HEADPHONE WARNING at the beginning hahaha :)

Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 6 of The Bad Batch!  OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No way!!!!  We get a Wookie and it happens to be THAT youngling Wookie from CW?!?!?!  What a callback!  And I'm so glad he's okay!  It was awesome watching our Batch spring into action to help the Wookies, and really cool also to see Kashik.  I really feel like Gungi needs his own spinoff series lol.  We also got to see the Trandoshans again, who are now apparently working with the Empire.  I just still can't believe this happened, I'm so happy lol!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I've seen this episode about 7 times now, and whilst it is a favourite of the series, I can't help but just have an overwhelming sense of sadness throughout. We all had the same reaction to you Mel. I saw this bit in the trailer and it blew my mind, but I wish I hadn't as when I saw him in this episode, that feeling of surprise when he force-grabs his lightsabre, was lost - but you got to experience it the best way! I hate seeing Gungi all alone, who has seen and lost too much, and is struggling to survive. Even at the start here, he escapes from a cage that would have been transporting him to god knows where. The last time we saw him, he was so happy with his fellow 'tribe' : Katooni, Petro, Zatt, Ganodi and sensitive Byph; in that wonderful, fun youngling arc in Clone Wars. I don't even want to think about their fates... Wrecker mentions about it being a long time since they have been to Kashyyyk, and this is a nod to what was supposed to be their introduction in Clone Wars. In one of the unfinished arcs, we were to journey with Yoda "good relations with the Wookies I have, yes.." and team up with the Bad Batch there. In fact you can see some of the unfinished episodes on Youtube still; Wrecker himself looks pretty much exactly the same as his design back then. And also this episode was written by the same writer as that arc, and incorporates many of the same creatures and fawna that were supposed to be in those episodes. When we get there, we see that, guess what, the Empire are there and decimating the place. They have destroyed a village which Gungi saw in his dreams, only furthering his trauma! If you look carefully, the fur under his belt sticks out and is reminscent of a Jedi tunic. He is able to show the spiders through the force however, that they carry no threat to them so they let him pass; and this shows he has some mastery over his force balance still, as we saw something similar in Rebels when Kanan and Ezra were blocked, and could only then bypass the spiders on Atollon, after they rediscovered their own balance. Kashyyyk itself is one of those mystical Star Wars worlds, full of deadly animals, but also a strong connection to the force itself and how much the wookies, despite being technologically advanced, stick with their tribal attachments to the nature of their homeworld. Hunter's line about Omega and Gungi being kids, but not being able to be them in this galaxy, hits hard. This episode is very much anti-war. Though Gungi's original path to being a Jedi is taken away from him, he can rediscover his purpose and be a hero to his people as they look to fight off the Empire from their world. And in that, he can still help people as was his destiny when he became a Jedi.

The Axis Droids at the start appear to be a smuggling ring so it’s quite possible the chain code transaction they were there for was on behalf of Sid. You know, you’d think the clones would learn by now, that if you turn your back on Omega and leave her to her own devices for one second you’re gonna get dragged into something… but a young king Wookiee wielding a lightsaber is a new one for me. I did half wonder when we headed for Kashykk if Chewbacca was going to make an appearance, though. Also, the burned out village wasn’t Gungi’s definitively, it just happened to be the one the clones had an immediate address for, so it’s where they went first. Seems like the Empire found a “like-minded” race in the Trandoshans. I’m not 100% positive, but I do believe that’s the race that hunts others for sport and dropped a bunch of different people and Jedi on a deserted island to make sport of killing then. No wonder they get along. But I’m not completely sure if I’m pegging them correctly. Here’s another question, why we’re they so keen on blowing up the carved rocks? Obviously they mean something to the Wookiees but was there more to it? Any time I hear Empire, smoke, and deforestation in the same sentence it’s not a good sign. The spiders only attack you if you pose a threat, so that’s why they were able to be “directed” towards the enemy, because we all know which side is more likely to not proceed with caution in a fight. I picked up on this because the subtitles let me know about it, but during the fight at the end Wrecker was imitating Wookiee sounds as well as after the battle. Not sure exactly how I’m supposed to feel about that… 😅 The last episode was very Indiana Jones like, but this one gave me really strong vibes from the original Avatar movie (the James Cameron one, not the Last Airbender). If you know, you know. But the question now is… did the Imperials inform their command post before all this went down about Gungi? I get the feeling this story may not have reached its conclusion yet…

Oh right, makes sense that they'd be there on a mission from Sid. Hahaha you can pretty much bet Omega's gonna get into trouble if left to her own devices! But yeah, I didn't see this one coming either! It would have been cool to see Chewy but maybe they didn't wanna overdo it lol. Right, it's probably hard to find Gungi's original birthplace since he was likely a baby when handed over to the Jedi. I'm trying to remember what we know of the Trandoshans from CW and I'd say that's fairly accurate. I know, I can't imagine why it was so important to blow up rocks other than maybe clear the area and also hurt the Wookies spiritually speaking. HAHAHAHA I think I actually caught some of the Wookie noise, omg!!!!!!!!! Wrecker makes a great Wookie! I've never seen Avatar but from what I know of it, I can see the correlation! Well, that's a good point. I can't imagine they're just gonna drop it when there's someone force sensitive involved.

OMG!!! I can't believe the trailer spoiled this! I'm so glad I got to see it totally blank!! I know, poor Gungi!!! I don't want to think about the other younglings either...like you said, he must have already been through so much at this point. Ohhh no kidding about the nod to the unaired footage! That's interesting! Aww his fur is like a tunic!! Also, poor Gungi having to see all this after all the trauma he's already experienced...!!! Good callback to that scene in Rebels too. That's so interesting about Kashyyyk!! I know, that line about them being kids really makes it even more sad. I really hope he has a good life here!! He still has a life to build, even if it's not the Jedi path he thought he'd be on. And his force sensitivity could definitely help his people!!!

