Hey everyone!  Here I am with the seventh ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  Wow you guys, coming hot off the heels of a very emotional episode, they did a great job of showing just how fickle public opinion really can be - and Aqua knew just how to shift that perspective!  WOW did he know what he was doing, putting all this together - and I love that the whole gang was there to help because they care so much about Akane!  Seeing all the love surrounding her in this ep gave me hope after seeing all the hate last time.  And it's sad to say, but a public persona might be the best guard against getting hurt like that again....I'm just surprised she went so hard into Ai's personality, WOW!!!!!  Like there's method acting and then there's this!!!!  Can't wait for more!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) You were lucky to have been warned in advance about the suicide issue, I went there without having this warning, I wasn't ready lol. As someone who went through a very shy adolescent phase, keeping a lot of things inside (which I still do), and having also been bullied when I was 13/14, I had a lot of empathy with Akane in this episode. About the internet etc, the show Gatchaman Crowds also mentions this problem, where the main heroine, who becomes known after an event in the series, is subjected to the attack of haters on social networks and when one of her friends asks her how she reacts to that, her response is "I'm turning off my cell phone". But that's also why I love his character and if you've never seen this series, which is a rereading of the world of Gatchaman, a very super sentai-ish old anime, it's really worth seeing for the review of our digital society and Hajime, its heroine, I happily consider her to be one of the most badass anime heroines I have ever seen. Seeing it again makes me appreciate Kana even more, she's been through it but remains strong and when she saw Ruby worrying about Aqua, she tried to cheer her up. Akane becoming Ai gave me chills and the stars are indeed just symbolic. This and Akane studying Ai to create her version are scenes that reminded me of Skip Beat as I said. To set the scene for you, Kyoko the heroine, has started to break into the world of show biz and is offered a role in the remake of an old drama which was successful. She must play Mio, a character with scars on her soul and physical scars on her face, she is a secondary character but who stood out in the old series and her actress at the time plays Mio's mother in this remake. The actress in question became famous thanks to Mio and does not accept the way Kyoko plays her roles, trying to get her kicked off the set. But after some advice, she questions WHO Mio is and creates her own version. I'm going to try to make a clip to show you this, because even after seeing it several times, I still get chills when I see this scene again. Edit : It's okay, here's the clip, well it's almost half the episode, so 10min, might be a bit long, so watch it when you have time. Just to give some other information, normally Kyoko is a rather jovial girl, who still believes in fairies, quite girlish and polite. Tsuruga Ren is one of the main male protagonists, love interest and senpai of Kyoko, he was the professional actor who had provoked her to force her to play the way he wanted (like Aqua when he played the stalker), but Kyoko has come to respect him over time. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v3Hrhy9ugndoUn2omWxz7eVV0YwHNQiB/view?usp=sharing

I'd like to think Aqua's instincts as a Doctor came to the fore when he saved Akane. He knew the signs and acted.

When Akane slips into the "Ai" persona and the ED music starts it gave me chills.

Like I said earlier, Ai *haunts* this story like a ghost.....larger than life.

