Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to the premiere ep of season 2 of Oshi no Ko! WOW we are kicking off in a big way! Catching up with most of our crew and getting to see a whole new aspect of the entertainment industry: the theater! I'm really curious to see how the author is gonna influence this play, how Kana will grow, how Akane will deal with her character, etc.! We're off to the races, can't wait for more! Enjoy! ~ MH

I’m starting to notice a trend - the first season you uploaded Oshi No Ko Episode 1 on Thanksgiving (a bit late), and you uploaded the first episode of S2 on the Fourth of July (also later in the day.) the big point, what is it with you and starting this series on holidays? 😂 But I digress - anyway, I wonder how long these comments will be? It’s an interesting style choice to start with introducing the stage play and the characters involved - the plot itself appears to be a shonen, and the main character is named Blade. As for OUR actual crew, Kana plays a character named Tsurugi, Aqua has a support role named Touki, and Akane has the role of Princess Saya - also it’s interesting to note that just as the main character gets the top bill in the introductions, there’s some telling in that Akane’s role is introduced last. A quick sidebar: I do believe that Oshi No Ko itself has indeed been adapted into a live action stage play. Talk about ironic, huh? As for the intro, it’s not too bad. I imagine it’ll grow on me - I feel it has an unfair and unlucky role of having to follow Yoasobi - that’s a tough act to follow, and it’s no fault of theirs - somebody had to do it. it’s somewhat ironic, given the nature of Akane and Aqua’s start, that we open on her apparently rehearsing a death scene. Not sure how much or if we should read into that. According to Ruby, it has been four months since the end of S1, and the idol group isn’t making a huge splash, but they’re gaining enough traction to not be discouraged. She’s still got the motivation to see things through, and while they aren’t perfect, things seems to be going well enough. Ruby doesn’t “approve” of Aqua’s current “relationship” with Akane - at least, the way he’s going about it. He’s apparently let her in on the true nature as far as he views it, at least. Though calling him “an enemy of all girls” might be a bit harsh - Akane did agree to these terms prior to them “dating.” Tokyo Blade’s manga has over 50 million copies in print, and I had to chuckle a bit when it was mentioned “the play unfolds mainly based on the Shibuya Conflict Arc, in which two groups clash.” I’m hearing conflict, arc, and Shibuya in the same sentence. Does that perhaps bring to mind any… recent… INCIDENTS??? Akane is inquiring about Aqua’s thoughts on his role and his relationship with Kana. Aqua admits he’s glad he doesn’t have too many scenes with her, because it gives her far less opportunity to nag at him. Akane starts to gush about acting and her love and passion for it, until Aqua kind of shoots her down - not in a way that’s demeaning, in fact I don’t think he realizes he’s throwing a wet blanket on her. It kind of startles her to find out he’s not sharing the same passion she does. He has other motives, particularly the director of the play, Kindaichi, and his connections to Ai. The executive producer of the play, Raida, is pretty happy with how the cast is turning out and praises Saburagi for his out of company casting choices. In the meantime Kindaichi admits his company needed a shot in the arm. Even Melt, who was playing the lead in the Sweet Today tv series, seems to have actually buckled down and started acting. He comments that Akane is good at immersing herself in her role, while Kana is better at responding to acting from the people around her. At this point, the director feels Akane is ahead of Kana. It’s at this point they point out that the Star of the show, Himekawa, has a lot of on stage time with Kana and that might change things for her. He pretty much gives her a green light to come at him. This triggers something and she lets loose. As far as her reactions to Himekawa go, I think they might be more in awe… imagine, for example, you watched Star Wars growing up and you’re suddenly filming a scene with Harrison Ford - I think she might’ve been a little star struck up to that point, until he unlocked her potential. Which… basically starts screwing the scenery, and the other actors