Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to RWBY Vol. 9, ep 1!!!!  AND WE'RE BACK!!!!!!!  You guys, I have even more questions than answers!  Our girls are safe and back together, but we still have no idea about Jaune or Neo, and where exactly we are.  Poor Ruby, having to hear about Penny....poor Weiss, having to be the only one who knew what happened!!!  And the Bees moment, squee!!!  Oh yeah, and let's not forget about ADORABLE TALKING MICE!!!!!!!!!  :O  That creepy not-Grimm creature certainly had some interesting things to say too.  Gotta say, I called the fairy tale vibe from the start!  I can't wait to see where this is all going!  So happy we're back with the best day of the week!!!!!!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I love that you're back on the series that brought me to your channel. And for that, I have a surprise for you in the works. I think you're the first person I've heard voice the idea that this "Ever After" realm might help explain the fairy-tale patterns of Remnant. I think it's neat that Blake of "the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale" gets to be the one to call out what the place looks like. And I'm sure you noticed how Blake is sort of carrying the team right now, as she's dealing with the least direct trauma at the moment.

We're back and we start with a Yang! Literally!! First of all hello! I’m back again in time for RWBY season! And I’m so excited to get to watch the show alongside you again, but this time as someone who will be seeing new content for the first time with you! (technically the second time since I watched the episode when it released but you get what I mean). CRWBY have stated quite a few things in Q&A’s in the two years it took for this volume to come out but one of the most important things is that this volume is very heavily Ruby centered! It will focus on other things and the other girls but Ruby is meant to be the true star of this volume. And if what we’ve seen in this episode is any indication our girl is going to go through it… which is not great but also great at the same time. As we all know Ruby tends to internalize her negative emotions and her traumas so maybe this wacky but emotionally confronting seeming journey would be good for her. Everyone needs a moment to break down every now and then. Other than that, CRWBY have also said this volume will focus on the idea of whether or not the girls still think they have what it takes to fight the war against Salem. We’re in for a very reflective volume! (Side note: The Ruby POV of the last couple eps of Volume 8 is so visceral! You can literally hear Ruby’s heartbeat pick up faster and faster to the point where it sounds like she might be having a panic attack. Also a slight silver blurring around the edges of the screen whilst Ruby is gazing up at Cinder - which is when Ruby was probably planning to blast her with her silver eyes - was a nice detail since we’re literally seeing through Ruby’s eyes) Oh they’ve also said Little and the other mice on the island use They/Them pronouns which is neat. Speaking of our tiny mouse friend, it’s nice to know even though Ruby might go through emotional hell this volume she’ll have a little (hehe get it?) therapy mouse with her! The Jaberwalker (at least I think thats what this RWBY version of a Jabberwocky is called) is so uncomfortable to look at it… its so awesome! A testament to the animation for sure! It reminds me of the Hound in a way, the way all you have to do is look at it and you’re slightly intimidated. (Fun fact: the bird in the beginning and the Jaberwalker have the same voice actor! XD) Something I’ve had pointed out to me is how the roles of team rwby have almost reversed. Right now they’re all in different states of emotional/mental health, with ironically Blake now being the best headspace as opposed to her teammates. Blake has taken on a small leadership and decision making role as well as being a little more optimistic. Weiss is trying to alleviate tense situations with humor while also trying to shoulder her own burdens. Yang is recovering from a traumatic event in her life and is being a little more cynical and Ruby is closing off from everyone else and being a little colder than normal. Also Yang being so upset that Ruby and the others are there because she literally thought she was dead and if they were there with her it meant they would’ve been too and she failed in protecting them? OW! Speaking of Yang, the bees reunion was something I almost screamed out loud over! (couldn’t actually though cuz the episode released 3am where I live and everyone in my place was asleep haha). That hug was sooo soft and looked so warm and cozy, god I love them. Ruby really couldn’t handle anymore bad news coming her way, especially not about Penny, poor girl… I dunno if I can survive the rest of the volume if it means she keeps being sad…. I’m so excited for all the little Alice in Wonderland elements of this volume! And I love how it plays into the foreshadowing Oscar and Ozpin gave us about the Girl who Fell Through The World, who in the RWBY world was named Alyx. The intro reveals all the fun, dangerous and absolutely wondrous (hehe again get it?) shenanigans we’ll see the cast be included in, but it also reveals the depths of the despair our poor rose is falling into. In the eleventh hour, will WBY be too late to see how much their leader is really struggling? Find out maybe next time! I’m so excited to see the rest of the volume and I’m even more excited to see it with you again! It’s good to be back! Hi Hime :) We're back, and what a comeback, the intro through Ruby's eyes is very scary, it shows how everything went super fast, how hard it was to concentrate and that our poor Ruby, really needs to pause and breathe... When Ruby asks Little if she's seen people like her, Ruby only talks about Yang and Blake, because she doesn't know that Weiss fell too. Besides, Weiss who cheerleader Blake is just adorably cute. But she also needs a break, I almost cried seeing her talk about what happened. The new theme is written entirely by Casey, without Jeff. Casey took her father's place for Volume 9, after he retired. There is indeed a lot of theory, but the atmosphere tends towards Alice in Wonderland. The creature would be the jabberwocky, in the theme we see the queen of hearts, cat's eyes glowing in the dark, a hookah smoking caterpillar, that's a lot. With that in mind, Neo taking tea immediately brings to mind the Mad Hatter and Yellow, the White Knight, has clocks in the background, could he be the White Rabbit? After all, the mascot of his favorite cereal brand, Pumpkin Pete's, is a rabbit. For the new character, she seems to be "Alice", but going over the theme for the 5 or 6 times with you, I have a new idea, what if she was Crescent Rose ? She first appears during Ruby's portrait, she reappears with our girls in the theme after crescent rose falls and smashes to pieces, when she appears at the end too, after she leaves, a wave bring Crescent Rose. My craziest theory, because of her appearance that reminded me of Penny, would be that Penny's soul is somehow brought to life in Crescent Rose... Because she looks like what could have been Pietro's daughter, the skin and eye color matches. The only thing that contradicts that is that we see a portrait of her with a person behind in the theme, a person with glasses, like a big sister or a mother. Which reinforces her influence "Alice" who had to be with her big sister when she disappears. Another idea would be to link it to the silver eyes, because she appears silver over Ruby in the theme. But one thing is certain, there is a link with Ruby in my opinion.