Maybe your mouse was accidentally highlighting the subtitle text? Only thing I could come up with. One thing I forgot to say about the events leading up to Akane’s suicide attempt in the last episode is by themselves, all those negative comments and thoughts don’t have much of an affect. However, pile them all on top of each other… and then you get the situation here. It seems that several people on the cast had noticed Akane wasn’t doing well, but they really didn’t consider how wrong things might’ve gone until the last minute. Sometimes the action you don’t take is as much at fault as the action you do. Kana is discussing Akane’s situation with Ruby and points out that “it’s enough to give you the illusion your whole life is over.” At first, she seems to be just giving Ruby some insight into how the relationship between performer and social media works - but upon closer look, it’s not a stretch to infer that there’s been points where Kana has been exactly in the same mental state Akane had just gotten to. Being a child actor, probably only compounded the magnitude of the mental and emotional stress, especially after her work started to dry up. She points out Ruby’s so new to the scene she’s never had to face any of this. It’s interesting that reality dating shows are so severe on a lot of participants that countries require counseling - but then again, it’s one thing to put out a “persona” and another where you’re putting yourself on the line. Then you become the target. “Everyone thinks they’re an exception as they drive people into a corner.” The thought process is “even if I send one critical tweet, it’s not like the other person will see it or care, so I can say whatever I feel like.” Aqua was at the police station because the police probably needed to ask him what was happening with Akane. Also, he kind of reiterates how important it is to be observant: “People die easily. When someone cries out for help, if you don’t act quickly, it will be too late.” In Akane’s case, the cry for help was a lot harder because it was her silence. Fortunately her coworkers picked up enough fast enough to figure something was off. I also feel like there’s some weight behind that statement because in his previous life he was already a doctor, so he probably had to deal up close firsthand with a lot of incidents similar to this. I think the first thing was probably the most important and that was the rest of the cast letting her know the others were there for her, despite the “staging.” Sometimes it’s just as simple as someone bothering to care what you think. Granted, this is an extreme case, but you know what I mean. That probably gave her the willpower to keep trying. You don’t see Aqua lose his cool too often, he’s usually pretty grounded. But this situation got him pretty enraged - enough that he started by reporting the incident to the press. Miyako (you were close, the last letter is O) criticizes Aqua’s choice to take matters into his own hands, but unlike the other kids, he’s got some grounded experience as an adult to help him make some decisions about what to do next. He compares what he was doing to a poker game, which is fairly apt of a description for the industry, as a lot of it is based on lies and misdirection… you have to be able to make the audience discern between what’s fake and what’s real. The genuine article comes by rare enough that it’s easier to recognize, as opposed to a farce. As he discusses with Mem-Cho, the badgering of Akane is only being done by a minority of people who are super loud on the internet. Most of them don’t know how to feel and realize they need more information - which Aqua plans on providing. Mem-Cho is actually pretty good at self marketing and knowing how to work the system to up her views. And it kind of shows just how much everyone wants to help when the rest of the cast chips in and wants to help Aqua contribute. (This reminds me to ask you, you considered tweeting out your YT reactions when you upload them to the channel? Might help your traffic. 😉) Remember last week when I told you Yuki had given Aqua some important information? On a show like this, there’s always a camera rolling. The director admits he has the footage, but it’s kind of impressive how Aqua uses his words to point out “you were protecting yourself and your job, which nobody would fault you for - but what happens if it comes to light you didn’t protect the kids?” It’s reverse psychology, and a lot of times, it’s a lot more effective in getting someone to come to a conclusion rather than forcing the issue directly. Editing and producing even a five minute video takes a lot of hard work, Aqua’s exhausted and ready to collapse - but thanks to Mem-Cho’s insight and the others, they got the narrative surrounding Akane to shift - and it probably means more to her than the others are going to realize. Of course, people will still bring up the incident long after the fact. Celebrities all have to be super mindful what they say on public socials, both Kana and Yuki make a note of this - but it’s also how the subject of playing a persona comes up. It helps to shield the real you. Aqua gets asked kind of out if the blue since he’s the only guy around at the time, but Akane immediately starts doing her own research, which is extensive. She even managed to figure out Ai had sex during puberty, something that would be extremely difficult to pick up on, but she’s that observant… Meanwhile Kana makes a remark that actors are always competing with each other, and the environment is “eat or beat eaten.” To her, Akane is a talented actress who is competition… In fact, Akane so down to the last detail that when the cameras roll again, Akane is able to even alter her physical appearance and voice to be the spitting image of Ai. No contacts… that’s all her. Not too much throws Aqua for a loop… but Akane might’ve just (to steal a quote from a character you know well…) Nailed it! As for what this means in the future you’ll have to tune in next week… but in the meantime, she’s definitely entered the chat. Oh, and by the way, one last thing before I go, just so you know, I’ve adopted Akane as my own daughter, so other people will have to get in line. Her personality’s too relatable not to like. 😉

Bless Aqua and the crew. That’s what you need right there. A good of friends.

