I would like to have a Q&A posted this month, but I am running a bit short on time for research and filming before I leave on a filming trip. So this month's Q&A will be a Lightning Edition, using questions with short answers only. So, what would you like to know that can be answered in a single sentence?

(I have not done this format before; hopefully it will work well!)

I’m not sure if you’re still looking for questions but I had one about the Rhodesian designed Southbound african produced Mamba pistols. I’ve heard they have a dangerously light trigger pull, and aren’t mechanically great for shooting, do you know if this is true? Do you have any interesting knowledge on them?

Hey Ian... few questions posted below hopefully you can use one or two: First older firearm you purchased for yourself? What made you interested in French rifles vs other nations? Any plans to come to the NYC area also for the 100th anniversary or Armistice Day? For those of us going to Paris this year, any recommendations For museums, existed, etc...?

Anonymous

Why in your opinion the 10mm cartridge, despite being a good round ballistically and dimension wise, was not explored further? Was it due to the FBI trials which resulted in the .40S&W or is there any other reason such great round would not see further use in firearms design?

I have two questions that I hope are quick to answer. Answer as many or as few as you deem you can. 1) Regarding stripper clips for bolt actions. After loading some stripper clips can be "ejected" when the bolt is closed while others have to be manually removed. Why is this? Is it something to do with the design of the bolt and stripper clip guide? 2) Why is Japanese Ammunition considered underpowered when compared to its counterparts? Is it the type of powder and powder loading or some other mechanism?

With advances in technology, would a rifle like the g11 be financially viable for major world powers?

Anonymous

This can be answered quickly with a yes or no, but would also make for an interesting discussion when you have time to delve into it: Are the Colt Canada/Diamaco C7 and C8 platforms as better than the equivalent M16/M4 platforms that their widespread international adoption with Regular and SF forces would suggest?

Anonymous

One of the aspects of your show I enjoy the most is watching the evolution of firearms designs during the last 300 years. With that evolution in mind, would you agree that current, 21st century firearms are the best that have ever existed?

Hey, I love my 1895 Nagant... But would not want to take it into combat.

Bruce Brodnax

No one makes BP 22rf of any size any longer. There are threads over on the Cast Boolits forum about rolling your own BP 22 rimfire [altho' for what should be obvious reasons, the focus is on 22lr rather than short...] As an alternative, shoot modern 22 smokeless short; it is spec'd to perform like old BP loads, but without all the corrosiveness. 2nd alternative: fire 22 BB caps [shorter than Short, just a primer behind the ball. Often used for indoor target practice in a living room or hallway... ;-)

Bruce Brodnax

+1 on the Calico. Did they come back to life after the sunset of the Clinton AW ban?

Bruce Brodnax

Given Ian's espoused favor for 9mm, the superior ergonomics and higher mag capacity, I'm thinking he's going to go w/ GP35 here... ;-)

Bruce Brodnax

I'm interested in this too [altho' the 1st I've heard you owned a Gahendra.] Was thinking that a simple chamber adapter to take a BP 45LC load firing Minie's would be the most practical/easiest to implement approach...

Bruce Brodnax

Favorite, as "best" has too much room for argument & divisiveness... ;-)

Bruce Brodnax

The current trend for air-pistol versions of various historical and modern pistol designs?

Bruce Brodnax

It depends: when do you expect disposable firearms ["Rifle by... Gillette!"] to become financially viable?

Bruce Brodnax

This would appear to be more a question of Diemaco supplying the same gun at a lower purchase price than Colt is willing/able to do...

Bruce Brodnax

I think not. Have you seen some of Remington's most recent boondoggles?

Anonymous

Do you think 7.62x51 was in retrospect pretty much pointless. Given the stock pile of .30-06 around the world and in the US as well as the similar ballistics was it worth all the trouble for the small weight/length savings. I'm thinking too that .30-06 would be more considerably more useful than .308 in the current role .308 is used in (DM/sniper rifles and MGs). You agree?

Anonymous

Sorry for the weird one, but: Have you ever reflected on the odd coincidence of long-lived national armories being established in both Tula and Tulle within about 20 years of each other over 300 years ago? The first time I heard you refer to Tulle, I was wondering what the hell Russia was doing making French rifles :)

I've heard stories of how in WWI, before the development of anti-tank rifles, soldiers would use mail-order big-game hunting rifles to defeat armor (tank or non-). Is there any truth to this, and were there other notable instances of civilian arms drafted into service to fill a vacant military niche?

