. Love to see some of them!

Anonymous

Yes please.

Anonymous

Most definitely, most were based or inspired by real firearms anyway.

Anonymous

I'd say yes, but with a focus on how they relate to real firearms. For example, the ways in which real firearms have influenced movie prop design or how movies have influence real world firearms design (such as in aesthetics), or how movies have shaped perceptions of real world firearms. One specific example that springs to mind is the Rebel blasters seen in the opening scene of the first Star Wars film. The actual props were built using British sterling submachine guns, however the prop makers added a cowling over the barrel which was inspired by the hand guard/cocking handle on the BSA prototype submachine gun from 1949. Subsequently, variations of this design feature have continued to appear in Star Wars films and video games ever since (including the most recent ones). To me, this is a nifty example of how a legitimate "forgotten weapon" influenced movie design, and how an informed background in firearms history can be useful to prop makers, even when the subject is purely fictional.

Anonymous

Yes for sure!

B. Fish

Absolutely. I think the best thing about forgotten weapons is diversity. You could put out a video about an obscure WWI bolt action one week and a Vietnam era trials machine gun the next. Prop guns very much fit in with this and I think hearing you talk about design elements of fictional guns would be very interesting.

Anonymous

sounds like fun

Anonymous

Absolutely! It would be interesting to hear your take on the weapons, their real life counterparts and ideology, but on one condition! You do an entire series to the aliens movie!!

Anonymous

Instant reaction was hell no, but you know what after a few moments i got to thinking why not? It might be cool...

Anonymous

I'd like it so long as it doesn't impact the amount of content on real historical firearms, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the "practicality" of fictional weapons, some of them must be pretty interesting inside as well

Anonymous

I'll be the odd man out... I prefer you sticking to the real McCoy =)

Anonymous

I think this would be pretty interesting, especially for those that are just dressed up versions of real weapons. Stuff like Malcolm Reynolds revolver from Firefly or the Pulse Rifle from Aliens are really interesting because of how they modified an existing weapon to create live firing props.

Anonymous

sounds cool!

Anonymous

Keep up the great work Ian, if you’re producing it and it’s educational, we’ll all enjoy it

Anonymous

I would prefer that you stick with real guns. Hollywood Weapons does a pretty good job of showing the movie prop guns and devices, so I am much more interested in the development of real weapons and how that development influenced history. I will still watch, and still support Forgotten Weapons, regardless.

Anonymous

The movies build alot of drive with some models, would be fun to see your take on that 😁

Anonymous

My vote is for "real" guns. Thanks.

Anonymous

I vote yes

Anonymous

I think you should do them. Hell, not only do them, but go through what it's supposed to be and do, and since many of these are based on real firearms, go through what was used to make them.

Beccaskye

Collabarate with the guys from MythBusters.

Anonymous

While I liked your take on the LeMat from Westworld, I like that your channel primarily sticks to real guns over fantasy.

Anonymous

I say do it, I'd like to see your take on them

Anonymous

Yes. I would like to see Han Solo's blaster and Mal's pistol from Firefly.

Anonymous

Should be fun. Go for it.

Anonymous

Please do some content like this. A lot of us firearm enthusiasts are also movie fans. It could be cool to get the design history as well as learning what the real life gun its based on is.

Anonymous

Personally I'd love to see your take on the design and inspiration of movie guns and weapons. Sure there are other channels on youtube who cover such topics as other patrons have mentioned, but they're not Gun Jesus. For those who don't want to see them, it's as simple as not watching the videos. The naysayers lose nothing, and the supporters gain everything.

Anonymous

fuck yeah!

Anonymous

a significant portion of the populations whole firearm experience is prop guns. Would be interesting to see how the modify or make props for film and tv.

Chris Trott

Absolutely do them. Some of the prop guns are more interesting than real ones because of how they were made and what they were made out of (i.e. the various Alien/Aliens weapons, the Blade Runner blaster, etc).

Anonymous

Scaramanga’s 4.2mm (looked a lot bigger!) Golden Gun. Great movie prop. 👍

Risto Alanko

Many of the followers of this channel are keenly following movies to catch too exotic or "out of place or era" guns. I'd love to see some prop guns up close, but not the rubber pieces...

Anonymous

That would great, Ian, go for it!

Anonymous

That would be very cool!

Anonymous

Would be a fantastic idea.

