Not certain if you had realized it, but the Cole flashback was meant to be a flashback to when Wu first found Cole and got him to join the team (which was only shown once all the way back in the first pilot episode) Also, this season the writers just decided to get rid of Airjitzu and Elemental Dragons because they were going for a more grounded tone and they felt it made them too powerful. The franchise creator wrote a could-be considered canon book on Twitter that gives a explanation about revealing Airjitzu is a form of Dark Magic and that's why they don't use it anymore.
