Hey everyone!  I'm back today with a MOVIE reaction for you guys!!!!  Omg, I cannot overstate how much I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!  It made me laugh, it made me cry a LOT, it got me thinking, it got me dancing....13/10 stars you guys <3333  I loved the music and really appreciated all of the details that went into both the visuals and the plot.  There's so many subtle (and even not so subtle) hints at what's going on that it feels like piecing together a puzzle about this family picture.  I thought all the characters got a decent amount of time for development considering the actual movie runtime was like 90 mins and, as they say in the opening song, "there's so many people"!!!  What a great message and so especially important in today's hustle and bustle times - that it's okay to take a break, it's okay to be less than perfect, and YOU ARE NOT YOUR GIFTS!!!  I don't know who needs to hear this but YOU ARE SPECIAL and you shine/burn incredibly bright in your own way <333  In short, big thumbs up you guys :D  Thanks for recommending this!  Should I watch more movies?  Let me know!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) Oh boy, there a lot to say about Bruno... about the movie I mean. First, I love how the movie start with "abre los ojos, open your eyes" and the last song, almost end with "open your eyes, abre los ojos". It's a good way to close the circle. I also like the fact that at the beginning of the film, when Abuela tells her past to little Mirabel, it is very watered down, Abuelo disappears and is said to be "lost". But when the older Mirabel sees this same scene again, everything is raw and real, without leaving the slightest detail hidden, it shows for me both the evolution in age of Mirabel and her ability to accept the harshness of the reality but also the fact that Abuela accepts her past. Because when she arrives near the river, she doesn't say that's where Pedro died, but that's where the miracle was given to her, she doesn't want to remember the traumas of the past or share them , but Mirabel will make her understand that we have to talk about it, that it has to get out. The visible pain on the face of young Alma (the name of Abuela), is also something rare in a Disney movie, but really necessary and appreciated in my opinion. And generally speaking, the facial expressions in this movie are top notch. I mean, when Mirabel tells Abuela that she's the one breaking the family, you can almost see the click in her. During "The family Madrigal" you can already see the crack in the wall through which Bruno looks at his family, small detail, but I like it. "Maybe your gift is being in denial" this sentence makes me laugh every time, it is harsh, but children are not known to soften what they say. "We have a new gift" and with the fireworks, you can see Dolores cover her ears, poor her. Because it's another element of the film, Mirabel and the Encanto focus on the gifts and the good they bring, forgetting the other side, Pepa who must constantly control her emotions, Julietta who spends her life in the kitchen, Luisa who solves all the physical problem of the Encanto... Now, a little bit about Isabela, because she's my favorite character from the movie. First, we can see pretty early on that she isn't interested in marriage, when Dolores says Mariano wants five babies, her expression shows it. Abuela by the way removes the only flower of a different color in Isabela's hair, to make it more "perfect" right after... In "We don't talk about Bruno", all of her verse seems to show that her vision is awesome, while it just shows that she has no control over her life... "He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised, and someday be mine" but nothing says that's already the case, so it's still a clue. Another clue is towards the end of the song, when everyone is dancing around Mirabel, Isabela's expression is closer to sadness or despair than anything else and you hear her singing "I'm fine , I'm fine", just before Mariano's proposal. During the scene between Mirabel and Isabela, Isa says: "Abuela was happy. The family was Happy", but nothing about her. Like the rest of the family, she puts others before herself, to the point of being constantly behind a mask, which she later confesses in her song with "So much hides behind my smile". But there again, "What else can I do" conceals so many sentences that hurt, "What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?", as if she had no right to let go of her emotions... And that's also the beauty of this song, the beginning shows Mirabel trying to calm down Isa who shows her insecurities, but once Mirabel understands her, she doesn't stop. support and encourage her to express herself. The "what else can I do" goes from discovering her abilities to questioning what she must do to be herself. In short, I love Isabela and her evolution (as well as the slight lesbian vibe she has towards the end), her expressions show much more life and happiness towards the very end of the film, than in all her other scenes. Afterwards, there is ONE element that bothers me in this film, it's a detail, but it's a shame that it was overlooked, it's about the doors. First, the door of Abuela bears the inscription Abuela, and not Alma, which is however her name. Then, when we see the children and their doors, especially on the photos on the wall, we can see that the doors have not changed, it shows people like Luisa or Isabela, who they are in the present of movie. While Antonio has a representation of him in the present too, so children. It's as if Disney didn't want to make a representation of the doors with the wearing of child members. The only explanation that could work for me is, if the house knew that this is when everything was going to break and that their appearance would not exceed the age they have at the time of the film. In the end, for me the real gift of Mirabel was her empathy, which helped the family to rebuild on a new basis, new foundations. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, and if you want to make another one, there's the latest Pixar release on Disney plus, which is kind of in the same genre, but with a big anime vibe too, Turning Red. The director said that some anime served as her inspiration for Turning Red, including Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon, so I know you like Sailor Moon, so here, I just said like that lol.

