Hey everyone!  I'm back today with episode 1 of Andor!!!  We're off to quite a start, doing some learning, worldbuilding, etc.  It's interesting to slowly unfold Cassian's past, complete with flashbacks!  I still have a lot of questions and I'm curious to see where it all goes from here.  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Usually, when they decide to start off a series by releasing this many episodes at once you can kind of tell… they’re sending a signal, we need some time to develop our base plot. That being said, before I pop into this I will say I’ve started using subtitles on shows… not because I can’t hear or understand, but because I’ve found them super helpful, especially when trying to figure out who’s who, I usually get character names down quicker. I know you don’t normally do it for English language shows except RvB, but you might want to consider it. Also you wouldn’t have to worry about talking over something important during reactions if it’s already there. Some of the dialogue in this series was almost inaudible without them, although it was nothing serious. Anyway, just something to think about. It’s always kind of hard to balance what you need to do as a story writer and what you want to do in a pilot episode, because you have to lay so much groundwork without feeling like your writing an exposé. Cassias seems to be searching for his sister, and has gotten in a pinch because two off duty corporate lackeys decided to cause trouble for him. The first death was accidental, the second was a survival tactic. He’s already in trouble after the accidental death. So why leave a living, untrustworthy witness? It’s cold, and calculating, but it also makes sense, and it wasn’t like the guy was a hero. Even the chief engineer said he was a terrible person. It seems like the security teams on Morlana One don’t want the Empire sniffing around their operations. They just want to be left alone… too bad this one guy has to be so by the book. It seems Cassian doesn’t really have a whole lot of close friends but acquaintances he keeps taking advantage of, and it’s starting to backfire on him. Although it was quite funny when Vetch (the big walrus dude) ratted out the guy asking for his money back. “He just told. E I needed to stand here!” So one timeline in present day… another set of events that occurred in the past…? This sounds suspiciously like something else you’re currently watching… 👀

You asked about the timeline Mel. It said at the start (for the first time officially this time metric is used outside of the fanbase) : BBY 5, 5 years Before the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope. This is also around the time of season 1 of Rebels, so you can gauge where things are Rebel Alliance wise. I think the flashbacks take place during The Clone Wars by the looks of things, or very early Empire. That opening sequence is very reminiscent of Bladerunner in aesthetics and music too.

Oh thanks for the info! I didn't realize that's what it meant! I know that's a pretty widely used metric in the fandom. I can totally see some Bladerunner vibes too!!

I've never been totally comfortable using that time, though have gotten used to it over the years. I personally think year 0 should have been at the birth of the Empire in Revenge Of The Sith; but the reason this one is used is because year 0 can then be for the first film, and in universe it was the first serious blow the rebels inflicted on the Empire by destroying the first Death Star at Yavin.

kamenriderhime

Yeah I get that reasoning with year 0! But I also get the reasoning for why it's used in-universe now too! Cool that they're making use of it on screen now!!

kamenriderhime

Yup, that's what I figured too! Oh good call about the subs!!! I've seen other reactors do that too! Very true, you have to tell without telling basically. It's tough! Yeah, I get the reasoning for Cassian here, and not that the individual being a terrible person makes it right but.....I just get it, that's all! Oh yeah nothing is getting left alone after what happened in these first three eps haha, this one dude had to be so by the book and it's for sure gonna call a lot of attention to them! Good point that Cassian is wheeling and dealing here without many close relationships or bonds to speak of. HAHAHAHA oh wow yeah, I think I see the parallel you're drawing here...!!!
