Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to Arcane ep 2!!! Whoa, we're meeting new characters and getting an even bigger glimpse into the overall world here, and it's awesome! So magic used to be a real thing, but now is deemed too dangerous to even consider....?? Also, we get a peek into Vander's feelings here regarding fighting and the cost of battle. Meanwhile we are really running out of places to hide from the enforcers, shoot!!!! And of course, we have the looming threat of the mad scientist individual we keep seeing in between all the main plot stuff!!!! So much going on, can't wait to see what's gonna happen!!! This series is sooooo good, it really feels like I'm being transported to another world each time I watch it!!! Enjoy! ~ MH

One of the things I really like about this show is how the characters aren't black and white, the good guys have their flaws and the bad guys have their redeeming points... Except Marcus, f*ck that guy. He's a classist hypocrite that doesn't hesitate to pull a gun on a bunch of kids. Doesn't listen to Greyson (the Sheriff who has a deal with Vander), and let's not forget his little tirade when he went to raid Vander's bar ... when he said "You people mistake arrogance for bravery..." I was like "have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately dude? Projecting much?"

While I genuinely like Heimerdinger as a person, he's just TOO small-c conservative for my tastes. I can understand Jayce's frustration with his mentor.

John J Ronald

I also really like Viktor...I think you will too.

John J Ronald

I don't know about League of Legends canon, but it seems as though Caitlyn is older than Powder but younger than Vi, though not much younger...maybe 14, while Vi is pushing 16-17.

John J Ronald

Grayson's arrangement with Vander seems to be along the lines of "you don't cause trouble in Piltown proper, and I'll agree to look the other way when it comes to petty offenses, smuggling, gangland schemes, whatever...just keep that sh*t on YOUR side of the bridge."

John J Ronald

The problem are those damn blue crystals that Powder stole....that's why the Enforcers won't let this one go....if there was only a way to give them back without having to arrest someone to be the scapegoat.....

John J Ronald

The Enforcers of Piltown give me definite real-world "Black & Tans" vibes from Irish history, British auxiliary police recruited directly from the Army who were also renowned for their cruelty against the Irish civilian population circa 1916 through the Irish War of Independence.

Actually, it might feel like you’re smack dab in the middle of the plot already, but in reality, we haven’t even started the game, we’re still putting all the pieces in their start positions. A couple of names I can point out: the kid you’re calling “Little Man” is a code name, his real name is Echo. The very short, very old character is Professor Heimerdinger. The two Enforcers are Grayson (the one who’s trying to work out things peacefully), and Thomas (the one who is stirring the pot underground and causing trouble with that other individual. His name is on subtitles but it actually hasn’t been uttered out loud yet. Speaking of the thug who drunk the purple liquid is called Deckard. I’ve seen the whole series so I’m treading carefully here, cause you’re just starting the ride. The most interesting juxtaposition here is there are two different mentor/student debates going on: Heimerdinger is trying to convince Jayce to stop his research on magic, or as Viktor called it, Hextech. The reason being he’s seen magic cause all sorts of trouble in the past. On the flip side of the story, Vander is telling Vi how devastating retaliation against Piltover would be. Because he’s seen it, and do have they: I’m not 100% clear on this, but from the dialogue it seems that the lower side people attacked up because of the same kind of differences they’re dealing with now, and that is what first lead to that massacre at the start of the first episode that we first saw Vi, Powder and Vander in. Nobody’s wrong in either case: both Jayce and Vi have very good reasons for wanting what they do and good intentions. But their detractors aren’t wrong either. If things go poorly because of these endeavors, repercussions will be severe for not just those responsible, but EVERYONE. Get used to being mad at getting cut off at the end of episodes by the way. 😈 I’m surprised you didn’t stop to make a Patron comment in a show that actually mentioned them, lol. Oh, one more thing about that: one of my friends is a fan of yours, but can’t afford to be one, but was super excited to hear from me you’re doing this series. So I was told to pass along a message on her behalf: keep a jar next to you during this series because you’re gonna need something to store the tears in. 😂

So, one little detail here that I love. The guy getting interrogated towards the start of the episode, who spits on the enforcer's shoe, is also one of the people in the bar questioning Vander's leadership, the one who accuses him of just trying to look after his kids. It says a lot to me about the kind of solidarity these people have, that even though he clearly has issues with the choices being made he isn't going to go behind anyone's back and rat the kids out, even when he had a really easy opportunity to do so. Definitely a tricky situation everyone's in right now, with the people of the undercity growing more and more angry at being continually pushed around by those on top, and the council demanding retribution at any cost. One thing I think you missed, which I wouldn't blame you for since it isn't directly stated, but in that final scene (which I really love by the way, the whole way it's cut and the relaxed music over the tense visuals is fantastic), Vi is giving herself up to the enforcers in an effort to prevent things from escalating. After the talk with Vander she's realised that fighting is only going to lead to bad things, and so in an effort to protect Powder and the rest she's turning herself in. Super excited for next week, gonna be a real crazy ride for you!

Hi Hime :) Hey here's my favorite character coming on stage, Caitlyn. You don't see a lot of her right now, but I think you'll like her too.

