Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 9 of Vinland Saga!  WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys, this was seriously one of the most emotional eps I've ever seen!!!!!!!!  Thorfinn's journey here was excruciating but really necessary.  He had to face the pain of his past in order to figure out who he wanted to be moving forward.  I'm so proud of him for the decision he made to use his hands for good!!!  And wow, just watching him stare into the eyes of someone he killed as they both cry.....Askelladd being the one to help him....seeing Thors again....!!!!  It was all so dramatic and well done!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Become a true warrior, son of Thors. We already knew the message but we were blinded by the hate and rage of Thorfinn. So many had to die (including Thors and Askeladd) for Thorfinn to realise his purpose. One of the greatest episodes ever made. Tears me up every time. Now it's time for Thorfinn's journey to become a true warrior.. Because a warrior needs no sword.

So well said, the true message was there all along, but impossible to see under all the hate and rage. I really want Thorfinn's journey to go well!!!! He doesn't need a sword to be powerful, he's growing life, that's an amazing power in itself!!!! He's finally using his hands for good/peace :)

I love this episode so much & I agree with another comment I saw that this is one of the greatest episodes of a show I have personally watched myself it’s definitely one of my favorites. With what you were talking about in your intro about Arnheid I think it’s a good thing that this show doesn’t shy away from showing the dark realities of slavery & I think it handles this sensitive subject very well. Also I for one love when you’re intro gets long. It’s so heartbreaking that Thorfinn is dreaming that all of the horrible things that happened to him was all just a dream. I think it shows that Thorfinn always really loved the peaceful life he had as a child but just wasn’t able to understand that until he lost it & went through so many horrors. I think the saddest part of this moment is the incredible performance by the VA who somehow managed to make his adult voice sound like young Thorfinn who I believe has a different voice actor & it’s so sad because he could have sounded this peaceful & carefree if things had been different. I love how much gravity is brought into the dream once Thors shows up not only because of his significance in the story but because of that grim expression on his face. This interaction between father and son is so emotional because of the parallels between them with the demons both of them have about the sins they have committed with the people they have killed. I love that there is a big emphasis on Thorfinn finally understanding the wisdom his father gave to him so long ago about no one being your enemy & also how his father took a long time to make that realization as well. I think it’s really well written that Thorfinn is so much like his father it’s just unfortunate that both of them were not able to realize those lessons before they ended up hurting & killing many people. It fits Thors’s character that he would blame himself for not having been there for his son & fits Thorfinn that he has so much guilt over what he has done. The knife falling & cutting Thors hand is a powerful image because when his son found his father’s knife he grabbed it by the blade & that’s when Thors taught the no one is your enemy lesson. It hurts to see Thorfinn desperately try to reach his father but be unable to reach him. The impact animation/sound effects as he is falling are so visceral & the nail part is so brutal & I think you could interpret it as a representation of the pain he feels as well as the pain he inflicted on others. I think it was an incredible choice to make the warriors that Thorfinn saw in this dream/near-death experience/purgatory or whatever this was animated in an abstract & exaggerated way that was still realistic to show how disturbing the scene is. And it’s a good depiction of the horror of war & how disturbing reveling in bloodshed and fighting can truly be. I love how the reveal of ASkeladd being there is done it feels really impactful. I love how the lighting is so different because of the sea of blood the darker colors & shadows work so well for the scene. With the concept that this is where all warriors and up & considering how much Askeladd hated/was disgusted by warriors because of his past I think it’s very fitting that he is serving apart from & above all of these warriors. I think it’s so interesting to think of this as a representation of the way of life/mindset of a warrior especially how it connects to Thorfinn having been part of this world in the past. It makes sense that seeing him go through this it doesn’t feel like there is a lot of luck going around but in the long run leaving the path of a warrior has been a good thing for our boy. I love the moment of talking about how most warriors can’t escape this life while mentioning Bjorn because of the complicated relationship between the two of them with both wanting to the friends but not saying it until one of them was dying & how it was also complicated by Askeladd’s hatred of warriors/himself & how all of that happening with Bjorn’s death made me really emotional in season one. Also the two of them being the most whole physically is a representation of their strength/skill with Askeladd not having a scratch on him although I know it’s probably just to make them recognizable to us. I agree the comparison of “everyone is your enemy” to “no one is your enemy” is brilliant. I think a big part of season one is about how Thorfinn doesn’t actually grow so it makes sense why he’s thinking about it this way even if we know it isn’t true at this point in the story. I think it’s somewhat symbolic that the dead person at the top of this pile looks a little like Pater. I love this character development for Thorfinn taking on the weight of everything he’s done as well as grieving for all the lives lost. It’s so sad but amazing to see all the remorse he has for these people he didn’t think of while he was a warrior which is just an addition to his guilt. However being able to actually apologize to them must be good for him getting the chance to terms with what he’s done. I love that Askeladd goes to protect Thorfinn from the warriors metaphorically dragging him back down to the life of a warrior. I think it makes it more powerful because of the complicated relationship with this character. I think it’s awesome to bring back the idea of a true warrior but in an entirely new light with the idea that Thorfinn’s true fight is to basically never come back to this place of war & to take those he killed out of this place which be a physical representation of his burdens. And add to that the emotional music that swells as the animation goes purposefully sketchy and highly detailed/stylized with the amazing scream of resolve/termination from Thorfinn just makes this a scene of perfection for me. I think it’s so profound that what Thorfinn decides to become a pacifist as a way atone & continue to become a better person his voice acting here made me so emotional. I love how Einar just accepts this & is so supportive even if he can’t understand the philosophy of pacifism himself. Also Thorfinn seeing his father in the distance hits you right in the heart in the best way. Pater shows his own diligence & what a good man he is by finding evidence that allows our boys not to get punished. It really shows their resolve that even though they have to start again Thorfinn and Einar are not slowing down & are pushing forward with more fields with the continued teaching from Sverkel. I love how beautifully hopeful this episode is & how inspiring Thorfinn is as a person/character. Because he’s going down an even harder path than his father since as you said what is he going to do when there is a threat to people he cares about that he can’t ignore but then again maybe that’s just a trial he would have to face and figure out what he will do if that happens. I loved the comments for this reaction about the Christian symbology the comments you get are always so great/interesting. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
