Hey everyone!  I'm back with Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, episode 21!  Ahhhhh you guys, this one was SO GOOD!!!  The fights, Todo's fight in particular, Yuji's speech at the end - it was all just so epic and fantastic!  Seeing Mahito genuinely scared was jarring!  And Todo's magical fight sequence was everything!!!  And now not-Geto has arrived??!?!  What could this mean?!  Can't wait to see what happens next!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) When I started the episode to watch it for myself, there was a hiccup in the animation that took me out of it, around 2min, Yuji fights Mahito who is shirtless because he is split in two, the next scene, Mahito in his top, then the next scene he is shirtless again... It's a shame. It's probably a reuse of animation or poor coordination of the animators, but it's like a false connection in a film, it breaks the immersion into the story. Todo's imagination is a completely WTF moment that feels good after everything we've been through. But in the end, Todo can no longer use his technique, what he does is just a bluff to disorient Mahito and allow Yuji to strike. You disappoint me, you didn't even make a reference to Gon and his jajanken when Yuji prepares his attack since they have the same pose lol. For the reason that Yuji doesn't kill Mahito right away, from what I understand, he used almost all of his cursed energy for his last black flash. The scene in the snow is not really from the imagination of one of them, it is just an allegory to show that Mahito has become the prey and Yuji the predator.

I agree with you about the distinction between Mahito and Itadori and how they took other lives. This series is overflowing with spoils. People will read ahead, so they will already know the dialogue that's to come. I think the reason people were trying to make it known that they are the same in that aspect is that Yuji says it at the end here; they knew this line was coming up. That's my guess. But we weren't wrong. I still stand behind that distinction because the difference was clearly shown in season one. We've heard him come to terms with the understanding that he can't save everyone and saw the remorsefulness about taking a curses life. But like both their energy and techniques, their mental state is evolving during the fights. Regardless of opinions, people have to remember everything that happened prior to this. With everything Sukuna and Mahito put him through, a change in approach towards ending life seems more than appropriate. Not to mention realistic, given everything that's happened. I'd be shocked if he hadn't had any kind of transition after witnessing so many heinous acts. I'm thinking about the episode where the two girls Geto saved are about to ask Sukuna to kill the imposter. The girl with the phone said something like, “We’ll never forgive Gojo for killing Geto. But we figured that was at least appropriate, given he was Geto’s one and only friend. But you (the brain) can go to hell.” That is very similar to how I think Itadori’s mindset transitions here. Regardless of taking the life of a curse or human, some lives like Mahito can go to hell at this point. And no qualms about it. We weren't wrong to say there was a difference in how Mahito and Yuji did things. It's just now there's obvious reasoning as to why Yuji is saying that they are the same. He's feeling it now because he wants to. I think if anyone has good reason to say they are precisely the same, it is Yuji at this point. Right now, he's thinking exactly like Mahito, but how could he not? And I think even though he's looking to end Mahito without worrying about a reason behind it is valid because Mahito has earned it. 👊 Also Todo!!! I loved his whole process!! It's truly unique to see how it all works out. When he's attempting to clap without his other hand, I think that was a bluff. It's a different bluff. Mahito said that nothing happened. They didn't switch, which Todo was aiming for, and lying that he could still use his technique. I could be wrong, but he does say, “Boogie-woogie is finally dead.” So I think that was it. I'm hoping I'm wrong cause that's his trademark, plus ripping off his shirt. 🙏😩 I'm trying to think back to season one. He said clapping his hands doesn't necessarily mean he's activated his technique. So, I thought that originally meant he could switch without clapping. But now I think he does need his hands to touch. He uses clapping as a bluff occasionally, like he did here. Unless I saw that wrong, if I'm wrong, ignore this. Man, this was a rant.

Hi Spadeas! :) Ohhh I didn't even notice that, but it's too bad! The animators are so overworked, it was bound to show up in their work sooner or later. I LOVE Todo's interlude here hahaha! The way Todo and Yuji work together is amazing. OHHHHH you're so right, I didn't even think of jajanken!!! What's wrong with me lol!! Gotcha, I knew the snow was probably symbolic in some way and not literal, makes sense that it was just to show their roles now.

