Obviously you've watched everything by now, but my having only seen your commentary through s2e2 here, I guess I'd have to agree that this season suffers from some weird writing decisions. Bizarrely, almost none of those problems comes from the adaption. The original manga has an extremely all over the place plot and really feels like a first draft. I still enjoyed it overall, but if you stick around for season 3, know that this unevenness continues and adjust expectations accordingly.
