Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to RWBY Vol. 9, ep 4!!!!  We get to spend more time with our new kitty friend, and honestly I wasn't sure quite where they stood until later on in the ep!  One thing's for sure though, they're definitely a RWBY fan now haha!  We also get to meet the Herbalist and go on some self-reflective journeys.  It was great to see our gang be so steadfast in what they believed about themselves and the world!!  With the exception of Ruby, who's so lost and broken right now!  :(  I truly believe she will find herself throughout the course of this season!  It's just hard to watch her struggle, you know?  Sounds like we have more characters to meet, in addition to catching up with Neo and Jaune at some point.
Can't wait!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

What wouldnt we give to be happy again without trying?? Not alot to say from me on this one. Other than that it's so sad that Ruby used to be the one so sure of who she was, what they were fighting for and who she wanted to be as a Huntress, but now she's not. Because she isnt the idealized version of a huntress (or a leader) that she had in her head that she tried so hard to live up to. I feel once she learns that she's allowed to make mistakes and not always know what to do, and that she can lean on her friends more than maybe she'll be able to allow herself to seek help and heal. V1 Ruby: "I've always wanted to be just like the heroes in the books! Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves." V1 Blake: "that's very ambitious for a child...unfortunately the real world isnt the same as a fairytale.." V1 Ruby: "that's why we're here to make it better." V9 Blake to Herb: "Huntresses are heroes. We protect others who can't protect themselves!" V9 Ruby: "...but life isnt the same as a fairytale." Hallucination Ruby: "that's right. It's up to YOU to make things better." It is, however, very worrying that she seemed to actually be considering giving up who she is. But its understandable as well. The other girls monologues were fantastic! I love how far each of them have come! From Yang who always struggled with feeling like something in her life was missing (whether it was her mothers love or her literal arm) now saying if she's missing something it isnt because she's lost it, its because she hasn't found it yet. To Blake saying to abandon everything that makes her who she is isnt simplicity but betrayal when she use to run away from parts of her life. And Weiss, god, Weiss's was so good! She has the legacy of her grandfather, she has the tainted legacy of her father and yet she has no kingdom or title to her name anymore. She no longer just wants to redeem the name Schnee in the sense of making up for her fathers sins or to honor her grandad, she now wants to offer it a new meaning - and that meaning will be whatever SHE makes it. I adore all of Team RWBY and wish only for good things to happen to them (even though I know they still have quite a bit to struggle through). Wonderful reaction as always! This episode was fantastic and a wonderful look at how far our girls have progressed (WBY) and regressed (Ruby) in a sense. See ya for next ep! Hope you have a good day/night!

Hi Hime :) Ever after is about purpose, about what we are, so ideal for understanding ourselves. And for the moment, they seem to have gone through situations similar to what they have already experienced, to relive them to see what they were and have become, which has helped them to grow. Whether it's getting back what was taken from them, mourning a friend, facing a leader who makes his own rules, being asked who or what they are. All this, they already know. But if some came out of it grown, it also broke Ruby... The phrase "you can also be something other than Ruby Rose", makes me think, especially if Jaune has become the Rusted Knight, that Ruby will become Alyx. The juxtaposition of the two in the intro would then make even more sense. She wouldn't necessarily change her appearance, but living this adventure that made Alyx grow, would also allow her to grow.

I love a show where characters grow and change; it happens so much in real life. I recently watched your MHA 1x01 reaction, and I wonder what the you from just 4 years ago would say to you now. So far this is turning out to be RWBY at its dramatic best, though I'd love to see the characters get to just sit down and sort of process things together. (I understand their desire to get to the tree quickly, of course, but they all need some saw-sharpening time before they get back to chopping.) Speaking of which, I'm really curious how they'll get Crescent Rose back after traveling so far from their landing spot.

I feel like it was a positive (if grueling) experience for Weiss, Yang and Blake. They faced down their younger, shadow selves and affirmed their current state of being. Ruby on the other hand is confronted by her young, naive self and is too broken to counter her inner monologue. She just wasn't ready for this step, unlike her Teammates.

This is the second time the Curious Cat "touched the heart" of a character and made them take a step back and reconsider...made them kinder. Interesting.