Jago Dakari

It'll be cool to know what weapons have been used. Especially the mini 14, known as The Jamless Wonder, which never jams when using Hollywood style blanks.

Anonymous

I'm interested because many of them are actual firearms. It would be interesting to see what the real gun is hiding within prop guns.

Anonymous

I am a patron because I believe that your knowledge is an important thing to get recorded. The more the better.

Anonymous

Are you doing a collaboration with Adam Savage (ex-mythbuster) ? He regularly talks about prop guns on his channel "Tested". As for your question, I am absolutely interested in some movie prop guns. Mixing in some firearms related things once in a while that are not strickly firearms keeps the monotony away (even if your content is so varied already, it is not really monotonous . I really liked when you dwelved into some fireworks launching devices (French fireworks flintlock hand mortars) and flare pistols. Very few persons dwelve into These type of devices mechanism like you do for firearms and it would be very refreshing.

Anonymous

Make sure you show the bore constrictors used to raise gas pressure to cycle semi and full auto weapons without having a ugly device stuck on the barrel. The series Combat had several, usually a constrictor to reduce the bore diameter near the muzzle. They made a unique sound.

Anonymous

Calling the segment "Forgotten props" might be more appropriate... But yeah I will welcome it... as long as doesn't take over the regular content.

Anonymous

I think some prop gun content would be cool. Especially if you go into some detail on the design it is based on and how the changes to prop gun do or don’t make sense. And if the guns do fire blanks or operate in some way it would be neat to see those modifications in detail as well.

Anonymous

I know, that I am already late... But I love to see the props, as those prop guns have often influenced public opinion, and in some cases even influenced real weapon developement...

Anonymous

Yes please. I think it would be great if you could include the “development history” of the prop guns too (Aliens pulse rifle for example). I think we would find it awesome and entertaining.

Anonymous

Oh, hell yeah!

Anonymous

yes, great idea. In one scene from the movie Rambo, the FLATTENED flash hider? can be seen on an AK.

Anonymous

Sure why not?Sounds great.

Anonymous

I would say that making it clear that they are not historical will be very important. Bad info spreads like wildfire and forgotten weapons has been a breath of fresh air in this regard

Anonymous

Another yes vote. So what if they are not real, if they have interesting stories, they will make for interesting videos. And it's always nice to learn new stuff. I also think a slight name change for these videos would be apporpriate.

Anonymous

I would love to hear about prop guns, especially if they're built on real firearms.

Anonymous

"Aliens" rifles would be an excellent first shot at this :)

Anonymous

as long as you have a good operational theory behind them...

Anonymous

It might get new, different viewers to watch the video and then hopefully get hooked on the channel like I have been! Can’t hurt 😊

Anonymous

Love to see them. Fake guns with orange tips might be the only thing we can play with in the future if certain groups are allowed to override common sense.

Anonymous

+1 for ForgottenProps spinoff

Anonymous

Yes, props are interesting. Have fun with it!

Anonymous

Sounds awesome!

Anonymous

If you have found prop guns that are interesting enough that you want to do them. I would want to see them.

Anonymous

I would love to see how accurate the prop guns are

Anonymous

I'm in favor and it would be nice if we see you shooting some of the movie props!

Anonymous

I want to see the "Predator" mini gun Jesse Ventura ran without a 20# battery or the 200# ammo handling gear, not to mention 250# of ammo just to run the gun for 45 seconds.

Anonymous

I would really enjoy this.

Siyu

Would be especially interesting to see how much "Mash up" there is under those props, going over exactly what everything was made from to make up the prop.

TankCatapult

Honestly, I think both would be cool.

Anonymous

Check out Hollywood Weapons on Netflix, they did a whole episode on that gun

Anonymous

Sounds cool, as long as they are firing or blank firing and built from real weapons, like the pulse rifle. The cheesy looking all resin stuff isn't as interesting to me.

Anonymous

Even if you have sufficient replies I wanna leave my two cents. If they are just boring rubber/plastic props, then why include them? They are basically just toys then. However, if they are props based off of one (or several) real guns, then it makes sense to look at them closely and geek out over the mechanics. The original Han Solo Blaster/Mauser c96 would be the Holy Grail of such props, I think.

Almeida

If they based off of someting that would be cool

Andreas Nohl

Like that pulls rifle from Alien you shoed (sadly) very short?

Anonymous

Cool is cool. I'd love to see what they are.

