Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to Arcane ep 5!!!  Whoa, so much going on in this one!  VI IS BACK, YEEESSSSS!!!  Omg, her interactions with Caitlyn have got me SO excited!!!!!!!!!!!!  XD  They are such a fun duo and I love the fun and how should I say....flirtiness???  That being said, it's pretty heartbreaking to watch Vi find out what's happened to Powder, and to watch Powder fully embrace Jinx.  Also, Viktor nooooo!!!  Jayce has found...love??  I guess?  YAY???  I'm still uneasy about this whole Game of Thrones situation...!!!  Can't wait to see where things go from here!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Sometimes the most unlikely pairs make the best ones. (RWBY taught us that!) I find it wonderful that Caitlyn was a protege of Grayson, because as we know from this scene and her previous interactions with Vander and the council, she was a woman of decent morals. Who would much rather have a sort of stable peace between the two parts of the city and advocating on their behalf when seemingly no one else on her side will, as opposed to other Piltovans and Enforcers who would much rather act like the undercity's problems don't exist. Her dynamic with Caitlyn almost mimics Vi's own relationship dynamic with Vander, as in Vander and Grayson inspired a large part of their personalities and lives - Caitlyn wanting to help people as an Enforcer and Vi wanting to do right by the undercity and protect her family. So it's almost like Vander and Grayson's relationship as just passed onto Vi and Caitlyn in a way... of course they still have to work out a few things but it is an interesting thing to think about! So Vi has been in prison the entire time skip (which we know is about 7-8 years) meaning that she spent most of her teenage and early young adult life in there, getting abused physically, and no doubt mentally by enforcers the entire time. All while living with the idea that she was taken away from her sister and the survivors guilt of everything that happened... poor Vi - I didn't notice this till now but you can actually see her flinch and nervously roll her shoulder as she hears footsteps coming towards her cell, like she was preparing herself and ouch it hurt alot. (Also just for clarification Vi attacked the inmate because he was one of Silco's goons and it's implied she does that to the others that work for him that end up in Stillwater). "In what mad world would I trust someone like you?" well, if that isnt the start of a wonderful partnership in the future I don't know what is! Also, it's a funny but very well thought out detail that Caitlyn was able to forge Jayce's signature for a file on the spot like that, she's known him almost her whole life AND has been in close proximity of him for most of it as well, not out of pocket to believe she would be able to do that. Also Caitlyn getting Vi released from prison is probably the first nice thing anyone from Piltover has ever done for Vi... which is sort of like, really sad. And yes, this will be a wonderful journey of unlearning pre-instilled prejudices and checking her privileges' for Caitlyn. While Marcus is by no means my favourite character, especially because of his involvement in a lot of what happened previously, I do feel sort of bad for him. He basically inherited Vander and Grayson's deal except with Silco, who doesn't have the same ideals or ideas as Vander for the undercity or Piltover. He's trying to maintain the same peace that Grayson did with Vander between the undercity and topside, but the difference is, Silco doesn't want peace, he wants change. And he'll do anything to achieve that, and it isn't like Marcus has the power to stop him unless he wants all out war between the two cities. But on another hand, Marcus has seemingly been working with Silco for as long as the time skip, essentially being his inside man up topside, and with his new position as Sheriff that gives Silco the power to manipulate information as he sees fit with Marcus' help - example: Marcus is pining the blame for Jinx's attack on the Firelight gang that is stopping Silco's trade deals to avoid people tracking it back to Silco or Jinx. Marcus for all his loud statements about taking down the corrupt people in the undercity is seemingly unable to do so and because of that has even found himself working for the most powerful and arguably most corrupt of them all. It's a complicated situation yes, but Marcus keeps digging his own grave the longer he does what Silco actually asks of him. I understand Jayce's position, he was immediately thrust into a powerful position that he has no real prior experience with and now has to make some important calls with the weight of that position on his back, but I also understand Viktor's position; he wants to use Hextech for it's intended purpose (to help people live better lives) as quickly as possible because he may not actually be around to see that happen otherwise if they decide to put it off. It, once again, is a tricky situation. Poor Powder/Jinx... ghosts of the mind are the hardest to dispel. Seeing Vi let herself feel the adrenaline of being free again is kinda cathartic. I can't imagine what 7-8 years in prison from teenage years to early adulthood would be like. And yes, they actually made a female brawler buff!! I love it! The obvious difference in parkour skill between Cait and Vi is hilarious. Actually their whole dynamic is kinda funny, their convo at Jericho's with Cait pacing around and rambling while Vi just doesn't seem to care and keeps eating, pretty funny to me at least. And example number one of Caitlyn learning things about the undercity - typical enforcer interrogation won't get them anything, if you want information you usually have to offer something in return - in this particular case it was Vi's happy consumption and compliments of Jericho's food. Mel is definitely playing a game of chess while everyone else seems to be playing checkers. She's definitely using Jayce to work towards something, but mayhaps that will also lead to something...else? It's very symbolic tho that Heimerdinger is enjoying the performance that the pretty Piltovan musician is playing all the while in blissful ignorance on what's happening behind the scenes with the arrangements. Ahh yes Caitlyn and Vi are very good friends.... not gonna lie, as someone who really really really likes Vi, when I watched this episode the first time I had to take a moment after the "you're hot cupcake" scene. Silco and Jinx's dynamic is very interesting, but Silco's way of dealing with traumatizing events isn't exactly the healthiest way to cope with what Powder/Jinx is dealing with. Letting your younger self "die" doesn't seem like the healthiest thing to me either, but that could also stem from Silco's ideology of "being reborn to do the things the younger and weaker you never could". It's just sad because on one hand all Powder ever wanted to do was help her family and her home, she was a genuine and sweet little girl who went through something horrific, and on the other Jinx is the super capable, badass - she's everything Powder ever wanted to be for her family but because of a culmination of factors (Silco's influence, the state of the undercity, the feeling of Vi "abandoning" her, etc) she's become ruthless and, because let's be real she is, a murderer/terrorist. Honestly, most people in this show need therapy but Jinx and maybe even Silco need it the most. Not only was Caitlyn okay playing her role, she also inadvertently answered Vi's previous question; "what will it be man or woman?" Vi and Sevika's fight is so brutal and so well animated! But like in the best way!! It's so visceral and filled with the emotions of betrayal, anger and hate - and a tiny pinch of competitiveness; a desire to one up the other. Although I'd argue that Sevika was sort of cheating since her arm sort of injects her with Shimmer which we know is an enhancement drug. And yet, Vi still won initially - she freaking kicked Sevika through the wall. That stab was low, but saying "she's like his daughter" to Vi was even lower... I mean to Vi, Silco is the man that ruined her family and her life... to have that said about her sister and him would've hurt more than any wound ever would. We see Caitlyn is as competent a shooter as she was when she was younger, a quick and sharp shot and a quick reloader - love that. It's also important to note that Caitlyn didn't shoot a kill shot on Sevika when she clearly could have, implying that Cait doesn't shoot to kill. Instead, she shot Sevika enough to scare her away, and in turn protecting an injured Vi. She answered Grayson's question from earlier in the episode. "What are you shooting for?" To protect people. I love their semi-flirtatious banter, and yes we do ship them. Or at least I do. And thus the prodigal sister returns from the "dead" in the eye of the man who took her family away. Very very interesting future developments in sight! Anyways Im going to end my ramblings and very very long rantings here! Excellent reaction as always! Hope you have a great day/night!

