Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to RWBY Vol. 9, ep 3!!!!  Wow, the Red Prince sure was a trip!  There were some great moments for our crew in there though, like getting to watch our crew throw some pieces around that board to a new Casey tune, woohoo!!!  For just a second, I saw Ruby's (and Little's!) resolve again!!!  The way he threw Penny's sword though :O  The Curious Cat did us a solid and helped us get out and get some info.  But then it got distracted, as kitties often do :P  OMG NEO!!!  That poor Jabberwalker....!!!  Cannot wait for more!  Great ep!
Enjoy!  ~ MH

I hate to admit this because this is one of my favorite shows but I am already losing interest in this fairytale

We are a fated to change, and we change a little bit every day. Is that good? Is that bad? Only you can say. This episode was so wonderfully animated! It was such a delight to watch, there are so many little expressions and movements that the girls do here that are just so cool to catch (like Weiss's eye twitching when the Red Prince was yelling at her, Blake smiling at Yang watching her back, etc). And like you said it was so wonderful to see Ruby gain a little bit of her old self again, however, it also seems to be a bit of a crutch at this point. Like if she's presented with a situation that takes her mind off of everything that happened or requires her to be at her full focus she falls back on her hopeful, "we can do it" attitude but the minute they are away from those sorts of things she's back in her own head. That fight was all kinds of epic, the WBY combo was so unexpected but so epic it really took me a minute to calm down after seeing it! (Yang using her semblance whilst wielding Weiss's knights giant sword and Weiss with her Nevermore wings behind her back like a snow angel are images that are printed on my brain now!) I'm also really looking forward to the soundtrack with the songs we've been presented with already! I just know the rest of them will be bangers too! This episode definitely implies some not-so-great stuff about Alyx, I wonder if she has already through the story and done things, what else has she exactly affected and how else that will affect our girls going forward. Speaking of, its so wild to think about how actually almost utterly defenseless our girls are now, like Ruby doesn't have her weapon and can only rely on her semblance so much in a fight before her aura runs out, and Yang, Weiss and Blake are the size of Little so they can't exactly help right now... I wonder how they'll resolve that. The Curious Cat seems really cool, so I really hope he doesn't end up being not cool. Poor Jabberwalker haha getting beat up by a bunch of Neos. I'm still sort of mixed on whether I believe that was Neo's semblance evolving due to her desire for revenge on Ruby and Cinder, or if that was just the Ever After reacting to the use of Neo's semblance the way that it reacts to Ruby's emotions. Either way, both are interesting. Can't wait for the next episode and I can't wait to watch it with ya! I'm honestly really enjoying this volume and what its done and look forward to where its going! Hope you have a good day/night and see ya next time!

Hi Hime :) I told you you would see red, I didn't lie, red was very prominent in this episode lol. I listened to and read the lyrics to the theme, Inside, and many of the lyrics evoke introspection and self-discovery. The chorus is : -Inside -A new me, I'm ready -But who will I find ? -Inside - I've gotta let go but could I lose my mind ? So clearly, it sounds like a volume where Ruby is going to have to find herself. Well the lyrics also evoke her depressive state, her rejection of a world that hurt her and her desire to be happy without going through all that... Which makes me wonder if Ruby doesn't end up wanting to live in this world instead of going back to where she came from. Either way, you can see the love CRWBY put into this episode. Whether it's the choreography, the camera movements, the very lively animation, the sets, RWBY is top of the line. Small detail, but Ruby who worries for her friends hoping that they are not hurt, whereas she knows that they are competent, it shows how much Penny's death touched her. If Penny, become a maiden and as powerful as she is, ends up dying, her team could too... And then when the shrunken WBY are ejected from the game board, Ruby recovers Weiss and Yang but it is Little who recovers Blake, even though Blake is a "cat", so Little overcomes her fear of cats. Speaking of which, WBY are pocket sized, Ruby is without Crescent Rose... That's kinda bad if a fight comes up isn't it ? Especially now that Neo has her new Semblance. Moreover, the theme suggested that she would have sidekicks, but in the end, it may only be her doubles in other guises. In short, after three episodes we can already say that this volume is starting off pretty well.

A few thoughts: #1 - It seems to me the Cat carries forward the purpose theme by alluding to the Prince's purpose, to win his game at all costs. I wonder if the king's fate is tied to the frustration of his purpose as well. #2 - I like your observations about Little; I just have to point out that the mouse is receiving scritches from Weiss when she asks if anyone there could be normal. #3 - Neo seems to briefly lose control of her Semblance upon landing, as it begins to evolve. And I doubt we've seen the last of the Jabberwalker. Perhaps instead of killing it, she tames it?

