In stark (no pun intended, Frieren watchers) contrast to the previous episode, this one is moving us back to our A Story with Thorfinn and Einar - but it’s more focused on showing the everyday life of farming and what a job it actually entails. I am not a farmer myself, obviously, but I am friends with sone actual wheat farmers in upper Montana - and let me tell you, the sheer size of a farming operation and how their lives revolve around that task - it really takes a special kind of person to be able to pull off that job. (Thank goodness there are people cut out for it, or the rest of us would probably starve.) If you recall, Sverkel was the guy Snake was yelling at earlier about where his breakfast was, and he fired back dove retort about “you slept until noon.” But he’s on night shift, so…. Sverkel is obviously a farmer through and through, and even at his age, he’s going to go until he can’t but Thorfinn and Einar’s need for a horse has left him an opening he can take advantage of, and he does so. The interesting discussion about the plow also reveals that humans were always trying to make things easier for themselves. It’s not the same kind of technology upgrade we would think of, but it is still making their lives easier the same with the horse pulling out tree stumps as opposed to what they were doing. I nearly glossed over the symbolism of the birds on the limb with the snake crawling up it - think of it as a metaphor - the birds are the characters, the snake is the world - it will strike you if you aren’t paying attention. Snake’s patrol job is because nobody really respected property lines in those days, the way they (mostly) do now - so they had to have guards out. Crops are in some ways, even more valuable than gold and silver. Let’s clear up some things: Thorfinn’s originally from Iceland, which he left sometime between the ages of four and six. His mother and sister are here, and obviously haven’t seen him since, but they are probably still there. One interesting note is that Ketil was paying tribute to Harald, who if I remember right, was Canute’s brother, the one they were at odds with over the throne. But Canute is currently in England, and the farm is in Denmark, where Canute and Harald grew up under Sweyn. This will be an important thing to keep in mind as the season progresses, just so you can keep track of where everyone’s currently sitting at. And just as I finished typing this comment, the power went out again… hopefully that’s just cause they’re working on it. What a mess. 👀

Hahaha!! Love the pun! I love this story. No kidding about your farmer friends!! Omg I know, thank God for people who devote themselves entirely to the farming industry! Right, I do remember Sverkel now! I love that Sverkel is still at it! That's true, it's interesting to see what an argument about technology "taking over" looked like at this time isn't it haha. Ooohhh I missed that with the snake and the bird! Right, thanks for clarifying about Thorfinn's origins and family! Oh yeah, Harald is Canute's brother! Ohhhhh you're right, that is an important detail isn't it, who he was paying tribute to. Nooooo not the power! Did I tell you we've been having outages here too?! :O Winter needs to chill!!! (No pun intended haha)

I love this slower paced but really character focused episode. It was great to see you take a more focused look at the opening since I love this opening a lot. I think the episode did a good job at once again showing how difficult manual labor is especially at this time & it was made even harder by our two boys not having anything to help them basically. That voice acting really emphasized how exhausting trying to get rid of trees is. It’s unfortunate that Thorfinn & Einar are unable to get the tools they really needed because of the hierarchy/class system going on with us being able to see how differently slaves & even former slaves are treated/thought of by free people like the retainers. And I agree the bullying does get old even if it makes sense but I think most of us can agree that it’s written well. It’s interesting to hear the two of them talking about what to do next because of the way it emphasizes how much of a bad spot they are in with any choice they make most likely ending up with negative consequences for them. I like seeing the way they see each other with the whole not having enough energy/having too much energy. I love the very mundane way Sverkel is introduced which reflects how he doesn’t seem to care much for flaunting his status. I love how even though they are slaves he treats them completely normally unlike a lot of characters we have been seeing & the ways in which Ketil is different from other wealthy people with how he talks & works alongside the “common” people. Doing chores for him so they can get a horse is a pretty good deal especially considering the position they are in. I think it makes sense for them to be suspicious of the deal but I like how Sverkel doesn’t care who they are & I think this shows how he values hard work & will reward that. It’s just so wholesome to see how happy & full of laughter Einar when they are able to do their work with a horse. His goofy laugh is great. I love the buildup to the reveal that Sverkel is Ketil’s father with the very momentous music. With what we see of his character I love how this reveal is shown alongside Sverkel working. I love how Thorfinn is now able to view/experience the world it’s such an interesting perspective to see the wonder & interest in how he looks at all of these things he has never experienced before now that he is no longer a warrior. I think it’s very poignant that he talks about how only someone who knows how hard farm work is would be able to create the plow and I like how it’s another way to emphasize Ketil’s wealth. I love the kindness Sverkel displays towards our boys allowing them to dry off. It’s great to get another look and more understanding of Snake in this episode. It’s funny that he is such a sound sleeper but wakes up at the smallest scent of food LOL. The witty banter between Sverkel & Snake is absolutely hilarious. I love their relationship that is sassy/snarky but also obviously filled with care even if it’s a little odd. And we get to see Snake’s own kindness when he invites them to eat. Sverkel being insulted when his food is called not that good is great LOL. It’s interesting to learn more about the jobs of the Guests with the thievery that happens. I don’t think it’s that surprising to learn that Snake has a lot of intimate relations with women considering his looks. Yeah, the comments about how easy it would be to take over the farm definitely felt foreboding when I first watched as well. I love the conversation about how too much wealth is a bad thing because it’s very true how it can increase your fears increase & spend more money to defend your wealth but also because wealth can help your happiness but doesn’t guarantee that you will be happy which I think fits with Ketil’s character. It’s interesting that the father and down son have a strained relationship like Ketil & Olmar have as well. I love the very sweet.but momentous sounding music that plays for Einar calling Thorfinn his friend. It’s so beautiful & heartwarming to see Thorfinn agree with that since he hasn’t had a real friend since he left his village & his father dies. I think it was such a great way to end the episode with more learning and teaching about farming. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