Also a little technical thing about Crunchyroll and subtitles for RWBY if you didn't already find out, I heard that they don't really do subtitles for the English Dub of shows so like it will only work in a Sub version which is kind of meh for the people who need them upon initial English release or may want them to catch things they dont initially hear.

Welcome back dear :)i knew the first episode wasnt gonna be crazy, i understand the first episode should be, get them together quick an then really focus on volume which i like, if you havnt heard of Pheonix/Night the youtube who loves RWBY he has some very interesting debates about this volume, one that interests me in Neo an her semblance to fabricate things an he thinks her powers may also be affecting this world because of the intro at the end its like a tapestry with neo at the bottom an her semblance rising up, but i am so excited an the song omg the song my new fave

I noticed on the Intro that The Girl with The Bow kept overshadowing Ruby a lot, be funny if she was cresant rose not heard of that theory before :). Also Jeff Williams retired from doing the songs for RWBY but his Daughter Casey an her friend Michael Gonzalas (not sure if i got the name right) are head of that now and lets just say they didnt let us down, i do hope Jeff makes an appearance in the songs one day as a cameo :)

But we know this is going to be a tough time for Ruby in this wonderful but dangerous place. i have no idea what is going to happen, the theme song is released already maybe as a gift for us waiting so long too, but i am sure you will be doing that with the rest of the album at some point, but its sad to see ruby fall behind her team when they are running in the intro, an i hope she gets cresent rose back soon, i love it when ruby fights shes so cool

I’m already in love with The Bird, it’s basically a shoebill stork’s head on a flamingo’s body, and I was cracking up from the moment I saw it. I hope it shows up again! Also I’m in the same boat, I avoided all trailers for this except the first teaser from a while back which was Ruby’s POV at the beginning. Also, Weiss being a cheerleader when Blake was trying to grab her weapon was too much! XD Much needed comedy after last Volume.

