Hey everyone!  Here I am with the feature-length first ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  WOW!!!!  I'm still just in shock over this whole thing!  It had so many twists and turns that I honestly didn't know what the real story was gonna be until the last 2 minutes!!!!  The layers, emotional depth, drama, cringy comedy, and commentary here were all superbly done and I am just SO invested!!!!  I was heartbroken all day by this ep and even had dreams about it lol, I'm just still so stunned at how much it managed to pull me in.  I'm so excited to see where this is all going now that we've added the thriller/mystery element to the very well established drama.  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Sorry it's late, I started cooking and watching the parade before I realized I hadn't posted it :P

Hi Hime :) Oshi no Ko means "favorite child" or "the children of their idol", which is a good title to refer to the fact that Aqua and Ruby are the children of an idol, but Oshi No may refer to Ai's name, Hoshino, so the title can also be translated as Hoshino's children. Speaking of Ai, her first name means Love, which she had difficulty understanding, but also perfect for who she was, since Hoshi no Ai would translate to "love of the star", representing her Idol entourage, but also the love she had for Ruby and Aqua, which they returned to her. This is also of course well employed by the symbolism of the stars in Ai's eyes, which Ruby and Aqua share, making the puns "child of the idol (star)" and "love of the star" even better thoughtful when they really have stars in their eyes. For categorization, the genre would be Idol, drama and murder mystery, but Shonen also works, the manga is after all in the shonen jump alongside One Piece and MHA, but also Spy X Family in the end. The song Idol by Yoasobi which serves as the ending here, happens to be the opening of the series, so you will hear it again and again for the weeks to come (not that we are going to complain, it's a banger). But without wanting to, I already made you listen to the ending, Mephisto by Queen Bee, since it's the song that I shared with you in my review of Chainsaw Man before even knowing that you were going to react to Oshi No Ko. Now, on a more personal note, I didn't jump on the anime when it came out, I already knew that it was about the world of Idol and it didn't appeal to me more than that, but given the craze , I decided to watch the first episode out of curiosity, suffice to say that I was slapped. Besides all the story elements, one of the good things I took away from it was the president's wife, Miyako, who ended up becoming Ruby and Aqua's mother. Having been a few episodes ahead of you, I can say that the relationship between the three seems really family and it feels good after this first episode, to know that they still had an adult to watch over them and love them. Just for information, this morning I had only seen the first two episodes, but just before you posted your video, I had just finished episode 5, so I could probably give you some elements that I could see during a second viewing in the comments, even if I tend to overanalyze.

