Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to RWBY Vol. 9, ep 5!!!! Dang, for an episode about parfaits, this one got pretty DARK!!!! The scene with the person forging weapons was really otherworldly and disturbing....lots of weird imagery that I'm still trying to dissect! Everyone's back to full size which is great, but all heck is breaking loose in the Ever After thanks to Neo!!! And since we know this is the only kind of death that the citizens here can really experience...um, yeah, they're all really dying :( But it turns out you guys were all right - a mysterious knight came to save us, and it did turn out to be Jaune!! And he's aged considerably?!?!?!? Just what is going on here?!?!?! I can't wait to find out!!! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) I hadn't thought about it yet, but in the end we're really lucky, because we have two RWBY days thanks to you, Saturday when it comes out and Tuesday for your reaction lol In the forge she first took Penny's weapon, then Alyx's to finish with Summer's, her mother. The three indicate choices she can make about who she wants to be or was, Penny was a kind-hearted warrior fighting for justice, Alyx a fairy tale heroine, Summer a huntress who fought Salem... Besides, with the appearance of Summer's weapon, someone on Twitter made an interesting link, Ruby is the little red riding hood, Maria is the grandmother, the hound is the big bad wolf and Summer is the lumberjack, her weapon being an axe. All silver-eyed warriors are characters from Little Red Riding Hood. Ruby giving the symbol of her mother is heartbreaking, but continues her descent to initiate her rebirth, since she separates little by little from elements linked to her past, first Crescent Rose, her role as huntress, the link with her mother. Everything that defines her. For the jabberwalker and Neo, it's because when he disappears after Yang's attack, it looks like Neo using her Semblance to change her appearance. The attacking jabberwalkers are probably clones of Neo transformed into jabberwalkers. Well despite the emotional charge of this episode, the fans of Whiterose had a little comfort, because Weiss heading to Ruby before escaping and Ruby taking Weiss's hand to comfort her at the end, it was enough to make us happy hehe. For Jaune aged and being the rusted knight, I think it's like the cat said, people find their purpose and Jaune's purpose has always been to be a hero, a knight. I think that's what happened to Jaune, the herbalist or someone else helped him become what he is now. And then in the end, the rusted knight comes with a rabbit-like mount, so I'm guessing that's their version of Alice's White Rabbit, I wasn't wrong. I wasn't too wrong either, even if it wasn't "What the F", there was the "what?" discovering Jaune new look lol.

The Jabberwalker desolved like Neo's illusions normaly do. But what is new is that team RWBY had to hit it multiple times and the Jabberwalker could talk

Imagine what must be going through Weiss's mind when she sees "warrior's wolftail kinda guy" Jaune: If he fell, the relics and Winter's fate are even more in question than before. He knows more of what happened with Penny than perhaps she wanted to share. If he's been there for years, how much time has passed on Remnant? If he's been there that long, is it even possible to leave the Ever After? That's before she even considers how he could have shown up in Alyx's story that they read when they were kids. I'm sure a lot of their questions, and ours (including some of this week's fan theories) will be answered next chapter. But as we head into the second half of the season, I expect we'll be dealing even more with the personal issues our characters face.

Darren

Regarding the weapons i feel they project the image of the wielder, Penny an her Sword Aleks and her knife and what i am guessing is the axe is Summer Roses, i dont believe that was Ruby in the weapon but i do believe it was Summer Rose, i may be reaching here but thats what my intial thought was xxx

Darren

What with the clock in the intro with Jaune where its on 11, what if maybe one minute equaled one year so what if hes been there for 60 years then again it would make him roughly 77 or 79 maybe, he looks younger then that, again i am grasping at straws lol it wasnt long after Weiss fell he fell so gosh knows, this world is making my brain mushy lol and he called his GoatStead Jnpr :)

