Hey everyone!  Here I am with Jojo season 1, episode 4!!!  Wow, now it feels like we're building the true foundation of the series!!!  Dio's laying low and building his gang of vamps, which includes none other than Jack the Ripper, because OF COURSE IT DOES!  And Jojo is laying low too, healing up and even rekindling things with Erina, YAY!!!  But it doesn't stay quiet for long once our new friend Zeppeli shows up.  Cue the training montage!!!  Learning about Hamon energy was fun and it seems as if Jojo and Dio are really two sides of the same coin when it comes to how they're fighting now.  I'd say Jojo's first mission was a success!!!!  Can't wait for more!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I'm pretty confused. Jack the Ripper play a major role in others anime. In fate, (s)he(?) become one of the servant that people talk about for a while. In Record of Ragnarok, he is one of the human representative and laid a huge story. But here he seems... minion?

Senpai

You'd think that Zeppeli was a name change the official translation would have to go with(Since he is named after Led Zeppelin), but it's not. 🤣 I love how quirky this guy is. Also I keep forgetting that zombie was Jack the Ripper.. My brain keeps auto-correcting that fact to: "Dio was actually Jack the Ripper." I mean... It doesn't really sound too far-fetched. XD

Hi Hime :) Get used to the sadness of losing someone... Because this series doesn't hold back its blows at this level. Dio's voice actor did a fantastic job. He added a lot of strange noise, but he gave it all. You have to understand that Dio in Japan is as cult as Freiza from Dragon Ball and is one of the most popular villains. Carried roles on these shoulders is a lot of pressure, especially after the Dio of the OAV of the year 90/2000 which was all as good. But he did such a good job, that now when his voice is heard, you immediately think of Dio, like when he does Clayman in "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" (he's really good at playing bad guys manipulator). Little clue to know if the episode is really finished or if there is a post credit scene, look for the "to be continued", if you don't have it before the ending, it means you have a scene after the credits. I knew you would be "awwww" with Erina treating Jojo. They were meant to be together and seeing them together is always nice. And then casually, Erina has character, she had already shown it by cleaning herself with dirty water after Dio's kiss, but treating Jojo until her fingers were swollen from the water, it is also a sacred strength of character and devotion. Zeppeli is indeed a reference to Led Zeppelin, you'll have another one later but I'll say it in due time. But it's still quite comical, that the one who teaches a martial technique to Jojo, is Italian and not of Asian origin. While in many films, you have the story of the white man who learns martial arts from a Chinese master (Kill Bill for example), here it is the one who learned martial arts who trains a new recruit lol. Even with classic tropes, Araki likes to twist them. Jojo's power system is therefore the hamon or ripple, you associated it with Demon Slayer for its breathing technique. But doesn't the fact of helping to heal you, the test with the glass and that Zepelli force its activation at Jojo mean anything else to you? Little hint, you finished the anime recently and I have often repeated that its author was inspired by Jojo ^^. You will better see the relationship between the two much later, however.

Since I’m ahead of you, most of my comments for the time being will consist of wisecracks and clarification… and not necessarily in that order. 🙃 I’m pretty sure Baron Zeppeli is a play on Led Zeppelin. Also, there’s a lot of tropes going on in this episode, as you’ve noticed. I think the word you’re looking for to describe this show is “campy.” There are some horrible things happening but they’re so over the top there’s a bit of comedic nature to it. Of course, what’s an anime without at least one training montage? And of course that’s kind of what this is. Dio has his weapons, so now it’s time to give Jojo an answer for them. But seriously, how DID Jack get inside the horse…? Never mind, I don’t think I want to know. Which reminds me, how big is your “vault?” Cause over the course of this show, you’re going to want some more shelf space… 😅 PS: They did mention Vikings during this episode, which reminds me to alert you that Vinland Saga Season 2 is coming - the tentative release date is January 2023.