Why is the 7.92x57mm Mauser (or 8mm Mauser as most of us would call it) designated 7.92 when the bullet diameter is 8.22? Certainly the bore can't be as tight as 7.92mm, is it?

Will Sanders

Howdy Ian, You stated that the Colt Monitor was the coolest and best version of the BAR. Knowing you've shot the Monitor, the "M1918A3", and the Polish Wz.-28 on camera and I'm guessing others, such as FN exports, off camera. Why is the Monitor the ultimate BAR variant or am I just misunderstanding you in that it's the coolest which with that massive compensator I can't really argue.

Are you still planning on doing a video of the Alofs shotgun (I guess that’s how it’s spelled?) you showed in one of your Q&A videos from May of ‘16? I tried to find it but either I’m really bad at finding things or you’ve been too busy with all of the other cool stuff you’ve been doing to get to it. Thanks!

With the US experimenting on ships armed Railguns, do you think firearms of the future will follow similar methods of propulsion? If so, how long do you think it will take?

Anonymous

Hey Ian, was there ever a "Standard Issue" shotgun for the US in Vietnam? From what I gather it was just a big hodge podge of several different 12 gauges, anything from 870s to old left over trenchguns. Thanks!

After your ‘Machine gun terminology” video some questions came up, from an academic standpoint does the term “LMG” strictly refer to magazine feed weapons or can firearms such as the belt fed M240 be considered LMGs or are they strictly GPMGs?

Which of the guns in your collection took the longest to find? What’s the next machine gun you want to acquire?

Anonymous

Without putting words in your mouth, I think it's fair to say you believe the Model 1917 (American made British copy of a German rifle) was the best rifle of WWI. The M1 Garand(American rifle) was the best rifle of WWII. The M16(American rifle) is the best modern rifle. The one American rifle that seems to miss the mark is the M14, being Americas attempt at a select fire, full power rifle. So, what in your opinion is the best of breed of that category of rifle, sometimes referred to as Battle Rifles?

Anonymous

What kind of hearing protection do you recommend? As someone who fires all sorts of firearms, what really works well?

Anonymous

If you could meet and converse with any firearms designer throughout all of time, who would it be?

Anonymous

It would be interesting to do a video dedicated to the history of optical sights through history. Most of us have little to no idea of the incredible evolution how we got to aimpoints and eotechs, with vague notions from your videos introducing the singlepoint sight and other precursors.

Anonymous

What is your favourite ammunition ?

GreenRuin

This might be too complex to answer concisely but is pistol accuracy particularly relevant in the military/law enforcement markets? The range and size of targets plus relatively little training compared to civilian target shooters seems like adopting a much cheaper gun that is less accurate could be a valid choice.

Anonymous

In the past you've been afraid of taking apart certain guns at auction houses, telling that the new owner would have to do that himself. Has any of those new owners ever contacted you about it? Perhaps giving you a chance to redo the disassembly part of the video?

Kyle Clark

Easy question: P14 or Type 99 rifle?

wFirbolg

Thanks you for taking the time. Imagining that during the WW2, the Swiss would have been aligned with Allies. Would the Karabiner Model 1931 (K-31) have a shot comparing it to the Karabiner 98k. Cheers.

Anonymous

Can you do something on the history of suppressor designs? I read your piece on the 1909 Maxim and am wondering about the design trade offs (weight/length), heat dissipation, baffle types, accuracy, fouling, materials etc. It seems like an interesting topic to study while waiting for a Form 1 stamp.

bird

I can't talk about 20 years from now but it seems like Bushmaster has already forgotten about the ACR.

bird

Do you see any reason why the magazine forward of grip layout for pistols (e.g. the Mauser C96) would make a comeback? Is there any niche this could possibly fill in the present day?

Anonymous

Okay, sort of long question that can be answered simply. Though I wouldn't mind if you kept the question and answered in more detail later. Disregarding colonial wars or Imperial aggression in which one force had access to firearms and the other side did not (or at least an inadequate supply of firearms and ammunition), which war or engagement would you say was most influenced by one side over the other based mostly, if not entirely, on the superiority of its basic firearm over opposing force? In other words: In your opinion, which battle/war/engagement was was most decidedly won because Army A had Gun X vs. Army B had Gun Y?