You're absolutely right in how you've summed this up Manny! I think you're right that some are further ahead in the manga and whatnot and have a better understanding of what's coming next, but based on all we've seen up to this point, it's not out of the question to think there are some profound difference between Mahito and Yuji, it's just that in this particular case - yeah Mahito can die with no one questioning the morality of it all that much lol. In the past he has had to come to terms with not being able to save everyone, that's so true. And yeah, how could he not be thinking like Mahito right in this moment? Todo!!!!! Wasn't Todo just like a cool breeze in hell after all this arc has put us through lol!!! Ohhhhh ok, I thought maybe it was a diversion, I couldn't exactly tell. But he did say that about Boogie-woogie. That's a good point though, if clapping doesn't necessarily indicate the technique, then could he switch without clapping? It kinda seems like here they're telling us he does need to clap. I'm so glad you worked it out here in the comments because I was wondering about it too!!! Thanks Manny!!!

I love episode 21 it has everything hype, great action, character development & Todo being the best. Todo just surfing on 1 of Mahito’s transfigured humans is just cool. It’s really disturbing & I do hate it but I can appreciate the creator’s creativity when it comes to body horror with Mahito making a floor of flesh at the start of the episode which must be a dream for 1 of those cannibal horror movie villains. Yeah Mahito’s double with the snail like eyes is kind of cute in a really weird way. It’s wild but clever for Mahito to dodge the duo’s attack by cutting off his head. Also the movements of both the real & double Mahito are crazy it’s really good animation. Listen I know it feels wrong but Mahito running around as just a head especially with the animation and voice acting is hilarious. I think it’s interesting that he can create stronger transfigured humans if their souls don’t have much resistance to his technique I would guess because it allows him to use the technique faster or something like that. Someone compared this new transfigured humans to Nomu’s from MHA & I can definitely see it. I agree I like how quickly Todo can take stock of a situation during battle because it shows his intelligence. That along with his fighting skills are really useful during a tough battle like this especially when only Yuji can actually hurt Mahito. That’s why it’s so important to have someone good at supporting others in a fight which Todo certainly is with his simple but powerful technique. It was based on the information that he knew about how powerful the monstrosities Mahito creates are but unfortunately Todo did underestimate him because these soul isomer(isomer is a chemistry term referring to molecules that have the same number of atoms of elements that make up those molecules but the arrangement of atoms is different which works well for his technique strangely enough) are much more powerful than most of his transfigured humans. Seeing Todo bouncing off walls like a pinball as he is hit through a building was worrying but thankfully he’s tough enough to take that. I love that when he switches with objects he can seemingly choose if those objects keep their momentum or don’t depending on the situation. I like glass cannon characters in video games who are really powerful but have no defense & can’t take much damage so it was cool to see that these soul isomers are like that. I adore that when Todo prepares for a hard battle he kisses the locket with his 2 favorite things his idol Takada & his brother Yuji. I like that when Yuji is alone again we get to see his crazy, superhuman strength throwing the giant number sign. Also that building with the giant number is a famous landmark IRL in Shibuya which I know because of 1 of my favorite game series Kingdom Hearts as a quick anecdote… Just another casualty of this incident. Man, Yuji can take a lot of punishment seeing him go headfirst into concrete. I love that Todo is so strong that the isomers doesn’t buy Mahito any time to take care of Yuji. It’s a really great writing choice to have Mahito do exactly what Gojo did in episode 9 with the insanely fast domain expansion because of how it shows his adaptability & ability to learn & grow because of his experiences which is exactly why he’s so scary/dangerous. And once again the way his domain is presented because of the amazing animation is awesome. You know how serious things are when we start getting heavy narration but I love how it emphasizes how fast things are happening & it’s impressive to see Todo & Yuji’s reaction speed. Also it’s nice to hear about Yuki with the mention of the simple domain she taught Todo. It’s bad for our guys but it’s impressive to see how fast Mahito can use his techniques while activating his domain now having used black flash it just shows how much using black flash improves one’s abilities. Also I love how his domain looks because of how 1 of my favorite colors purple is incorporated into it. It sucks that he lost his hand but it’s lucky he reacted so quickly because otherwise he would be dead. I like how at 1st I think the show was portraying his locket falling as something negative because of the imagery of the string snapping but it’s actually something positive because of the pictures inside. It is really sweet that Todo has Yuji’s picture alongside his idol showing how much he loves his brother. And the scene of him having a magical girl moment is amazing it’s 1 of if not my favorite scene of the entire anime it’s hilarious, awesome & has incredible animation. It’s crazy that the people working on the show had a fictional idol song made for this 1 scene & it sounds amazing & fun. I love that they literally put the name of the idol followed by the name of the song(which is cool) like it’s an actual music video. It’s cute that Todo imagines himself fighting alongside Takada & as I was watching her animated I was like you know I can understand why he thinks she’s attractive. And I love how