Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 23 of Vinland Saga!  OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys, I legit never EVER saw things going this way!!! I honestly was waiting for something bad to happen during that whole conversation lol....to think that Thorfinn got through to Canute, and he made a good choice that spiraled into more good things....!!!!! It's so beautiful!!! Thorfinn changed a great portion of the world just be standing up for what he believed in and being an inspiration. And Olmar was inspired too!!! And even Snake and his crew, who are farmers now! They took the peaceful path that Sverkel offered, yayyyyy!!!! And the moments at Arnheid's grave.... :')))))))))))))))) What an amazing, incredible, beautiful close to this chapter of the story! I can't wait to see the finale! Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

This episode was a fantastic way to wrap up everything from this season. I would describe Canute as being in an echo chamber basically. I agree it’s really cool that Thorfinn has been on/seen so many different sides of things & I think that aspect of his character had a big impact on him having this perspective/being able to come to these conclusions. I love how one of the soldiers expresses their respect for Thorfinn not wanting to kill him even if the soldier can’t understand him/thinks he is strange. I think the imagery of Canute being surrounded also by darkness while Thorfinn is a small, lone light in the darkness. I like to imagine Sweyn as Canute’s intrusive thoughts LOL I think it fits. I like how this moment also points out how Canute has been lowering himself by talking about his true thoughts to “commoners”. I love how Sweyn is constantly telling Canute to kill/not listen to Thorfinn because exactly as you said this part of Canute doesn’t want to be conflicted/doesn’t want his resolve tested & his ideas are exactly the reason why Thorfinn is dangerous because his ideas can change people. I love the very simple answer Thorfinn has for what to do if his talks of peace are refused because it makes perfect sense with his ideology & for the way it completely shocks Canute. I really like the line of Thorfinn saying what would killing each other accomplish in the end because of how much it feels right for his character. I love this moment of Canute just laughing at the absurdity of just how different/crazy Thorfinn is compared to the world he has been living in as King as well as the current dark/violent world at large because of how this laughter was such a genuine moment of what felt like relief from him after having this weight of his goal & being king on his shoulders. Because when you think about the expectations he & others put on him you realize why this would be so relieving/different for him. Especially with how different Thorfinn is compared to the people trying to get on his good side or even trying to control him. I think the realization that a group as violent & seemingly beyond being saved were able to produce someone like Thorfinn gave him hope that he probably hasn’t had in a long time if ever because of how impossible his dream seems. I love how he calls Thorfinn beautiful because of how true it is. I love how their goals are kind of intersecting/meeting in this scene with how one of them is constantly going to use peaceful methods if given any choice to make a better world while the other uses power as peacefully as possible to achieve a similar goal. I’m glad that Thorfinn talking about how Canute will hurt some people even if it’s meant to help many because it acknowledges that he wants to create a better world & that he cares but also I think in some ways even though Canute knows that some people will get hurt because of his plans he hasn’t fully allowed that fact to sink into his heart because of how much more conflicted it could make him. I love how this goes into how Thorfinn will help the people who are hurt/oppressed in the world Canute wants to create because they don’t fit in/would be hurt in that world. I like how this is also showing worry for the king being on a path where he could end up too far gone. I took this as a way of talking about how Canute could lose sight of his true mission with the amount of power he wants to have. Thorfinn telling the king to do better because his own power is not enough to support all the people who can not live in the King’s world is bold as hell & I think it’s funny because of the voice acting & him crossing his arms like a disappointed parent. I agree it’s amazing how this one decision to not requisition the farm led to other good things for Canute & in general like England not being burdened by having to pay for a large Danish military force meaning Canute now has the money he needs for his plans for a better world without having to raise taxes on Denmark. I like to think this showed him that doing good will lead to more good in the long run even in a dark world like this as well as power/violence not being the only way to change things. And I love how I am almost positive this is historically accurate. I love how this shows that his desire to create a better world is possible with how leadership started to change. He has done bad things but it makes me happy that this experience with Thorfinn helped him feel some peace after a long time in the darkness. I love how clear his eyes are knowing that there are other people like him & Wulf wanting to make a better world. I think this shows that most people even if they have done bad things are never too far gone. I can relate to starting to get emotional with the I feel good line from him because I was as well I love his character. Also I am very impressed by how the author of this story was able to integrate a historical person into the themes of his story with the information known about him & not make it feel messy and make him feel like a fully fleshed out character even though most likely this was not what the real Canute was like although I’m sure aspects of the one in this show are like the real one. I think he & Thorfinn have a wonderful relationship as characters and although I prefer to see them as parallels of each other & friends I can see why some people ship them. I like that we got a very contemplative scene of Thorfinn walking to Arnheid’s grave I think it was good that he has had time to think a lot about stuff. It’s a bittersweet moment to see Einar paying his respects while thinking of those he has lost. It is a really powerful sentiment from Thorfinn to want to be able to tell the people who feel like there is no other salvation besides death that there is a place to live peacefully & heal from what ever they have been through especially with the music, bright sky & Einar agreeing. I love to see this resolve as they call each other brothers. And after everything they have gone through that is truly what these 2 are. What a beautiful and powerful bond they have. I think this goodbye they shared with Snake, Sverkel, Olmar & Pater was heartwarming. Even if they might be too humble I think it is respectable that Thorfinn cares more about the farm being okay then acknowledgment of his efforts. I love how much Olmar has become inspired by what he what he witnessed of what a real man is with everything Thorfinn did but I think it’s great that he pointed out that Olmar is well on his way to that having realized peace is better than violence in less time than Thorfinn did. It really makes me happy to see them saying thanks to all these people who did so much for both of them. And then we get to the powerful moment of Snake telling them his real name showing how much he trusts & cares about them showing how he thinks of them as friends it makes me feel things. I love how we have the quotes like in the first episode of the season matching what is happening on screen at the end of the season it’s a nice full circle thing. I think it’s great to see Olmar happy farming as well as with the girl from the start of the season. I like to think they had a very happy relationship for the rest of their lives <3. It’s nice to see the guests experiencing “honest” work I hope they are on the path to being better people. And the way the guests get Roald to stop taking a break is hilarious. Also I love that Pater has been given hope because of Thorfinn & Einar believing pain was the way of the world it is wonderful that he has been shown something different. And I love how important Arnheid is not only for this season but the story as a whole with its themes & how she will continue to be very important as the story goes on. I love how the last thing in the episode/S season is a quote about encounters because of how many important encounters there were in this part of the story. I think wanting someone who has done bad things like Ketil to do better is all we can really hope for from people. I think at the end there he was fully realizing the consequences his actions which he Will have to come to terms with. I really appreciated your thoughts on this episode I think you talking about what the show was trying to as well as your thoughts about the characters were well said. I don’t have much else to add but I loved the sentiment of you saying that even if you only make things better a little it’s still worth doing. One last thing I wanted to say is sometimes the hardest things for people to do is talk to each other which happened here which is amazing. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Omg the way you describe Canute is just perfect, the echo chamber, the intrusive thoughts lol, etc.! I absolutely love that they could find common ground here and Canute could come to this realization. Also Thorfinn's way of talking to him was just great! I think this was so eye opening for Canute and def shows him that there's another way to go about his plans. That's interesting about the ship! I can see how important their influence is on each other no matter how you interpret it. OMG the scenes of Thorfinn and Einar are just amazing! They've come so far together! Snake saying his real name was a great moment too. I like to think Olmar and the girl lived happily ever after too!!!!
