Hi Hime :) The Bandits of Golak This time, the side "visions" comes from hiding and being seen. Whether it's our siblings trying to be discreet but getting caught in the act on the train or the village at the end that has a Jedi in hiding. This episode has a very Indian / Middle Eastern side, especially the fight which is very bollywood with the music and the choreography. Even the villain, would almost resemble the description of Hindu deities like Shiva. The Pit The theme of the visions with the fact that the pit is hidden from the eyes of the city but also that the only visions of the slaves in the pit are the stars and the sky. The stars and the sky in general have always been a sign of hope in Star Wars so it makes sense with what we see in this episode. The little girl has a hairstyle that really reminds Leia in the first movie, or episode 4, well you know which one I'm talking about. I also really like the "follow the light" which is both for the light side of the force, the light of hope represented by the one who escaped, but also the people of the city all carrying a source of light by going to the pit. Aau's Song I think it's 3D CGI, with a very textile aspect, so I suspected that the style would please you, you who like to create things in this kind of material ^^ Even if the theme is more related to the voice, the song, we still have the theme of vision in the sense that Aau's father does not see the potential of his daughter. But yeah, the story and the style make the whole thing kinda cute. In the end, in these three episodes, there are three young girls, with a connection to the force, who leave for new adventures and a new life. Which was also the case in the episode you were talking about, with an apprentice being recruited by a sith. In the end, this theme of the apprentice or the young person sensitive to the force, comes up in almost all the episodes too. A really dear theme in Star Wars, passing its legacy to the next generation. Personally, I would be in for a season 3, all as heterogeneous in terms of visuals and influence. Season 1 very inspired by Japanese animation was cool too, but expanding it globally like that gives even more variety in my opinion.

There’s a lot of similar themes running through this batch, which is ironic because I’m certain they were all working independently. Funny how that works out. Anyway, the first one is from India, which you might have guessed from the look of the credit list and the overall look and feel of the piece. India tends to put a lot more focus on their colors and also I believe the word you are looking for is texture. Coloring is carefully selected - the humans are colored in normal tones but the Inquisitor (yes that was one) is an odd shaped green, being the antagonist. Either way it’s another story in the universe about people having to grow up - sometimes too fast - and being forced to make choices. In this case, each sibling has to make the choice to part ways for the betterment of both. The second episode is the only offering that is coming out of Japan this time - and of course I don’t need to tell YOU how creative people in that country are. Was anyone surprised that the Empire did what they did after they got what they wanted? It seems that most of the citizens had no idea how the city was built or got there - and a lot of the Imperial power was built on that kind of secrecy - about what they didn’t tell the general public. I mean, the Emperor himself rarely made any appearances in public because of this. Also I think when the troopers threw the kid back into the pit they may have unwittingly left a trail the citizens could follow, even though there were… other factors at play. The kid made a choice to find help, and the citizens and the prisoners chose to believe him. The Imperial curtain only works when people stay in line, but break enough links and… it crumbles under the pressure. The last one is a South Africa production and it does kind of look like patchwork craftsmanship (the look, not the quality). There isn’t really as much to analyze, it’s more about another kid “finding their voice” and having an massive effect on everything even though the adults aren’t completely aware of what’s going on. But it still comes down to choosing what Aau will do with it in the end. Star Wars at its heart is deeply American based in its originality but you can tell how it resonates throughout other countries as well - all three of these were made by countries who were probably about as opposite in culture to the US as you can get - yet their stories still resonate because they’re speaking the same language with the same characters. The Force, the Empire, the different story threads - they’re limitless in the stories you can weave with them, but they all have the same foundation weaving through them. It doesn’t matter where the story comes from - it just has to catch your interest. Because in the end, it’s a large Galaxy of Star Wars fans across the world from all sorts of different cultures, and although the culture and language of each person is different, perhaps we aren’t all so different from each other after all.

Some heavy hitters here. The first one felt like I watch watching a movie. Till the end I forgot I was watching Visions. Maybe muted color is what bad-batch is compared to this color palette. Very vibrant all throughout, especially that candy. 🍭 The Pit was powerful. I don’t even know what else to say. That one hurt to watch. No matter how good it was it just had me at wow! It was devastating and hopeful. It just grabbed you and had you remember it takes one to start a light. Aau definitely had your style in it. Definitely looked like felt. Idk what they do for that kind of animation but it’s astonishing what tricks they can pull off in these different studios. Definitely more hopefully but tearjerking. Saying bye to family is tough. And when you have a gift that can help many have to take it in Star Wars. Her papa is proud of her. It was beautiful way to end it. ♦️💎

For sure! I know, it did feel like a movie didn't it?! Omg I know, the colors were SO colorful!!! Powerful is a great way to put it. It was definitely devastating and hopeful all at once!!! Haha Aau was made just for me apparently :D It truly is amazing how all this animation is done! It was sad but in a sweet way! It's so hard to say goodbye, but when they galaxy needs you, I guess!!!! What a great batch!