Anonymous

OH OH OH OH! Just thought of another one that my friends and I were discussing the other day. Have you ever picked up a firearm and thought, "this gun was made for me." As in, have you ever picked up a firearm that hasn't been customized just for you or modified in any way, and it just felt right in your hands when you shouldered it, the weight and balance, ease of controls, sights, etc. etc. And better yet, did you get to shoot it and it performed as well or better than you expected?

Anonymous

What's one forgotten weapon you've come across for under $5-600 to purchase these days that you think everyone should add to their collection and, in one sentence, why?

Anonymous

With all the time you spend researching, traveling, and making videos for both your channel and InRangeTV, do you ever have time to take your own guns to the range?

Anonymous

What's your opinion of the Ruger No 1? Have you used one? I liked my .45-70.

Anonymous

What type of operating system would be best suited for an integrally suppressed pistol?

Anonymous

Do you take or have to take any measures against violating any ITAR regulations while documenting all of the different types of firearms that you are exposed to in the Forgotten Weapons project?

Anonymous

How much should a Lebel rifle cost ?

CavScout

Ian, where are you at on collecting/interest on the Japanese rifles. Type 38, 38C, 99, Type 1, Type 2, etc? I've noticed a shortage of it on the channel.

ForgottenWeapons

I have a pretty thorough collection of Arisakas; the ones I don't have are the 99 sniper, cast iron receiver last ditch, and then some really obscure stuff like a Love of Country marked rifle. I have been deliberately avoiding doing videos on them in anticipation of doing a contiguous series like I have been slowly doing on French rifles. That series will probably start sometime next year.

Anonymous

Which country's ordnance department introduced the most suitable set of small arms for their national needs during the smokeless powder era to the end of WWII? Was one military consistently ahead of the power curve or did the title change hands over the course of the period?

Anonymous

Hi Ian, What are the factors that decide the Cyclic rate of fire of a machine gun. Can these be tuned without resorting to a complicated rate reducer. I am thinking of things like the MG34 vs MG42, The PPD40&amp;PPSh41 vs PPS43, the ZB26 vs the Bren, and the Browning 50Cal vs Aircraft versions. Keep up the good work, I love your channel, Regards, Liam (from Ireland, home of virtually no guns at all).

Anonymous

Due to the variety of black powder grade/potency how did they test it by the 19th century and would you be interested in doing a video on it? I know Ian is more interested in cartridge era small arms so perhaps this is something a collaboration could be done to cover many methods/tools over several centuries and countries?

Bruce Brodnax

They actually used a calibrated mortar for official testing [think of the carnival "feats of strength" attraction, with the paddle you hit with a hammer to hopefully ring a gong], or for informal batch checking, they have little gadgets like this: <a href="http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=701_709_712&amp;products_id=17354&amp;osCsid=1g46mdpf69p0ap3bo21u4g83n5" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=701_709_712&amp;products_id=17354&amp;osCsid=1g46mdpf69p0ap3bo21u4g83n5</a>

Bruce Brodnax

Given Ian's apparent fondness for the Browning HP, my guess is the CZ75 [product improved/homage to the GP35.]

Bruce Brodnax

For shooting or just appreciation of the technical aspects? If the former, I'd have to say CZ75 or something similar, but if the latter, a Webley-Fosberry or even better, the Mateba would be a winner, for me! ;-)

Bruce Brodnax

#1) Declining sales and too much competition from the Remington model 51. #2) See #1 above. Also, you go to S&amp;W for revolvers, not auto pistols [esp. during that time period...] ;-) #3) The obvious choice is JMB [king of gun designers], but for just that reason, I'm thinking Ian's going to go w/ someone different, probably some French designer most of us have never heard of... ;-D

Bruce Brodnax

The 1/2" cartridge length savings in .308Win vs. .30-'06 translates to 1" savings in action length for the weapon made to shoot it. So, not entirely pointless...

Bruce Brodnax

Heh. Yeah, that drives me nuts too. My old French prof would be making Ian stay after class to work on his pronunciation, big time! ;-)

Bruce Brodnax

The Brits used big game rifles to defeat trench armor. Nothing "mail order" about them tho'.

Bruce Brodnax

The cartridge evolved over time: the original had a tighter bore/groove dimensions that the later "J" [Jaeger?] Spitzer bullet [aka "JS"...] It's in deference to those older guns w/ tighter bores &amp; older steel that American ammo producers 8mm Mauser offerings are typically loaded to reduced performance levels vs. European offerings [I suspect, because with the tighter gun controls in Yurp, the manufacturers expect the owners to know the difference &amp; accordingly purchase the *correct* ammo for their particular firearm...]