John J Ronald

The Curious Cat bringing up Ciel is kinda funny because it feels like CRWBY is gently trolling FNDM a little for Ciel-Stans constantly bugging them about what happened to her....

John J Ronald

My own head-canon is that Ciel was re-assigned to Vacuo as some kind of Atlesian military liaison to the Atlas diplomatic mission to Vacuo....ostensibly a promotion but actually a completely crap assignment and Ironwood's backhanded way of punishing Ciel for allowing what happened to Penny to occur on her watch. I'm hoping we get to see Ciel coordinating Atlas Refugees and their resettlement in Vacuo. Winter will have to break it to Ciel what ultimately happened to Penny.

Well, here I go again - there’s no telling how long this comment thread is going to be by the time I finish but let’s just get going… kinda like you when you’re pressing play LOL. First, this is hands down my favorite chapter of the volume so far. There’s several groups in the FNDM that keep remarking that Weiss and Yang’s relationship reminds them of a a divorced couple who ended up friends afterwards, and it’s kind of hilarious. Also, should point out Weiss makes a crack about the cat and Yang gives her a “thumbs up” - which is the exact opposite of what happened after they fought Roman in Volume 2 and she said her joke “wasn’t very good.” When the cat detects Little, Blake appeals to it saying she needs a minute, and the cat seems to take this as Little is “spoken for,” or perhaps they assume Blake has laid claim to her lunch, but they back off. So basically Team RWBY had to tell the cat what happened over eight volumes to keep its attention. Speaking of which, first there’s the crack at Oscar, but there’s a very deliberate shot being taken in the cat’s dialogue. “Did that Ciel character from the Vytal Festival ever come back in a notable way?” In case you don’t remember, Ciel was Penny’s handler and was always timing e writhing down to the second (“It’s been precisely one minute, ma’am!”) There’s a particular RWBYTuber, MurderOfBirds, who is kind of like the ringleader of all the RWBY reactors - I mentioned his livestream discussions to you a couple weeks ago. He has been harping about where this character is FOR YEARS. So that was a direct shot at him. CRWBY is watching… “So many different characters to keep track of…” I mean, they’re not wrong! We’re having our hands full just with the main four this season. Weiss mentions that she wishes they could’ve met the lively carpenter or the rusted knight instead of the cat. One was sweet and the other was handsome, she said. Now based on what I’ve seen from the opening, I have a theory. I know I playfully tease you about your ship on a regular basis, but I do have mine as well, which is White Knight (Weiss/Jaune) and I kind of NEED this to happen the more I think about it. The Rusted Knight needs to turn out to be Jaune - not just because I want it to be, but… can you imagine how much fun Yang will have holding that over Weiss after she finds out who the “handsome” guy is? There’s just too much fun potential involved in this scenario. The cat mentioned RWBY need a grogurt parfait to become large again, and that they shouldn’t talk to anyone in the forest without them. And of course, then they depresses everyone thinking about Salem, and they lose sight of them. So the first thing they do is talk to a stranger. What were you just told? The Herbalist, I’m gonna just call him Herb because the cat did, keeps asking what are you? Roles are very important in this world and the team is getting impatient with that question but Herb is equally so because they don’t seem to think it’s important. But in order to get to where you’re going you must understand where you are now. He also says “this is how a king becomes a prince.” Was he referring to the Red Prince? That being said, taking an invitation into a strange being’s mushroom house where you end up being drugged on hallucinogens is why people shouldn’t talk to strangers, kids. But I digress. What’s interesting here is every one of the visions that face the team are an alternate version of themselves from V1 if they chose to go different ways. If they decided to do things the easy way. Yang used to think she was invincible - but what she’s had yo go through has developed her character in quite a different way than she thought - but it’s also part of who she is. She may have lost a physical part of herself - but it’s made her a stronger and smarter person. Blake has had to carry quite a bit even if she wasn’t asked to because it was important to her to do so. It would be easy to just stay in the shadows and live quietly, but that’s not what she’s all about. She’s done too much for her subspecies and their place in the world to back off now. Okay, you know this: Weiss is absolutely my favorite character in the show, so I’m already biased. Her V1 self was not very likable but you understand her a lot more as the show reveals everything she’s carrying. The burden of her family name, and what she’s expected to live up to. After Ice Queendom that got even more pronounced. So to hear her pop off with an answer like THAT? I got literal chills. She used to be defined by her name, but as she’s repeatedly tried to impress on people, she’s so much more than that. She’s writing her own definition. I mean if you weren’t already a member of her fan club, you have to be applying after that speech right? I mean, talk about dropping the mic. That isn’t just the best moment if the volume, that’s one of the best moments in the entire series. So all three of them are steadfastly believing they’re full fledged Huntresses… and then we cut to Ruby… who can’t even look at her Volume 1 self. “So… ARE you a Huntress?” I’ll point out that you’re talking about V2C8 and there’s a lot of parallels that go straight back as you said. Only this time it’s a mirror, and Ruby is the one that needs to find an answer. Her teammates have theirs. In the behind the scenes video that came out today, Ruby’s VA said that “Ruby hasn’t stopped to look at her own problems, so the world is going to make her.” And speaking of Ruby’s issues, they’re pretty much what I expected… she’s carrying everything and she’s been hiding it. No, I don’t think her personality is a lie at all - she really is a hopeful person. But everything has been piling on her ever since she became leader and she’s trying to hold it all up by herself. Or at least she feels she has to. And then finding out Salem can’t be destroyed, and worse, she’s responsible for Summer’s demise (at some point we have GOT to address that) - and then the destruction of Atlas and Penny’s death lead her to repeat the line Blake told her in V1 - “Life isn’t like a fairy tale.” It’s almost cruel that the person spouting all those thoughts at her is Beacon Arc Ruby who was nothing but optimistic before all this got thrown on her. Like you said in V2, Ruby was the only one completely sure what she wanted to do and the others all had questions - but now the shoe is on the other foot. There’s something interesting during this scene - as each character is giving their response they draw their weapon towards their alter ego. If you recall what Ruby said way back in V1, their weapons are extensions of themselves. So WBY all have full grasp of who they are and are extending it to show their resolve. Ruby doesn’t have her weapon. She is currently unable to do this. Another reason why her conversation is going so much differently. Interestingly enough, I think it’s safe to say that Weiss, Blake and Yang are not who they are now without Ruby’s influence in their life. She’s been pretty integral to their growth. Now I’m thinking - if Ruby is going to come to terms with her current self, she is going to need them to support her for once. She has to accept the fact that she not only can’t do all of this by herself, she also doesn’t have to. Side note: the VAs are killing it because they’re playing both sides of their character and they really do sound different. But also the same. It’s very interesting hearing Atlas Arc character versions talk to Beacon Arc characters versions. When the cat interrupts them, Herb says “that’s a bit much…” - he was probably talking about the smoke, but he could also be talking about the effect it had on the girls, or how long this comment is getting… What’s the deal with the cat and the heart giving? He did it to the Prince to calm him down and to Herb this chapter… right before he… disappeared into the ground? Is the cat this world’s version of Salem or something? I’m still suspicious of what that cat is up to… Anyway, I swear there was so much to unpack in this chapter that I was kind of dumbfounded when it ended… that didn’t feel like eighteen minutes… sheesh. If we’ve got this many theories in the air now I’m afraid what my comments will look like by the end of the volume… 😂 Oh, and also, just to reiterate… Weiss is the true QUEEN. Was there ever any doubt about it? I’m sure I’ll be writing another essay next week. But I’ll submit this one for grading and call it a night. 😎