I’d like to point out the irony that you’re wearing a Penny shirt, who is based on Pinocchio - and the opening Disney logo music is “When You Wish Upon A Star.” Yeah, saw the movie and pretty much knew you were done for! 😅 There’s a lot of common tropes used but there’s also some fresh takes on it as well. I know who Lin-Manuel Miranda is, but I’ve never watched Hamilton, so I’m a bit lacking in that department. It’s interesting to see a movie focus on a Spanish-speaking culture that ISN’T Mexico (it’s Colombia, in case you didn’t catch that.) It’s interesting to see a new part of the world get an identifying piece of media. Mirabel is a good protagonist - her trope is a bit of a revisit, but I think the most important thing about her is that even if everything looks fine outwardly, it doesn’t mean everything is okay and they still need to be cared about. (I bring up this discussion point when talking about Ruby a lot, for example.) “It’s bigger on the inside!” “Is that a Doctor Who reference!?” Great minds think alike. 👀 I think the most polarizing character in the film is Abuela however: I picked up fairly early on that she wasn’t really treating Mirabel very well, but the more you think about it - she was really the source of the issue. It’s explained: she lost everything, and of course that would affect you. But she tried to hang on so tight to her family that she couldn’t she that she was squeezing and suffocating their lives, even though she meant well. There was a similar story where this wasn’t rectified called “The Girl in the Tower” where a similar parent did similar things and you know where THAT went. 😬 Honestly, when you kept yelling free hugs during the Isabel/Mirabel scene because of the shirt I kept thinking “do they make you feel this warm?” SOWWEE 😂. “I haven’t cried like that in a while…” I seem to remember you wearing the exact same shirt when THAT reaction took place so I’m gonna say don’t ever wear the Penny shirt without sticking tissues - I’m sure they’re connected! 😂 Movies are fun, but I do think you don’t want to overdo them either - it’s probably best to try and do one after you wrap up a season before you decide to dive into another. That being said, because the MCU films are so relevant and you can’t really wait for those because of shows, I think it might not be a bad idea to review them since they’re so critical to some of your reactions. I don’t have any film suggestions right now but I’ll let you know if I think of any. 😇

This movie hit on some very personal notes with me. Mostly with how Maribel and Bruno viewed themselves in comparison to the family and did bring up some pretty painful feelings. It was one of those movies that makes you wish everything could have a happy ending.

I hear you! I very much found myself feeling the same thing....in this particular case, issues were confronted and the love the family had for each other won out in the end. That's sadly not always the case / it's more complicated. :( I think family issues bring up lots of feels for folks and you're not alone in that!!!

