Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 23 of the final season of AoT!  Wow!!!  We get some major introspection from Annie, a heartbreaking conversation between Armin and Mikasa, some beautifully hopeful friendship between Gabi (erm, Mia) and Kaya, Floch being a huge jerk, and Conny doing some REAL morally questionable stuff to get his mom back (poor Falco!!!)!!!  Oh, and last but not least....HANGEEEEEE!!!!  And Levi!!!!  XD XD XD   Team-up time PLEASE!!!!  I think we can all agree that we definitely don't want what Eren is selling right now, no matter where we land on literally every other issue in the world lol.  What a great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I love this episode. The location at the beginning was actually a mistake it’s supposed to be Stohess which is 1 of the outermost districts of the innermost wall which makes it very likely that Annie & Hitch will be encountering Conny and Falco as well as Armin and Gabi which needless to say will be complicated at least that’s what I think will happen. it’s great that they showed the aftermath of all the walls crumbling. It really shows the moral ambiguity with how different people are reacting. The unfortunate thing is that Eren could not warn anyone since his friends would have tried to stop him and it happened instantaneously it does seem like he instructed them to avoid towns after the initial destruction the falling walls created. It is a very deliberate parallel with this woman whose house was destroyed by Titans because what other character did something like that happen to Eren he went from the one affected by destruction to the one creating destruction. It is really messed up that way more people are in the ends justify the means mindset but thanks to the people of Paradis being oppressed/killed/hated so much it makes perfect sense that Eren’s actions and the Jaegerist ideology would be very appealing. It sucks that it’s getting so bad in terms of potential conflict and violence. Also an interesting background detail is someone throws a punch at the end of the 1st scene although it’s hard to tell which side it comes from. If you want to know what’s going on in Shigashina Hitch some crazy shit that’s what. They do a great job of showing how tense Hitch is when realizing Annie is out. I like the little detail that Annie left a set of footprints to make people think she was one place when she was actually behind the door. Also this whole thing is very classic Annie with the cold threats although her eyes are very dead/tired. I think her surprise is underestimating how weak she had become since Hitch is older and stronger from being a soldier with Annie muscles having most likely atrophied. Seeing them interact is so crazy because there must be so many complicated feelings going on the. Also the bluffing and calling bluffs here really intense. It is absolutely insane that Annie was conscious that entire time in complete darkness with only 2 people talking to her sounds like a nightmare. Them talking to her might have been the only thing keeping her sane. There is a really emotionally and narratively great thing about it being those 2 talking to her only with the connections they have. It sucks that Hitch has a dark job of cleaning up the death and destruction it seems like she now wants to do so much good now just like Marlowe but now can’t. I want to mention that people ship Annie & Hitch and I can see it but I do think Annie/Armin is more interesting. I really loved to see so much introspection from Annie and it only makes sense. Even though it’s really late in the story I really love Annie’s back story. It’s terrible that just being half Eldia is enough to treat them badly leading to Annie being orphaned. Even if it’s sad/heartwarming now it sucks that when 1st taking her in Annie’s father was only doing it out of selfishness and not caring. Seeing the harsh near abusive training is rough but really explains why she was so good and strong. Someone pointed out these martial arts are similar to Muay Thai from Thailand telling us Mr. Leonhart is most likely from the AOT equivalent of Thailand which isn’t super important but is an interesting detail. Seeing him so happy that she is so strong while being permanently crippled is horrifying and disturbing. The meta commentary of this your life story is hilarious. Of course she would see no value in any life. It’s really depressing that he did not realize he had grown to love her as a daughter until it was too late sort of similar to the whole Grisha/Zeke thing. It’s great that it wasn’t affecting Annie until she looked into his eyes and could see his sincerity. I love that she completely understands how terrible her actions were and how everyone has someone more important to them than anything else which is why she would do those terrible things again to be with her father. I feel like Hitch is just thankful to understand her better even if it doesn’t make her happy. Then the harsh reality of what the rumbling will do is brought up. Also I need to mention how amazing it is to see the colossal Titans just constantly