Vampire Jack the Ripper? No I’m out 😬

You're spot on with Zeppeli being a reference to Led Zeppelin :D One thing to note when it comes to stuff being translated differently for copyright reasons (and something I always find hilarious) is that, pretty universally all the references are just given in direct english, like Speedwagon for expample is just straight up called Speedwagon even in the Japanese dialogue, not... well, whatever the Japanese translation of that would be. So, when those changes crop up, while the subtitles may give a different name, if you listen to the dialogue you can hear the actual name being said. So, in essence, even if you stick with the localised version you won't necessarily be missing out on all the references

kamenriderhime

Yay!!! Been a Zeppelin fan for decades so I'm pleased lol. Yes, I've heard some things about all the naming issues! Good call on listening closely for the actual name / pronunciation! Thanks for the heads up!

kamenriderhime

Yes!!! I guess each show has a different role for old Jack?? This one was....well, henchman more or less :P

kamenriderhime

Hahahah good to know :P That's awesome! Campy is a good word for it. I know, we had to have at least one montage right! Yeah I hear you, I absolutely do not want details on the horse issue! Yeah, between all the messed up stuff I watch on a regular basis, I think I may be looking to expand my "vault" :/ Lol! Oh yes, I'd heard about Vinland Saga!!!! I'll have to see how that times out with whatever else I'm watching at the time!! Thanks!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Oof!!! Good to know! Lol the voice acting is superb. That's so awesome, he really did a great job with such a big role!!! Love that I've already heard him in so many other things too! Ohhhh thanks for the heads up on how to tell if there's an after credits!!! Yeah I was happy to see them back together! Erina's pretty devoted for sure! Yes, love the reference!!! That's such a good point about the reversal of the trope here with the martial arts training! Ohhhhh yes I can totally see how it's very much like Nen!!! How did I not think of that in the moment lol. I can see the inspiration for sure! I can't wait to know more!!

ABHB Ya-iba

Oh right! Taking it that way, Jojo are really related to Kamen Rider and Demon Slayer. First, the same kind of power for both Jojo and Dio, the different side of the same coin. And the fact that Vampire and Zombie died in sunlight energy created, it's like the Demon Slayer's demon!

Supermonaman

I love episodes 3 and 4 and I love that you are very into the show. Episode 3 is the first great episode in my opening and crazy thing it’s not even close to some of the best IMO. I love how tense the entire episode is especially when Dio has first transformed into a vampire. The crocodile tears from him are obvious but I like the voice acting and I love his inner thoughts. And of course trusting Jonathan would believe this especially with how intelligent Dio is being very good at manipulation. Unfortunately for him Jonathan’s good nature got Speedwagon on our side & he is very streetsmart thankfully. I love how this was just to convince the father of the truth so they could arrest Dio. It shows so much of Jonathan’s character that he actually shows caring towards Dio even after everything he’s done. And then Dio goes full villain & goes for the stab. I think you figured this out but Dio was planning on using Jonathan’s blood before the father got in the way. Of course George would get in the way with what we learn from the police chief. I love how much of a good person George is being able to empathize with much different than him & want to help Dio’s father. It’s so sad but I love this heartfelt goodbye & the way it helps us understand the father. It’s very heartfelt to hear his regrets about being hard on Jonathan and how he could have had an effect on what Dio decided to do even if it’s not good to blame yourself it really shows his good nature/character. And I agree that I think Dio would have turned out this way regardless. Honestly becoming a vampire and becoming a villain that while scary and vile also chews the scenery/is hammy was the best thing for his character as a villain. He’s kind of high on life and having the most fun ever in the worst way possible LOL. The voice actor for Dio brings so much to the table with all the weird over the top noises and how dramatic he is especially once he turns into a vampire. It wasn’t subtitled but the noise he makes when we first see his vampire form the noise he makes is “Wry!” Which is fantastically ridiculous LOL. I get what you mean about the violence not phasing you as much because it’s distant from reality. Everything about the vampire abilities is disturbing because it’s inhuman and very unsettling especially the bloodsucking. I love the whole plan with the fire it’s clever/awesome. The color change of the animation with the purple fire and that kind of thing is without spoiling a signature of the show. I admire Jonathan’s determination to give everything to take this monster down for his and Dio’s sake. All the cleverness along with some luck that this almost victory took is amazing. The guardian angel of the family he took so much from being what kills him is fitting. Although of course Dio survives and what really sucks is if that guy had not shown up he would have died at daybreak. Episode 4 is great. The sweet stuff with Jonathan & Erina is a nice injection of heartwarming after what’s happened. Zeppeli is a goofball but he’s awesome & cool I like him. Hamon is a great power system it’s very creative. The show is old enough that I’m not surprised it potentially inspired other powers like elemental breathing from demon slayer and Nen. The way this episode shows the training is interesting & cool especially the stuff about Jonathan & Dio being 2 sides of the same coin. There is a bunch of disturbing shit in this episode would rather not dwell on but on a basic level those disturbing things are creative. I love how both of Jonathan’s big fights were trials by fire. I think the Viking analogy is basically to teach Jonathan that you have to be intelligent & have good instincts during a fight. It’s so cool not to spill a single drop of wine while fighting. Finally I think Zeppeli’s back story is well done in its tragic nature & gives a whole lot of reasons for his resolve. I almost forgot Dio walking around & acting like a king is so on brand I guess you could say LOL. Awesome reactions to these episodes & keep up the great work. :-) <3