Happy Thanksgiving! We decided to stuff an entire turkey’s worth of plot points in to today’s episode. So, as I said to you recently, this is a work based on a manga by the same author as Kaguya-Sama: Love is War. When the manga was originally released it immediately had a demand for an anime adaptation. In fact, the studios were SO confident in the success of an adaptation, the Premeire episode you just watched was released directly to cinemas, and they did everything to directly adapt panel to panel from the original source when creating it. Trying to describe what this show is about is a fool’s errand. The safe thing to say would be emotional whiplash. Gorou (the original doctor, his name isn’t mentioned), is a fan of Ai because of his relationship with Sarina - so how, ironic, then, is it, that the circumstances that befall both of them make them end up as AI’s children. They don’t verbalize a lot of it on screen, but the most important aspect of Ai and her children is their unique eye pattern. It’s interesting that the kids only have one eye that reflects the quality of their mother. Could that be a metaphor that they are equal parts light and darkness, given what we know about their father? Something I like to do is like make connections between on screen actions and off screen situations: there’s a ton of that going on in this show. Ruby is scared to dance because when she was Sarina, she was always falling over. Aqua used to be in charge of everyone else, but now his favorite idol is in charge of him. Let’s not forget the entertainment industry aspect: you probably can appreciate this, but what you see on a screen is far from what’s actually happening: there’s a lot of wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. In such a cutthroat industry it’s extremely hard to make a name for yourself. This isn’t something I know firsthand, it was relayed by other commenters, but it is important to put on, regarding AI’s line of work: apparently, Japan’s idol culture is ruthless. If you are lucky enough to even make it, there is a strict expectation you are supposed to follow - basically you’re not expected to have any sort of personal life. Getting a boyfriend would be scandal enough. Actually getting yourself pregnant with twins? Well, it’s actually on the level of career murder. Someone else might be able to talk about this more but to my understanding, what she did was not something deemed culturally acceptable. We are mostly Westerners so we have a bit of a more, for lack of a better term, “accepting” mindset with things like this. In Japan, this would be career suicide. The other mom’s name is Miyako, while I’m thinking of it. Also, there’s something super hilarious about these kids acting like deities, engaging in flame wars, and doing fan dances. It’s basically a reference to “Look Who’s Talking,” if I’d have to guess. Aqua’s learning a few things about the scope of acting from the Director, but the truth is, he’s just being himself - so much so that he is able to upstage Kana, the child actress, without even trying, and she knows it. Natural ability is going to get you in the door of the industry, but you need more than just that. Speaking of the industry, AI’s fate is just one of those unfortunate dark sides of the line of work they’re in - most people who are a fan don’t get obsessed to this point. But there are those people who have nothing else to hold onto. And when you find out that the object of your obsession is just in fact another person with their own thoughts and feelings… reality cracks for you. He probably committed suicide (I’m not sure you registered that) because he couldn’t reconcile the lie with the truth. AI’s death scene is probably one of the most important in the series, and it’s pretty well done - in fact it’s hitting so many different emotional tones and such a trigger for everything that comes after that it immediately jumped into the top 20 of “most heartbreaking anime deaths of all time.” AI’s seiyuu, Rie Takahashi, won the Spring Season award for best female seiyuu for her work, and I’m pretty sure a lot of that was fueled just on her performance in this two minute segment. In fact, I do have to wonder if there’s a lot of people who worked on this series who felt a lot of the content felt like it was hitting them where they live. It should also be noted that Ruby’s seiyuu is a newcomer, and I believe this was her first role. The opening song, which plays at the end in this case, also gave its band a huge boost: I’m not surprised you’ve heard it, but I still think the reaction should be done with the added context as it was designed specifically for the show. It is actually the first Japanese song to hit the top of the Global Billboard rankings in history. I told you you weren’t going to know what hit you, I did… but the funny thing is you’re acting like this was the finale… and it’s the first episode. It’s become widely regarded as one of the best anime pilots in existence. “Oshi No Ko” is translated as either “children of the idol,” or, “my favorite idol’s children.” As you can see where we left off, Ruby and Aqua are now high school age and starting their first day. What awaits these two reincarnated otakus? Who is their father? How far will they go to pursue their goals and achieve their dreams? What lies will they tell? What truths will they discover? This whole story, as it turns out… is a lie. But it is also the truth.

