Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to episode 1 of Frieren!  WOW what a gorgeous anime!!!  It's so pretty, calming, atmospheric, etc.  I love that we start off with the end of a journey too, that's pretty unique.  Throughout this ep we get to see the life cycle of a group of friend's, and Frieren's reaction to having been a part of a life that was so comparatively short.  I loved how sweet and philosophical this story was!  If this is the tone of the whole show, I think I'm gonna be in for a lot of fun, relaxation, and tears!!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

This show has an interesting concept to start out with: the adventure is ending as the show starts. In fact, a normal show would’ve spent the entire series talking about the journey, the battle at the end, and everything leading up to it. Hence, why it is called Beyond Journey’s End. As I mentioned earlier, this character is a little different than the last one she voiced, isn’t it? She says something fairly early on in the episode that’s going to be important, she has no concept of human lives and how short they are. She refers to a ten year adventure as if it was just a weekend. When she returns fifty years later, seeing all her friends in much older circumstances doesn’t even faze her… which is why she drags them along on a week long journey to get to the spot she wanted without a second thought. In fact almost nothing seems to get to her… until after Himmel dies - even at his funeral she still wears the same expression - it’s only when she sees them burying his casket that the finality of it all starts to hit her, and it’s the one time she actually shows her genuine emotions. The easiest comparison I can make is Arwen from LOTR - you might recall she dealt with a similar dilemma involving a human, and had to decide whether to stay with him and deal with the knowledge he would die long before she did - while it’s not a direct comparison, it might help explain the concepts being dealt with here. Frieren also plays around with a few objects during the episode that might seem random, but there’s meaning in them - we’ll discuss that more later. Twenty years after his death, she returns - and Heiter introduces her to Fern (the pronunciation probably changes based on the language accent being used by the speaker, but either probably works.) she’s a promising mage, but Frieren doesn’t really want to be responsible for her, so Heiter hopes to at least get her to train the girl a little. I would say this series is anime ASMR of a sort, the tone is much more relaxed than some of the others you watch. So there’s not really an adversary for Frieren but there’s an enemy: the enemy is time - or rather, Frieren’s lack of appreciation for the value of time. If she is to grow, she’ll have to learn more about why something that doesn’t last forever can be worth a lot more than she realizes. The previews are just a few seconds of wording leading up to the title of the next episode, they really don’t give away anything. It’s up to you, but I’d say they’re safe to look at. :)

Dang it. Okay I can see why this won the poll. I’m a sucker for these kinds of shows. 🥺

Lol it's really good right? We'll get to Haikyuu, don't worry! But first, let's be relaxed and cry our eyes out LOL :P

It's interesting how it all starts at the end! Right, she really has no concept of time as it applies to human lives. I don't think she realized the, well, realities of the human world until after Himmel died, like you said. Oh yeah, Arwen is actually a great example/comparison!! Anime ASMR is such a great way to put it!!! I kinda love that, that the only enemy is like, our own lack of understanding of the world around us, kinda?? Thanks for the info on the previews!!