Hi Spadeas! :) Ooohhh that's a great point about the visual representation of Mirabel's ability as well as Abuela's acceptance! Couldn't agree more about the facial expressions too. Oh I didn't notice the crack during the first song!! The denial line is amazing haha. And yeah, this movie really focuses on the other side of having "superpowers" which is interesting. I really agree about Isabella too, the more I think about it, she's such an interesting layered character and a lot of aspects of her situation sort of remind me of Weiss too. That line in the Bruno song definitely has a different meaning than how it initially sounds!! Isabella's evolution is really great and I love the details you mentioned here! Some of them I caught, some of them I didn't. I love that she finds herself and her happiness!! Ah yes, I saw another YT video that called out the Abuela inscription haha. Maybe it changes over time? But yeah, the other ones haven't so....!!! That's a good explanation though about the age! Yes!!!! I agree that Mirabel's real gift was her empathy. I'm hearing SO much about Turning Red!!! I'd love to see it! So cool that there's lots of anime inspiration too!!! Thank you so much!!

That was fantastic! I’m glad I got to watch it with you! When she took out the stuffed animal, and at the end you did too 😭 I was like, “oh no, two best girls!” ❤️ So right that it’s taxing being perfect all the time like I am 💁🏻‍♂️ lol jk but still very true. It’s not perfect if you’re not truly happy being yourself. And Mirabel knew that from the beginning. Now let’s dance and talk about Bruno! 🎉 💃🏽 🕺🏿 🎊

kamenriderhime

Hahaha yes it was unintentional but it is a bit ironic huh!!! OHHH the wish upon a star thing....hadn't even thought of that </3 Hamilton was really good, you might enjoy it if you liked these musical stylings! Yeah, I should have known from the way folks were hyping it up that I was done for haha. That's such a good point that they varied things a bit with the country they focused on - I didn't realize until afterwards that it was supposed to be Columbia! Such a good point about Mirabel - the strong/happy one isn't necessarily invincible (particularly emotionally speaking). Hahahaha glad I wasn't the only one thinking it about the Who reference! :P Oohhhh there are lots of great RWBY comparisons including the Girl in the Tower reference which yeah....didn't end quite as nicely as this did :P Abuela is a complex character for sure. HAHAHAHA my heart instantly shatters when I hear "hugs" and "warm" in the same sentence now!!!! >.< OMG, so, I came THIS CLOSE to saying "last time I cried this much [actually more] I was wearing this shirt"!!!! But I didn't wanna throw out any potential Penny spoilers for anyone who hadn't seen RWBY!!! :P Good point about movies, I don't think I could do more than one or so a month anyway with my current schedule! A review of the MCU is a good idea! Thanks so much :D

kamenriderhime

YAY!!!! Thanks for watching along with me!!! Ahhhhhh squeeee you're so kind to say I'm a fellow best girl to Mirabel!!! <33333 I love making stuffed animals, I couldn't handle seeing it on screen haha. Hehehe the struggle is real ;) But yeah, for sure, perfect is being true to yourself, not living out a life that you think others want you to! Mirabel was so sharp on all this! OMG YESSSSSS dance time and LOTS of talking about Bruno please :D

kamenriderhime

Hola Hime, God when my "baby sister" ( lil' RWBY fan there ) made me watch that movie, I told her that I hoped you'd consider reacting to the movie. You don't know how much you've made my day :) If you like the song "We don't talk about Bruno", Disney made a video with the song in 21 languages, and with the visuals the result is worth it, the transitions are so well made If you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VqbiF3EBvA Obviously loved your reaction, thanks for the work and have a good time :) [ I hope my english isn't that rusty, the pressure of not being a native :p]

kamenriderhime

Your english is AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for your comment! :D Awww love the "baby sister" reference! I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!!!! It makes MY day to know that! :) Whoa, thanks for sharing the video, that's so cool! I'd love to check it out! Thank you again!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

Hi Melissa. I’ve just discovered your movie section and so I’ll watch these as they look good. Have you ever seen the film ‘When Marnie Was There’ by Studio Ghibli? If not, then I think that would be a great movie to react to, as it genuinely beautiful, absorbing and moving.