"Little" is voiced by veteran anime voice actress Luci Christian....her third RWBY role! Previously the voice of Fria (previous Winter Maiden before Penny) and before that, Lil' Miss Malachite. Luci can definitely do "cute critter" voices very well.

Her skirt and skin tone remind me a little of Ciel from RWBY3 but Ciel's outfit was more basic in design. Maybe CRWBY tossing a bone to all the Ciel fans...like, I'm pretty sure it's not her but they may have used her as inspiration for the Girl in the Bow.

In my personal head-canon, Ciel got sent to Vacuo as an Atlas military attache to the Atlas Diplomatic Mission there. Partially a lateral transfer but in reality a punishment assignment for what happened to Penny on "her" watch. I hope we actually get to see her again in Vacuo, helping to coordinate the resettlement of Atlas refugees.

Weiss understandably dodged the question of "what happened after I fell?" from Blake then Ruby because she wanted to wait until they found Yang and she wouldn't have to repeat herself....and relive it mentally more than once....because she knew she would break down and Ruby just fainted...obviously they kept talking while Ruby was unconscious....we may get to see more of that conversation from their perspective later. I didn't notice Little fanning an unconscious Ruby until watching your reaction, Melissa....and I'd seen it x2 on my own before today.

Also, Penny's body is probably down here as well, as it was resting atop the platform(s) Ambrosius created but got dispelled by Cinder when she went to "add more flames to the fires of Atlas". Weiss also didn't see Jaune fall, only Winter could infer that when he didn't come through the gate behind her. The twin suns make it clear wherever this place is, it's definitely not Remnant. While I think the Jabber-walker is hostile, I don't think it's a Grimm of any kind.

Hmm, what day of the week you say? As if your shirt wouldn’t give it away. :P So, I need to start by pointing out something Yang noticed in V8: “wherever this is, it’s not part of Remnant.” - this was when they were deciding to open the Central Location where all the end of Volume chaos happened. Also CRWBY has let people know that they’ve dubbed this area the “Ever After.” I think Neo was specifically turning into characters who would get an emotional rise out of Ruby as she fell. Every one of her transformations was to a character Ruby had a connection to. Oscar, Yang, and Penny. Also keep in mind: Ruby and Neo fell BEFORE Penny did… that. In fact, there’s been a lot of discussion that Penny made that choice because she assumed Ruby had died. It’s interesting how when Ruby wakes up she can still hear echoes of people from the incidents. Also, when she started walking through the forest it wasn’t so much she was going in circles as she was caught in a loop. To explain: there’s a trope in some video games where you exit an area from one side and come back in from the other and this will never stop unless you do a specific thing. So that weird bird making all that noise was the same bird. When Ruby sits down to cry, you thought it was a coincidence but it’s not - the weather started raining BECAUSE she started crying. Which has its own set of questions. Obviously, the whole mouse being named Little seems to be a play on Stuart Little. Also they seem very interested in what exactly Ruby is. Ruby tried to answer but she just ended up confusing the mouse more. And maybe, herself? It seems the fall order has no effect on where you end up, since Ruby and Blake fell together but Blake found Weiss first, even though she fell much later. Also notice how Weiss seems to be unusually upbeat for her over trivial things. She’s joking and quipping a lot at first… until anyone tries to ask her what happened. She won’t say right away because that’s not a story she wants to tell more than once… Weiss does mention she’s low on Dust, so that could be a problem later. Also, the vine trap begs another question: the mice couldn’t have known Weiss and Blake would fall into their trap. What were they setting a trap for anyway? It seems that Little is helpful enough to get Ruby out of Loop status and find her friends at least, but they sure sleep a lot. I see you ran into the same issue a lot of people did… for some reason there weren’t any subtitles delivered to Crunchyroll for this episode. Which is a problem when you ran into that one beast. In the credits it’s given the designation “Jabberwalker.” It seems to be saying what it’s doing. It started by saying “Searching… stalking…” and when it ran towards Weiss and Blake it said “Danger… death!” Then when it realized it was outnumbered it said something like “wait… retreat… listen… return…” Not exactly accurate but that’s the gist of it. Yang’s upset everyone’s here because she thinks they’ve died too. Which, to be fair, we can’t actually rule out. It kind of looked like Ruby’s Aura might’ve been leaving her as she fell, so I’m curious to see how Aura and Semblance apply here, if they do at all. But Ruby does point out Yang did raise her so she does have a little persistence of her own. Remember, Jaune fell last. Even Weiss doesn’t know he’s down here, but he is the reason she’s in this place and not dead. For all she knows, he made it out. Ruby heard Weiss start to talk but when she said “Penny sacrificed herself,” that’s what caused her to faint. Also on a side note, Kara (Weiss’ VA) is really good in this chapter the way she’s layering every one of her lines but you can hear how brittle they are underneath. Okay there’s a couple of things I think are interesting in the theme: First, Weiss, Blake and Yang all have logos that get brighter as they evolve. Ruby, on the other hand - hers get progressively darker and she does not evolve to her third look but rather a clay model instead. During a lot of the theme, Weiss, Blake and Yang are chasing a shadow and they keep speeding up, but Ruby is walking the whole time and falling further behind every time the speed changes. At the end when Ruby’s falling past everything, it kind of looks like Neo’s Semblance is creating everything that is being passed. So that’s something curious. I don’t have too many thoughts on the strange girl yet, not enough information. I will leave you with this, though… CRWBY let us know in this episode… Volume 9 will be… cheesy. 😁

