I wanted to make a tutorial for a long time now, but all things I could think of had been covered already. This topic at least to my knowledge hasn't been covered yet, and it's so important and easily overlooked that I thought this would be a good candidate.
If you work with Blender and do some texture work then maybe you'll get something useful out of this. If you do or don't lemme know so I can improve and make more if there is demand for it ^^

I made an example blend file which you can download here

It includes the setup you see in the tutorial complete with the nodes.

How do I go about making characters?

Do you mean you would like to see a tutorial on that? Cause that's like a whooole big question right there ^^;;

Yeah. I tried using it and doing the doughnut tutorial but I just got very confused, especially with the whole moving a grid on an object thing

Hmm to be honest I would recommend doing some more modelling tutorials then until you are fluent with the basic tools. Character creation pretty much requires you to have a good grip on the fundamentals. That being said I might still make a tutorial for characters at some point. That would definitely be interesting to talk about. In the meantime I recommend this video by FlippedNormals. It explains the pipeline pretty well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8TiAjV2f8I