Great episode :) i know the persona that voiced the curious cat is Prompt fron FF15 and Akechi from Persona5 i think

Darren

I enjoyed the easter eggs we got in this episode like Blake swinging Yang around like she did in Volume 2, The Prince and his Heir speech in regards to how Weiss was back in Volume 1, The Nevermore summon from Volume 1 an they teased the Nevermore summon in Volume 8 also, i hope we get to see it fully summoned that be cool lol was a great episode the whole team that make RWBY work so hard in the animation and some people just forget to realise that, the music by Casey and Michael was awesome, reminded me of the song NEON from Volume 3. great reaction xxx

I always love getting to see Yang be a badass! Also love watching Yang cheering on her girlfriend! 🖤💛🐝

John J Ronald

The Curious Cat is voiced by Robbie Daymond, better known as the English voice of Tuxedo Mask from the Sailor Moon dub.

John J Ronald

Awesome finishing move.....Yang in Super-Sayan mode using Blake's ribbon like a sling-shot while grasping Weiss's summoned Knight's sword....triple combo move FTW! Alyx clearly seems to have left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, even the white pieces turn on Team RWBY once they find out they're (mostly) human. The one Royal guard earlier blurting out "if it weren't for your kind, the King would still be here!" and immediately being shushed by the other guards definitely piqued my curiosity.

John J Ronald

Looks like Neo recovered her parasol, too. Interesting that she shape-shifted into Ruby form first, then shape shifted into a Cinder clone before going back to her real form.

So, before I get into this episode - which no doubt will end up being a lot longer than I plan it to be because it always turns out that way - there’s a couple of things I need to point out after the fact from last week: First, the VA for Jinxy is actually JelloApocalypse. He’s the YouTuber who made the parody video you saw a while ago, “So This is Basically RWBY.” Second, someone pointed this out about Little… they were very excited Ruby addresses them as friend, and they also said last week that “hugs are very valuable.” REMIND YOU OF ANYONE? 👀 As the episode starts, everyone is debating whether or not to follow the story and Weiss is quick to point out: “We aren’t Alyx.” The debate the crew had about whether or not Alyx was in the right for doing the things she did in the book actually is kind of a mirror reflection when you think about it. If you recall, Team RWBY hasn’t exactly kept their hands clean in the Atlas Arc. You might argue one of their biggest choices was keeping the truth from Ironwood. I think their reasons were perfectly legitimate and they were proven right in the end. But they also deceived a ton of people operating under different assumptions for quite a while so there’s definitely a debate to be had there (and trust me when I say that argument has been going on in the FNDM for a while.) One of the soldiers mentions the king would still be here, if not for “THEIR kind.” Which implies something happened either during the fairy tale or shortly after it. It seems like it’s a sore subject with the Prince. Speaking of sore subjects, he throws Penny’s blade away since it’s green. So he’s very color specific. He then beheads the two guards who brought it to him. Maybe it’s a good thing Weiss didn’t get credit like she was trying to. On a side. It’s, it’s nice to see her with a little bit of introspective: “please tell me I was never THIS bad.” What’s interesting about the whole game board setup to me is how it’s mirroring the overall story. Ruby is being forced to play a game with different pieces, while not knowing all of the rules. You didn’t notice this but the Prince was making gestures to the white pawns at first when Ruby tried to move them, basically saying “take a dive.” So the board and her own pieces are stacked against her, just like in Remnant. Of course, the Prince then makes a critical error: “Honey, I shrunk her teammates!” But it basically gave her the strongest pieces on the board, her own rook, knight and bishop. Perhaps this means that in the overall story Ruby has pieces the other side isn’t accounting for as well? I mean, come on guys, Ruby might be the main character, but she ain’t pulling this off all by herself and you know it. Everything stops when she admits to being human, though, which begs the question; what did happen? Is it the story, or was there more to it? What would cause the Prince to crack like that? And before I get too far, his tantrum feels like Rooster Teeth saying “this is what trolls look like.” 😉 Another bit of foreshadowing is when the Prince tells Ruby to give up. Which, come on, the girl’s beaten, battered and bruised, but have you met her? Although when she yells “kick their stupid butts” it’s a little more hostile than we’re used to. My theory here is that she’s lashing out because of everything we’ve already discussed previously. But the rest of her shrunken teammates all had this gleeful look when she gave that order like, “oh, now they’ve done it.” A couple of interesting things to point out about the whole combo attack - first, this is not the first time Blake has swung Yang around, it’s part of their signature dual attack move that they started using back in Volume 2, and it’s popped up on several occasions. However, Weiss is using the wings from the Nevermore in V1. She tried to do that in V8 but was interrupted, but she literally just turned into the nickname Jaune gave her back in Volume 1, “a Snow Angel.” I was not prepared for Yang grabbing Weiss’ Arma Gigas sword and using it herself, though! THAT’s new. When did the girls start doing triple combos? Makes you wonder what will happen when Ruby gets her scythe back? Interestingly enough it’s the Curious Cat that helps them get out of the weird castle where no end is up. But it seems to gradually lose interest as the answers Ruby gives it bore it. But it did say one thing worth thinking about “Times change, and so do we… when it’s our time.” And right before it teleported the animation looked a lot like silver eyes. Coincidence? Okay, while Ruby goes cat chasing we need to discuss Neo for just a second, because the scene lacks a little context unless you’re paying very close attention. With Neo on screen, as you know, she doesn’t speak so you have to pay super close attention to her facial expressions. When she lands, assuming this is way after her tussle during the fall, it means that the order they fall in doesn’t guarantee the time of their arrival. She’s big mad, the first thing she thought of was Ruby because she just finished using her as a punching bag while falling. But then she thought of Cinder so both are on her “list,” for lack of a better word. But when the Jabberwalker showed up, Neo was using her Semblance to transform back but then it dig into the ground and started creating clones of her. And she genuinely seemed surprised by this: she looked one way and they all did the same, than the other. Then she started to realize that whatever’s happening, she has way more power here than she does on Remnant… and look, the Jabberwalker showed up for target practice. I will just close with this: I’m surprised you haven’t picked up on the visual pun yet. Little, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are all miniature size and using Ruby’s cape as… wait for it… a red RIDING hood. I’m turning my theory essay in now, teacher, please give me a good grade. XD PS: My Credit Card howled in pain as I did it, but yes, I pulled the trigger and plan to return to RTX this summer. 😎