The simpler but darker explanation is that Ciel was one of the many casualties from the Fall of Beacon and didn't survive.

John J Ronald

If Ciel is in Vacuo, perhaps she's learned to mellow out and not be such a stickler for protocols, etc. The Vacuo populace probably disabused her of the notion such rigidity was serving her well.

Manny

Yes this is definitely feeling like a Ruby growing journey

kamenriderhime

Yes! I think it was overall positive. Ruby was definitely not in the right place for this though!

kamenriderhime

Yes! I agree! And wow, that's a great question.....I'll have to think about that one! I agree that this is some good drama they're building. Great metaphor too! Not sure about Crescent Rose....for all we know, someone else has it or it landed in a place where we'll stumble upon eventually! It's hard to say. Can't wait to see what they do next though!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Right, it's all starting to make sense! True that they've been through this before, and have come out of it stronger, but Ruby hasn't quite faced it all head on and come out the other side yet. Oh, good theory about Ruby becoming Alyx! Maybe by doing a bit of role playing, she can learn something??

Supermonaman

I love this episode so, so much. I was hoping for an excited, emotional reaction and you delivered. I think it was obvious this would be an emotional and soul-searching journey for Ruby but this episode basically confirms it. Apparently to get into the Ruby voice back in the early volumes Lindsay said the word kitty in silly voices so it’s a fun coincidence that the start of this episode had her saying kitty over and over. And with this episode I can talk more about why I love the Curious Cat’s design so much. I love how amorphous and malleable their body is and how they seem to be able to manipulate their body at will even being able to able to float/fly. Things that don’t conform to normal physics are so interesting to watch and really creative as well. Although according to the animators the distinct way they are designed made It difficult to animate but I hope the animators are happy knowing how much everyone is loving the design. I like how it’s dialogue is cryptic & mysterious much like the original Cheshire Cat. And it’s interesting that there is a more literal meaning to things in this world. The cat saying that it can go to the tree when others can’t implies to me that there is something more special about the Cat than other characters in the Ever After most likely because of whatever its own role in this world is. I think them saying the tree goes to you probably means it somehow won’t let you leave until you have gone on a journey and are completely sure in your convictions/who you are at least that is a theory going around. The 6 inches tall joke is great. I think when Yang was complimenting Weiss’s insult towards the cat it was half sincere and half sarcastic but I love how proud Weiss was LOL. Little hiding under Yang’s hair is so cute. I like that Curious thought Blake had claimed Little as her meal because of course a cat would think that. The butt approaching joke in my opinion is the funniest & best joke in the show and that is saying something. It’s funny that to get Curious’s attention Ruby is basically just going look something shiny and like actual cats Curious is immediately interested. The fact that they had to tell Curious the entire story up to this point is kind of crazy with how much information that is. I love how exhausted Yang & Blake are like a married couple that is learning to take care of their 1st baby <3. I don’t think self referential humor would work in most shows like was done in this episode but it does here especially with the context of Curious being so curious and telling them the entire story. Interesting that Curious is basically saying Alyx was more concerned with herself than others. Seeing what the Garden looks like makes you realize how much effort was put into making every area of this place as distinct as possible at least so far it’s impressive. I’m glad we got confirmation from Curious that everyone in this world has a role and every acre is made for them specifically. Looking at the beautiful leaves is the 1st really genuine smile we have seen from Ruby in a while. The grow yogurt has to be a reference to the snack gogurt for kids since this show is made in America. It’s also a reference to food making you get big or small in Alice in Wonderland. I think her doubts about stopping Salem has been in the back of her mind for a while Curious just brought it to the forefront. There are a lot reasons I think it would be interesting if Jaune was the rusted Knight with what it could do for his character/story but also because I want to see Weiss’s face when she realizes she unintentionally called him handsome LOL. The Herbalist’s Humming is a little unnerving. Their design is incredible though don’t you think? I love it. And I really like the more rough voice. Curious told them not to talk to anyone but then they immediately did just that. I think everyone needs help in this world because of whatever chaos Alyx seems to have caused in this world. It says a lot about her headspace that Blake confidently says