notice. The two of them and Melt hit it off, and start arranging “work dinners” to talk shop. Akane, in particular notices how assertive Kana suddenly became and starts to speculate at what the cause of it is. The director and the producer comment that Kana is shaking things up, and in their mind, that’s going to wake up anyone else who gives a damn in the cast. Which is most of them. Aqua however, is off in his own world. Rehearsals generally go for about a month and due to schedules, it’s nearly impossible to get all the principals (first choice actors) on the set at once, but they do try to show up just because of their passion. Akane notices there are “factions” being formed - the leading cast group, the Lala Lai group, and the bit part group - but her boyfriend isn’t attaching to any of them - he’s got a gloomy aura because his mind is elsewhere. She notices that he’s paying attention to Kana and asks him if he’s watching her, which he affirms. She gets a bit flustered by this, as she’s “supposed” to be his girlfriend. I think this kind of clues in that while she understands what this relationship is supposed and expected to be, she would like it to be more tangible and an actual thing, something she already admitted in Season 1. She doesn’t have too much time to stir up jealousy when he reveals that he’s observing the acting choices she makes and comments on her past choices and how they closed a lot of doors to her - she’s now working to rectify that. He is aware of their rivalry, and says she needs to step up her game or she’ll lose. This causes Akane to make a pout face that’s too cute. She knows he’s right, but doesn’t like hearing it. It’s kind of the same as MEM commenting on their love triangle earlier, she’s gonna have to try harder if she wants to win for real. Aqua has no plans at all to dip into the competition at this point, he’s just along for the ride. When Akane gets a chance to reflect, she admits she’s been dealt a tough hand, as her character doesn’t only have a low amount of source material to draw upon, her character in the manga is losing the relationship she has with Aqua’s character to the one the fans are clamoring for, which is Kana’s. In the latest chapter, her character even lost her betrothal. She inquired that guys like characters like the one Kana plays, that have a lot of life, and that’s confirmed. This puts more pressure on Akane. Akane has a problem though, the original character is a kind hearted girl who is shy about killing people but the adaptation has completely flipped her to being power hungry. Akane feels sadness for her character and a strong sense of relatability. When the script writer, GOA, shows up, Aqua basically gives Akane an unexpected opening to inquire why her character has been changed so much. The short answer is, runtime. As a point: he does a side by side of the play adding three extra minutes for one inner dialogue scene. There’s only so much that can be done, unfortunately, in a two hour play - or movie - so her character has been reduced to a plot device. (One of the nice things about anime is you get a little more time to deal with stuff like this.) The script writer admits he’s a fan of the manga and hated doing it too, but he had to, and offers to revise, which the director shoots down, since the manga artist has signed off on the changes. He readily admits he has to be the bad guy, it’s his job as a script writer. Kichijouji shows up, and is super happy to see Kana and Aqua again, after their performances in her adaptation, but she has no time for Melt, who was casted as the lead, and completely ruined the character portrayal, but was that his fault or the fault of the lack of direction? Something to think about. Anyway, she’s brought Samejima, the author to the set, and it turns out he’s a bit of a recluse and can’t look good looking people in the eye. Even Akane’s greeting sends him into a nervous state. He loves the actors and thinks it’s a good show waiting to happen. Which is why… he wants to change the entire script. I’m sure this won’t throw anything or anyone for a loop! 😅 Personally I kinda feel like this has to have something to do with Akane’s role in particular… after all remember, I did adopt her last year, I have a sense for things circling around her character. 😉 It seems I’m back to the crazy long editorials again… But so far this is looking pretty… what’s the word… SPICY? 👀