Before I get into my comment, I should note that I noticed neither this reaction or your MHA reaction were embedded but RvB was? Was that a slip or are you going back to the old format? Okay, /cracks knuckles, here I go again… Let’s start with what the cat said to the girls. “I’m glad the four of you are still the four of you.” Apparently, whenever a purpose is fulfilled, or if it isn’t, or someone is broken, they get “returned” to the Ever After and repurposed. The biggest example here would be the Red Prince. The king played an honorable game against Alyx and lost, and he took it so hard that he was sent back and made into the Prince: whose goal now is to play win the game at any cost, no matter what. The cat said Herb’s heart was too weak to be called back, so they gave him a little bit of theirs. He will be remade into something befitting the purpose he wanted to achieve, yet he’ll have no memory of his previous form. After all, what would be the point in that? The reason that the Prince reacted so negatively to finding out about the humans is the heart doesn’t forget so easily. Remember, she lied and cheated through most of the book. Now, the cat said all this which confused Blake as it wasn’t in the story. To which the cat replied, “Of course not! Exposition is terribly boring!” Which means this is coming into play somehow. A person who feels they can’t fulfill their purpose… A person who’s broken… A person who needs to remake themselves because of everything that’s happening to them… You see where I’m going with this, don’t you? There’s a certain character, that is currently checking off all of these boxes one by one… and they wear a red hood. At some point soon, my theory is Ruby is going to get repurposed by this place. Do you remember what her alter ego said to her? “You don’t even have to be Ruby Rose!” Not exactly a pleasant thought, is it… but the breadcrumbs are there. Speaking of that something has been bugging me for a couple of episodes. I realize we’ve had a lot to deal with… but seriously, none of Ruby’s teammates have picked up on just how bad her mental and emotional state is at the moment? You’d think at least one person would catch on but it’s been going on for a while now. While we’re in the subject, it seems that Ruby’s traumatic moments in this volume so far seem to be happening only when Little is sleeping. To be fair, Little is sleeping a LOT. But do you believe in coincidences on this show after all this time? Speaking of, the scene with the blacksmith was very eerie. First, it’s not the VA, but the inflections and tone reminded me a lot of Salem. Also, when she took the Penny sword she was told “no one is ever truly lost.” What did she mean by that? My theory is no one is truly gone as long as someone is there to remember them… because I think any other option would kind of defeat the weight of previous events. Anyway, the reason they showed Penny in the blade was to establish ownership - that this is her weapon. Then when the blacksmith commented on her burden, she said she was fine. Girl, I’ve said for ages, FINE is short for freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional. But when she started the conversation she held Penny’s blade, and then it changed into Alyx’s dagger because we saw her reflection in it. Then she looked at the scythe-like weapon on the wall. And Summer Rose was reflected off it. The blacksmith is currently giving her the option to set down her burden and pick any one of “these,” assuming they’re talking about the weapon. But she’s “fine,” for now… but I’m thinking this is more fuel for my theory that Ruby is going to be changed and repurposed. It should also be noted that the weapon the blacksmith is forging appears to be caterpillar like and have butterfly wings, which might be a sign that this is the process of Herb being reforged as they speak. Either way she suddenly snaps out of it and everyone else seems to think she’s daydreaming: Weiss just shows exasperation, but it seems like o says earlier, that nobody has picked up on Ruby’s true mental state. While bargaining for the nose hairs, the fireworks suddenly spout “Danger!” and the Jabberwalker attacks… and the cat reveals anyone who is eaten by it cannot ascend or be repurposed. I can’t take credit for this, and Crunchyroll is having a helluva time with turning on subtitles for the English audience, but someone said just before it attacked it said “Found them!” and headed straight for the crew. Remember that bird salesman who was selling mud cookies in the marketplace? They attack the Jabberwalker with blue streams emanating from their eyes, kind of maiden-like. The cat says they “gave him something new to do.” So… the cat can change someone’s purpose in this world if they want to… this has all sorts of disturbing implications. But WBY are finally able to get big thanks to the arrival of the Rusted Knight… and Blake starts fangirling… which reminded me of the tone in Chibi when she was about to meet her favorite author and it turned out to be Zwei. But anyway, the Jabberwalker isn’t taken down without a precise combo attack, and… then it shattered into pink rectangles reminiscent of, as Blake observes, Neo. But then several MORE Jabberwalkers show up, and the knight exclaims “there’s only supposed to be one!” Let’s think back: when last we saw Neo, she was creating multiple clones of herself… this place has powered her up enough she’s cloning Jabberwalkers - which are the bane of this world’s existence. This might be a problem. For now, everyone runs… The garden is burning and Weiss can’t help but notice the parallels even though this time it’s not really their fault… and I keep thinking about that line Sun said to them in V2… “We usually hang out with you, which means stuff is always exploding and junk… we wanted to see the kingdom when it was, you know, normal.” Foreshadowing again. Anyway they enter the lotus flower on top of the garden and the knight calls his steed Junioer, then he takes his helmet off… and is wearing Pyrrha’s sash as a hair tie, kind of like Penny’s bow. It’s Jaune… but he looks much older and he simply says… “Team RWBY… you finally made it.” Okay, first time and the order they fall in has previously been established as irrelevant. The order was: Yang, Neo, Ruby and Blake, Weiss, and then Jaune. Yet Ruby and Neo fell simultaneously. Weiss and Blake found each other first away from Ruby. We have no point of reference for Yang. Neo didn’t land until two chapters after. Is it possible Jaune’s been here for years? That would mean he really was the Rusted Knight in the original story. Has he been repurposed? It doesn’t seem likely… because he recognized RWBY. I have to wonder if we’re in a Chronicles of Narnia situation… don’t know if you’re familiar with it, but without getting too spoilery, I’ll just say there was a similar situation to this, where a whole lifetime of events occurred and yet when people returned only minutes had passed in the real world, along with their age. I’m kinda hoping that’s the case because, hasn’t this poor guy been through enough already? I have one more theory to process regarding Ruby… is she going to get repurposed as Alyx? Based on the intro, and the way she’s walking away from Crescent Rose at the end…? My brain, as usual is going about a zillion places. As Nora so helpfully once put it, “I don’t know if I understand exactly what’s going on or if I have a million questions!” I wrote another book, didn’t I…? Where was this brain when I actually needed to turn on stuff for creative writing…? 😅

