Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 1 of Vinland Saga!  Pardon Buffy's cameo loll!  OMG!!!  What a way to kick things off - so brutal, dark, and sad, yet with a glimmer of hope at the end!  Einar is like my new favorite character!!!!!!!  I want nothing but happiness and bliss for him please!  Also, what the heck has happened to Thorfinn all these years??  Guess we'll find out!  That was a rough one to get through but wow have they set me up for being SO invested in this!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I can’t believe it’s been four years! It seems like yesterday to me.

Supermonaman

I don’t think I can describe how excited I am for you to get to the 2nd season of this series. I believe I told you but I will say it again season one was great especially the stuff towards the end but season 2 made me realize that this story is even greater than I realized & it’s 1 of my favorite stories now. I wouldn’t say it doesn’t rely on the 1st season but it mostly relies on the highlights. As long as you remember the start of the season, the crazy stuff at the end with Askeladd, Thorfinn & Canute as well as Canute’s amazing/crazy character development/transformation towards the end you’re fine. It’s always a bold choice when an anime season starts off with the opening. What I will say about the opening right now is that the animation is incredible with the dark imagery & the use of lighting/shading but I will wait to say my deeper thoughts for now. I love how the episode starts off with something abstract with Icelandic language I believe talking about carving things & I don’t think it’s an accident that the last thing this dialogue has is carving feelings with some dark imagery of a warrior & baby it’s very interesting to start with. Even though this episode is very dark & emotional I love how well done it is with the very realistic depiction of slavery as well as the brutality of this time period. Einar & his family are just really decent people who have suffered thanks to war and have finally rebuilt. Thanks to the voice acting and just really heartwarming/sweet scene of this family enjoying a meal together with a bit of comedy I think this episode does a great job of getting you attached to his and his family’s characters in very little time. There were many people who were able to live happy lives without much suffering but unfortunately like Einar many were not able to do that. I love the way violence is depicted in this show but especially in this episode because of how it hammers in how awful/cruel violence like this was in this particular time period & I think it’s the facial expressions that do that. I respect how much this mother did to make sure her children survive by calming them down & keeping them focused on a goal. Her determination to make sure he had hope to focus on with the idea of being able to start again if you keep living is powerful & shows how much she loved her children & her VA is incredible for just being in one episode. Both Einar & Lotta had somewhat of a freeze & somewhat of a fight response to what was going on with their mothers death & this short-lived confrontation with these men. It’s just unfortunate that for him it didn’t amount to much not having any skill for combat & ended in Lotta’s death. I hate to agree with others on this but her dying in this time period was probably a mercy. I love how the episode depicted all of Einar’s pain, sadness, rage and frustration with that heartbreaking scream & the really intense bit of rough/sketchy style animation. And then we transition into the part of the episode dealing with showing the harsh reality of being a slave. Starting with how if you are sick slave traders most likely won’t hesitate to throw you away like nothing which Einar is unlucky enough to have to witness. In the moment of the amazing admiration of the ocean looking monstrous a departure from S1 where the ocean often represented freedom or curiosity/dreams I believe he considered just giving up & jumping but thankfully his mother’s words came back to him & he clung onto hope however unreachable it seems. It’s always hard to see how inhumanly slaves are treated in any story like how they are only given food to look better for buyers as well as the rather disgusting moments of the traders wanting the women slaves to look younger or more beautiful & some of the male slaves to look cuter which you can imagine the reason for ugh. Also it’s upsetting to see how little people in this time period care about or are bothered by slavery & it makes sense because of how prevalent it was in this time period but it still sucks because those people just can’t understand how awful slavery truly is. It’s no wonder some slaves like Einar ran away with how bad it was. And we get to witness the terrible punishment running away from that lead to with Einar being made an example of which gives us the dialogue of the dark reality that they are far from their homes with nothing to their names. The scene of the man punishing him shows how much happiness some people will find in having power over another. It hurts to see Einar get to the point of being close to giving up on the idea of another chance for a free life. I like the scene with Leif Erickson because it not only gives us an idea of the state of Thorfinn but also shows the love and dedication this man still has to bring a boy home. And I love that he shows care to a person he doesn’t even know & I think he says sorry because he wishes he could free every slave but doesn’t have the money. I love the build up that starts once Einar is bought for a job that could give him even some happiness. Starting with the beauty of nature with this grand, slowly swelling music. And then we get the most hopeless moment of the episode of him almost accepting slavery with a glimmer of hope with him meeting our protagonist. I feel the exact same way as you about Einar I want so much happiness for this man. The ending song is so emotional & beautiful and I think it represents Thorfinn really well. And also it relates to the one quote we see that is basically saying that without love people don’t really have a lot. The craziest thing about this episode is much much of it before meeting the man who buys him is anime only & I love that. Finally listening to your after episode thoughts I think you really got what this episode was going through & I think you’re going to have some great thoughts throughout this season. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