Anonymous

Definitely. Especially since I'm sure you'll root it in the weapons they're based on or the difference between them

Anonymous

I'm mainly interested in the mechanics of the firearms. So if a prop gun is mechanically interesting I'd be interested, but if it's completely non-functional I don't think I'd be interested all that much.

Kenneth Marshall

Fictional guns are interesting and while they exist would be worth noting what they were made from. Some like one the original bladerunner pistols with the revolver inside to shoot blanks is intersting on how its made, why it was made, ehat inspired it.

Anonymous

Yes, I think if you find them interesting, we would as well

Anonymous

Sure could be interesting

Anonymous

Honestly you could do a video on a Nerf gun and I'd watch it.

Anonymous

I say do it. "Feasability" would be an interesting thing to review on prop guns.

Joshua Kerner

I'd be interested for sure.

Anonymous

I like the way you think. Heck yeah!

Anonymous

Don't forget to examine "Could this actually work in real life?" and "Would it actually be a good idea in real life?"

Anonymous

Sure, sounds like fun!

Anonymous

I enjoyed the video on the LeMat from WestWorld, but I think I would enjoy them most if they are few and far between.

Anonymous

So long its an interesting gun, it shouldnt matter if its real or not.

Anonymous

Also, as many of us noticed the newer modern redo of the 70s classic "Battlestar Galactica" used off the shelf "HiPoint" Pistols and Carbines as their small arms prop guns, just put barrel restrictors in them and loaded them with blanks. However, they did do a unique "shell launcher" (Grenade Launcher) that mounted to the bottom of the handguns forward of the trigger on the low end rail where a light or lazer normally mounts. On the show it appeared to be fairly functional and a smaller version of the 40mm grenade launcher used on the M-4. It would be nice if you could get your hands on one of them - lower forward rail mounted grenade launcher on a handgun is rather unusual to say the least !!!

Anonymous

Yeah, I'm a sucker, and would watch it in a heart beat. Sometimes a little lighter hearted videos from you can be just what I need after a long day. Though I am a little bummed that we getting teased and then need to wait until december. That like Hollywood teaser tailer wait time.

Anonymous

Saw your edit due to the overwhelming positive comments, can't wait to see whatever you cover!

Anonymous

Ugh. Really? I DGAF about how fake shit that doesn't work doesn't work. I like learning about how real shit works.

Anonymous

Sure, bring it on

Chris Hamlin

Sounds good to me, as long as there is something mechanically interesting about them and they aren't just foam models.

Anonymous

Do it! I'd enjoy seeing the props, how they were made, what they might have been made from and what ever else you can tell us about them.

Anonymous

Please do Ian! I love prop guns. I am awaiting the details on the pulse rifle and smart gun from Aliens!!!

Anonymous

With the number of videos you have made about different Mauser (style) bolt action rifles you could do prop guns within your existing format.

Anonymous

One thing that might tie things together nicely might be talking about the real guns that were the basis for some of these props (i.e Star Wars blasters)

Anonymous

There are lots of real and fantasy prop guns that would be interesting to learn about, plus any information that you can offer on how prop guns are modified to maintain their function or work as a movie prop.

Anonymous

I'm very interested in the Joseph Heller's LePage (Anti-Aircraft) Glue Gun described in "Catch-22":

Anonymous

Yossarian sidled up drunkenly to Colonel Korn at the officers' club one night to kid with him about the new Lepage gun that the Germans had moved in. 'What Lepage gun?' Colonle Korn inquired with curiousity. 'The new three-hundred-and-forty-four-millimeter Lepage glue gun,' Yossarian answered. 'It glues a whole formation of planes together in mid-air.' Colonel Korn jerked his elbow free from Yossarian's clutching fingers in startled affront. 'Let go of me, you idiot!' he cried out furiously, glaring with vindictive approval as Nately leaped upon Yossarian's back and pulled him away.

Anonymous

I think that would be a nice change of pace.

Anonymous

The more videos from you the better! I'd definitely watch them!

Matthew Zagone

Hell yes! Hoping to see some E-11s and a DL-44! Maybe a BFG, too... 😜

Anonymous

Hi Ian,

Pokeroots

I'm interested

Anonymous

Definitely a good idea to throw at us from time to time. If possible, please work in how these fictional guns are often “out of time and place “ for the story.

Anonymous

I enjoy seeing the prop weapons. Weapon designs, are cool, no matter if fantasy or reality.