John J Ronald

I definitely put 2 and 2 together when I got a look at the Knight's shield as he was shepherding them along the upper level(s). And of course his noble steed is named "Juniper" (JNPR)......Jaune was the last one to fall but has clearly been here the longest....time definitely flows differently here.... This is a world that obeys storybook logic, so if Ruby gets interrupted by a cut scene encounter with the Blacksmith, then that's what happens because it needs to...Penny's sword (she made multiples so it doesn't necessarily need to be the same one kicked away by the Red Prince, but apparently is)...it's in the Blacksmith's shop because it needs to be for the sake of the scene. Ruby sees/learns what she needs to from her interaction with the Blacksmith then gets returned to the flow of after time she came from....I hadn't hit on the gun-axe belonging to Summer Rose but it makes sense and it would be kind of cool for Ruby to take back her Mom's weapon until she can find Crescent Rose. Whoever it was in the projection they were a fellow silver-eyed warrior, and Summer makes the most sense. Weiss definitely feeling depressed and exhausted having borne witness to the Fall of Beacon, the Fall of Atlas, and now watching the Lillypad Pavillion go up in smoke thanks to the Jabberwalker onslaught which was Neo's doing, somehow.

John J Ronald

Jaune/Rusted Knight is also surprised that there's more than one Jabberwalker....there's only supposed to be one, he says.