Oh wow, I knew Casey was taking his place, but didn't realize it was for this volume too - the theme is amazing! She did a great job! I can definitely see the Alice in Wonderland influence! Neo as the Mad Hatter, whoa! Oh that would make some sense about Jaune!!! I can see a very Alice-like nature in the new character! OMG!!!! So I was literally just thinking, as someone commented that Penny's body likely fell into this place as well, that what if she came back somehow?! If she combined with Crescent Rose to make a new person...........!!!!!!!!! It adds up in a lot of ways!!! Oh, well, the portrait works against that theory a bit I guess. YAY!!! We're getting this volume started with a Yang, as it should be!! I'm so happy you're watching along with me! That's interesting that this will be focused on Ruby as well as the gang's doubts. Oh that's so interesting about the pronouns for the mice, I can't remember what I used (I usually try to default to they/them if they don't say) but I'll use those from now on! Awww therapy mouse, yay! The first person view was SO intense!! The Jabberwalker (thanks for the name info!) is disturbing and very much like the Hound! No kidding about the voice actors, talk about a range!! Oh that's an interesting point about the role reversal, I can see it for sure! The Beeeeesss!! <3333 The hug was great! Hahaha I made sure to wear my best for this blessed day :D Ever After, I like it! Neo twisting the knife with the transformations was intense, and so true that that was pre-Penny :( I know Penny passed the power onto Winter because she thought Ruby was dead, or that was a theory at the time, but good point that she may not have decided what she did if she'd known Ruby was alive. :( Ohh interesting about the loop, and also about the crying, good call! Does Ruby affect this place in some way?? Yeah I'm curious about the trap! And hopefully the low dust issue doesn't become, well, an issue later but...we'll see! Little is so adorable and helpful!!! Yeah it's too bad about the subtitles, but nothing a careful re-listen couldn't mostly clear up fortunately. Kara's doing an amazing job for sure! And true, we can't rule anything out, but I have a feeling there's more to it. I noticed the darkness in Ruby's new "evolution", definitely symbolic! I think all that suggests that Ruby is gonna have a tough time this time around, understandably so! Ooohhh interesting about the Neo factor too. I agree, there's lots of theories about the girl but we have yet to find out! Hahahahaha nothing like a good mouse pun to restore some joy :D

