Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 17 of Vinland Saga!  Ok guys, get ready for 25 minutes straight of me crying!!!  WOW this was sad!!!  But so beautiful and well done!  Gardar having his true last journey on that cart (that our MVP bestie Sverkel let him take) as he phases in and out of our world, complete with flashbacks, realizations, etc., was just amazing.  I feel awful for Arnheid though, as she's lost everything now :(  And you just know they went and ended this ep with him being reunited with his son....!!!!!!!!!  I don't think I have any tears left after this ep!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Manny

Man this was so well done. I hope the next one isn’t this hard to get through. Bless Buffy. Seeing her tail in the back was the only bright spot in those whole thing. I wouldn’t have made it through without it. So cruel but so beautiful. They are together. :,(

This episode is absolutely heartbreaking but it’s so well done. I love this fight between Snake and Thorfinn it has great weapon choreography I think you would call it but it’s also nuanced with their observations of each other in addition to the fact neither of them wants to fight the other. I love how this fight really makes it quite clear how skilled the two of them are. I think it’s very interesting how both of them are internally wondering about the others origins with the two of them being in places/stations that seem far below the strength they display counseling what Viking culture values. I like the fact that Snake has to calm himself down because he’s becoming too concerned about Thorfinn because he does care about him. I love the way both of them realize how strong the other is. Things get so complex once Snake manages to get close to Gardar with the discussion of the worth of a life. From some of what we have seen of Snake you might think that money would be very important to him here but no what is most important to him here is how much he cares about his men especially the ones who have died even if they are/were awful people which is heartwarming & sad. Snake may consider himself a bad person but with everything we have seen I really don’t think so it honestly feels like he has faced major failures in his life & blames himself for a lot which is why he considers himself a bad person. Also it’s It hurts so much to see Arnheid completely devastated when her husband is stabbed like you said this being her hope lost. It’s scary to see Gardar choking Snake in a blind rage. I think it’s bittersweet that Arnheid’s voice is what snaps him out of it. It’s heartbreaking that even though everyone here knows that Gardar is dying Arenheid still wants to go off on the wagon I think to give him peace at the end especially about their son & I love Sverkel just going take it. I love how throughout the rest of the episode Gardar’s true personality shines through especially this first great moment of him not liking talking down to someone not only because of having been a slave but because of his general kindness we have heard about. I knew you were going to be a crying mess during this episode because I was when I first watched this thankfully because I was ready for it I was able to avoid crying watching your reaction but it was close. I’m glad your dog was there as some emotional support. The imagery of them being underwater to me represents how the two of them have been drowning in misery for a long time but the fact that the sun is still shining down shows that there is still hope & happiness out there even if for him it’s in death. There is something really powerful about Gardar seeing his suffering from an outside perspective with this moment of seeing all these slaves that are him as well as the slave owner. It’s both sad & sweet that at the end they are able to have a simple conversation about themselves & their lost child. I love the flashbacks of the normal everyday happiness Arnheid and Gardar were able to experience with their kid before it all went wrong. Yeah the animation really does a great job at showing how different they looked in the past before everything. It’s so sad that we see these memories of all the memories of the things he did for honor & wealth for his family some good, some bad as we see the amazing reveal that these two were the husband and wife in the very first scene of the season. It sucks that Gardar has come to a similar conclusion as Thorfinn that the path of the warrior is wrong it’s just unfortunate that unlike Thorfinn it’s too late for him. It breaks my heart that Gardar has a moment of seeing his decision that changed everything from an outside perspective now fully understanding how much his wife didn’t want this as he desperately reaches for his past self wanting to stop this too late. I have a hard time dealing with how Arnheid is handling this awful situation being strong and vulnerable at the same time giving him comfort while also letting out all her emotions at losing her love again in a much more permanent way. What a well-written female character. It’s so beautifully tragic that one of the last things he feels is his wife’s tears but I love how it leads to one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. Being able to see him have the chance to be happy again just enjoying the rain, sun & wind as he gets to go home to his son in the afterlife makes me smile through the tears. I like the detail of his son being the age he would have been if none of this had happened. At least Arnheid was able to get some amount of closure even if it was in an awful, heartbreaking circumstance. Yeah, none of us watching for the first time knew what the aftermath of this was going to look like but we knew it wasn’t likely to be good. I love what you talked about with Gardar not having wanted wealth for selfish reasons because it was a situation with a lot of complicated factors going into it. Like he wanted to help his friend, make his family’s lives better, being worried about what might happen if others acquired the minerals. And there is an inherent greed in everyone but like Greed from FMAB said “greed may not be good but it’s not all bad” “everyone wants something that they don’t have” it’s just that in this instance it was the wrong choice. Also I think it’s a little cruel that the name of the episode is “the road home” which you would assume is a positive title when it’s not. The music in the entire episode was incredible but the best music was once Gardar had the vision of going to his son. The whole warrior of Miklagard thing was not only meant to imply that Snake comes from Constantinople where he most likely worked for the military there but also was meant to set up an entire back story for him maybe not an entire episode but definitely a long scene in the season that unfortunately wasn’t meant to be because they ended up not having time to include it and I don’t know if there are details about that backstory out there because it’s anime only although the original author wanted it but I will look it up and find out & let you know. I agree with people saying they wish this story was more popular because it deserves it. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

The fight was so good wasn't it! I couldn't agree more. It's cool to see them size each other up and I agree about Snake too! I love the way that characters are very layered on this show. Gardar in a rage is scary! But yeah, bittersweet about Arnheid being the one to make him snap out of it. Poor Arnheid, seeing her this was was heartbreaking!! OMG you knew too well that I'd be a mess!!! I'm glad Buffy was here too lol. That's actually such a great point about the water/sun imagery. OMG the flashbacks about them as a family...!!! They did a great job with the designs like you said. I know, seeing Gardar realize where everything went wrong, and not being able to do anything about it...!!! I couldn't agree more about what a well-written character she is. Seeing them in the afterlife just shattered my heart lol. The detail about the son's age was great too. That's the thing, after all her suffering, it's just nice to see her at peace finally. I'm glad you liked my discussion about Gardar's motivations! I can see the correlation to FMAB for sure in the average kind of "greed".....but this situation is a bit different. OMG I know, the title is misleading, and I'm told that the ending scene/preview sequence on the one before this was edited to make it look like it was gonna be a happy ending, which is SO harsh lol! The music was SO GOOD!! That's too bad about the backstory! I'm so glad you enjoyed my reaction!!! Thanks for all your kind words and support!