in the background like it’s no big deal when it’s so horrifying really good scale. And can we just appreciate the shot of the colossal’s with the sunset at their backs really sells the horror. Since people were wondering why Eren would want to kill the internment zone Eldian’s but with their self-hatred and hatred towards Paradis as soon with Reiner’s mother of course Eren would consider them enemies. I like that we see most of the parents of the warriors including Falco’s mother for the 1st time and Pieck’s father the man coughing in the background. It’s such a frustrating situation to see the soldiers of Marley not believe them but with the extreme racism and how they treat them it sadly makes sense. I like that Mr. Leonhart appeals to what the soldiers care about rather than get them to care about the Eldians since they don’t see them as human. It’s so interesting whenever we get to see Annie reacting emotionally seeing her promise is really heartbreaking considering the situation. I actually don’t think her father died here because they cut away and the show has never been shy with showing gruesome details. I love the entire scene with Shadis and the cadets he saved. It’s a really great moment for his character because he has truly accepted that while not everyone is special that doesn’t mean he can’t do some good for the world and lead the next generation even in such a terrible situation. The sad thing is he definitely knows he’s going to die. I love that these cadets were some of the ones who beat him up and and now they want to protect him and he wants to protect them. It’s great that he only didn’t fight back because they were in danger. The whole line don’t disobey is scary because it’s so easy and makes sense as a justification in historical things that have happened. The crazy thing about the whole you can rise against this terrible regime one day is he's not guaranteeing they will succeed and just because you know something is wrong doesn’t mean you will be strong enough to fight against it. Also the funny thing in a dark/ironic way is he’s asking them to be bystanders. I think part of what the conversation between Armin & Mikasa is showing that Armin really has no idea what he will say to Conny just knows he has to do something. There actually is something so selfless about the future of humanity even if it can make a friend hate him. The thing is hate and fighting will never go away no matter what certain characters think or say so this is such an important thing to think about at least where the story is. Just hearing how tired he is hurts and it must be how a lot of characters must be feeling. Also Mikasa at this point just looks like a sad kitten and I hate to see it. That line from him about thinking for herself is much harsher in the manga apparently but I could tell it was mean because she is just so lost at this point. This entire panic attack/breakdown from Armin here is really highlighting the weight and pressure that is on his shoulders especially with Levi & Hange gone or dead. It also puts the scope and all the factors of the chaos currently happening into perspective. In his head he needs to get control of/do something good at this point and saving Falco is something relatively simple he can do right now. I definitely believe they’re going to figure out a way to stop Eren but I have no idea how and it is bleak to be honest Armin just needs time to think and he can’t at least he can focus on one thing with what he’s doing now. Thinking Erwin should have been chosen is definitely his self-doubt/self-hatred and guilt coming through because it is impossible to know what the right choice in that situation or if there even was one. However I do think from a story standpoint with the themes in the show that it was the only choice that made sense as the author was writing the story. Someone said something in a comment about Mikasa that made me really sad she has been having the worst 24 hours Eren said he hates her, that she has no free will, he’s destroying the world, Armin just blew up at her and her scarf is gone all her comforts are gone. Also I think Louise took the scarf to give back to her/keep safe. Hearing Sasha’s father talking about the hesitance Conny will probably have is really heartwarming because of course he would know him quite well Sasha probably talked about him maybe even introduced him to her family during the time skip. This actually brings up something I forgot to mention about the last episode that everyone has darkness or goodness inside them it just depends on the circumstance of their lives and capacity for good or evil. Sasha’s father just has a natural capacity for good it’s a miracle he turned out this way in this world I agree that he should be in charge. Unfortunately much of the time people in charge are not like that even when I do believe there are a lot of people like Mr. Braus out there. I love seeing this relationship develop and this interaction with Sasha’s family it’s really heartwarming and represents the best of humanity. Someone pointed out that Kaya likes Mia as an name better because it