Quote of the day: I am under no obligation to make sense to you. - Mad Hatter 😵‍💫

kamenriderhime

Oh nice!! The Juniper name was a huge tip-off...also really bittersweet! Yeah I don't know what's going on with time but he's definitely been here awhile. Oh good call about the story logic. That's interesting that it's the same sword as the scenes with the prince. So this is all happening because it needs to...!! Yeah that would be cool if she got her mom's weapon for a bit. My guess would be Summer in the reflection too. I know, haven't they seen enough destruction for one lifetime!!! Ohhh that's a good catch that Jaune is also surprised!

kamenriderhime

Oh wow, I hadn't thought about that with the clock!! Good call. The math doesn't add up but this probably explains why the clock is significant, what with his time having been the longest here. Omg I know haha, it's definitely topsy turvy!! Omg the name, it's so sweet! I agree, he looks 30s something if I had to guess, maybe early 40s???

kamenriderhime

I know, I can't imagine what must be going through her mind! She must be reconsidering how everything went down, including Winter's and the others' fates. Good point about him having lots more very sad details about Penny as well. And this brings up so many questions about time!!!! I'm not even sure!!!! I hadn't even considered that he might be the same White Knight in the story; I guess I kinda thought maybe he took up the mantle once he got here, but if he was the original knight, that brings up tons of other questions!!! I can't wait to get more answers, and like you said, delve into more of the crew's personal issues. Ohhhh!!! There's a great idea for Salem....maybe she'd find new purpose, quite literally, that isn't just destruction of everything???

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Awww yay!! I'm happy to be able to provide the second RWBY day haha! Definitely a lot of symbolism in the scene with the blacksmith in terms of the choices that lie in front of Ruby. WHOA, I never put it together that all silver eyed characters can be linked back to Red Riding Hood, wow! It does seem like she's separating herself from everything that defined her in the past, working her way towards a rebirth. Which hopefully, will be a really good thing that helps her heal and grow! Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up about Neo! I know, there was a little comforting there between Weiss and Ruby, which was nice! Good point about the new role for Jaune, maybe that explains the age as well, or maybe that's something else? Like time passing differently? You were right about the rabbit!!! Lol you were so right, it was a total "what" moment with the twist on Jaune's age!!!!!!!!!!!! :O

PART 2 OF COMMENT: (P.S.) There’s a couple of notes I forgot to point out in my earlier post that I thought of after the fact, so just please consider this an add-on to my original comment - don’t worry about responding until you have time to read the rest of it. :) It seems that Ruby’s giving up of her emblem is causing a bit of a stir in the FNDM, since we now know it’s related to Summer. But nobody would’ve been the wiser if she hadn’t said anything. This is just putting more fuel on the fire of what happened to her… And also, when WBY went to help fight the Jabberwalker the cat pulled Ruby off to the side - because she’s still basically helpless without her weapon after all this time. It might not be a stretch to say she’s been leaning too heavily on it as opposed to herself - another thing that seems to be coming full circle this volume, as she really seems to be in need of support without her trusty garden tool to help her own confidence. What Ruby is going through kind of reminded me of Iida from MHA, remember when he pulled the engines out of his legs so new stronger ones would grow in? It was super painful but he ended up better for it… I think that’s kind of what we’re working on with Ruby right now… she’ll be better in the long run, but there’s going to be a lot of pain and suffering involved to break down her old self before we get there. Okay I think that’s everything… Darn brain wanders a lot. 👀😅

kamenriderhime

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! I posted a comment explaining the format but it probably got lost somewhere since I couldn't make it a pinned comment. The uploads I set for Patreon's video player never went through so I just had to post them old school/Google Drive style or wait several hours for them to re-upload. :P No format change! Yeah, there's definitely a LOT of evidence for the fact that someone is getting "repurposed" here....right down to the line about not being Ruby anymore! Hmm. I'm trying to figure out if this is a good thing / a journey, or a bad thing. Because it seems like it could go either way. Yeah I was kinda thinking of that during the scene where they're like "cmon Ruby, really, what took you so long".....doesn't seem like they've really noticed how broken she is. I could see the Salem-ish qualities of the Blacksmith's voice for sure. That makes sense about each weapon reflecting their owner, and how this was an option to set down her burden and pick up another weapon for a bit. Fine could not be further from fine lol! Oh interesting note about the weapon being forged likely belonging to the new and improved Herb! Oh, that's a crazy note about the cat being able to randomly change people's purposes, wow! HAHAHAHAHA it was totally like when Blake met her favorite author and it was Zwei, omg!!! I know, it's sad to think they're watching everything get destroyed again. Ohhh good note about Pyrrha's sash!! Yeah I'm not sure what's going on with the timing, I kinda assumed Jaune took over for the original knight but it would explain the age a lot more if he'd actually landed earlier and was the knight from the story. I can see the Narnia similarities for sure! OMG, I've been wondering what Ruby's connection to Alyx could possibly be. Yikes!! Haha I relate to Nora here. I know, it was sad about the rose wasn't it. Good point about the over-reliance on the semblance too. Oh yeah, good reference to the Iida situation, I could see that for sure!! Good thoughts here :) Totally worth the read!!!! Thanks!