Such a joy to watch along the rest of the community ^^ So hyped about this new realm, the struggles they're gonna face, the new friends made along the way...My god, the mice are EVERYTHING I needed after Penny's second death. 2023-02-26 16:41:34 This episode was a great return to RWBY. I love your reaction and all the excitement. I basically felt the same as you did before watching the episode. Your anxiety is relatable thinking about everything that went down in volume 8. Still feel bad you had to go through that. I love the 1st person perspective of Ruby of the end of volume 8 because it makes it even more clear how intense it all was as well as a small idea of the trauma she has been going through especially thanks to the music and the heartbeat. The things around her look like balls of energy or something. The way that they seem to be floating just shows they have been falling for a long time & are probably going very fast. Neo was probably trying to mess with Ruby by turning into people she cares about. Also she has a lot of blind rage trying to kill her before they in her mind assumedly die. Also the 1st person perspective is great at immersing us in the moment. I need to mention how weird time looks to be in what is officially called the Ever After(which has connections to fairytales) since Neo fell 1st, then Blake then Ruby but somehow Blake got to the island 1st and Ruby & Neo were falling at the same time which shouldn’t be possible. Which means time and probably other things don’t work the same as on Remnant like we know which is going to be interesting with how it is used in the story. I thought the person calling Ruby was Yang but after hearing it more I thought it was Penny which has since been confirmed which is sad. The loop might represent her current mindset constantly fighting but always ending up back to things feeling futile. Usually rain in stories is used as literary device to represent sadness but here it looks like emotions affect the environment which could potentially lead to interesting/creative stuff with other emotions. Also I have to mention that the few times Ruby cries it’s almost always when she is alone which is not healthy. Little is God damn adorable I love them. I love that helping them makes her a little happier. Little talking about your purpose & names makes me think that will be a big theme this volume like who or what are you. Their interactions are so cute. I love the Blake & Weiss interactions. I feel so bad that Weiss knows what happened and is deflecting so she only has to say it once. Cheerleader Weiss is everything. Ruby coming onto the scene of both of them captured by the mice looks like she is hoping she is hallucinating which is amazing LOL. I love how Blake & Weiss describe Yang. Some people were thinking the description was going to go in a romantic direction like Blake going into way too much detail. The leader mouse looks awesome. Even though it’s disturbing & horrifying/terrifying you have to admit the Jabberwalker clearly based on the Jabberwocky from Alice in Wonderland has an incredible design. I love the way it is animated with the jerky movements and the kind of after images. The voice acting fits this character/creature so well. I think it might be under the command of something else. I love Ruby bringing up Yang basically being a mother to her. The Blake tackle hug is the best thing. I’m glad this wasn’t the moment of them dealing with their romantic feelings since this was about the relief of finding each other after thinking they were separated forever. Bumblby is amazing and a kiss is happening this volume I feel it in my bones <3. I really felt it when Weiss started breaking down talking about everything. Ruby fainting as soon she hears about Penny’s death is such a mood. And that’s just more grief, stress and responsibility she will put on her shoulders. And when she wakes back up talking about Neo she sounds completely different/dead inside and props to Lindsay for amazing voice acting, And add to that Ruby not answering or ignoring when asked if she’s okay we can see clearer than ever that she is internalizing and probably has been doing it for a long time. Yang thinking she was dead & being upset because that would mean her loved ones were also dead is a big yikes/oof moment. Like others have said I love that “real life isn’t like a fairytale” Blake is the one who thinks this is a fairytale. The opening song is such a banger but the visuals are the real masterpiece for me. Jeff Williams & Alex Abraham will be missed as working on the music and the show’s music will change but that is not a bad thing at all. The character at the end of the opening is most likely the main character of the girl who fell through the world story we have heard about whose name was revealed to be Alyx in the Roman Holiday book where it was also revealed to be Neo’s favorite story. Great thoughts at the end of the episode but now it’s time to talk theories. And there are some theories I can’t talk about yet because they are based on the trailers and I don’t want to spoil you but thankfully the