Hi Hime :) The ship is sailing, I repeat, the ship is sailing. Welcome aboard the Vi/Caitlyn ship, where everyone who watched Arcane, end. I said in the previous episode that you were going to like the Vi/Caitlyn relationship, that's what I was thinking. I know how much you love our bees, so I was sure you were going to get on the ship soon enough. Personally, I love their dynamic, but I'm a sucker when it comes to women in love you know me ^^. Well about the episode, Marcus is not a bad guy, but he made the wrong decisions to have "power", it didn't work as he wanted... His reaction in front of Grayson's grave, shows all the same that he respected and regrets it. He knows it won't come close to her, but he hopes to redeem it. Piltover and the underground, works much like Gotham City in Batman, the rich and powerful living in peace in a corrupt world and the poor in misery and crime, the two being connected by crime lords working and paying the police, and politician "benefiting" from the crimes. Yes, Vi is quite muscular, she spent all her time in prison training after all. As you see with Sevika (the one with the robotic arm who fights Vi), she is not the only muscle woman in the series and you will see another one later on, who, sorry for being a simp, I would call her "mommy" without problem lmao. I like the fact that Jinx, despite the years that have passed and her evolution, can't beat Vi's max score on the machine, it shows that bare-knuckle combat is not for her, but Vi's specialty and further heightens Jinx's insecurity over her sister. You should remind me when you finish the series, to give you links to youtube videos, from a therapist, who analyzed the Jinx/Silco and Vi/Caitlyn relationship, I think it might interest you.

