Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to episode 1 of Kamen Rider Gotchard!  WOW are we starting strong in this one!  The Den-O vibes are so strong, and I can totally see how it feels similar to Fourze too!  I love the setup so far and can't wait to see how the plot develops and all the twists along the way.  The premise is cool and mystical, the villains have SUCH a look, and I love the main Rider look, wow!!!  Not to mention the SONG!!!!!!!!!!!  I think we're in for a treat here you guys!!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Meet our new alchemist in training! Gotchard!!!! With the help of his new Pokemon-esque friends! And the song title is called ChemyXStory, the x being sileny and being a play on 'Chemistry'. Performed by Back-On! Performers for animes like One Piece, Black Clover, Fairy tail! And even did the insert them for Keiwa's Bujin Sword form!

Hi Hime :) The hero who discovers a secret group in the school is very Fourze, it's especially that when I read the summary which guided me on it, we'll see later if other elements resemble it. A grasshopper as a basic form, it seems like a big nod to the first Kamen Rider (the scarf too), it is possible that the train is also a reference to Den-O, but at the same time, the train remains a very appreciated and popular element in Japan (there is a super sentai which revolves around this theme too). What we see in the sky at one point, a snake eating its tail, is the ouroboros, a very formal symbol evoking a cyclical aspect. Add to that that among the three villains we already have Clotho and Atropos, two of the three moires who in mythology weave destiny. The third will surely be Lachesis, the third moire. In any case we start with an idea of a cycle, of starting over, of destiny, etc. Especially since quite early in the series, we discuss the career choice of our two protagonists, one who does not yet know and the other whose destiny has already been chosen. It seems that this idea of destiny, cycle, rebirth, whether also through alchemy, will be a major theme of this series. By the way, “renaissance” is the French word for rebirth precisely. So, we keep the theme until the end lol

I believe I heard someone say recently that reacting to a pilot episode is probably the most difficult because you’re getting so much thrown at you - characters, introductions, plot concepts, story devices, so it can be a little taxing to both be active and process what’s happening concurrently. You said Reiwa - I think that’s everything from Zero One up but what was the other period you mentioned? Also what did we call the previous era? Actually asking. Anyway, the designs on the masks - for some reason I got Joker face vibes. Anyone else? Just me? I think I’ve managed to put together names for the most part so far though: Hotaro - Kamen Rider Gotchard Kudoh - female alchemist (is she gonna fill the Winry role? You know what I mean. 🤔) Minato - the teacher who turned out to be an slchemist Kajiki - the occult / conspiracy friend Atropos - seems to be the leader of the bad girls Clotho - the one who fought Gotchard The mysterious male who gave the driver to Hotaro (autocorrect keeps changing it to Jotaro) isn’t his dad, I’m pretty sure one of them would’ve either recognized the other or addressed them by name. So apparently there are 101 chemies - and until now they’ve all been secured and collected, but if they get loose they run wild? But since Hotaro had Hopper and SteamLiner cards they did what he said. …we’re gonna have to catch all the others, aren’t we? Gee, I wonder if these cards are circulating in Japanese toy stores as we speak… 😁 Oh, and you know what you have to do now - you have to add another Kamen Rider figure to the shelf. The humanity, right? The first episode’s always a little harder to get a bead on but I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time to sort out everything. After all, it’s not like this franchise ever stops spitting out content… 😅

Very fun Pokémon concept, I love it! Hotaro is a nice guy I can relate with. It’s a great contrast from someone like Ace who’s ice cool chill 24/7 and makes some kind of mysterious grandeur action. Hotaro is playing things by ear with his grandeurs, that’ll be exciting to see. I’m excited to see what he has in store. 😎 I knew I wasn’t the only one thinking Aizawa at the teacher. Atropos and Clotho? Like the fates right? In Greek mythology? Hm interesting 🧐