Hi Spadeas! :) I agree about the bollywood vibes!! And interesting point about the theme being hidden from sight/in sight. I love the message of hope in the light/stars/sky motifs in The Pit! Light was both literal and metaphorical here. Haha you guessed right about Aau's Song!!! I do love my yarn :) That's amazing how it's animated. So true that the theme of vision is present here in Aau's father not being able to see her gift at first. So true that all three of these were about young women too! I love the theme of passing the torch too, which is definitely a big one in Star Wars. I'd love a season 3! And I agree, the first season was awesome and it was great to expand to different countries in this season, too!

kamenriderhime

I agree, I love the similar themes, particularly when doing them in threes like this! That was my guess too but I didn't wanna say for sure until I knew! That's so true about the coloring too - it's not only colorful but the colors are meaningful. Oh wow, The Pit was from Japan!? That's awesome! That's such a good point about the Empire, it only works when people don't band together, as we've seen time and time again. I know, it's not surprising about the Empire, sadly, but it still hurts to watch! That's so cool that the last one is from South Africa!!! I love the textured look! It's sort of a coming of age in a way. I agree, Star Wars is technically American but borrows from many cultures, events, etc. Like you said, it's amazing how another culture can come in and tell a story from their perspective, and it still rings true with what Star Wars is all about! I love that message - that maybe we're all more similar than we think :'D

2023-05-31 03:45:29 The presentation of the first one is so good. The color, the music, the fight! I saw on Twitter that it actually reused a bit of animation from Maul vs Ahsoka from CW which is neat. The second one was really similar to In the Stars imo, a tragedy with a simple but powerful message that’s all too real, especially recently. I’m really curious what LucasFilm did for this one, cause it’s the only one where they’re listed with the other studio. Also, the captain was easily the most intimidating normal Stormtrooper, that guy had a VOICE lol! I really liked Aau’s Song, it was really cute and pretty, it was cool to see another stop motion one. I was honestly mad at her dad though when he stopped her in the mine, I’m pretty sure the reason it started shaking and everything is because he stopped her in the middle of her song. I really hope they don’t stop this show any time soon and continue bringing in more studios from different countries, it was so much fun seeing all the different styles & stories that could be so similar to each other even though they’re from different people & cultures.

I agree, wasn't it awesome! No kidding about the animation being from the Maul/Ahsoka fight! I know, the second one really hits home. I was curious about LucasFilm's involvement too. Yeah that one Stormtrooper did have a real voice on him lol! Ohhh good point about the shaking being because of the dad stopping her! It was cute and sweet wasn't it! I hope they keep it going too! It's great for Star Wars stories but also for seeing cultural interpretations of things we already know, which is really cool! Not to mention all the different art styles!!

Yes for the first episode I totally agree, it does look like later TCW/Tales Of The Jedi/Bad Batch in design and animation. Of course Lucasfilm's own graphical engines are in use for those shows, and this won't be using them; but it looks fabulous. It does look painted, and Bad Batch does this too, but while BB looks like its painted in chalk, especially on the armour of our crew; this looks more like its painted in oils. I know force sensitives need to hide at this time, but what kind of monsters would turn a kid in to stormtroopers because she used the force to grab a flute? Credits of course, but there is more to life than selling your soul for a bit of money. Love the very Indian take on an Inquisitor, his design was very cool. Purge troopers standing alongside him also, nice! The slow-mo effect during the setup for the duel is a very Bollywood visual. Haha the Indian granny Jedi was awesome! And the fight itself was beautifully choreographed. If that wasn't motion captured, thats exceptional animating. When the brother and sister part, and play their little bandit game, its bittersweet. She'll be safer with the remaining Jedi and thats what her brother and father would have wanted; but its doubtful he'll see her again. He gets the flute back as a parting gift though to remember her by. A simple enough story, but terrific in execution. Onto The Pit, and some of the stormtroopers are voiced by Steve Blum who plays Zeb and Matthew Wood who does your beloved battle droids and Grievous, as well as being pretty much the chief sound designer on Star Wars. Its another pretty bleak story to start, using prisoners to build a city nearby from all the wealth generated by uncovering kyber crystals; and then to abandon them in the pit thats been dug. I couldn't disagree more with the elder fella stating to sit and stay - and do what? Starve to death? He's been ground down literally by the regime and is tired of it all. The kid though hasn't given up hope and strives to find a way to get help by climbing out. He gets out and people are rather stunned by the story but need more to stir them than the voice of a lone kid. The troopers throw him back into the pit which kills him, but his message lives on and the people shout to give those in the city the evidence that they are out there. The people rise up and help to rescue them. The themes in this one are unity against oppression and solidarity against injustice, emphasised in the mural at the end. Oh my god, I LOVE Aau's Song! Everything about it is beautiful, from the animation through to the story. The Jedi reminds me of Luminara, and I think she's the same species, but the way she holds herself is so like her. Note her father keeps tugging Aau's little scarf over her mouth, as he thinks her voice around the kyber crystals are dangerous, but the Jedi is right, the kyber is calling to her, so she wants her mouth uncovered to sing to them. Of course this isn't a canon story, but remember the kyber crystals generally call to a Jedi in some way, so that the Jedi knows its their crystal. We've also heard of 'song' being called out by a crystal in Rebels, when Ezra heard the song of the giant kyber crystal that was due for the Death Star. Here ALL the crystals are calling, perhaps crying out, to Aau, to cleanse them of their darkside taint. And she has the ability to do this. She is a being of pure light, and is a great gift to the galaxy. The Jedi can help her control her gift and wherever she goes, she can rid areas of the darkside. As you note, there is something so pure about this episode, one that fills the heart with joy. A great way to end the season.

That was Steve?! I’m kinda ashamed I didn’t recognize him lol

Glad you agree about the visuals! I know, I was thinking the same thing about the person who turned in the little girl! The Bollywood style was so fun! I know, that ending hit hard - they did a great job of building up the emotion in the time they had. WHOA, I still can't get over that that the VA for the stormtrooper was Zeb - and the other stormtrooper VA being Grievous (and the sound designer, whoa!) is so cool as well! It's a bleak one for sure and I hear you about the idea to stay put. It's so sad but yet uplifting that the message lived on even when the boy didn't. The themes were really powerful. I'm so glad you loved Aau's Song too!! That's a good note about the scarf. I think you might be right that the Jedi is the same species as Luminara. That's a good point about the crystals too! This isn't a totally new concept, just building a lot upon it. It's just so pure right!!! I couldn't agree more!!!