Hey Melissa! I was really looking forward to the second season of Oshi No Ko and I'm glad I didn't have to wait that long either. The first episode was very good. Not so much exciting stuff happened now, but at least it set the groundwork for this season and what we could expect. I think it's very cool to see how you can turn a manga into a live-action theater. I can also count the Phantom Blood musical as a positive example. And I think that's a very good example of how you can improve the source material and emphasize everything from the script in a positive way. The people in this production in the anime actually do the opposite. They cut things and rewrite the characters, so to speak, which of course I find very sad. And so I'm all the happier to see that even the author wants the entire script to be rewritten. I'm looking forward to seeing how they will design the new script. The opening is definitely an absolute banger. I could actually put it on a level with Idol straight away. The singer is the same as in JJK's third opening. He's generally a super good singer and that's why I really like this song. The visuals are godlike. The animation is definitely on point. I was also very impressed by the ending. I also recognized the band immediately because they also performed an ending for JJK from the second season. It's actually super cool that you're already starting to recognize so many artists who became famous through certain anime. I'm looking forward to The next twelve weeks to watch this anime together with you!

It feels like and doesn’t feel like the same show. I like what they did here. It’s so cool going back and forth between their characters and themselves. Interesting stuff behind the scenes too! I wonder if chemistry or turmoil will transpire with the dating stuff. It could be difficult to keep things professional for starting actors. Interesting topic I’d like to discuss about good actors having to hold back to keep up with production. Also the reverse is true. It’s good to give them free rein and it’s required as shots for movies usually have one go and they need to fill up gaps or whatever. But sometimes the actor, especially new ones, have to remember everyone on set is looking to make something great. It’s not all about just them. 🎥 🎞️ Awesome first episode back!

Hi Hime :) The scene of Princess Saya's death really recalls Ai's death, so yeah, Aqua will be able to bring his experience into this scene for sure... Thanks to the animation team for starting with that eh, lol. Kana is an excellent actress, Himekawa being good finally allows her to show her talents and that makes me happy. The scene where both of them are so good in their roles that everyone sees the scene with their characters instead of themselves was great. This takes me back to Skip Beat once again, I've already talked to you about it several times and even showed a scene, but yes, the world of acting and the power of actors to change the atmosphere of the play, I I've already seen this more than once ^^. Small detail, Abiko, the mangaka, has the voice of Ochaco while Himekawa, the genius actor, has the voice of Shigaraki. I haven't looked to see if any other MHA actors or actresses are in the cast, but it's pretty fun to find at least two.

Hey Leonie! I'm so glad you liked the first ep! I know, it's really interesting to focus on this particular medium. LOL I was totally thinking of the PB musical during this! That's so true, there are plenty of ways to make changes but still keep the same tone/spirit/vibe and/or even add something that was missing in the source material (like Dio's depth in the musical....or that catchy tune his dad was always singing :P)! I know, it's sad to see it done in the opposite direction! I agree about the opening!!! That's super high praise to put it on the same level as Idol!!! No kidding about the singer! I agree about the animation and ending as well. Wow they have a lot of JJK musicians here haha. Aw thanks, yeah it's a great way to get to know artists and their resumes in the anime music scene!!! YAY!!! 3 months of more Oshi no Ko goodness, here we go!!!

I can see that for sure, we're embarking on a whole new part of the entertainment scene! I know, it'll be interesting to see how the behind the scenes stuff affects everything, right! That's so true, this effect can totally happen in reverse when actors aren't willing to work well with others. It happens in wrestling sometimes too. I'm so glad you enjoyed the first ep!!!

Hi Spadeas! :) Omg yes, it was a total parallel to Ai! Hahaha they knew what they were doing starting us off with that! I'm glad Kana can finally show her stuff! I was thinking of Skip Beat and the clips you showed me while watching this! Oh that's so fun about the VAs! I heard Jotaro's VA was in it too, as one of the directors I think. It's always fun to find voices from other series right!!!

I guess Oshi no Ko loves to sync up their release dates with holidays :P No kidding, there's an Oshi no Ko play?! That's pretty meta! I know, Yoasobi is a tough act to follow! I think you're right that the actor who was sort of goofing off on the show from last season has buckled down now. And it's an interesting dynamic between this more seasoned actor and Kana - I totally get the analogy about the Star Wars set lol. It's nice to see her be able to explore her potential. OMG are they doing their own Shibuya arc here?! It's too bad that Akane now has the script and Kana's leveled up performance to compete with. I know, I do kinda feel bad for the actor who got snubbed by the mangaka lol, after all there was probably more to that performance than just the acting alone. Haha what a twist that the author wants the whole script redone! Considering what we know about Akane's role, it really isn't that uncalled for, but still. I didn't have too much to add to a lot of your editorial, but thanks for explaining things in more depth! Here's to the new ep this week!

Tokyo Blade is such an amusingly anachronistic title since the city was called Edo in the era of Samurais.
