Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 22 of the final season of AoT!  WHOAAAAA!!!!  Not only do we get unlikely allies joining forces, our crew trying to make sense of what the heck is happening, and an epic pure Titan battle that harkens back to days of old.....but we also got a LITTLE HINT at the end there!!!  Dang guys!!!!  Some of the heart to heart stuff in this ep (particularly as it pertained to Sasha's family, Conny, etc.) really hit me right in the feels.  What on earth will happen now that a Marley person of great power and intensity has just awoken inside Paradis?!?!?!  We'll find out!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

What a great episode. One thing I forgot to mention in my last comment is the theme of desperation that seems to be going on. A lot of Eren’s actions seem driven by desperation at this point because of the world and these situations. This must be because he has been trying to defy fate but everything leads to the future he saw for example how he had been trying different options 1st before the rumbling looked to be the only option. It’s particularly sad because someone I watch pointed out how Eren screaming at the end of the opening could be interpreted as asking the universe why it has to be this way which is downright depressing. Seeing the aftermath of everything that happened last episode is great and my favorite part is all the reactions, choices and decisions characters are making and it seems like only more hard decisions/choices are in store next episode. It’s just an example of showing how even more messed up that a child being a bargaining chip is in the cards. It really sucks to see Reiner in this state filled with such regret and despair after just getting some resolve and life back to be able to save the kids he’s really just a tired soldier. I like that the hint for Annie with Reiner losing his armor was at the beginning of the episode and I really should have realized it since I was already thinking of Annie because of the title Thaw and how the crystal she is in looks like ice. The reality of the situation is really starting to sink in. The way he whispers that yes everyone will die is painful especially because it seems almost impossible to do anything to stop Eren. It is great to see Gabi not give up and show off the determination and resolve that very much makes her a parallel of Eren putting her hair up and everything but I love that the hair wasn’t just to make a parallel with him in the story but also with Sasha ): <3. Jean saying all this stuff justifying what’s going on really feels like he is trying to convince himself even if the world did create the monster that is Eren. This is obviously too far but as someone I watch said genocide is almost too light a word for this. Whether or not they can actually do anything to him I think the important thing the show is asking is if they can bring themselves to when Eren is doing this for them. Also when they say he’s sacrificing humanity for them I think you can see it as sacrificing his own humanity as well. I love how after the flashback is shown there is complete silence only showing the reaction in the 4 of their eyes. But then the pure Titans show back up and it really must be that Eren Can’t control them possibly having to focus on the colossal’s or my thought letting it happen so everyone will unite together. The fact they are even considering sacrificing Falco to save someone shows how bad it has gotten. Conny wanting to save his mother makes perfect sense even if it’s a bad time after visiting her like she is over all this time. He is definitely done with everything after all the betrayals and Armin trying to stop this must just feel like another betrayal. Conny is completely acting emotionally understandable but the sad thing he isn’t thinking about is his mother most likely would not want to come back if it was thanks to the death of a child and it’s only 13 years and others might ask for her help against Eren. There is definitely a season one feel to all the fear of the Titans and I love it because of what it allowed to happen later. Also I think Yelena might just be broken at this point without Zeke in control. I would like to remind you if you don’t remember that this song Barricades it 1st appears at the end of season 2 when Historia had her last conversation with Ymir and was awesome killing titans and our group was rallying together. It’s a great song that really represents the theme of the show freedom and what it might cost to get it. I love how the writer was able to take a small character like Shadis and made him so interesting with the Bystander episode and gave him great character development. He is no longer a bystander and seeing him become a great leader is awesome. I love getting to see Jean’s leadership skills on display and everyone coming together. I love that you brought up that now they know what titans are and have grief over it but wanting to honor them is really heartwarming and emotional at least I think. It was so awesome to see that good old ODM gear action again. Then on the tower leading all the Titans to 1 place is definitely a reference to being