Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 1, episode 5 of Chainsaw Man!  Oh dang, lots going on in this one!  Denji achieves the "dream" only to find that context, atmosphere, buildup, etc. are key!  And so now there's a new mission thanks to Makima's....persuasiveness?  We also get some really devastating background here regarding the Gun Devil, and if they're trying to show me what I think they're trying to show me, then that's a really sad backstory for Aki!  We also meet some new folks in this one, and wow, Denji's being solicited quite a bit in this one LOL!!!  Can't wait to see where this is all going!  Great ep!  Can't wait for more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The flashback was done a little different in the manga. When Makima said the gun devil killed around 1.5 million people, she meant around the world. In the manga it showed the kill count in each country as the Gun Devil zoomed around the world from America, where it started. So yes that was Aki, no he's not American, the Gun devil just appeared in America and went from country to country

I suppose this episode’s alternate Friends-like title could be, “The One Where All the Girls Tease All the Boys.” I’m no expert on relationships, never HAD one - so my observations are kind of from a outsider’s view, as a caveat. Denji got what he wanted from Power - but it wasn’t really all he thought it was cracked up to be. I mean, when you think about it, in social circles, it’s obviously quite a thing - he really didn’t get nearly as much pleasure from the experience as he thought he would. What Makima is doing is half-teaching and half-luring. I’m not completely sure what the age difference IS, but she can’t be too far into adulthood, so I don’t know how I should feel about the age difference. But what she’s doing is explaining to him why his achievement felt so “hollow” - and at the same time showing him the concept of intimacy and how it improves a physical relationship. Then, of course, now that she’s given him a taste, here comes the “if you’re a good boy I’ll give you a better treat!” tactic. Why do I get the feeling this is like a rather exaggerated version of high school? I suppose it’s one of the things you love about anime in general, no topic is off limits. Anyway, the flashback indeed was Aki as they confirmed it by fading from his childhood self into adulthood. His right hand “woman,” the one with the eye patch is named Himeno, I have a feeling this is who people were excited for you to get to know. I’ll take it one step further by letting you know her VA is the same one who’s behind Hunter x Hunter’s Killua, yep she showed up again. Using RWBY and JJK to explain devils makes sense - however my theory (I’ve seen this show but I’ve forgotten a lot of it since then) is they’re somewhere between curses and Grimm - Grimm automatically go to negative emotions and Curses can be created from anything - devils seem to spawn from negative emotions about a particular topic, hence the Gun Devil being controlled by suppressing news about gun violence. Aki seems to be after the Gun Devil as a revenge plot, but Himeno’s worried about losing another partner. You know what getting to wrapped up in that sort of thing can do to a person… Hang on, Power and Denji are fighting in the hall again. The same hall where nobody can go anywhere. You care to guess who started it this time? NO RUNNING YOU TWO! (Also, Himeno teasing all the guys in the squad with that remark isn’t helping!) 😅

Ohhh ok that does help it make more sense! I'm glad I guessed right though! Thanks for clearing that up!

Hahahaha yup that sums it up! Yeah I think Denji learned that it was better in his head than in practice in this particular case. That's the thing, like in some ways, he is learning about how love, relationships, etc. work from Makima. But there's totally a more manipulative aspect here too, and that combined with the age diff doesn't always make me feel great about it! I can see how it's a very exaggerated version of high school! I'm glad I was right about the flashback and OMG, I can't believe that's my son haha!! Yeah I think they're sort of a combo of Grimm and curses for sure, good point! Oh yeah, there's bound to be some drama over Aki's revenge mission and Himeno's need to protect him. Hahahha sounds like you've got your hands full over there, good luck!!! :P

Makima is very skilled in sensual attraction...she definitely knows what makes Denji tick. She also knows that the Gun Devil is such a formidable opponent it's unlikely she'll have to actually "reward" Denji in that way, or it'll take him so long to accomplish it won't be illegal anymore when/if she does "repay" him the way he wants. She knows it will motivate Denji and he will fight to the death in pursuit of his new "goal". Himeno is absolutely not subtle....she's probably dated every single member of her team, regardless of gender. She's lost 6 partners and death is a constant companion...so she embraces hedonism full bore because she knows she could die any minute in this job. Kobeni redeems herself eventually, but this hotel mission is not her finest hour.

kamenriderhime

It seems that way for sure! Well that's a fair point, if it takes him a few years or something then I suppose it would be on the up and up by then maybe??? But yeah, Himeno is way less subtle! I can see why she's have a "yolo" attitude. I mean, I suppose you can't blame Kobeni for this bringing out the worst in her.