In the scene with Markus at his desk, the picture he got from his child, you can see a woman floating in the sky

Ah, I love this episode so much, really great reaction! There's so much going on it's hard to really know what to comment on dsfs but just a few things that come to mind: the visuals continue to be really great, both on the larger scale and just character design wise. I absolutely loooove Vi's design, she looks so cool and tough and ugh, I really dig it. Also just all the beautiful sequences, the whole parkour with Vi and Cait, getting to see more of the undercity, all the cool graffiti style art and neon lights everywhere really tickles me. And yeah, people definitely do ship Vi and Cait, and for good reason, that whole "you're hot, cupcake" scene is pretty easy to read that way. Neat bonus, Vi asks Cait if she's into men or women, and then later after she leaves the manager's office we see Cait's reclining with another lady and chatting her up, and Vi kinda grins to herself at that. Seems that Cait probably is into girls, and Vi seems at least a little happy about that. On a less happy note, ughhhh the stuff with Jinx really breaks my heart. Her reaction after causing the little magic pulse thingy and her flashbacks to ep 3, it's so sad to know how tormented she is over that, and then the whole thing in the arcade, her reliving the moment Vi hit her, ;w; I really want her to be happy, maybe get some therapy or something shdfs Really looking forward to next week, things are only gonna keep getting more intense from here!

"Friends, huh? Just friends?......Two people who've gone through so much together? I think there's more going on." --Nora Valkyrie (v.7) I love how Caitlyn slips into the most fake-ass Aussie accent when trying to pass herself off as "Matilda"....it really does sound like a posh Brit trying to pass herself off as Aussie. After Vi talks to the Madame, she goes down the hallway and looks over to see Caitlyn have a woman fawn over her....Vi smiles and thinks "well, that answers THAT question..." ("What'll it be, Cupcake, Man or Woman?").....

John J Ronald

It's only watching it a 2nd time that I picked up on the Baptism ritual for Jinx in the toxic river.....it means Powder is at least symbolically dead and "reborn" as Jinx....

John J Ronald

I think Viktor noticed the lab assistant flirting with him, but he blows her off because he knows he doesn't have much time left and getting attached to him would only cause her pain when his time is up....reminds me of Your Lie In April, in that way. It's sad but I understand it.

John J Ronald

And yes, that is Imagine Dragons in animated form but no it's not the complete music video, just a fragment of it.....the actual music video has a slightly different focus (no spoilers but you'll see).

John J Ronald

Vi's joyous Parkour sequence is so uplifting because she's fully embracing FREEDOM after so many years behind bars....she's full of life and JOY....you can't help but feel pumped up, too.

John J Ronald

She doesn't beat Vi's High Score, but she does win the new number 2 spot. Proving to herself she's not a little kid anymore, at least.

So, Vi has been locked up ever since Marcus dragged her away in Episode 3: should also be pointed out that Caitlyn was able to get Vi released claiming to have Jayce’s authority. (She didn’t.) As for Caitlyn herself, she might as well be playing James Bond in this episode: flashbacks, investigations, unruly allies, and… other things. When Vi steaks the jacket and tosses it to Caitlyn she says the same exact line Vander did when he was breaking up that financial transaction in Episode 1. “Welcome to the Lanes.” Caitlyn and Vi have some very misconstrued perceptions of each other, particularly when they first meet. They both have pictures in their head of how the other half must live and act, and getting over those mental images isn’t going to happen in a couple of hours together. As far as the shipping thing goes, I’m legally obliged to get the hose now that you mentioned it. Down girl. 😂 Jinx sees a bird. Jinx shoots a bird. “Was that really necessary?” “Necessary” isn’t a word really used to describe Jinx. 😏 Notice that when Jinx is sparring with the trainer again, she ended up in second place. Even after all this time, Vi is still ahead of her. Yes, that’s the band in animated form. It’s a little in your face so they wouldn’t be missed. There is actually a music video for the song but you might want to wait on looking it up until you’re finished with the show. Regarding the whole Jayce/Mel situation you said it feels very Game of Thrones and you didn’t feel great about it: are there really many GoT-like situations where you said “I DO feel good about this?” 😂 Silco is sort of doing a pseudo baptism to Jinx. As far as the water’s toxicity remember he was submerged for several minutes, dunking for a few seconds is far less lethal. Viktor and Jinx are both trying to crack Hexxtech from different perspectives, as he’s running on borrowed time and she’s just doing whatever and trying to make it work. I’m not sure if what we saw at the end between Viktor and Jayce is present it flashback: but the point is they’re both aware of his condition, which isn’t exactly a optimal diagnosis. Notice that when Vi went after the big soldier (errgh, I keep forgetting her name they don’t say it a whole lot) she kept fighting even through the stab until she heard what Jinx really was. She basically lost the will to fight and survive at that point, and only Caitlyn’s bullet saved her. Notice that Silco is legitimately surprised when he finds out Vi is alive. Which means Marcus was able to keep this bit of information from him up to this point. Apparently while Silco had most of the cards, he doesn’t have them all. So have we hooked you enough on this here show yet?