colorful this segment is as well as the moment of him being in a school girl uniform for a few seconds & even though it was quick it looks like Todo would pull that outfit off. Also Mahito being so surprised by what Todo does here is so funny LOL. Clapping hands with Mahito was such a clever and crazy move with how dangerous it was. I love that even though Yuji doesn’t know for sure if Todo is alive he decides to carry on his will & making his sacrifice worth it taking Todo’s words from last episode to heart. Mahito’s transformation here is crazy & terrifying going from the disturbing animation to just suddenly being in his new form now that he fully understands just how powerful his soul can become. It feels like he has specifically designed this new body for killing/destruction and nothing else. Also there are parts of this new body that resemble Hanami and I wonder if subconsciously he wanted to look like his dead friend. I don’t know how but the author & animators somehow made this fight go up another level and I love how impactful both Mahito and Yuji’s feel at this point as well as how the movements get more dynamic and both of them become faster which is crazy because it was already so impactful/fast. I think the sewer area was a really good environment even if it was simple & I liked seeing how both of these characters moved around in that environment. I love how the both of them are really damaged and worn out but still pushing beyond their bodies limits it just feels exciting. As soon as the text saying that no sorcerer can use black flash at will I was like “oh my God Yuji is going to be able to break that wall” & it’s because Mahito pushed him so far. Also I like the glass breaking effect representing breaking through something. I think I mentioned this in my last comment but I love how shonen 2 characters pushing each other beyond their limits and to become stronger/reach new heights is even when it’s a hero and a villain & that’s kind of been the whole thing with Yuji & Mahito since their 1st confrontation in the 1st season which makes the characters more interesting. I agree the imagery of Yuji with a completely shadowed over face with the red and black behind him is great. I like that even with how powerful he has become Mahito still needs to be strategic at the end of this fight because of the feeling he’s getting from Yuji. I think what happened when he turned half of his body back to normal was changing it slightly to make Yuji’s attack glance off him while at the same time taking the power in his entire body & focusing as much power into his right side as he could. As well as going for a long range attack to avoid any black flash attacks. I love the way Todo shows up to assist at this moment with an almost angelic light behind him similar to a moment with a fluorescent light shining down in episode 20. And I love the philosophical talk here about how clapping is an expression of the soul which I saw someone say that it reminded them of Netero from HXH with his praying. Even if he can no longer use his techniques I love the way he fakes out Mahito in the same way he did to Hanami in S1 making him think there was going to a switch when there wasn’t just to give Yuji the precious seconds he moved to land a hit on his foe. Black flash scenes are always great but this particular one that basically took down Mahito hit different with the constant black/red lightning being animated in a really great way & the voice acting/facial expressions showing Yuji’s rage/determination and Mahito’s pain added a lot to the moment. It’s terrifying but I love when Yuji just becomes cold/logical towards this situation & Mahito is kind of amazing from a story/VA/animation standpoint. Also the face he makes here especially at the start was exactly the same as when he witnessed what Sukuna did and even though the animation was darker for that somehow it felt darker in this episode. It’s both sad & powerful to see Yuji just go know what if this is a war then I know what my job is kill curses. And that means killing you no matter what form you take. This gigantic shadow with red eyes emerging from Yuji is horrifying but it’s so interesting to see him talking about not caring about meaning anymore but also thinking about potential meaning in the far, far future especially when you think back to Gojo asking if he needed a reason to want to kill cultists in episode 4. It’s surreal to see Mahito terrified out of his mind but I’m also like this is what you wanted trying to break Yuji & now you got it. It’s a fuck around and find out situation for sure LOL. The switch up in animation with the incredible cold/snowy forest scene had me floored with how great it was. There was a lot being thrown at you this episode so I don’t think you should feel bad for not realizing this was a purely symbolic scene I was the same way. I love the symbolism of Mahito becoming the prey & Yuji becoming the predator with the rabbits and wolves. But something I like to think is that this is also representative of Megumi being with Yuji in spirit. I love that the white wolf representing Yuji has a scar on his face like the wound he currently has even if I have a hard time seeing it. Also the wound on his face with his exposed teeth/cheek I think looks purposefully like when Sukuna’s mouth appears on his body. I don’t feel bad for him but seeing Mahito futilely running away and then welling makes me sad realizing that this is what he is and I do feel pity for him especially with how confident & self-assured we have almost always seen him. A really interesting thing is that Mahito has in a way been trying to get Yuji to experience things like a curse but in this moment maybe he made Mahito experience/feel what the humans who died at his hands felt/experienced and experiencing some humanity. Once Geto arrived asking Mahito if he wanted to be saved my 1st thought was I wonder if he Is going to save him but in a really messed up way. But I didn’t have any predictions about what was going to happen next things are just that crazy. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
