Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to episode 2 of Frieren!  OMG!!!!  Heiter totally tricked Frieren in the best way haha.  What a fun character, they did a great job of making him super likable in a short amount of time.  I also love how so much of the point of this show is the impression we make on each other's lives and how it impacts so much of what we do.  The flowers were such a great symbol for Frieren prioritizing the "little things" that make up our lives, and are meaningful to one another.  This whole show just makes me wanna cry!  Also, so proud of Fern!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

There are going to be frequent calendar markings on this show, referring to the years that have passed since Himmel’s death - so the important numbers to remember are, it was 20 years later when Frieren and Fern first met. At this point in the story, it’s been 26 years - and the reference implies Heiter’s death at 24 - so at the end of this story point we can assume they’ve traveled together for two years. Himmel had a presence around him, just from a desire to do the right thing for everyone - whether his comrades knew it or not, it also had an effect, subconsciously, on the way they saw through things. It’s implied Fern was thinking about jumping when Heiter first met her, just because of her situation and his bleak everything seemed - but I don’t know if she was seriously considering it or just asking the question, what’s the point? Either way, Himmel’s influence on Heiter intervened, and now she’s got something to strive for. Heiter is one clever guy - he found out the thing Frieren was being held back by, and then unwittingly had her fix the problem. He really was a corrupt priest, even up until the end. Fern doesn’t quite understand why Frieren is so insistent on doing things a certain way, and I imagine the reason she can’t give a good answer is she doesn’t really understand her own feelings, herself - just that doing some things is a lot more important. She also teaches Fern about the value of persistence - for Frieren, time us a luxury she has to hone this attitude. For Fern, well, she’s almost as tall as the elf already. Both of them will need to learn a thing or two from the other. But the moral of this story, from Himmel, to the statue lady, to Heiter, to Frieren, to Fern, is that one good turn deserves another. Side note: you’re actually halfway through the Premeire - the show dropped the first four episodes all on the same day, so they’re kind of a packaged deal. Although it can be a bit hard to tell sometimes. 😎 And I did see several people in the comments last week warning you to bring the tissue box, so please, don’t make liars out of them. 🙃 PS: You mentioned Oshi No Ko since Yoasobi is back, I look forward to seeing what you have for the comments on the last two episodes when you get to them. It feels kind of “surreal” we only finished last week. (That actually might be a good descriptive word for this show, lol.)

Dang it! That corrupt priest. 🥹 I hope that we get more of these little paths from the past with the heroes like this in many other episodes. I really like that. I like the storytelling of a group we barely knew yet got a lot from the little moments in their adventures and humor. And honestly I like the change of pace with character passings. Usually it’s solely or entirely sad in many shows. Last episode got me and I wanted Himmel alive when I saw him in the casket but quickly saw the content within it, especially with Eisen and Heiter showing their indifference. There’s something beautiful when you see a happy ending and their pals kidding around a bit like that. He most likely prefer it that way too haha. It is a happy sad that tags along with these beautiful lessons in life. Himmel’s life was short but see how impactful a life can be when time is much more limited. And the chain reaction continues. It’s really great storytelling. Frieren is much older than Fern but shes come to realize these “silly” things can be more important than reason, and she can instill wisdom without words to Fern from her own experiences. And Fern has that same experience with wanting to learn because of someone special yet she also has a bit of Frieren’s beginning apathetic nature, and it makes it very sweet to see she’s learning from someone who can teach her something special that magic alone can’t bring. This was really good.

Hahahah yes!!! I think the flashbacks/memories are nice too! I know, it's like a whole new spin on character death, right?! There's something equally tear-worthy about seeing friends celebrate a life together. Happy sad is a great way to put it! Absolutely, the chain reaction is so powerful, and it continues even after death. I love that Frieren can impart her wisdom to Fern by experience. I love the journey she's gone through just in these first two eps. So glad you enjoyed it Manny!!!

Thanks for clearing that up about the timing! I love that Himmel's nature really affected everyone around him. Yeah I got that about the jumping, I was surprised, not sure if I actually mentioned I knew what was happening though. Heiter is clever and corrupt lol! That's so true, I'm not sure Frieren can really put into words the things she's realizing/feeling. I think they'll learn from each other for sure. So well said about one good turn deserves another! Oh wow, a four ep premiere!!! Well, I'll be watching the second half this week! Ohhh I must not have remembered which show they meant, and/or they wrote it on the announcement that I made after I'd already recorded a few eps :P Isn't it surreal that we just wrapped up Oshi no Ko?! I love that we get more Yoasobi here!!