what a huntress is and Ruby does not. The are you good huntresses question must have hit Ruby particularly hard. Also once again the herbalist emphasizes that knowing who & what you are is important in this world and I think it will be important for the girls going forward when they go home. They also imply the Prince was the king and most likely regressed from not knowing those answers probably also because of Alyx. They were not subtle with the drug/getting high thing since a bunch of the things in the inner room were bongs. I don’t have a problem with people getting high but I do have a problem with stranger danger like this. I think Blake potentially knew where this was going from the book and was like I don’t want to get high now thanks LOL. All the colors when the herbalist asks the 1st question were so pretty. I love these introspective moments with them talking to their younger selves. I think the younger versions represent doubts, feelings they have/had/parts of themselves they may not be proud of seeing taking easy paths and what they used to be like as their weakness. Instead of how their younger selves present the responsibility/failures as something bad. I love how Yang’s moment is all about her weakness/failures & in particular her disability. This is great representation of a character with a disability for those with disabilities. I have a disability but it’s different than hers so I wasn’t able to understand that on 1st watch but I really see it now. I love that kind of representation having a disability myself. I love that she can now see that her failures made her stronger. I love that Blake is focused so much on her family, friends (potential girlfriend) and race because it’s what she has been fighting for so long. What they did for her is what helps her to come to these conclusions. Yang’s moment is my favorite because she’s 1 of my favorite characters but Weiss’s is the most hard hitting because she is 1 of the most well written characters in the show. I love how her moment is all about her legacy and who she is. The dialogue is awe-inspiring seeing the nuance of her family ties and deciding what her name means for herself and no one else. Also in the past there probably was a part of her that wanted to be free but because of her experiences that is gone or maybe has found a new way of being free. I love how for different reasons and in different ways they all resolve to keep moving forward. This was so inspiring, uplifting and empowering her the 3 of them that I knew it would go to Ruby and be the opposite. It’s so sad that she is in such a hopeless and unsure place. It’s different as well as with the other 3 they and their younger selves were both standing and the younger selves were talking more positively or at least as equals. On the other hand younger Ruby is standing and talking down to her while present Ruby is on her knees & can’t respond to/refute what her other self is saying. This is all her insecurities, doubts & trauma given physical form so I think it makes sense that it’s hostile & mocking. I think the you have to fight forever and ever line hit the hardest for me. The echo effect was obvious but there was also an unnerving/unsettling and disturbing static effect going on. I love how the weapons were integrated into this with the 3 of them having their weapon and Ruby not having hers. It’s mind blowing that the voice actors are doing the older and younger versions of their characters voices and only then do you realize how different the voices are then compared to now. I don’t think any of their personalities were fake but I do think there were false aspects to them and now they are so much more genuine now except Ruby has not reached that point. The parallels to those talks in volume 2 are so great with Yang, Blake & Weiss knowing exactly who they are now. I think Ruby knew who she was back then and just doesn’t know that now. I think it’s a good thing this was stopped because I think you could become someone or something else depending on the circumstances which might have happened to Jaune. The herbalist might have been saying their emotions were too strong/dangerous or that the drugs were too strong LOL. The looks on their faces says it all about this episode. Also Little is doing their best. Some things I wanted to say is that there is a lot of butterflies shown which might be symbolic of change/metamorphosis. Also even though she could not do much while small when 1 of the frightening things happens Yang goes to protect Blake and Blake looks at Yang subtly a lot this episode <3. This episode has some wondering what the girls would be like if they were actually high and there are some jokes about Ruby having had a bad trip. You said some really poignant/beautiful things in the discussion I really enjoyed it. This was an emotional episode and I don’t think it is going to stop let’s get through 8 together. I can’t wait for the next episode. Sorry for the long comment. There is just so much to say about this show. Also when I asked about you watching other reactions I meant if you do watch reactions in your off time not reaction to reactions. Awesome reaction and thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Nathan Poulain Cigrand