Oh it certainly made us all excited for the season when we saw Grogu, but it is a heck of a spoiler for this ep. Its why I don't watch trailers really, but with the delays for this season of Bad Batch last year, when we got the trailer, I acquiesced this once. Really avoiding the Ahsoka trailer though as best I can, been good so far, hehe! It gets worse on Kashyyyk over the coming years as the Empire step up their presence. Again linking it back to Jedi : Fallen Order. Cal visits there in the game around 4 years from this time, and there is full-on battles between wookies and rebels (led by Saw Gerrera btw) and the imps. Gungi isn't present there; but hopefully he remained safe, especially as Inquisitors came calling there too. :( With him being a wookie though, they are exceptionally long-lived (Chewbacca in ANH btw is 200 and not even middle-aged yet); so if he can get through this period, he may be around when Rey rebuilds the Jedi Order and may come back to it once everything has settled back down.

I hear you, it's kind of good and bad that they showed it lol. I hear you, it was a long wait for that new season of Bad Batch! Good luck staying strong on the Ahsoka trailer!!! I know how hard it can be lol. That's too bad about Kashyyyk! Ohhhh I do feel like I may have seen clips of the parts you're mentioning with Saw!!! So cool that they brought him in! I'd love it if he helped Rey rebuild the Jedi Order!!!!

This is one of my favourite episodes. I did see Gungi in the original trailer, which produced quite a reaction at the time!! However, that didn’t spoil it too much as I have a memory like a sieve and had forgotten this by the time the episode came out! It is a relief knowing at least one of the Younglings survived Order 66 and I wonder how Gungi did survive?? I sadly assume not all his friends did survive, and as much as I always really liked the Youngling episodes, it was always a melancholy thought knowing that these very likeable, good natured, and cheerful children likely would not be alive for much longer, and some might even be killed by Anakin/ Vader himself (a very disturbing thought, for some reason). It was interesting to see Gungi’s snarling reaction to the Bad Batch crew initially. It very much reminded me of the young Kanan’s (at this point Caleb Dume’s) reaction to the same Bad Batch clones when they attempted to approach/ chase after him just after order 66. The same almost animal like fear and hence aggression towards a threat after having just been traumatised by what they had witnessed. This makes Kanan’s reaction to first meeting Rex, Woolf and Gregor etc even more understandable, and his overcoming this past trauma even more significant. We did see the Youngling Katooni dead at one point in season 6 of Clone Wars, but that was a vision during Yoda’s testing by the force spirits, and I don’t assume that was an accurate vision of what would happen. I love those episodes, along with most of Season 6: top notch storytelling. I think, Mel, you have said that one of the themes with Star Wars is ultimately hope. Surely the ending of season 6, when Yoda talks to Obi Wan and Mace about ‘Victory for all time’ followed by the triumphant and beautiful end music and the shot of the tree, is right on point with that theme. However, it seems that victory for all time was a long time coming, when you think of what we now have seen of the future Star Wars universe. Perhaps the end of The Rise of Skywalker got us there? Anyway, I seem to have digressed … The Trandoshans as a species don’t come across too well in the Star Wars universe, do they? Certainly not the ones we have seen, as far as I can remember. It’s interesting to hear comments from the Bad Batch crew this episode to the effect that they wanted to get away from war (I forget the exact comment) - given their avid enthusiasm for fighting in Clone Wars season 7; it’s quite something to realise how jaded they seem to have become with war since order 66. And the Clones this episode were deeply involved in the nastiness unfolding on Kashyyyk, which I find a bit dark and depressing. I love dark music, art and atmospheres quite a lot - my past post punk and Goth phase had never completely left me, it’s more that it has evolved! - but some of the shenanigans this episode, with Gungis capture and what the empire were up to on Kashyyyk, with the help of the Trandoshans, seems less dark and more just grim and bleak. I can’t quite find the right words. But anyway, it’s still a very memorable episode, and it’s a relief that at least one of my favourite Youngling’s is still alive! On dark music, artwork and atmospheres have you come across Myuu on YouTube for dark piano? Beautiful! And often dark! 😁 For example, ‘Tender Remains’ (vocal piano version feat, Sharm). This one is more beautiful than dark - but still a bit dark.

I'm glad you weren't too spoiled but still got to enjoy the surprise during the trailer!!! I hear you about memory, I too have that issue lol! I'm so glad that Gungi made it out too, but it is sad to think that most of those sweet kids probably didn't make it....and I agree, it's even worse to think they died at Anakin/Vader's hands :( I agree, it was a lot like the way Kanan reacted. It must leave quite an impression to suddenly be targeted by the clones like that, as well as seeing your friends being killed by them. Ohhh Katooni was dead in the vision Yoda had!!! I'm not sure if that's exactly what happened but it is probable isn't it. I'm glad you agree about the theme of hope, and I agree with you that it isn't always immediate or in a straight line either - yet it persists! I think Rise of Skywalker could be seen as the ultimate restoration of that hope. Lol the Trandoshans are rarely portrayed in an endearing light lol :P I know, the clones on Kasyyyk did seem more involved, didn't they. Hahah that's awesome, totally not a phase, but now just an evolved aspect!!! The dark atmosphere/music were great. I agree that there was some wholesomeness that made it through too though. So happy that Gungi is okay!! Oh I haven't come across any Myuu videos actually! I'll need to look that up! I too had my goth/emo era in my teens that never truly left me haha, so I'm sure I'd enjoy it! Thanks!