kamenriderhime

Ohhh good call, that does seem to be a running theme! Awww hahaha that sounds about right about the scritches :) That's a good point, she'd be smarter to make the Jabberwalker work for her wouldn't she?

kamenriderhime

Yes!!!! Haha! I loved the comparison to Weiss!! Yes I'd love to see the Nevermore too! Everyone was at the top of their game this ep, couldn't agree more! I could see the Neon vibes for sure! Thank you so much, I'm happy you enjoyed it!!!!!

kamenriderhime

YESSSS!!!! The moves were amazing haha! It seems that way about Alyx. Something went down that Ever After folks aren't too happy about!

kamenriderhime

I'm gonna answer your whole comment later but just saw the tail end and wanted to say my condolences to your wallet, but YAY CONGRATS on going to RTX this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I understand that, but waiting 2 years for this season that they could have covered in a few episodes or a movie and not seeing what is going on in Remnant kinda pisses me off. I i was late to this and got to binge this season I might not be so mad.

kamenriderhime

James, I can't see your reply to my comment, but just wanted to say I'm sorry these eps have been a bit disappointing for you! Hang in there, there's still the rest of the season :D EDIT: ok now I can see the comment lol, nm!

Tyler Stobbe

Thanks (I think!) lol - Also, don’t forget to come back here before the next chapter hits! :)

kamenriderhime

Hahaha you're most welcome, and omg thank you for the reminder! Sorry!!! I'm planning on catching up on comments this weekend, sorry for the delay!!!

kamenriderhime

Sorry for not getting back to you right away! That's the thing, change can be either, right? It looked amazing, I agree! The details are so fun. Yeah, she definitely hasn't worked through things yet, so she snaps back even after these brief glimpses. The fight was amazing! OMG as they should be, those images were really incredible! I just know the soundtrack is gonna be awesome too, can't wait! That's the thing, it seems like Alyx left a mark and not in a good way maybe! That's so true, WBY are pocket sized and Ruby has no Crescent Rose! We're down to our wits when it comes to how to battle. Yeah, I could see it going either way with the cat....!! Hmm, good call on that being the reaction of the Ever After to Neo, I hadn't thought of that! I'm so happy you're enjoying it and thanks for watching along with me! Can't wait for the next one!!!! Have a great one! :D

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Sorry for the delay! Hahahah you weren't kidding about seeing red! Hmmm, interesting about the chorus. I think this will be a journey for Ruby for sure. They really killed it with this ep didn't they! I can see how Ruby would still be shaken from Penny's death to a point where it would make her a lot more anxious about our crew's safety, for sure. Awwww that's true about Little, they aren't scared of cats anymore apparently! Yeah that's the thing, we don't have a lot of defenses right now, just our wits! I'm not sure what happened with Neo's semblance, but it means bad news for our crew for sure!!!! Can't wait to see what happens!