Will Sanders

If you'll do the same analysis that Skallagrim does for his fantasy weapon critiques, it would be interesting to see how prop/fictional weapons hold up in the eyes of those with a great deal of combat oriented gun handling experience.

Anonymous

guns, real or imagined, any time!

Anonymous

I would happily watch a video talking about prop guns in any capacity.

Anonymous

I would have to say no. Don't personally have much interest in just looking at something that doesn't do anything

Anonymous

Yea for sure sounds rad

Anonymous

No, stay focused. I have no intrest inmovies at all.

Anonymous

I'd like to see what one or two such videos would have to offer.

Sen Kanashimi

I'd be interested in seeing the underlying weapon and what it was based on, what they did to make it more iconic as a prop gun from a real firearm

Anonymous

I think that it would be a good idea in that people become used to what the movies shows and take for granted that what is shown is real. With the advent of the "fake" everything era, identifying some truthinesses might be fun. But, a few episodes should be the test of the viability of the project, non?

Anonymous

Absolutely!

Anonymous

Only if there is interesting engineering and craftsmanship.

Anonymous

I'm all in favor, as long as they have some plausible concepts.

Anonymous

Sounds like fun, throw them in :)

Dave Shuford

Sounds good so long as they approach reasonable.

Anonymous

Only if the weapon has been forgotten!

Anonymous

Only if they are actual weapons... not fictional.

Anonymous

I'd love to see them.

Anonymous

Please, only working weapons. Props are not weapons.

Anonymous

Do what you do gun jesus. They way you present your videos is educational and enjoyable no matter the content. Thanks for being in our gun community!!

Anonymous

I agree with interesting "real shooting" guns-made-into-props ethos. Like the rifles from Aliens or Starship Troopers . . .

Anonymous

Prop firearms are interesting. I remember accidents through the years that changed the entertainment industry's use of prop firearms. Stories about prop uses and safety would be interesting. Also, the movie Sgt. York had Gary Cooper (Sgt. York) shooting the charging German soldiers with a P08 Luger pistol. I was told years ago this prop was made up because the studio's gunsmiths couldn't make a 1911 .45 Colt pistol shoot blanks automatically so, they used the Luger in place of the Colt. I did experiment with a Colt .45 Automatic pistol in the 1970's and yes, I was able to shoot blanks with it. I didn't understand their problem with the Colt .45 Automatic and still don't. Yes, prop guns and their underlying stories would be very interesting.

Anonymous

I want to see them. Prop guns are always interesting.

Anonymous

Sounds interesting but, please, don't let them become *too* frequent.

Anonymous

I want to se them. Prop guns can be interesting.

Anonymous

It might be cool if you can comment on the fictional guns, on how practical or possible something like that would be

Anonymous

Yes, please.

Anonymous

Yeah that could be cool. Especially like prop guns built from real firearms.

Anonymous

Yes I would be interested. Very cool!

Paul Beck

No thank you.

Anonymous

Absolutely. Prop guns are more often than not just dressed up real guns. This sounds like fun!

Paul Beck

If I want to see movie props and how to their made I can watch Adam Savage, please stick with real weapons.

Anonymous

Sounds intresting Ian.... bring it on!

horrovac

It depends strongly on what type of weapons they are. If it's Zorg Industries ZF-1 from the fifth element, or these spray-and-pray things from starship troopers, forget it. Especially ZF-1 was not meant to be taken seriously but rather as a bit of over-the-top fun ("repeat button"), you'd be spewing nonsense and feeling quite silly, I guarantee. If however it's about the guns from the Star Wars universe (which are essentially german guns like broomhandle Mauser, MG-42, Sturmgewehr), or Blade runner's gun (receiver from a Steyr bolt-action rifle on a revolver handle with a fake barrel), there might be a bit of stuff to talk about, however I don't quite see how that would fit your style. But on the other hand I think you might pull it off. Just make sure to wear a stormtrooper helmet when reviewing Solo's blaster. :)

Anonymous

No thanks, Ian. Let's keep it real. The main reason I enjoy your channel is for the glimpses into history it provides. Movie props don't interest me in the slightest. I can't even remember the last movie I went to or the last TV show I watched, having lost interest in them decades ago.