was the best parts of Gabi. Also she most likely hasn’t even forgiven her (maybe started to) but has realized the pointlessness of her hatred. That hug really does represent hope. Okay listen Floch may be an asshole but you have to admit he is so well written as a antagonist character you are supposed to hate. He’s a smug, arrogant prick and I love to hate him. Also he makes the best faces and I hate it the animators love to animate him and it makes sense. I think I can simplify a lot of what I want to say about him the scary part about Floch is how human he really is. There is something so twisted about his speeches and ideology it’s terrifying that he most certainly truly believes every single thing he says. I do believe Eren told him the entire plan because he is the perfect subordinate considering his experiences and the beliefs he was already starting to display in season 3 and wouldn’t try to stop him. Also the sheer audacity of him to hear who put you in charge and immediately go into a monologue. The submission speech is him spinning it as submission will give you freedom which is just yikes and I don’t know if Eren would agree with that. Also seeing his brutality and merciless is horrifying. Everything about his conversation with Jean is about tempting him into giving up because he doesn’t want to constantly be fighting and there is a part of him that wants what Floch is offering but all his character development has revealed a drive to do good. I think seeing Onyankopon’s disappointment snapped him out of it since he was barely able to respond before this being in so much shock. Floch represents the theme of there being no such thing as black and white/good and evil because the people who think that way like him are crazy. It’s insane that we were seeing his villain backstory back in season 3 without knowing it. There are 2 interesting/sad/dark details here Jean is constantly facing away from the broken wall where you can see the rumbling because he can’t or doesn’t want to look at it and Yelena has to be physically lifted and dragged away she is just that broken. The way Floch says freedom is chilling. It sucks that Conny is lying to and using Falco especially with the flashback of his family asking him to become a soldier that protects everyone. There is a strange sort of irony/parallel with Reiner with the whole soldier/warrior thing and the type of soldiers Marley creates. It’s depressing that Falco doesn’t remember his brother and Marcel are dead imagine what will happen when he finds out I’m not sure he even remembers his love confession. You can already see some hesitation with Conny’s reaction to his gratitude. I love the reveal of Hange and Levi some much needed levity it is both hilarious and tense. A ship between her and Pieck exists because of the love of Titans thing and their intelligence. I cannot fathom Levi being out of commission for the rest of the series he will get back up before the end of the show. This is definitely the episode of unlikely character combinations with Armin & Gabi and Levi/Hange/Pieck/Magath as well as others. Just imagine the interactions and situations that will unfold because of this. I am so worried about what will happen in the next episode because I can totally see some death happening I hope I am wrong. Great reaction and I am both excited and dreading the next episode I can’t wait. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Hey!!! Sorry for the delay! I was just about to reply this morning!! Ah ok, that makes sense about the parallel! The tension and bluffing/escalation with Annie and Hitch is amazing!!! Also interesting about the Annie/Hitch ship, and I know they've hinted at the Armin/Annie ship due to him having Berthold's memories. Not sure if anyone is good enough for my little boy though!!!!! :P Oh that's actually a great point that Annie and her dad parallel Grisha and Zeke in a way! I get that now about how the Marley/outside Eldians have the self-hatred, so maybe that's why Eren doesn't feel "bad" taking them out too. Also trying to convince the Marley soldiers was soooo frustrating, cool to see them bring in familiar characters just for added detail though. Shadis' conversation is so sad and interesting, it really does set the stage for there to be an uprising against the Jaegerists later on which means the cycle will just keep, well, cycling. Awwww poor Mikasa!!!!!!!!!!! Ooh excellent point about Mia vs. Gabi! Uggh Floch is just the right person to terrifyingly cling to an extremist plan like this one, and dang the dude didn't waste any time when it comes to monologuing lol. Yeah I doubt Eren would agree on the submission parts though. Those are interesting details about Jean and Yelena! Yeah Conny doesn't seem so determined on this at the end of the ep and I was just praying he wouldn't go through with it. And so sad that Falco doesn't remember any of the deaths or most likely his love confession either. OMG the team-up they're hinting at is epic!!! Can't wait for you to see my reaction to the next ep, it's up now!!! Thank you so much for all your kindness and support!!! ^_^