kamenriderhime

Ohhh yes I'd heard that about the VA, that's so funny! OMG I know, I could totally see the reminder when it comes to Little :'D That's actually not a bad point about the fact that the Alyx argument applies a bit to our crew, and how they handled things in Atlas. Yeah, something definitely went down with humans here before! Oof, I know, the execution was surprising to me! Lol Weiss having the introspective moment! Ohh so the Prince wanted them to do that. Good parallel for this whole world though, that it's a game we don't know how to play. Hmm, interesting about how this could be a metaphor for Ruby not doing this all on her own! I know, there's definitely a story here! I loved seeing a bit more of the Ruby we know come out! Ohhhh those were the Nevermore wings, nice! Great details when it comes to the battle! I know, wasn't that a crazy combo!? I can't wait to see them all fight in sync once Ruby gets Crescent Rose back! Oh good call on the silver eyes similarities too. I'm curious about the Curious Cat lol. The scene with Neo was intense, I guess she's unlocked/upgraded?? Scary for our crew. LOL it quite literally is a red riding hood now, because they're all riding in it!!!!! Haha A+ for sure! Again, so cool about RTX!!!!

Manny

Okay he was a bit of a twerp but can we agree the prince having a birthday like the actual Red Queen was a little precious idea 🎂 🎈 👑

2023-03-14 21:20:57 I love this episode for the action, humor and what I think it sets up for the rest of the volume. All the different thoughts & theories from other people are very interesting for this volume and I have my own ideas. It’s interesting that they are still not sure about following the story when we know the story is different now. The love of the color red as well as what looks like paint reminds me of the Alice in Wonderland Disney movie where the Queen of hearts soldiers painted the roses red without her knowledge to make her happy. I like how much pomp and circumstance there is to the introduction of the Prince. The absolute disappointment from the girls when they thought this was the king was amazing. I intensely dislike this bratty little kid but that just means the writers did their job well. However I love his arrogant voice acting and the exaggerated/over the top animations. I think Ruby’s little curtsy is cute. It’s funny how Blake is the only one actually trying when saying happy birthday. I think it’s great that Weiss is the 1st 1 he majorly interacts with thinking about her past & what she was like. I don’t think she was ever this bad but I can envision a world where she could have turned out like this. Her eye twitch is such a nice touch. It’s very interesting that the Knights mentioned that humans are the reason the king is no longer around probably talking about Alyx which makes me wonder what she did. It sucks to see the Prince treat Penny’s weapon like trash especially because of what it means to Ruby and her reaction to this. Just another hit to her emotions which is sad especially how her voice sounds. It’s a good thing they were not able to take credit for the gift like Weiss seeing what punishment looks like here. I adore the sneaky/cunning look on Ruby’s face when getting the Prince to continue listening them with his love of games. The scene of the butterfly slowly descending the tower is absolutely incredible from an animation standpoint and things like this make you understand more why this volume took a long time to make. I love how proud Little is of the compliment he whispers to her that would have been an insult if the Prince wasn’t well stupid LOL. It’s hilarious that 1 of the soldiers is laughing so hard they start to cough up wood chips. Laughing when someone asks what the rules to your game is a great way to make them not want to play. Some people were hoping for a more in depth game here but it turns out to be much simpler however the important part is what it does for the characters. Seeing all the magic characters use in the Ever After is so strange with how rare it is In Remnant. It’s so funny that when they shrink Weiss lands gracefully, Blake lands like a cat/ninja and Yang just falls flat on her ass LOL. I like that she still gives a thumbs-up to her sister it’s sweet. I think Ruby is more concerned for them than normal even though she knows they can take care of themselves because of the recent events & loss of Penny. And once again the leadership role is pushed even more onto Ruby with her friends lives literally in her hands. I think the imagery of everything around the game going to black once it starts is great. I like the slightly sinister bit of music right at the start of the game as well. Weiss saying have faith reminds me of volume 1. The way Yang takes out her 1st game piece is my favorite especially her smug/cocky smirk & going cheer louder to the onlookers. I like Blake clapping for her. Blake’s blush when Yang cheers for her is everything. The way the Prince slowly loses it is entertaining even if it’s dangerous for the girls especially how dramatic he is. I like how as the game pieces on our side gain morale they get more confident as well. And we fully learn humans are not well liked here most likely because of things Alyx did. It’s cool that the Prince’s design is like a porcelain doll. This fight is so awesome. I have never had a problem with the fights after Monty was gone and they have gotten more fluid at a faster pace since volume 5 but this is probably the most fluid one since Monty’s unfortunate passing. I love how this references past fights and the different ways the girls move during fights. Like Blake swinging Yang around with her ribbon & Weiss moving like an elegant dancer. Nice bit of continuity Weiss had used some of Blake’s ammo before she fell so Blake was surprised when she had less ammo than she thought. I love how when they were being overwhelmed Ruby is able to keep pushing forward because while she is low on hope she still has hope and determination at this point. I wish she had said asses but maybe that’s just me. Also Little’s dance is so cute. Now that she has summoned wings behind her I guess Weiss is an actual snow angel now. Side note if she can eventually summon parts of her summons onto her own or others bodies it would be really cool just imagine Weiss with full Knight armor. This is the most badass team attacks in the show especially Yang getting a giant sword. I love how it’s a call back to the fight against the giant nevermore all the way back in volume 1. Also Yang’s fiery hair somehow looks better every volume. When the Prince flips the table it could have been bad if they had not been stopped from falling. I think it’s adorable that the tiny girls have to grab on to Ruby’s fingers to keep their balance. I love the design and voice of RWBY’s version of the Cheshire Cat. I enjoy how they smooth talk the Prince with their soothing voice. And it seems like the Cat can affect emotions in some way. 1 of the animators who worked on the cat used their own cat Taco as a reference while animating and I wouldn’t be surprised if other animators who worked on them did the same thing. I love how they move like an actual cat but also in distinct, quirky ways reflecting the world we are in right now. The cat basically saying promises can’t always be trusted or kept is relevant thinking of events in the recent volumes. The crazy design of the red Castle is interesting/creative and is a lot like MC Escher artwork. Unfortunately when things calm down Ruby starts to focus on the negatives. And I have to point out that with all the pressures on her shoulders now there is a literal representation of this with her friends on her shoulders. I think the curious cat’s line about change is going to be very important to the story line of this volume. The stupid sequel line is fantastic especially the delivery. I love how the Cat is easily distracted like real life. It’s sweet & cute to hear Yang call her sister by a nickname. With the bridge at the end of the episode has a light/dark and purple/gold which I think continues to hint that this world is connected to the God brothers in some way. The 1st 2 people Neo turns into are Ruby & Cinder showing that there are now 2 targets for her rage/vengeance. And it looks like her semblance has evolved or this world itself is making it more powerful her ability is overactive imagination after all. And this has got some people thinking of what the girls powers would be if they evolved or if the Ever After is making their abilities stronger. I feel bad for the Jabberwalker as well. It was terrifying to see this monstrous creature scared out of its mind of Neo. I very much agree with the theories about Little representing Ruby’s or some sort of representation of Penny with the mimicking and also how Little is often sleeping when she is sad, distressed or in a negative headspace. Finally I love the jazzy song we got in this episode. Awesome reaction, discussion & keep up the great work. :-) <3