Thank you for this reaction. You're such an empathetic person and wear your heart on your sleeve, so I knew this first feature length episode would really put you through the ringer and I was not disappointed. Ai Hoshino's story is so profoundly sad it definitely made me cry the first time and again watching along with you. She was lucky she got to co-parent with President's wife, who yes, definitely stepped up as a co-parent. She was good and loving mother, right to the end. President's Wife does not disappoint either. She goes on being a supportive adoptive Mom, which made me happy to see. In dying so young, Ai achieved a kind of immortality of sorts, the same way a Marilyn Monroe or a James Dean or a Selena has....they are forever young in our memories....and in this way Ai Hoshino is a haunting presence that looms over the entire rest of the narrative, larger than life. Oshi No Ko definitely pulls no punches and shows us the dark underbelly of Japanese Idol culture and the entertainment industry more broadly. A lot of real-life child actor stories are pretty messed up and tragic, like the cast of Diff'rent Strokes, for example. It's difficult for many to come out the other side reasonably well adjusted and mature into an adult acting career. There are treacherous waters to navigate very carefully for young performers and their parents alike. The one star eyes are a visual cue they are definitely Ai's children. Also, the soundtrack to this series is absolute fire. The Yoasobi hit "Idol" plays over the end credits of Ep.1 but becomes the series OP going forward. I think you'll like the ED by Queen Bee, so be sure to watch it for Ep.2; and you're right, Yoasobi's IDOL definitely caused a dance sensation of TikTok for quite awhile, especially among young Japanese women using TikTok. The visuals of the OP match the song even better than the End Credits here, so look forward to your impression of them. Only tangentially related, I just came back from Kumoricon 2023 out in Portland, Oregon, which had several anime voice actors as industry guests. I got to formally meet J. Michael Tatum & Dani Chambers, which was fun. I've also recently met Natalie Rial & Kristen McGuire previously who are part of the English dub cast of Oshi No Ko (Kana & Akane, respectively); another industry guest at Kumoricon this year was Brittney Karbowski, whose line I did not join because I've met Brittney before at other cons and anime events like Anime At The Alamo. Turns out she was on my flight back to Houston (she lives here too) from PDX. It was kinda cool seeing her come down the aisle and walk past me, knowing who she was, but at that moment she was just a tired Mom holding her kid in her arms, just wanting to get home. I didn't greet her or say anything to her out of respect for her privacy and her boundaries. I'd met Brittney before, like I said, and while it was pretty neat to see her again, I'm just a fan, and I didn't want to bother her with fanboy b.s. at 50K feet. Yes, actors are amazing people but they're also just people with ordinary concerns, stresses, lives, etc. Anyway, Oshi No Ko is an amazing series, rather dark, but deeply impactful. I look forward to your continued reaction(s).

PS, one show that Oshi No Ko also vividly reminds me of is the first film of the late Satoshi Kon, namely Perfect Blue. Also an examination of the messed up side of Idol culture & its fandom, and how hard it is to break out of into other more lucrative work like film & stage acting. If you've never seen Perfect Blue I highly recommend it.

The saddest part of Aqua having his full medical knowledge in Ai's final moments is that it only meant he knew how completely f*cked she was and that in his toddler's body he could do nothing to save her...

ABHB Ya-iba

I never prepare myself to watch something like this, just take a quick peak on some moments in the show. I know the brief story through, but I don't wanna watch it all. I feel like I gonna miss Ai. I feel like if I watch it, I gonna be so sad that Ai has passed away. But hey! Ai has reincarnated too! In Geats x Gotchard movie as one of the Chemies who will appear in the film! (Voice Actress pun LOL)

Manny

Oh dang this was not a good idea to watch alongside JJK. This was powerfully sad. Man I’m so emotionally wrecked right now.

kamenriderhime

Ohhh interesting! It seems like there's a few works that try and highlight some of the darker sides of the industry. Thanks for the recommendation!

kamenriderhime

OMG I know....like at first I was like "oh good he's a doctor" but in a way that just makes it so much worse - he has no tools/resources but knows just what's going to happen to her in the most technical sense. :(

kamenriderhime

I hear you, it's tough to get through eps like this! I'm gonna miss her too. OMG you're kidding, at least we'll get to see/hear her again in the movie!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Ohhhh interesting about the title! That works on so many levels. WOW I didn't even realize her name meant love, that's so poetic considering the circumstances! Who knew there was so much irony surrounding all their names. That's interesting that it can technically be categorized as shonen, and I didn't even realize that Idol was a category! I've heard this song so much and I love it! OHHHHHHH you're right about Queen Bee!!! I knew it sounded familiar! Yeah I feel like this show is really living up to the hype! I was surprised about how the president's wife stepped up. Oh nice, glad you're getting caught up!!! I can't wait to hear your analysis!!!