Manny

A lot has happened here but this was a bit more delightful. I’m ecstatic to have new characters like Caitlyn and jinx to makes things more poppin.

Hahha great quote! And so fun about the accent! Oh yeah, that did answer the question huh??

2023-01-17 00:44:55 Caitlyn's "that place looks like it has bodies buried in the basement." is particularly hurtful to Vi....she and her sister & childhood friends GREW UP and lived in that basement once upon a time....it was home sweet home, for better or worse.

Admittedly, but Jinx at the age she has, cannot surpass her sister who was younger (it seems to me) when she recorded this score... There is something to feel inferior about.

So true about the pairing!! That makes so much sense about the dynamic between Caitlyn and Grayson mirroring the one between Vi and Vander, too! Ah, thanks for clarifying about the timeline and about the inmate Vi attacked, I sorted that out after but got a bit confused in the moment lol. So sad that this is the first positive anything that Vi has had with anyone from Piltover...!! Yeah, true that Marcus more or less didn't really have much of a choice in this deal - it was inherited. Yeah, both Jayce and Viktor are right in a way! It's tough. Oh I know, Powder/Jinx is truly haunted. Seeing Vi getting to be free is so nice, especially considering all she's been through these years! It's so sad to see how Jinx is handling this....she really was just an innocent girl who had horrible luck. But compare that to Jinx, who's so capable and carefree seemingly, and yeah...it's easy to see why someone would want the other persona to just go away. Silco and Jinx definitely need therapy!! The fight scene is amazing!!! Great point about Cait's shooting and about how she could have easily taken the kill shot there and didn't. YAY so glad I'm not alone in shipping them! I can't wait to see what happens next! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction and I hope you have an awesome day/night too!!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) YAY I'm here for the ship! You guessed right about me loving them haha. Yeah, Marcus is for sure more layered than just being a bad guy. Interested to see where his story goes! That's a great comparison to Gotham actually! Whoa, can't wait to see even more muscles in the future!!! Ah yes, good call about not beating the high score, not sure if I caught that. John - number 2 is still proving something for sure! I would love to see the videos you mentioned once I'm caught up, Spadeas!!!! :) I was a Psych major so I'm sure I'd love them!!!

kamenriderhime

Yay, thank you so much, I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!!! SO much going on! The visuals are amazing and Vi looks SO good, omg! The design is really working for sure. Hehehe glad I'm not the only one who ships them! Oh yeah, that scene definitely answered the question! The Jinx stuff is really heartbreaking! It's so sad to see all that she's reliving and I wish she could get therapy too!!! Oh man, can't wait for the next ep! Thank you again!

kamenriderhime

Ah yes, thanks for clarifying that! Oh, and also for that tidbit about her claiming to have Jayce's authority. Hahah oh man, Caitlyn is definitely having some James Bond moments! Yeah, you can definitely see how Vi and Caitlyn see each other's world (mistakenly in a lot of instances). And LOL I can't help myself from the ship!!!!!!!!!!! >.< Hahaha I suppose necessary really means nothing to Jinx but still...!!! Ah yes, someone pointed out the second place that Jinx gets - a little symbolic I think. So cool about the band, and I'll be sure to hold off on the music video until I'm caught up! Ah yes, for sure getting the GoT vibes here....like I'm happy, I think??? Lol. I can see the baptism symbolism for sure, and good to know that the couple of seconds wasn't enough to really damage anything. Poor Viktor! Omg, I know, when Vi hears what's really going on....it really does feel like she's given up until Caitlyn's bullet saves her. Oh good call that Marcus must have kept it a secret from Silco!!! OMG hooked doesn't even begin to cover it! Can't wait for more!!!!!!!!!!!