Manny

I recycled an old jar for such an occasion. I'm ready 🥲

kamenriderhime

So true about the shades of gray, lol Marcus just seems like a real a-hole though!!! And too true that that statement is projecting so much it’s not even funny!!!

kamenriderhime

I hear you! I can definitely see that line of reasoning, even though I’m still on the fence about it all!

kamenriderhime

Yeah good point!!!! Too bad there’s no lost and found that we could just drop them off at anonymously or something lol!

kamenriderhime

Oh interesting! I wasn’t aware of that. Or if I was I had long forgotten it. Thanks for the info!

kamenriderhime

Ohhhh I think I missed that detail, good catch! And it does prove kind of the mentality of folks here. Yeah definitely seems like this has been brewing for a bit. OHHHHH I did not get that, that Vi is giving herself up!! >.< Yikes!!!!!!!! Thanks for all the info!

kamenriderhime

Interesting point about the timing! Thanks for all the name info as well!! I noticed they called the kid Echo and was confused at first before thinking oh, that's probably just a nick name lol. Thanks for taking the time to clarify; I definitely see what you mean that on both sides, we have authority figures/mentors warning of the dangers of what could happen based on their own bad experiences. And I think I started putting it together more after this, actually, while editing ep 1, that the battle in the beginning is what showed Vander just how bad things can get when you try and revolt. Hahaha oh I'm already primed and ready for being mad at the end of the eps lol!!! And ohhhh yes I wish I had thought fast enough to comment on the word patron being used! >.< So cool that your friend is excited as well, please tell them the free version of ep 1 is going out to YouTube tomorrow, yay!!! And thanks for the message, dang, I'm gonna drown in a river of my own tears, aren't I?!?!?! Manny's ready lol!!!

2023-01-17 00:45:15 I didn’t have time to leave my longer comment yet but like everyone else I want to give you the advice of having a lot of tissues for episode 3. I hope I got this to you before you recorded the reaction. I have to talk about the opening scene. I love getting to see the other side of things in Piltover and I will talk more about this when I post my longer comment. I think it’s really telling of the kind of person Vi is that she made sure Jayce was okay before leaving. I love and think it’s amazing that we get a really intense flashback for a character we just met. Seeing him desperately cry for help as his mother is dying with frostbite setting in is heartbreaking and what a terrifying way to go. This magic user who appears is theorized to be a character from the game which is so cool. 1 of the things I did know about this thanks to my little knowledge of the game was there was technology and magic what I didn’t know was how awesome and creative it would look with this animation. I do think it was teleportation and the imagery is breathtaking. Also the man seems to have runes (magic symbols) carved into his skin. I love the way they use imagery and visual storytelling a lot and how we can see connections and parallels between characters. Also it’s incredible how we are able to learn so much about the world and Jayce just by seeing this 1 experience. Great reaction by the way. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Oh yes, I filmed ep 3 yesterday, and I'm still reeling! There was definitely tearing up, and also just a lot of shock and despair :O It really is nice to see the other side of things in this, and explore it further. Also a great point about Vi taking a big risk to check on Jayce. Yeah it was great to see such an intense moment before really getting to know his character, it does give you lots of insight! I figured that might be a game character! Yes the visuals are just incredible in this show! And they do a great job of showing not always telling too. Thank you so much for all the encouragement and support!!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