Well...Weiss dropped the mic this episode, I like the cat for now and I don't know how to feel about the herbalist. And damn Ruby....the callback to volume 02 is interesting for sure, but I hope she won't be too broken after this fairytale trip :/ Loved your reaction, gonna wait for the next one, see you soon :)

Supermonaman

Also I forgot when Curious said the voices were uninspired I think they meant the girls were doing voices for everyone they told Curious about. And I agree with others saying Ruby needs to stop putting everything on her shoulders and rely on others.

kamenriderhime

Ohhhh gotcha, that makes sense! Yes, I think this volume will be about that particular journey with Ruby!

kamenriderhime

Lol yes! Hmm, it's tough to say right now. I know, I just want my poor girl to be okay!! Thank you so much, hope you love my next one!!!

kamenriderhime

I know!!! :/ It is sad! Exactly, she holds herself to an unrealistic standard....an admirable one, but not always realistic. OMG, the similarities in the wording! Such a good point! The line about not being yourself was worrying for sure. I agree about the monologues!!! They've all grown so much!!! They were all great but Weiss' was just so flippin good! Such a good point about new meaning vs. redemption for the Schnee name. I adore them too, I know, I want some good things to happen to them!!! Aww thanks, so happy you enjoyed it! Hope you love my next reaction and have a great one!!!

kamenriderhime

Lol yeah it does a little! I think you've shared your head canon scenario and it makes sense! Maybe they'll bring her back at some point??