kamenriderhime

Hey, sorry for the huge delay! Thanksgiving weekend was busy (mostly with work lol). Hope you had a great one! That's so awesome that the same author who wrote Kaguya Sama wrote this!!! I know, the irony of the two of them becoming her kids was not lost on me! I noticed the star pattern in one of their eyes - good call about the possible meaning. Oh I know, there's so many details you can analyze in this! Very true about the entertainment industry, I'm in such a teeny tiny corner of it that I'm not sure I even qualify as someone who can comment on that, but I can relate to all the behind the scenes stuff and the impact it has. I've heard bits and pieces of how the idol industry works, but this really highlights just how ruthless it is, wow. Seems like there's even more emphasis on the "image" than there is here. It reminds me of old school Disney channel stars, only way worse! Thanks for reminding me about Miyako! OMG the scene where they convince her they're gods is so funny! It's ironic that Aqua's just being himself in his acting skills. Yeah I noticed they mentioned her stalker committed suicide later but I was still pretty wrecked by the previous scene. It happens in real life that people get obsessive over celebrities to the point where it's unhealthy, there have been famous people who died because of this (one who comes to mind is the singer Selena). OMG I can see why the death scene is such a big one and seen as such an important scene in the fandom!!! It was SO well done and just utterly beautiful and tragic. No kidding about Ruby's VA! I'm sure a lot of the creative team and actors could relate to the material. I could definitely do a separate reaction for the song now that I have context! I've heard it a lot, it's pretty viral on TikTok I think! OMG you were not kidding about not knowing what hit me, sheesh!!! So many questions, I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!!!!!!

Spadeas

Oh also, since I talked about Queen Bee in Chainsaw Man and now in Oshi no Ko, I want to talk about another anime, seeing that Queen Bee made the opening, one of my favorite this season and it might interest you too, but maybe it's better than I talk about it in PM ?

kamenriderhime

Awww thank you so much!!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! This one definitely got me right in the feels! The president's wife really stepped up for sure. I was thinking of Selena a lot during this episode and I think you're right about dying young and the impact it has on someone's legacy. You're so right about sad stories of celebrities and child actors. I think they're really serious on this show about showing how intense and awful the industry can be. I'll watch for the ending, and I've heard the opening SO much on TikTok!!! I know there's a dance for it and everything! I can't wait to see the op/ed in the next few eps, I'm watching them today! Oh that's amazing that you met so many people at the con! Awww that's such a sweet story about Brittney! That was really considerate of you to let her be a mom and not approach her, hard as that must have been. Celebs are people too!!! Good for you! I can't wait to see more of this show and I hope you love my reactions!!!!

John J Ronald

Although Yoasobi has recorded an English version of "Idol" available on iTunes, I'd like to recommend AmaLee's English cover instead. While Yoasobi's English version is technically correct in its translation, you can see the real difference in the cover version created by a native English speaker like AmaLee (who is also an anime voice actor in her own right)...the colloquialisms & slang AmaLee uses are on point and really capture the spirit of Yoasobi's original in English more so than the more literal translation does.

kamenriderhime

Oh I LOVE AmaLee!!! I agree, she does such a great job with translations. And she's a VA too, I love hearing her pop up in different series!!! Thanks for the recommendation!!!

crazizzle85

As a fan of the virtual YouTuber idol agency hololive, a lot of them covered the song idol. I wonder how it feels for them to sing this given weird fans are an issue in that scene too There's a really cool fanfic that takes advantage of this and kaguya-sama being in the same universe, by having her be reborn as kaguya and miyuki 's daughter. And since kaguyas maid is hayasaka ai, she gets named after her. It's a cute one shot that I endorse as headcanon lol.

kamenriderhime

Ohhh that's such a good point actually, although I'm not surprised that there are lots of covers! Oh wow, no kidding! That's actually so clever!! I can see why you claimed that headcanon lol!