2023-01-17 00:45:15 To continue my comment it’s interesting that the crystals and the things he was doing were not sanctioned by the upper city. His response of doing science I guess is hilarious. It’s interesting learning more about this society learning about a counsel and the rules. It’s a cool and interesting detail that the stone the mage gave him is now part of his cufflink after that experience its not surprising Jayce was inspired by him so much. I love Heimerdinger he’s so cute but also has an interesting and quirky especially getting to see his love of science. Also his name may be inspired/based on Oppenheimer the scientist who had a big part in the creation of the atomic bomb and Schrödinger the scientist best known for the Schrödinger’s cat experiment. Also really interesting that Jayce’s experiments are intended to use science to create and control magic. And now we get the name drop of the show that magic is referred to as the arcane in this world. It’s great how you can see the stress in his expression. I think the training machine Vi uses is really cool. On the scoreboard you can see she has the high scores, Claggor is relatively high up, Mylo is there but really low and Powder is not there at all. It’s unfortunate that after they say enforcers never come down where they are they show up just outside. The interaction between the enforcers and the man is a good way to show the entire relationship between the upper-class and lower-class and how violent the enforcers are towards them. I think it’s amazing how tense the scene when the enforcers are about to search them and the change in lighting to glowing neon is so cool. I like that Powder used a target to escape. I love how the animation really shows the threatening nature of the enforcers and the frantic feel of the chase is realistic. The woman who was interested in magic with political influence we see is an interesting character I can’t wait for you to see more of her. I like the scene with Caitlyn I love her character you will too and because we learn people in the upper city can have patrons on the Council I assume financially helping them with their education. I really love how tense this trial/questioning is with the lighting and music. Also even though it’s kind of hilarious to think about I feel bad for the guy controlling the lights in this room. Seeing that there is a lot of political stuff going on in this world which we start to see adds a nice amount of intrigue to the story and it also gives a reason to see the politics of the underground as well. It’s hilarious how she gave one of the councilors a child’s toy and pretended it was super complicated. Jayce was definitely going along with accepting responsibility and not talking about magic until they started insulting him and his research when he is so sure it’s possible and can do so much good. This allows us to learn more about mages that they are born with their abilities, many of them are destructive and cause a lot of terrible things to happen especially in the past getting to see it through Heimerdinger eyes with some awesome 2D artwork. You totally understand both sides because it is incredible but especially after the explosion the argument of danger holds more merit. You feel for his mother and understand why because she loves her son but basically she said he was not going to succeed and while it’s uncertain if he would have convinced them but she didn’t give him the chance. Also while it may technically be better than exile arguably expelling him and taking away his ability to realize his dream he’s pursued for a very long time is worse. I love how the rain is representing his dream slipping through his fingers and his loss of control. Caitlyn being there to comfort him is sweet. I don’t think it’s black and white but it is messed up that his patrons who seem to like him go from wanting to defend him to telling him to get lost basically. I love the scene in the bar and so many people wanting to fight makes sense after so much oppression making anger build up so much. In regards to Vander yes he’s protecting the children but after the experience on the bridge knows it will just lead to more death. Also he is such a intimidating figure when he wants to be although it is unfortunate divisions are forming. I think Ekko’s facial expression is adorable and is exactly how a kid looks when trying to hide a secret. And then we get Marcus getting information from the scary man since we don’t know his name and even if it’s not much since he does see himself as better than everyone here but there is some fear/surprise that he knows his name. I love the symbolism of the plant/fungus or whatever is growing like a corruption representing the evil going on there and based on the color is probably something they are using in whatever the serum that creates monsters is. I can’t tell you why but I do think Marcus is a great character for certain reasons but also fuck him especially because he was going to shoot at children. You can tell he is just waiting for what the council says about doing what ever it takes to find the gemstones especially with us then seeing his clear disgust, disdain and hatred for the under city. Which is clearly contrasted with Grayson wanting to let up on them since she doesn’t want bloodshed and doesn’t hate them even if she isn’t really trying to change things unfortunately. And then we see Marcus being an absolute ass in the bar in a scene that does a good job at showing off the divisions and problems between both sides and damn does Vander have some extreme self-control. Interesting that scary man knew Vander and about him being more violent/aggressive which would only make sense based on the beginning of the 1st episode. Also the subtle threat is great. I love how they use angles and lighting/sound to present the intensity and fear of the enforcers. It’s so understandable that Vi wants to fight when she solves her problems that way, it’s where her skills/strengths lie, wanting to protect and give a better life to Powder and this immediate/direct threat certainly isn’t helping. It’s fitting he brought her to the bridge to have such a serious conversation and I like the detail that there are lots of memorials here. It’s so heartbreaking to hear Vi talk about how even though she almost certainly doesn’t think it’s true she has always felt less than the upper-class because of how they have been treated but I think the important part is she doesn’t want to fight for herself it’s for her sister. However thanks to what Vander says we learn that she is not willing to put the people she cares about in danger. But she makes a good point about having to do something and it feels like there aren’t a lot of good options. And it’s a little sad that he wasn’t including her in the decision putting it on himself. It’s a really sweet moment when she leans on him. We have heard villains talking about power in a lot of different fiction but it’s always interesting and the voice actor for “scary man” really sells it and is amazing. Also Deckard’s transformation and screams are truly horrifying. It’s really upsetting to see that Jayce was going to commit suicide because he had lost hope but I love that someone truly believes in him and stopped this the worst part was seeing him leave the small gemstone and a note behind. Also I have avoided looking it up because I don’t want to know but I’m pretty sure the big thing with Viktor’s name is that his character in game has a different name or looks different. I love that Vi found a way to get the rabbit toy and gave it to Powder and the advice that being different isn’t a bad thing and makes you strong is so amazing and true. Unfortunately it’s sad because it feels like a goodbye and the scene afterwards reflects that bittersweet feeling with that amazing song. I feel like it was Vander realizing he hadn’t seen Vi in a while and probably then realized the communication device was missing. I don’t think you should feel bad about not realizing she sent the message and was going to give herself up since fighting is a big part of her character. Although a nice detail is how well the body language of anxiety and nervousness is represented. Finally what a cliffhanger. I loved your reaction. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Hey, sorry it took me a while to reply! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Oh I didn't know that about the name inspiration from Oppenheimer! Oh very interesting that we'll see more of the council member who had interest in magic. I think you make a great point in that it's so easy to see both sides of the argument when it comes to tech-ifying magic lol. And the whole situation with Jayce in general. I'm curious to see why Marcus is an interesting character for sure! And yeah, huge contrast with Grayson. That's true, too, that Vi has a point that something needs to change! The scene with Vi and Powder was so bittersweet! And thanks about not knowing Vi's intentions in that scene, I was afraid that was really obvious and I missed it! Thank you so much again for your comment, and for all the encouragement and support! It means a lot!!!!!!!!!!!