kamenriderhime

I love the sentiment on Weiss and Yang's friendship lol! The thumbs up was a nice switch from the last time Weiss made a joke like that. I guess fooling the Cat into thinking Little is "claimed" lunch is one way to keep them safe! Oh I love Murder of Birds!!! I didn't realize the Ciel stuff was directly towards him lol! I keep missing the livestreams sadly! There are a lot of characters lol. Okay so, the first thing I thought of with the knight comment about being handsome, is how funny it would be if it turned out to be Jaune, since way back when he was into her and she did not reciprocate! We all have our ships, nothing wrong with that! Oops, guess the crew didn't listen well about not talking to strangers. Roles do seem to be very important here, and good point about the king to prince comment. LOL this is definitely some stranger danger stuff. Oh that's interesting about the "alternate" visions. The three of them have grown so much and learned about themselves, it was great to see the results of that! But Weiss' moment, holy cow! I don't blame you for getting chills!!!! It was a drop the mic moment for sure! Right, Ruby is shouldering all this weight, and now she's forced to face herself. I definitely think her personality is true too, but after all she's been through, without really being able to process it, well, this is where we end up. That's a great point about the rest of the gang using their weapons during these scenes, and the weapons being an extension of themselves, while Ruby doesn't have hers. She's been so important to their growth!!! I know they're gonna return the favor now that Ruby's the one who's in trouble. Oh I know, the VAs really killed it in this!! Oh I didn't even realize the Cat was talking about the smoke, I thought they were referring to the effect it was having on the girls, particularly Ruby! Good question about the heart giving.....OMG PLEASE NO NOT KITTY SALEM!!! I don't think I can handle it lol!!! But maybe they do have some kind of power over this world. It was a lot for 18 minutes right! Lol Weiss is definitely the Queen! Essay submission accepted, good job lol :)

kamenriderhime

Aww thank you!! And lol the silly kitty voices, aww!! I love it! The Cat's design is really cool and interesting, I can definitely see the influences from the Cheshire Cat but also with their own spin on it! I'm sure it wasn't easy to animate them. OMG Yang's reaction to the joke was so fun, and Weiss reaction to her reaction was amazing lol. Yeah I think you're onto something when it comes to the roles, and the Cat's comments about getting to the tree. Hahaha awww the comparison to a married couple with their first baby for Yang and Blake, I love it!!!! Yeah that's a LOT of info to pack into one discussion with the Cat!!! Hahahah the butt joke was incredible! The comments on how Alyx handled things were interesting for sure, and it was great to see Ruby smile! I immediately thought of gogurt lol!!! And omg, I know, I thought about that with the knight....how funny it would be if she'd just accidentally called him handsome haha. The design was awesome!! Oh I didn't even notice the bongs, good call! I don't either but when it's a bunch of young people with someone they don't know, it definitely makes it more disturbing! Good call about the King to Prince comment, it would be interesting if he'd regressed because he didn't know the answers! The conversations with their past selves was really well done and interesting, and that's so cool about the impact that Yang's handling of her disability has! It's awesome to see them tackle matters like that, and I'm really happy to hear it resonated with you! All the discussions were really well done in that scene and Weiss' was sooo good! It's amazing to see how far they've come but Ruby's current state is really sad to watch! The fight forever line was disturbing, and good point that Ruby's current state of mind was what resulted in the mocking tone. Oh I know, the VAs were killing it here!!! Ohhhh I didn't even pick up on the "too much" comment being about the smoke lol! I thought it was about the effects on the girls, particularly Ruby, but yeah, that makes more sense :P Aw I know, the little moment with Yang/Blake!!! It's the little things! OMG hahaha I can't believe I didn't pick up much on the drug references here, but I'm sure there's lots of guessing about what they'd be like while high lol. I'm so happy you enjoyed my discussion, thank you!! No worries at all, I enjoy reading what you have to say!!! Oh yes, I do watch some reactions in my spare time for sure!!! I have a few that I really like! Thanks for clarifying :) And thanks as always for being so awesome and supportive!! ^_^

John J Ronald

I doubt it. Like I said, I think CRWBY is just poking a little fun with the name drop, specifically at Murder of Birds (one of the OG YouTube RWBY reactors)