Nathan Poulain Cigrand

Are we already at the halfway point? Damn that's going fast! I'm gonna go heal my ears after your scream near the end ^^ Still loved your reaction, and I'll watch the next one as soon as I can....boy, something tells me I won't be dissapointed xD See you later :)

kamenriderhime

Yeah I believe it's only 10 eps! LOL sorry about your ears :P Thank you! Oh wow, I hope you love my next reaction to, it was such a big ep!!!! Thanks!! ^_^

2023-03-31 02:48:52 I love this episode. I think the best word to describe last episode is enlightening. Basically in the Ever After it is very easy for people’s forms to change. I think if WBY had been unable to face themselves they could have changed into something entirely different. I like how Weiss takes a breath to calm down but is then immediately intensely angry at Curious for ditching them LOL. And we get the 1st mention of returning to the Ever After which is a very interesting concept. Yeah it’s confusing but if you read between the lines you can mostly understand what Curious is talking about even with their confusing language. This is just getting across that how things work in Remnant does not translate to the EA and you have to think differently in this world because of how different it is. I like that before 1 of their jumps they shake their butt it’s cute. This marketplace in the middle of the lake is beautiful with the colors & nighttime atmosphere as well as the giant flower at the top. I like that the way to get to the marketplace is with Lily pad boats instead of a bridge or something because it continues to give this place its own unique identity. The gentle look Ruby has as she helps Blake & Weiss back into her hood is so wholesome. I love learning more about this world in this episode with the whole ascension thing. It’s like a death but not more like a reincarnation cycle which is super interesting with how it’s another thing that emphasizes how important purpose is in this world. It’s interesting how they can be the same as before or different depending on what will best serve their purpose. I like how disgusted Curious seems to be about death. Ascension is probably why they think Ozpin’s reincarnation isn’t good because it’s 2 souls in one body instead of 1 soul. Also the light fixtures in the marketplace are cool & pretty. I like that the music here until the blacksmith is whimsical but relaxing. I want to point out the bird is named Hawker and they are hawking their wares Yang would be proud of that wordplay/pun LOL. It’s interesting that the king became worse after Ascension because it is a way for him to accomplish his purpose better. I like that this episode shows that there are a lot of magical creatures like dragons and leprechauns in this world in addition to everything else with all the ingredients. I think the little plant/leaf person in the market is adorable. Cats are easily distractible so it’s hilarious that the girls have to go with Curious as chaperones LOL. The way the blacksmith’s hammering slowly becomes more apparent is unnerving. The way things slowly disappear around Ruby reminds me of a scene from the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland & I would not be surprised if something like this was in the book as well. The entire blacksmith scene is so intriguing but unsettling. I love their voice because it feels gentle/soothing to me. I love their design so much with the blank eyes, being all metallic and their “hair” being chains. Also I think they are empty with the way their voice echoes. This stuff with all the weapons in my opinion will be important for Ruby’s journey and how important purpose is here. An interesting idea is that this blacksmith was the carpenter that Weiss mentioned before an ascension. At the least they can sense people’s internal conflict/issues or things they push down because they mentioned Ruby’s burdens. And of course Ruby just says she’s fine and can handle all of her problems on her own which is more of her unhealthy habits. The blacksmith forging what looks like a butterfly might be the herbalist’s new form which would indicate they have something to do with the ascension process which I have seen some people say. These weapons either represent people who have been or still are in the EA or are manifestations of what is on someone’s mind/their problems like Ruby with Penny and her mother as well as her problems. Also I think choosing a new weapon is another way for her to change into something else. I think this is actually Summer’s weapon an axe gun with how Ruby reacts which brings up a very interesting thing that all of the Silver eyed warriors allusions are from little red riding hood. Ruby is little red riding hood, Maria is the grandmother, the hound is the big bad Wolf and now Summer represents the Huntsman. The person in the reflection is most likely an older version of Ruby based on her mom since the person she most wants to be a version of herself that always knows what to do and saves everyone. And it makes sense that it would manifest like this since she associates strength the most with her mother. This situation happened but not physically at least this time since I think it will happen again. 