Bruce Brodnax

Coolest (&amp; best) of the American-made BARs; the Swedish KG 37 and FN-D are the "best" BARs...

Bruce Brodnax

Hodgepodge. As far as the U.S. military was concerned, the Ithaca 37s and the Remington 870s accepted into inventory were interchangeable from a field issue perspective. Altho' they did experiment with that "duckbill" shot spreader barrel attachment in Viet Nam...

Bruce Brodnax

Were you asking about characteristics, or a list of the models from various makers?

Bruce Brodnax

He's going to come back with either FAL or AR-10; we already know he disfavors the G3...

Bruce Brodnax

This clearly isn't suited to rapid-fire Q&amp;A, but I do support it as a possible future IRtv episode [or perhaps series of episodes on FW?]

Bruce Brodnax

You want Alan Paulson's _Silencer: History and Performance_ volume 1. That's *way* too much to ask of Ian, esp. as his area of interest/expertise is in firearm history, not accessories...

Bruce Brodnax

I think this Q is better suited to an IRtv Q&amp;A than an FW one...

Bruce Brodnax

Bolt thrust, action mass, spring weight, weapon constraints [wt. &amp; length], etc. Far too complicated to be addressed in a Q&amp;A lightning round...

Anonymous

Interestingly enough. Canada the cutoff is 1/1/98 as opposed to here 12/31/98. So 1898 dates are antique .us but not .ca If I had to guess since if this is a gun control act of 1968 (US) thing they said "70 years ago" from 1968.

Anonymous

Will you do a presentation of the Swedish M45 smg?

Anonymous

This might not fit well in the lighting round: What is you opinion on the current historical military firearms market in terms of supply and pricing? Where have you found the best efficiency between quality and cost? I.e. Guns shows, auctions, brick and mortar shops, etc.

Jay Powers

Hey Ian! Why does the VZ58 only have a heat shield in the top hand guard and not the bottom one? It seems like an odd thing for the Czechs to leave out.

Anonymous

Will you do re-reviews of older guns with the new equipment? Possibly the older 2GACMs as well?

Anonymous

Will you come to Australia to visit the Lithgow SAF Museum and various other firearms museums in the future?

Is the steel in a Garand clip mild steel, or is it carburised sufficiently to take a spring heat treatment?

Anonymous

Have you ever found inaccuracies in reference books you own?

Anonymous

What do you recommend as a reference library for military arms? Civilian?

Anonymous

Based on your study and shooting experience, which WWII SMG was the best close-combat weapon? I've heard you express a preference for the MP41, but a PPSh with a box magazine and some hot 7.62x25 would be hard to beat in a night patrol action. I've fired a M3A1, and found it handled well, but the M1A1 seems another good choice...what's on your short list?

Bruce Brodnax

I don't want to even _begin_ thinking about the difficulties involved in bringing a firearm along to engage in such an activity, but hopefully you can provide a loaner for Ian &amp; he can schedule a visit to some of the other Svenske firearms history landmarks/museums. That would be fun to watch; I hope he follows up on your invitation!

Bruce Brodnax

I've never seen the specs, but it would have to be 1030 or higher to take sufficient heat treatment to have sufficient springiness to behave like it does.

Bruce Brodnax

Just a guess, but my bet is he's going to go w/ the Beretta 38... :-)

2021-08-14 04:18:26 Hi, I have an unnecessarily detailed Q&amp;A question! There are lots of cases of armies using captured American weapons, but not so much the other way around. With the exception of flintlock muskets, I'm wondering how many cases there are of the United States issuing captured enemy weapons to American soldiers in an official capacity. The examples I can think of were the U.S. use of AK-47s in Vietnam for special forces (the U.S. actually made sanitized 7.62 ammunition), the Henry Rifles used to guard Jefferson Davis in the Civil War (not the U.S. Army, but still), and the U.S.-Made Mosin-Nagants which armed U.S. Troops in Russia in 1917-19 (although that's not exactly captured). I'm particularly interested in what happened to captured weapons in the Civil War, Late Native American Wars, and Spanish-American War; both sides used the same rifle in the Civil War, and the Native Americans and Spanish were often armed with better or faster-firing rifles compared to the trapdoor Springfield. Also - and I know this could be a whole other question - but what does the United States do with captured weapons today?