in the basement against the small titans with shotguns in season one and jumping off the tower (that rotation animation was fantastic by the way) I think is a reference to all the scouts falling from the sky in the 1st opening and jumping off the wall in the season 2 opening. Having to take out Pyxis like a rabid or dying dog is so sad especially with the memories of how he gave them the 1st opportunity to protect themselves when they saved Trost but he deserved not to have to live like this. Also I want to out they gave the best animation to Mikasa and I like how she saved Louise again. This was such a nostalgic part and a love letter to season one so great. It must be so much simpler being what they were trained to do. It’s so terrifying to see Niccolo and Sasha’s family chased by poor Nile : (. The intensity of the scene is so great especially with the frantic and panicked voice acting. Poor Kaya having to go through some PTSD and how close this was really makes you feel despair. But even if Sasha isn’t here to help Gabi rescues her putting her military training to good use with what can only be described as a trick shot. It’s so emotional for Kaya to see Sasha in her. And while Gabi didn’t need a redemption just development this certainly was a redemption in her own eyes. I love that everyone even people she has wronged protect her makes me want to cry. From the look in her eyes you can tell it’s still hard to believe there can be such great people. The entire conversation about the devil inside all people is so poignant and powerful and so true. There is darkness inside us all but we have to try to rise above it and get away from the violent world even if we can’t. It’s not about having literal monsters inside proven by the Marleyen Niccolò saying it. Also the image of Gabi and Kaya next to each other is so good. It’s so sad to see this somber conversation between Jean and Onyankapon and the harsh reality of this situation. And of course Floch survives he’s like a cockroach. I feel like you lived represents a lot of people’s feelings towards him. I was hoping maybe he reconsidered some things but no still an interesting character but God dammit. The final conversation with Gabi this episode is so good but so heartbreaking. Seeing her collapse to the ground with so much regret hurts and the voice acting is painful and her words really shows her development. She has very good and valid questions but unfortunately Eren doesn’t seem to want to talk or listen. The Annie reveal is amazing and creates really interesting opportunities and possible situations and she definitely got out before Eren’s speech and heard it all must be so confused how would you even begin to explain the 5 years she missed. Also coming out of the crystal does not look pleasant. It is weird and kind of amazing that we have such a hopeful episode after the end of the world has started. There is hope for Falco since Conny will be slowed down and his town is far away and Annie is known for her speed in Titan form. I personally feel they are settling up a lot of team ups between friends and enemies and everything in between for even the possibility of stopping Eren and I think the interactions will be incredible. I think you had a great discussion here. I really enjoyed your reaction it was awesome. I can’t wait to see the next reaction. Next episode is going to be really interesting. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Oh no, I totally missed both comments!!! Thanks for reposting! I agree about the desperation, and yes, one of the most interesting things on this show is not only the action, but seeing the personal/character moments of how it's affecting everyone and their decisions. Yeah the "thaw" makes sense considering the crystal kinda looks like ice! Ohhhh I didn't even catch the parallel to Eren with putting the hair up, but yeah, it totally works as a parallel to both Eren and Sasha! I mean, you make an interesting point about everyone maybe having to unite against Eren....could that be the real plan? Give everyone a common enemy?? Idk....!! For sure, Conny's mom wouldn't want this, but yeah, you totally can't blame him in a way! Ohhh thanks for the reminder about the song!!! And yeah, the titan killing takes on a whole new meaning when it's almost to end their suffering and honor them because we actually knew them previously! Glad you enjoyed my insights on that :) Yes, the ODM gear! And saving Louise!!! Such great callbacks. Oof I know, so sad, the scene with Kaya and Sasha's family being chased...!! Kaya and Gabi totally made me wanna cry too!!! And the "devil" conversation was just so utterly true. Uggghhh Floch!!! Gabi's character development has been really well done! Yessss Annie! The de-crystallization totally reminds me of being thawed out of carbonite in Star Wars lol. I really hope there's a chance we'll stop Conny! It's gonna be so interesting to see all the interactions!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed my discussion and reaction, yay!!!! Sorry for missing your original comment, I'm glad I got to read through your thoughts on the ep!!!! Thanks again for all the support and kindness ^_^