Supermonaman

Oh yeah also the Led Zeppelin reference with Zeppeli’s name is awesome. As I said I’m glad you are enjoying this show because it’s not for everyone being so out there LOL. I’m enjoying your journey through this show & I can’t wait for you to get to certain things. This show goes to some insane places. I hope you are doing great lately :-) <3.

The-Buddyguard

He was the first soul eaten on camera in Soul Eater, if memory serves. The man's a caricature at this point, but always serves as an interesting minor highlight--in the form of a cameo only.

The-Buddyguard

Wow, so much here. Speedwagon continues to prove his honorable/loyal nature, and I'm both here for it, and scared. Yes, I feel like Erina is THE easy target, and most obvious. But I was scared when he stepped out of the wagon to investigate lol. Although, concerning the lovebirds, SO happy for their oh-so cheesy romance, truly 😋 Zepelli's crusade reminds me of Melody's with the Dark Sonata, but this man's teaching our boy good. I'm really digging all this with each episode, and the bizarreness is surely increasing.

kamenriderhime

I love these eps too! The descent of Dio is really something to see! Yeah Jojo's good nature is actually really powerful, unfortunate for Dio!!! Yeah this was quite the ordeal just to get Dio arrested haha. I know, for Jojo to be caring after all that was phenomenal. Also yes, I think after a bit I did put it together that Dio was aiming for Jojo and not the dad, but dad got in the way. Yeah those last moments really showcased who George was as a person, and it really makes sense considering how good natured Jojo grew up to be! LOL high on life in the worst way is the perfect way to describe Dio!!!! In a way, it's super fitting that he would go down this path of over the top villainy. Yeah the vamp power is freaky for sure. And the fire plan was so good! Oh that's interesting about the color change! Yeah the cleverness and luck in Jojo's plan were spot on, and you've gotta admire that he'd do literally anything to bring Dio down! The guardian angel stuff was actually really profound!! And I know, Dio was a goner for sure if that guy hadn't gone back!!! The system of Hamon is pretty cool and it makes total sense that it inspired later stories!! So true about the disturbing stuff lol but I get what you're saying!! That was a good analogy about the Vikings!! The wine thing was so impressive!!! LOL it's totally on brand for Dio! Oh yes I love the reference! Hahaha I can totally see how it's not for everyone but I'm really liking it so far! Thank you so much, so happy you're enjoying my reactions and thanks for all the kindness and support!!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

Yes!!! I hear you, I'm also scared lol. True, maybe they won't go the predictable route! It's a delightful cheesy romance right!! Oh yeah, I could see the similarities there for sure! The bizarreness levels are rising haha!! I'm glad you're enjoying it too!!

kamenriderhime

Oh no kidding!! Yeah he pops in just to give the show some cred and then his work is done haha.

Nathan Poulain Cigrand

How to create a monster by JoJo: -one: stab someone's brain with an ancient stone mask -two: stab someone's guts with your little finger Why people believe this anime is bizarre again? xD Good call with the Demon Slayer ref, vampires and demons are kinda the same, ditto for hamon users and katana breathing techniques ;) And...now I have to wait your next reactions...oh well I'll have two of them now, fine by me :p

kamenriderhime

Hahahaha I can't imagine why :P Yay, glad I nailed it with the reference!! I hope you love my reactions, so happy you're looking forward to them!!!!!!!