That's so true, it's all the establishment in one shot, it can be a lot! Yes, you're right about the Reiwa era! Kamen Rider goes in eras based on the current Emperor. Zero One was the first of the Reiwa Era, and before that was Neo-Heisei, which started with Kamen Rider Decade I believe. Heisei is also a term that was used for a phase in Kamen Rider based on the Emperor - although I don't think those are the actual names of the Emperors, but I could be wrong! That's a bit beyond my knowledge :) I can see Joker vibes for sur! Ohh awesome, thanks for the name info, you know I'll need it haha. Omg yes I can totally see Winry vibes!!! HAHAHAHA omg your autocorrect is a Jojo reference :P Yeah that sounds like pretty much what the plot will be!! Hahahaha hmmmm I wonder :P Yesssss another year, another figure for the shelf!!! Ok, I know its a bit late. But I'm not quite free these past days. But now, I'm here to talk about Gotchard! --- "Alchemy" is a pseudo-science that attempts to create "gold" from various different combinations. One experiment to do so artificially brings to life a race of creatures, and the story revolves around an era where these experiments were being conducted in secret. In the story, the artificial lifeforms known as the "Chemys", made to imitate things that exist in the world such as grasshoppers, were created from the art of the best alchemy techniques. Each and every one of them were carefully stored in "Ride Chemy Cards' until they were accidentally released all at once into the wild. Our main protagonist, Houtarou Ichinose, is entrusted with the Gotchardriver and the mission to recollect the Chemys that have been released into the world. Some are well suited for human companionship and if resonated with a good heart, Houtarou can fuse with them and transform into Kamen Rider Gotchard. However those that are influenced by human malice, there is a danger of them birthing monsters known as the Malgam. This is a story that explores the nature of good and evil, which are two sides of the same coin. Will Gotchard be able to "collect them all", or will he let his carelessness mark the destruction of the world? --- Said are the sypnosis of the story. But now we all see that how it got released. Although I still don't know why they are released since they can get out of the card by themself, or not? Actually, the only time I saw them get out other than getting released, is when the previous holder of those cards disintegrated. Those this mean Chemys will obey their master, but will unsealed when their master gone? As the first episode come out, the opinion in my fandom group quite separated. Most of them really disappointed from the unrelated scene or unreasonable plot. Like Rinne asking Houtaro's name in that situation quite not a good thing to do at that time, and that the major flaw of this ep is after Gotchard's rider form henshin. A scene when Gotchard engaged into battle with The Mantis monster for real first time was really poor in term of image quality, like it was produced with some 2000 era camera like that. Some also satisfied with this first ep, but quite few. For me, I didn't please, but also not disappoint. It's like I rewatched this ep for like 5-6 times before you post your reaction. I saw all the flaw, like Houtaro running on the Steamliner (kinda like Touma's light bridge) and is able to turn around and catch the bridge. Or how disconnect of each scene, like when Houtaro first met Minato and about to depart, then he suddenly bump into Rinne. There's no scene showing he's running even though it might be only a second long, but cutting it off make it feel disconnected. Also, they didn't introduce Houtaro's friend who's into unidentify being that good. Kajiki didn't have much air time or proper introduction. I still remember how wholesome Ryotaro's from Den-O introduction is. He bump into the bullies, the bullies steal his wallet, and then like... "Nogami Ryotaro, is this your name?" OMG! That's quite a way to introduce a character name! Comparing to this, I still quite not see how they introduced each character names. We only knew a little bit compared to the launched information. But anyway, I still don't think it's that bad. Some people who said this episode is suck said that they really hate Rinne's character. She's so arrogant and have no problem insulting Houtaro in the classroom. But some (also me) also argued: "Well, that's quite a basic plot line for a school setting like this." Yeah, I don't see how this is suck, but still, if there were a student like this as my classmate, I would not come to like her as well. Ok, since it might get to long, I gonna pause here and continue in the reply.