Garret Rain

Guess it would depend on the prop gun; prefer the historical content on the channel, like the back story behind the production or failure to produce. If the prop guns had the back story, then there may be more interest. For another non-standard video topic, I would be interested to hear how you make your videos. You put out a lot of contents so there should be an efficient streamlined over time process you have worked out. What equipment and software do you use? Do you do the work yourself or do you have a partner that does the video work? What tricks have you learned to crank out consistent and effective content? Thank you. Garret.

Anonymous

I think it would be interesting especially if the props were made using actual firearm parts.

Garret Rain

Also, sometime would love to hear, "How did I get here story?" Love to hear an overview of how your life path took you to find and fulfill your life's purpose and passion.

Anonymous

I’d like to see it

Anonymous

I’d love to see videos about fictional guns. They are often a product of their times. Like how classic sci-fi was all about the lasers, then there was a reaction against that with Alien and Outland, then everyone had an OICW rip-off, now evey move gun is a SCAR or AR for that “gritty, get-them-CoD-dollars” feeling.

Anonymous

I'd also find that interesting. If you can, I'll watch!

Purple 8

Dooo eeeet

Anonymous

Would be an interesting shift.

Anonymous

Prop guns would be fine.

Anonymous

sure its something you don't see everyday and it sounds interesting

Anonymous

It would be neat to see

Anonymous

Hell yes

Anonymous

Go for it. I need a diversion every now and then.

Anonymous

Add one more yes to the tally.

Anonymous

Is there anyone that does not want a video about That Gun from Blade Runner or the Mare's Leg? I think not, bring it on.

Anonymous

If you cann link the prop back to an original firearm from which it is derived, yeah, that might be OK,

Anonymous

Hell yes.

Anonymous

I give that a big 👍 as well!

Anonymous

I think it will be great!!

Anonymous

If you want a simple answer: yes. Some movie guns just suck, and it would be interesting to hear you roast them. Other’s are awesome, but gun tech just has not caught up yet. I am crushing on Anton Chigurh’s 1187 suppressed shotgun. I would like to hear your opinion of it. As a bonus, it would be cool to do a real-life adaptation of the gun and see why it just don’t work. You touched on it a little with the M-134 mini. Just in case you forgot… <a href="https://youtu.be/PKJiwcGvaqI?t=72" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/PKJiwcGvaqI?t=72</a>

Anonymous

Yes, please. You could make a video about a rubber band gun and i'd still watch it.

Anonymous

I would find that most interesting. Especially if you manage to get the background story of why it turned out like it did.

Anonymous

Make sure you include the guns from Aliens for Karl.

Anonymous

Big Big Yes

Momi

Big yes from me too!

Anonymous

I would say yes, but not too many, I think that prop guns would especially make great videos if they're mechanically interesting, or made our of real guns, like Han solo's blaster bieng made out of a c96. I'm sure you wouldn't pick prop guns that weren't interesting to you however, and I'm sure they will be interesting to us

Anonymous

Yes, but not too many at one time - perhaps one or two a month. And, if they are derivatives of real guns, to provide some information on the original firearm along with the story on how it was selected, adapted, etc... Most of the prop guns I've seen are rubber dummies, so if that's what you'll have, it'd be nice to link it back to the real firearm that inspired the art.

Anonymous

I like idea of fictional guns. Would be cool to see what a lot began as.

Anonymous

It seems it's already been decided, but I'll add my two cents anyways: It'd be super cool as a small side project/miniseries, like your gun terminology videos or your recent Forgotten History stuff, I'd just like to make sure that it remains clear that this would just be an offshoot and not normal content. Additionally, focus on props with actual functional bits (not necessarily as a firearm, but rather just functional components of some manner rather than just being an inert object simply meant to look like something/imply function) would be appreciated, although if this is not possible/too limiting that's understandable.

Anonymous

Here's a thing .. The pistol in the original novel of Logan's Run can fire a variety of different cartridges. This was shortly after ripped off in a British comic (200O AD) to become the Lawgiver, the sidearm of the Judges in Judge Dredd. So really covering the Sandman flame pistol should maybe include the weapons in both Dredd films as well..

Anonymous

Late to comment, but something that might fall in a similar format to the way you compare weapon models to each other is some of the lengths pre-CGI film had to take to portray guns on film. One example is how some guns have to stand-in for a more iconic gun -- such as the fake P90 in the Spawn movie. Less obvious would be the modified civilian MP5s used in things like Die Hard. Other things could be the 9mm blank conversions standing in for .45; flash paper guns and the things that I think are basically propane blow torches to stand in for machine guns.
