Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to episode 8 of Frieren!  WHOA!!!  I was so proud of Stark and Fern in this one!  What a team they make, and DANG, I love seeing them in action!
It was funny to see that even these demons had no concept of the ways in which humans had perfected their spells to use against them.  And it seems like Frieren has a score to settle with Aura, that should be interesting!  Dang, Frieren's kind of a big deal, isn't she?!?!?!  Can't wait to see her lay waste!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

While Stark doesn't seem to have a surname, he's earned the right to have it be called Tapferkeit (Courage).

Raven: You don't want to do this, Yang. Yang: Nope, but I'm gonna do it anyway.

One thing I appreciate about this series is that while it acknowledges a lot of standard story tropes, it’s a lot less likely to fall into them. After Frieren literally takes Draht to school, most series would spend a couple episodes having to deal with “she got away, she must be guilty,” while in this one we leapt straight to Granat figuring it out. Also Flamme casting a barrier around a plant in winter leading to this town’s defense, is not unlike her planting the oak tree from a couple episodes ago. Time is a concept for Frieren, but all things develop during it. Of course, it would figure that she’s already three steps ahead of Stark and Fern who are trying to figure out how to get her out, and she’s just like, oh hey guys! You mentioned last time how both of the “kids” are trying to live up to their masters’ hopes by going with the elf - so… does that make Frieren the cool “aunt”? Of course, the real highlight of this episode is the shenanigans Stark and Fern get into, both with and against each other. I kinda get the feeling Fern didn’t want the handkerchief back after lunch for several reasons… but wow, she eats so fast she scared Stark into finishing his meal lickety split. Fern’s more of the stoic character, she’s got feelings but you have to REALLY get a read on her to know what she’s thinking, meanwhile Stark is a scared teenager, who’s not sure if he can do it. It’s kind of like that scene in RWBY where Raven accuses Yang of being a scared little girl, and she responds with “you’re right, but I’m still standing here.” Frieren’s trained Fern enough to have faith in her, and she trusts Eisen enough to know that he’s trained Statk well. She believes in them, now she’s trying to get them to the point where they believe in themselves. And one reason she’s pawning Lügner and Limme off on her underlings, is because she has to do something she’s not thrilled about, either. Also, was it just me or was that little smirk as she headed off to her fight looking a little Anya-esque? That’s it for now, you’ll have to sit on it for next week’s episode. Meanwhile, the characters are probably taking after Frieren and reading the script like this… hmm, action scene… so we love more? Can I get my coffee refilled? 😆

That's a good point about the tropes actually. Yeah they're really skipping the them here aren't they? Ohhh that's a good point about the correlation to the tree! Oh yeah, of course she's steps ahead! Hahaha OMG Frieren is totally the cool aunt!! I love what we're seeing of Fern and Stark here. I can totally see the comparison to those RWBY scenes actually! They both have really well done personalities. I love that Frieren believes in them!!! That's kind of going against a trope too, I feel like ordinarily the master would be all like "I've gotta protect you" and stuff. Hahah she's totally got some Anya energy there doesn't she?? I can't wait for this week's eps!!!
