Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 1 episode 12 of The Bad Batch!!!  Well, it's time for our clone friends to get involved, even if they're hesitant at first! I love that Omega is teaching them as much as they are teaching her.  Plus, with Crosshair involved, it feels a bit closer to home.  Shoot, should have known the Empire would do something icky like frame Cham!!  Watching Hera get to really fly for the first time, learn from our Bad Batch friends along the way on how to do rebel-like things, etc. was just everything!  I don't know what I did to deserve this arc!  But now I'm hoping our paths cross more in the future too!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Great line from Eleni Syndulla speaking to Rampart : "I have seen how you treat your allies Admiral; I'd rather remain your enemy" - its a beauty. Hera's hologram kneeling and saying "I need your help", just like Leia. Hunter is unwilling to overly risk his squad, but Omega tells him they are soldiers, its what they are there to do. She sometimes sees things clearer than the rest of the crew. Just also noticed Hera has her arms crossed in worry about her parents before the Bad Batch commit to helping her. We saw that multiple times in Rebels whenever she was worried for her crew, and when she was grieving for Kanan. So cute seeing Hera organise her first plan as a leader. We know she becomes such a guide for her family and great rebel leader down the line; great to watch the start of all this, with Chopper at her side! :) Chopper shanking that droid with glee then shouting "get out the way!" - he's something else! Though yes, generally he isn't quite his snarky self yet, but when he gets there, watch out galaxy !! :D Tech may not have a 'feeling' about flying, but he still has some moves! Howser doing the honourable thing in telling our crew of the imperial plan to ambush them, but won't go with them as he is loyal to his men. So many of the regular clones were good honourable people and great soldiers; there is still some of them left who may be able to get out of the Empire, and do their own thing like our crew here. We see it with Rex later, but how many others managed it? Cool that Hera learnt how to scramble the Ghost's signature from Tech, love that! If you notice Crosshair's face after he asks permission to go after his former brother's, there is a lot going on there. And yes Corey Burton does a tonne of voices, including Cad Bane, Ziro The Hutt, Count Dooku, here with Gobi, and many more; but each one is so different you can barely tell its the same person sometimes.

"Brothers, what are we doing?" Howzer's speech has got to be one of my favorite Clone moments in this entire franchise. He tried to get through to his men, and it kinda worked for some of them. Perhaps the beginnings of a Clone Rebellion? We'll have to see but I'm crossing my fingers lol Fives would have been so proud of Howzer. It's so fascinating seeing all the layers to the Inhibitor Chips that Clone Wars and now Bad Batch has given us. There's so much to consider. Maybe the reason whatever happened to the Clones is because maybe these Chips aren't perfect after all. Sure they eliminated the bulk of the Jedi, but what happens after they've fulfilled their purpose? The Clones aren't inherently evil like alot of these Imperials, like Rampart. Maybe the chips wear out or something? This is probably my favorite Arc of Season 1.

So, Hera definitely had the makings of a rebel from the start - and since you see more of her parents during this, you can kind of see where the Apple isn’t falling too far from the actual tree. Howzer (the clone following Rampart around during the episode) is by far the most interesting character in this arc, though. We know clones are obligated to follow their orders, so what’s his deal? Faulty chip? I have a different theory: the Clones were originally designed to protect people. They had the directive to fight the Jedi, and that makes them painted in a not so great light, but that’s also a very specific directive. Keep in mind a lot of them were assigned with keeping the peace and protecting people, so when Rampart starts being Imperial, it kind of counteracts everything they’ve done. I don’t know if we’ll see him again, but I think this might be the beginning of why the Empire changed to Stormtroopers. Less independent thought. Look, any time Chopper is alone with another droid, you know THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE! 😆 Still, I’m waiting for that R2-D2 and Chopper spin off buddy comedy series! I think Omega is teaching both Hera and Hunter the importance of relationships in this episode. Money has value and is a necessity, but you also need to make friends and Allie’s or you won’t get very far. Hera’s first flight was a little bit on the rocky side, though… but hey, chaos is going to be a constant thing for her, she’ll get used to it. 😅 I think you missed it but when the shuttle got away Hunter looked put the window and it was implied he and Crosshair were staring right at each other. Which might be part of the reason Crosshair wants to go after them… he took it as a personal challenge. Also it’s kinda crazy when you think about the fact that the same actor is doing both the protagonist and the antagonist. Hunter sounds so approachable and Crosshair is exactly the opposite. That VA is nuts, isn’t he? I’m kind of laughing because I thought of that RvB fourth wall break from a few seasons ago where Caboose remarked that “some of the voices sound like some of the other voices” and Church replied, “what do you expect, casting is expensive!” This guy’s doing 90% of the audio and he’s probably just in a booth talking to himself. No, I haven’t seen any further episodes but when I heard you mention chaos a name popped up in my head… I wonder if our crew is ever going to run into a certain pirate… 👀 I’ll stop now. Inquiring minds want to know what your personal droid, err Roomba’s name is though. 😉

Oh yeah, what a line! I know, it was a parallel of Leia's message right! Omega definitely sees things from a childlike yet somehow really grounded/mature perspective, which is part of why I think they're learning so much from her (as well as vice versa). Hahah the arm crossing got started early I guess! I knooow, little Rebel Hera is everything!! With Chopper right there too! My heart can't take it! Hahahaha oh I know, the little glimmers of Chopper's maniacal nature are in there!!! Yeah Tech's definitely got some moves when it comes to flying, albeit his isn't as inspired by passion as pilots like Hera. I know, it's interesting to see that Houser is unaffected in his personality, and also his loyalty. I'm so curious as to how some of these clones managed it!! I know, I love the detail that she learned that from Tech! Yeah....I was bustling with theories about Crosshair after this, as you'll see in my future reactions (just finished the season yesterday!). Omg, Corey Burton is a legend!!! That's amazing, talk about a range, and a resume!!!