trailers only show stuff from the 1st 3 to 4 episodes so hopefully I can talk to you about them soon. I love the character models in pastel color that represent the characters. While Weiss, Blake and Yang are shown becoming more confident as their outfits change going through the volumes in the opening as they become stronger, overcome traumas Ruby looks more confident in the past volumes and less as they show her going through the volumes. And while the others emblems become brighter as it goes her emblem becomes darker. Also the others have the full character model Ruby is just the pastel model looking away from the camera while the others are looking towards the camera. And I think that says a lot about what she will be going through this volume which I am not looking forward to seeing but I know it will make for some great character development and will be interesting. It seems like Blake may be taking a leadership role with what we see if Ruby can’t. They seem to be following the shadow of Alyx maybe following in her footsteps? There is a theory that everyone who fell down here will be/will have to fill a role or play the part of a character in the story like Ruby and the other girls all being the “Alice” and Neo being the Mad Hatter analogue with her looking like a mob boss in the opening. There was a theory video from a while ago that went with the idea that Jaune & Neo have parallels and a connection with their grief and how it consumes them and with the 2 of them shown side-by-side in the opening I think there is some validity to this. Also while I think a big focus of this volume will be Ruby the fact that Jaune & Neo being shown 1st in the opening I think they will have a large focus as well. There was another theory I'm not sure about which was Ruby and Neo having connections through the idea of innocence & madness which could be interesting. There also is a theory that semblances may have strange effects on this world and might be stronger. Related to that if you look at all the images when Ruby is falling in a row it looks like everything is coming from Neo along with the broken glass effect of her semblance and because of that there is an idea that not all but some stuff in this world is coming from Neo’s mind. And if that’s true the shadow figures behind her could be people from her past brought to life while in this world and the figures to her left and right might be her parents and if so the figure behind her would be Roman. And as someone who loves him, Neo, their dynamic and the Roman Holiday book that would make me so happy <3. Some things I almost forgot Casey’s vocals are incredible as always. Learning about the they/them pronouns about the mice was interesting and cool. Honestly Ruby will probably be going through it this volume. Also her being separated from Crescent Rose is most likely very intentional with how much of her identity she has put into being a Huntress. Your anxiety is relatable thinking about everything that went down in volume 8. Still feel bad you had to go through that. I need to mention how weird time looks to be in what is officially called the Ever After(which has connections to fairytales) since Neo fell 1st, then Blake then Ruby but somehow Blake got to the island 1st and Ruby & Neo were falling at the same time which shouldn’t be possible. Which means time and probably other things don’t work the same as on Remnant like we know which is going to be interesting with how it is used in the story. I thought the person calling Ruby was Yang but after hearing it more I thought it was Penny which has since been confirmed which is sad. The loop might represent her current mindset constantly fighting but always ending up back to things feeling futile. I still am grateful to you for suggesting I get my plushie Penny for the finale lol! The first person perspective was really interesting, especially getting to see the actual fall. Neo's rage is really something, especially since like you said, she probably assumed they'd die anyway, but was still trying to take Ruby out. Great points about the loop being symbolic, and also time working different in the Ever After. Also that is gut wrenching about Penny's voice being the one we hear calling out, oof! I adore Little as well and I think they will play a big part in helping Ruby find herself, I agree that will be a big theme! Poor Weiss, she's being so strong here! LOL Ruby's face when she finds them tied up! The Jabberwalker is really creepy and awesome! The voice acting and emotions were really strong in this one for sure. YAY BUMBLBY!!!! I agree, I think we are soooo close to a kiss! Ruby's definitely internalizing and not dealing with her emotions which I think is something we'll be dealing with a lot. There's definitely a lot of symbolism in the opening shots too. I'm curious about what role Alyx will play. Interesting theories about Jaune and Neo too, that makes sense. She definitely seemed to be building up some sort of crew didn't she. Oh wow that's a really interesting theory about bringing up things from Neo's past, I'd LOVE to see Roman again!!!