Now then, let's talk about the main cast. Houtarou Ichinose (一ノ瀬 宝太郎, Ichinose Hōtarō): 17 years old. He was born to his mother Tamami Ichinose and an unnamed father. At some point, Houtarou began helping his mother run their family restaurant. He was set as a filial son character, as stated before, he help his mother run her restaurant. Although, he still don't know what to do with his life. He's in the period of looking for his dream or what he could do. Some might think he is not serious in his career searching, but one stated that he's actually serious, since he don't want to just put anything in his career sheet until he find the right one. He is Kamen Rider Gotchard, transform by combining 2 card contains Chemy monster called "Ride Chemy Card" into the GotcharDriver. The point is not just any random combo will work, each card has only one that can match with them. We called that "Best Match" term as "Gotchanko" (They subbed as "Gotcha and Go", but actually, it's "Gotchanko") Like how Hopper1 is a Gotchanko partner of SteamLiner. And how you find a Gotchanko? There are a few clues hidden in a card. In the TV series, you can only see that the back of the right pair are the same, inserting them into the driver and pull the lever will create Gotchard's face. However, that's not the major term we use to determine the Gotchanko. Each card has its attribute and level. Although they didn't provided the attribute clue in TV series, in the toy version will have it scripted at the bottom of the card for what its Gotchanko parter's attribute is. Still, the major rule to determine the Gotchanko, and I think it might play as the main theme of the series, is their level number. Like how Hopper1's is "1" and Steamliner's in "9". The Gotchanko partners must have their level sum up into 10 (for now). But not any level 9 card can match with Hopper1. As I said, the toy version will provided its partner's attribute clue, so there will only be one match for each card. Kamen Rider Gotchard has 2 man modes: Normal mode which is the rider like form, and "Wild Mode", something like a fusion between both Chemys. You already see both Mode of SteamHopper which is his main form already. SteamHopper form is Gotchard's primary grasshopper and steam locomotive-based form accessed by using the Hopper1 and Steamliner Ride Chemy Cards in the Gotchardriver. Gotchard can transmute into his Wild Mode, Steamhopper Wild, gaining heavy, hard armor and super-jumping power. Gotchardriver finisher for this form will be "SteamHopper Fever": Gotchard presses the Altvoke levers on his Gotchardriver before assuming a one legged stance. After he pulls the Altvoke levers once more, Gotchard lunges at the enemy, briefly assuming Wild Mode to increase his velocity. Finally, Gotchard reverts back to his Rider form to deliver a flying kick, empowered by steam that severs the bonding between Chemy and the enemy. And that's all for Houtaro/Gotchard. Rinne Kudo (九堂 りんね, Kudō Rin'ne) 17 years old, the main female protagonist of Kamen Rider Gotchard. She is a high-school alchemist affiliated with the Alchemy Academy. Rinne is well-mannered and academically gifted. However, she does not have quite a friendly personality. As I say, they have problem in introducing character. But I think that they might cover for it in next few episodes. So I marked it as possible spoiler and decided not to tell you now. Minato (ミナト) is a teacher at Furasu High School and the Alchemy Academy. His name is borrowed from one of Gotchard's producer, but someone has spotted a gimmick in his name. Ryo Kajiki (加治木 涼, Kajiki Ryō) is a high school student and Houtarou Ichinose's best friend. He's into mysterious and monsters. ???: The one who give Houtaro's driver. Since the series did not provide his name yet, and his name might be a spoiler content, so I won't tell you now. Three Dark Sisters: Atropos, Clotho, Lachesis. Atropos is the one look youngest, but somehow the oldest, Clotho is the one transformed in this ep, and Lachesis is the remaining one. In this show, the alchemist used a certain kind of item called the Alchemist Ring. It depicts the logo of the Alchemy Academy. The rings are also used for alchemy and as is also used as "proof" and a "source". The ranks of the Alchemists are classified according to the color of the stones present on the rings. There are 4 kind of rings: Silver & Blue for Houtaro and Rinne's ring, the lowest rank. Silver & Green which will come after in the future. Silver & Red, the one Minato is wielding. Last, Gold & Red, which ??? who's give driver to Houtaro is holding. Alchemy, as in this series, is the arts of giving life to non-living things or transforming them. So, even though I was confused for how moving things like those junks and leaves is considered as Alchemy, as I found this information, it is quite "a little bit" answered. There're still more in the next reply.

Here's some trivia, or you might considered them as fun facts. You know that this series is all about combining into 10. Both Houtaro's and Rinne's surname hold a certain gimmick. Ichinose Houtaro (一ノ瀬 宝太郎) contains "一", which mean " 1 ". While Kudo Rinne (九堂 りんね) contains "九" which mean " 9 ". A '1' and a '9', are they the Gotchanko partner? Well, the answer might be "yes". The production team has stated that they plan to make Rinne's another main protagonist, not just the main heroine like Hana (Den-O) or Izu (Zero-One), but she will hold the position of another main character, like Philips (W) and Vice (Revice). So, we have to see if they can make it well. Since Revice's head writer plan to express "Girls power", but seems he didn't make it well, or he might not used to Rider's plot. Minato also contain the gimmick. Someone in X (twitter) has stated that his name is actually a combination of 3 numbers. Mi = 3, Na = 7, and To = 10. Or actually, it might saying that 3+7=10. Is he the Level 10 card holder? Ok now, we come to Chemys fact. As I stated, each Chemy will contains its attribute and its level number. And since we have 101 Chemys, it is divided into 10 attributes with 10 card for each (with one missing). Not right now, and if you talk about cards rarity. I think the common rarity card is not rare at all. I got 7-8 each for a box, where only 1 legend rider card of each rider is present in the box. Although they are all in box 00, box 01 will come with more rarity level. Out of 10 possible legend riders, only 3 will be in a box. Also, I forgot to mention that there are a parallel version of some cards too. It's like alternate art. And it's considered super rare! Only 1 for a single box!