1 of the girls should have gone with her considering they have been noticing something is wrong and been more attentive here but in their defense this was just shopping, Ruby said nothing about the blacksmith & the girls are distracted by being small. The way she apologizes while rubbing her arm is just sad to see. I like how the personality of cats with Curious just knocking stuff over. The fireworks saying danger once the Jabberwalker appears is a nice detail. Seeing Ruby give up something of herself with the emblem is upsetting/depressing especially if it was the last thing her mom gave her before she never came back. She has had it somewhere on her outfit in the entire show as well. The fact that this thing can permanently kill residents of the EA is scary. I don’t like how Curious can forcibly change someone’s purpose here shown with the bird guy it’s a little morally ambiguous even if it was to help the girls. It was short but it’s cute that when the girls got a little bigger it was like Ruby was holding some plushies. I love how Jaune arrived as the hero and once he sees the girls he noticeably reacts as a hint to who this was in addition to the sword. I love the design of his Jackalope mount. I thought the fight was great especially the team work of the girls. With this song Casey was totally channeling her dad. And then we learn that Neo can create much more durable clones that can talk and most likely have the personalities of who she is making which is terrifyingly powerful and could lead to some Roman stuff perhaps? Hopefully the EA doesn’t consider her clones the same as the real Jabberwalker or that bird guy is dead. And then we see them trying to deal with the trauma of always leaving places in ruins and the sad thing is the more they go through stuff like this the more desensitized they become. And now to talk about that Jaune reveal which is crazy. So many people thought this was the case but no one expected him to have aged up so much. It’s so sad but heartwarming that he named his steed Juniper & is using part of Pyrrha’s sash as a hair tie. I can’t even imagine what he must have gone through if he has been here for 20 to 30 years by himself. At least he recognizes the girls. I like how Blake seems to be a fan girl of the Knight from the story so is the most shocked. Also it’s hilarious that Weiss’s reaction is basically of course this is happening why not? LOL. What a place to end the episode. So much intrigue I really enjoyed your thoughts on this episode. Awesome reaction & discussion. :-) <3

I love this episode. 2023-04-10 18:04:28 Yeah it's a great one! It really is like getting used to a whole new world. It is interesting to learn more, including about the life/death cycle (even though it's not exactly death), and it makes sense that it would emphasize purpose in the world, since that seems to be a big deal here! That's a good point about Ozpin too! LOL yes Yang would be proud! It is interesting that ascension doesn't necessarily make one "better" in the traditional sense, but rather just repurposes them to be better suited to what they want to do. The cat distraction thing is hilarious lol. That's interesting about the correlation to the scene from Alice in Wonderland! Yeah I agree that the blacksmith has something to do with the whole repurposing process. That's so cool about the little red riding hood comparisons!! And I agree about the weapon situation, especially in light of where we're at currently. Good point that she didn't mention the blacksmith, honestly I don't think she's in any position to open up about what's going on with her, which could have something to do with it. Hahaha the cat knocking stuff over is pretty amazing lol! I know, I was so sad to see her give up the rose!! Yes, Casey was totally channeling her dad!!! I really hope we get to see Roman as a result of Neo's new abilities. I know, seeing Jaune this way was a big surprise!!! Pyrrha's sash <3 Lol Weiss!! Thank you so much and sorry it took me forever to respond!!!! Have a great day!!!! ^_^