Casey's song was great, Little is precious, Neo is more terrifying than a Jabberwalker and the Curious Cat's favorite dessert is...PANCAKES! (if you know, you know ^^) Great reaction, gonna watch the next one right now :)

Yeah this ep is working really well for sure! The reaction to the king was pretty great haha! And all the subtle nuances of that scene like the curtsy and Blake trying to sing! Weiss seeing what could have been lol, I agree she was never actually that bad but she's for sure on a better path now. Penny's sword, uggghhh so frustrating to watch! Little's compliment lol!!! And yes the animation is stunning here, their work definitely shows! Yang falling, and the coughing up wood chips haha, there's definitely some levity in this one thankfully! Yeah I agree, Ruby's extra protective of them right now. Yeah you can tell how good the fighting animation has gotten for sure. The fight was just amazing and I love the references too! Little's dance omg!!! And Yang's hair!!! The cat is really interesting for sure, and I love Taco the cat being used as a reference! Such a good point that she literally has people on her shoulders now, a great visual representation of all she's carrying at the moment! The sequel line lol, that's trailer material right there! I know, I liked Yang calling Ruby a nickname too, it's the little things lol. Ohhhh I did not catch the connection to the gods!!! Wow! We're in trouble now that Neo's upgraded, for sure. Yeah I felt bad for the Jabberwalker and that's really saying something! Interesting, Little is sleeping a lot during her negative emotions, I hadn't noticed that. Yes the song!!!! Sooo good! Thank you so much for all your kindness and support!!!!! It was great reading your feedback as always!!!! ^_^