Hey Melissa, those were two very exciting episodes. I loved your reaction to it and felt the same emotions that I felt with you the first time I watched it. Unfortunately, Akane's fate is not an isolated case. People have to deal with cyberbullying every day. I find it incredibly sad that people can take it so far that other people want to kill themselves just because of hate comments. And in some cases, it doesn't end in a happy ending like in this episode. I'm so relieved that Aqua was able to save Akane from death. It was really adorable to see how much the teens supported each other and put the video together for Akane. I'm also really impressed with Akane's acting skills. She really managed to bring some emotion out of the otherwise stoic Aqua. I'm curious to see where the whole thing will lead to.

kamenriderhime

She truly does!! Her presence is larger than life and ironically could never really die/disappear.

kamenriderhime

Hey Leonie! Thank you so much, these eps were amazing and I'm so sorry you really felt the emotional weight of them watching the first time, too. It's horrible isn't it??? There are so many cases where it doesn't have a happy ending. I was so relieved when Aqua showed up, I really thought that was it! And all her friends rallying was just so adorable and inspiring! I know, Akane was feeling like her skills were weak comparatively, but right now she might be the one evoking the most emotion with her talents, if she could move Aqua!!!! I can't wait to see where it goes next!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) I was, that was quite an emotional ep! I'm so sorry you didnt have the warning!! I'm so sorry you went through that as a teen!! Gatchaman sounds amazing!!! Thanks for recommending it! Kana's really earned a lot of respect from us hasn't she?! Akane's personification of Ai is impressive and chilling! WHOA!!!!! I just watched the clip of Skip Beat and wow....like I'm sitting on the edge of my seat here in my pajamas just absolutely engrossed in it hahaha!! Thank you so much for explaining the plot so I'd know what was going on. I can for sure see the similarities to what's going on on Oshi no Ko!!! Wow, who knew acting was so intense lol?! Thanks so much for sharing that! I really wanna watch Skip Beat now haha!

kamenriderhime

Ohhhhhh I didn't even know my mouse could do that to subtitled text :O Yeah it's the sheer volume of those comments that really becomes overwhelming. It's sad that folks were noticing something was wrong with Akane and didn't take more action, it can be really hard to gauge where someone's at sometimes, but it's always horrible when you realize just how bad it was too late. Kana talking about how this kind of situation makes you just want to die was so disturbing to me, I felt awful for her in that moment. It's surprising yet not surprising about the need for counseling on these shows - I think the blur of reality and fiction makes the vitriol of fans' flaming so much worse. I've heard of this kind of mentality on the flip side of the coin - people think that if they do one positive thing in the world, it won't make any difference, but the cumulative effect can be striking. Here we see that but with negativity. People think they can just say/do whatever they want online and somehow it's just like releasing it into the void and it won't affect the person on the other end. Such a great point that Aqua probably picked up on this more quickly because of his previous life/work as a doctor. Yeah Aqua doesn't lose his cool easily! Ohhh thanks, I was so close on the name lol. The comparison to a poker game actually makes a lot of sense. Oh that's a good idea about tweeting my reactions! Honestly I so rarely use Twitter, I know I could probably be doing better with social media marketing and all! It figures that the camera would always be rolling. And Aqua's subtle manipulation of that conversation with the crew guy was impressive. Editing is no joke!!! I'm glad they emphasized that :P Yeah it can be nerve wracking knowing that something you say online can be taken so wrong and blow up so badly, but that's a great point that you also almost don't want to "break character" and that's another aspect of watching what you say online. The fact that Akane could tell that something changed about Ai during puberty, most likely the start of a romantic entanglement, really shows off her deductive skills!!! Akane totally nailed the Ai persona didn't she!!!! AWWWWW congrats on adopting Akane hahaha, I can totally see why, she's a sweetheart!!!!!!!!!!!