kamenriderhime

It's so good!!! I'd follow him anywhere!! A Clone Rebellion, hmmm!! I know, I hope Fives' ghost was watching! I know, there's SO much more to these chips than I thought! That's the thing, after Order 66 is done, what influence do the chips exactly have? Maybe the influence isn't as strong in some as in others?? This was an amazing arc!

kamenriderhime

I know, Hera was sort of born into the rebel scene in a way! Okay I love your theory about Howser and it's actually really close to mine - that they were never EVER programmed to hurt people, and that perhaps in some Clones, ones who had developed very very strong senses of self (which was technically not really a thing that was supposed to happen, but it did), they can overcome whatever influence the chip has to make "automatons" out of them like we've seen with some of them. It would also help explain why there was the switch to Stormtroopers like you said. Hahahaha Chopper is such an alpha droid!!!! OMG the spinoff, you know I'd be glued to it!!!!! Lol, well, no one starts off as an ace pilot I suppose, she still did okay for her first time out I guess! Oooh that is a chilling implication about Crosshair and Hunter. Omg I know, Dee Bradley Baker is scary good at this!!! HAHAHAHAHA it's a total RvB moment, omg!! He for real is just talking to himself, that's such a good point. OMG YEEEEESSSS I was wondering the same thing about a certain pirate!! Lol funny enough, I believe the Roomba is either R2-D2 or BB-8, I honestly can't remember which one we ended up going with when we had to "name" it!!! Of course, it was long before I saw Rebels or it would have been Chopper!!!!!!

I can't wait to get started talking about Crosshair on Wednesday with you and the others here Mel, its a complicated one for sure. I do like how the Bad Batch influences, or is connected to, several of our character in other series; like Rex, who of course they knew beforehand as a fellow soldier; but also Hera here, who they help in their way to bring her out of herself to show the person she will become and that its clones who help her with that; whilst finally Kanan's link is that clones play such an important part of his guilt, sorrow and depression about what happened to him, his master and the Jedi. How did you get on with A New Dawn btw? Did you finish it? I really need to start that. Now that spring is almost upon us, I'll resume my walks and listen to the audiobook of it I think.

Here is a little vid of Dee Bradley Baker slipping in and out of the voices masterfully, when promoting the show, its soo good. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lBNab2LHbw One thing he used to do in Clone Wars I heard, was have a word or phrase associated with individual clones, that he would refer to, to get in the zone for voicing them, and I think with Rex it was the word 'honourable'. Earlier in the show he makes Rex sound really heroic and a true leader, but as Rex begins to question all thats going on in the war, his voice becomes a lot more restrained.

kamenriderhime

Me neither!!!!! It's a LOT!!! It's very true that the clones play a really big part in lots of other characters' lives and stories. Oh, I'm about maybe 2/3 of the way through almost?? I read slow lol, and thanks for reminding me, my iPad died last night so I need to charge it so I can read more tonight!!! Listening to the audio books on walks sounds lovely!!!!

kamenriderhime

That's incredible!!!!!!!!! What a talent!!! Honorable for Rex makes total sense. And that makes sense that he'd associate each clone with some concept, then adjust that as the character grows. Wow!!! I was shocked to learn that outside of Star Wars, he mostly does creature voices. He voices a little critter on one of my other fave shows, Star Trek Prodigy, and you'd never know it was all the same person!!!! :O

Saltire

Yes, I've just been looking through his filmography and see a lot of show's I know the name of that people love, that I've never seen; and yes I do know he is known for doing creatures too, and remember in that episode in Rebels when the Inquisitors are hunting the force-sensitive kids, and he voiced Pipee doing all the goo-goo, ga-ga sounds! Gets some big films to do creatures as well, as I see he worked on The Hobbit and The Force Awakens too. I've heard him a lot in plenty of games I've played over the years too, and its always great hearing him voice the clones in any medium of Star Wars. What a fun job that must be if you have the talent, to voice act. That and be a foley artist on Star Wars creating many of the sound effects, or mixing in the classic ones; these people truly are artists in their own way and can make all the differences in scenes. I used to be a big Star Trek fan too, but heard very mixed stuff about "NuTrek". Heard Strange New Worlds isn't bad, and may check out Prodigy one of these days however.

This was beautiful 🤧 I love getting to see Hera again and Chopper of course. I loved hearing Hera talking about flying in Rebels. She talked about it like it was her life. And it was. Heck this could have been the turning point to give her that exact gumption she needed and has now. And her talking about wanting to always live in a spaceship brought me to tears 😭 This was just so wonderful. And it’s so Star Wars. Like the whole story was based on a stellar story and later gaps were filled with what we all wanted to know. And that what we got here. That’s so great! Anytime we get a chance to see how things progressed is always a great treat and this was absolutely no exception. But now I miss them again 😭

kamenriderhime

Oh wow! Ohhhh yeah Pipee!! He does so many creature voices! I didn't realize he was in video games too. Being a voice actor is a real talent, so is being a sound engineer!! I hear you about newer Star Trek stuff, I think there's a lot of mixed reactions to all of it, it all depends on your preference! Prodigy reminds me of Rebels but with Star Trek lol, I adore it! Strange New Worlds is really good, particularly for those who prefer the pre-new-stuff format!!! Hope you get to check it out sometime!

kamenriderhime

OMG I know!!! We get to see her origins firsthand and it all makes so much sense! I agree about the turning point too. It's SO Star Wars!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well! Too true, any filling in of the gaps is always fun and interesting. OMG same, I want like 10 more seasons of Rebels please lol!!
